What if your child's future success—especially with college admissions—hinges  on how curious they become before they even get there? In this episode, I break down the Curiosity Window, the critical developmental phase between ages 10 and 13, when your child's brain is primed for identity formation, exploration, and deep learning. If curiosity is nurtured now, it becomes a foundation for confidence, motivation, and impact later. If ignored, that spark often fades—leading to disengaged, uncertain teens. You'll also hear why I created Curiosity Lab, a live weekly program designed specifically for 10–13 year-olds to build curiosity, critical thinking, and communication skills through hands-on learning.

Ayala-Rodriguez faces felony charges including felony murder, first-degree vehicular homicide, tampering with evidence, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, alongside misdemeanor charges for reckless driving, speeding, driving without a license, operating a vehicle without insurance, and operating an unregistered vehicle. Officials stated Ayala-Rodriguez was traveling over 140 mph on his motorcycle before the crash, which occurred during a pursuit initiated by Cenescar. Ayala-Rodriguez allegedly destroyed the motorcycle's license plate during the chase. Cenescar, 28, died from injuries sustained in the crash. Ayala-Rodriguez was arrested five days later and remains in Gwinnett County jail without bond. STORY 2: Gwinnett Police Searching for Missing 13-Year-Old Suwanee Girl Sandy Michelle Soto, a 13-year-old girl, has been missing from her home on Welford Road in unincorporated Suwanee since April 21 around 11:45 p.m., as reported by the Gwinnett County Police Department. The regulations target greenhouse gas emissions, requiring coal plants to cut carbon emissions by 90% by 2032. Georgia Power may need to revise plans regarding coal ash disposal and faces potential compliance challenges for legacy coal ash sites. Power industry groups criticized the rules, citing concerns about job losses and reliability. Litigation is expected, especially concerning carbon emissions rules. Georgia Power, despite reducing emissions, faces scrutiny for plans to extend fossil fuel capacity. Environmental groups urge utilities to reconsider gas-dependent future amid EPA's regulatory actions. STORY 5: Dog theft causes same emotional turmoil as losing a child New research suggests that dog owners who experience pet theft undergo significant emotional distress, akin to losing a family member or child. The bond between owners and dogs is profound, often intensifying the grief. However, legal frameworks often treat stolen dogs as mere property, limiting support from law enforcement. The manner of theft, whether through force or burglary, exacerbates the trauma. Owners may face delays in processing grief, akin to PTSD, especially if the dog isn't recovered. This study, published in Human-Animal Interactions, underscores the need for psychological and legal support tailored to the unique grief experienced by dog owners. Further research aims to develop support tools for those affected by dog theft.   We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES 2   DTL INTERVIEW   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Have you ever stopped to consider the significant role empathy plays not only in our personal lives, but also in our professional environment? That's exactly what we did in our recent conversation with Michael Tennant, the founder and CEO of Curiosity Lab. Michael, a new dad, shared with us his deep respect for his wife and all mothers, and how becoming a parent has forced him to remain present and lead with empathy. We explored how empathy can be a secret weapon for anyone - be it moms, founders, entrepreneurs, or creators - and how it can shape healthier, happier lives.  Our exploration into the world of empathy didn't just end there. We dug deeper into our emotional understanding. You know those butterflies you feel in your stomach when you're nervous or that lump in your throat when you're sad? We discussed how our bodies physically respond to our emotions and how we can mindfully navigate these sensations. We also delved into the five core emotions - joy, fear, anger, shame, and sadness - and the three types of empathy - cognitive, somatic, and emotional. We learn that all these are here to keep us safe and, with a touch of practical exercises, we can use them to make intentional choices in our interactions with others. Roman Hardgrave has three kids and had a dream. Last year, we spoke to Roman about this crazy idea of opening a new school in the area. He only had an idea--no staff, no location, and no students. That has all changed and  Maryland Curiosity Lab is up and running in Arnold at Gloria Dei! Lutheran Church on College Parkway! To be honest, last year, I was not terribly sure what type of school it was going to turn out to be; but this year, all that has changed. As we know, students all learn a bit differently and Maryland Curiosity Lab empowers students to learn in the manner and at the pace they want. They are accountable to one another and have a lot of freedom to structure their day as it best fits them. And they do amazing field trips every Friday! Today, we talk with Roman about the school in detail and then take a tour. My kids are adults now, but if I had some younger children, I'd definitely check out Maryland Curiosity Lab. Granted, it is not the school for everyone; but for the right students and families, it is an amazing experience! Have a listen! In the latest episode of the "Redefining Society Podcast," we dive into the pulsating heart of urban innovation at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2023 in Barcelona. This episode features a conversation with Brandon Branham of Peachtree Corners and the Curiosity Lab, an epicenter of smart city development in Atlanta, Georgia. The dialogue orbits around the synergy of smart city initiatives and the organic evolution of societies. We unpack the layers of complexity that define smart cities—places where technology, policy, and human experience converge to forge dynamic, interconnected urban environments. As we look at smart city ecosystems, we scrutinize the remarkable advancements and the challenges that pace their deployment. We learn about Peachtree Corners' remarkable transformation from a cradle of technological firsts—like the invention of the modem and the color printer—to a living laboratory for smart city innovation. Here, the realms of connected vehicles and vulnerable road users intersect, as highlighted by the collaboration between Audi and a company called Spoke, aiming to make roads safer for everyone. The narrative extends to how smaller cities like Peachtree Corners can serve as microcosms for innovation, more agile and receptive to change than their larger counterparts. In contrast, historical cities like Florence, faced with the challenge of preserving their heritage, illustrate the complexity if the integration and balance of progress and tradition.Join us as we navigate through the mosaic of smart city dialogues, capturing a glimpse of what the future holds for our urban spaces, where technology doesn't just exist but coalesces with humanity to redefine society.____________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube Channel

Roman Hardgrave has three kids and an idea. Last fall, his organization, Maryland Curiosity Lab, hosted the Acton Children's Business Fair in Arnold. Think of it like a Shark Tank for the under-12 crowd. Children learn best when they are engaged and curious. That led to adventures for the days when school was not in session. You know, activities where the kids have no idea how much they are learning because they are having so much fun! And seeing how engaged kids can be in their own education has led him to found a new school called Acton Academy, which is slated to open in the fall of 2023. The concept is simple--don't stuff information down the throats of kids and expect them to learn. Instead, ignite that spark that creates the desire to learn. Today, we sat at a busy Mother's Peninsula Grille to chat. My takeaway...where was Roman when my kids were young? Have a listen! Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.    My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures.   Event of the Week: The next two weeks in Atlanta are loaded with dozens of events ranging from Venture Atlanta, TechStars Demo Day, happy hours and more with several investors from all over the country to get a taste of the Atlanta ecosystem. I hope to see several of you out and about. Here's a more tactical event to put on your calendar. On 10/20, the ATDC is hosting their regular Entrepreneur's Night starting at 5 p.m. This month is focused on all things 5G. Leaders from TMoble, Curiosity Lab, and the ATDC will be exchanging knowledge and conversations through a panel format on 5G today and tomorrow – if the 5th Generation for broadband cellular markets is of interest to you, sign up in the link within the show notes. In a state where no more than 21% of our households have high speed internet access and approximately 39% live in an area where there is only 1 internet provider, the opportunity is vast.        Company Coming Up:  This company coming up has stayed under the radar as it started as a side hustle for a few years mixed with a pivot. The name of the company? AdvizorPro (with a Z). This is software that provides a verified and robust broker-dealer, RIA, & insurance database of contacts. If you're looking to sell into the financial services industry, AdvizorPro is a great resource to get email information and direct dial numbers as the market of financial data continues to grow. AdvizorPro is a team of approximately 10 folks and one to keep an eye as they scale and grow against some of the legacy competitors in the market.    Product Launch of the Week: This past week, a company who is innovating in the litigation market publicly announced their product launch. Calloquy's software makes remote legal proceedings safe, secure, and efficient. What spawned out of Covid, Calloquy is now making several aspects of court proceedings including arbitrations, depositions, and mediations as simple as setting up a video conference call. The software is like a very secure Zoom on steroids, where you can upload and annotate documents, structure the actual video conference participants like one would be set up in a courtroom, and have all the proceedings and court reporting documented in a safe and secure location. Calloquy has invested significant resources in building out a product in a market that is tough to build a Minimum Viable Product. Check out their software today and refer it to any law firm who does remote work.     Blog and Podcast of the Week: The blog post of the week comes from Harvard Business School, one of Atlanta Ventures Partner, A.T Gimbel's alma mater. The title is “Why a Failed Startup Might Be Good For Your Career After All.” Regardless of success or failure, there is growing evidence that the market values the experience founders have and rewards them in terms of high seniority, prestigious positions, even though they failed. The article goes into detail about how they are valued and the benefits of a generalist's versatile value to a firm. I personally can't think of one successful entrepreneur who didn't have a failure. We've highlighted several entrepreneurs in our Stories section on the AV website and each one has a failure story. This may be one of the reasons why when we work with entrepreneurs in the Atlanta Ventures Studio, we love to see their previous entrepreneurial efforts, successful or not, but the experience is vital towards their next endeavor.    Lastly, I'm biased for this week's podcast of the week because it highlights someone we interviewed on the The Atlanta Story Podcast – which is another podcast out of Atlanta Ventures. The entrepreneur on this month's Atlanta Story is Cherie Kloss, Founder of SnapNurse. Cherie's story is one of fortitude, reinvention, innovation, and scale. What started out as a list of links to learn how to build a startup from her brother in 2015, led to the formation and generation of a $1.2B revenue business 6 years later. Cherie started out in the healthcare field, transitioned to a producer for A&E for nearly a decade, then started SnapNurse. In the Atlanta Story Podcast, we talk about her amazing story and how she not only reinvented herself time and time again, but also learn where the industry is going in general and more. Check it out as it drops, today!   Annnnd, that's 5 minutes.   Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. But this requires collecting data to identify citizen use cases, which raises privacy and security concerns. So, how can cities develop new technologies to scale while ensuring data protection? When gathering sensitive data for public records, it's critical to consider the intended purpose for that information to establish the appropriate collection methods and verify demands for it. To generate trust with citizens, cities must disclose the information and assemble safeguards to mitigate data sharing with third parties. With the American Rescue Plan Act, cities can deploy the funds to optimize and enhance their privacy and security measures. Peachtree Corners, Georgia is a vibrant suburb of Atlanta and is one of the first cities in the U.S. to be powered by government-owned smart city connected infrastructure and 5G. The forward-thinking municipality, which is home to some of the world's most disruptive technology developers and serves as the heart of what's being referred to as “Silicon Orchard,” began to embrace a leadership position with regard to smart cities in America, (which includes establishing its “Curiosity Lab” incubator ecosystem) originally as an economic development initiative that has since transformed Peachtree Corners into a premier innovation hub of the southeast United States. It serves as a blueprint of how to build out a “city street of the future” and more complete smart city ecosystems in the U.S. specifically. Peachtree Corners exemplifies how to optimally create and nurture deeper partnership between the government/public sector and the private sector/technology industry/business to make the smart city vision a reality.Join Brandon Branham, CPM, Peachtree Corners' Assistant City Manager/Chief Technology Officer for an enlightening discussion on these fascinating efforts

"In full disclosure, life has gotten in the way over the past year, so Michael and I have not had as many opportunities to connect as I would have liked. This recording session could be considered a kind of hybrid: It's not only a podcast interview but also our first extended conversation.
