In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast for Hairdressers, we're diving into how Timely salon software can help you streamline your bookings, set up deposit systems, and get paid with confidence, without adding more to your plate. I'm joined by Sherri Ponisi, ANZ Partnerships Account Executive at Timely, who brings 20+ years of industry experience and deep insight into what hairdressers really need from their software. Sherri started behind the chair, managed busy salons, and now supports salon professionals with tech that actually works. This episode is proudly sponsored by Timely salon software. Here's what we're covering in this episode: Why 65% of new clients now book online — and how to make that work for you How to stop no-shows with deposit policies and automation What TimelyPay can do to simplify in-salon payments (and even save you money) Automations that reduce your admin time by hours every week — including rebooking reminders, revisit texts for lapsed clients, Google review requests, and more
Have you ever filled a blonde before going darker and ended up with unwanted red tones? You're not alone — most hairdressers are taught to fill with red, regardless of the target level. But here's the truth: red is not a universal filler, and using it when it's not needed can lock you into a cycle of toner corrections and dull results. In this episode, I'm breaking down one of the most outdated techniques still taught in beauty school: using red as a default filler. If your goal isn't a level 5 red or deeper, red is the wrong choice. We'll explore:
When it comes to copper hair, we all know the struggle. You've seen it: that dreaded red root glow that turns your perfect copper into a nightmare. The truth? Reds and coppers are trickier than any other colour. Most hairdressers are guessing formulas, hoping they don't mess up, and then blaming the product when it doesn't work. That ends now. I created Hair Painting for Redheads to put an end to all of that uncertainty. It's time to confidently nail every red and copper request, without fear of the dreaded root glow or that “oops” moment when the client walks out. In this episode, I'll show you how to: Formulate copper with precision (say goodbye to unwanted red tones!) Prevent root glow from ruining your perfect colour Fix any red disaster (and keep your clients coming back!) No more awkward consultations. No more hiding your work. You're about to become the expert that redheads trust—and their friends refer to you.
When a client's red goes wrong, they might not say anything… but you'll notice. The way they glance at their roots. The hesitant “It looks… good?” before rushing out the door. And then? They never come back. The reality: Most hairdressers are WINGING IT with reds and coppers. They guess formulas, hope for the best, and blame the brand when it doesn't work. That's why I created Hair Painting for Redheads. So you can stop second-guessing, avoid costly redos, and confidently paint every red request—on purpose, not by accident. A proven system that teaches you to: Formulate reds with precision (no more guesswork!) Confidently fix any red disaster (before the client notices!) Become the expert redheads trust—and refer to their friends No more silent walkouts. No more losing clients. I'm breaking it down with proven formulas for different base levels. Listen to learn more. Plus, I'll share my professional tips for keeping these copper tones vibrant for longer.

I understand the challenges of creating the perfect red or copper hair colour. I've been there—accidentally creating hot roots and struggling with unpredictable results. Not anymore. My breakthrough came when I revisited my Art School notes and developed a unique approach to Creative Colour Theory. I carefully studied the art period called the Australian Moderns, which saw a collection of artists painting colourful scales, in a similar way musicians read musical scales to play instruments. Today, my world-renowned strategies and techniques have revolutionised how hairdressers achieve consistent, beautiful reds, coppers and strawberry blondes. Entering an award is time-consuming, expensive, and overwhelming—I get it. Everyone wants that trophy and believes they have what it takes, or they wouldn't enter, right? You might be surprised to learn that many hairdressers face imposter syndrome and worry they're not good enough to be in the spotlight, while others are driven by ego or see it as part of a bigger strategy for long-term success, win or lose. I was honoured to be a finalist for the 2024 Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIA) Educator of the Year, a pivotal moment in my career. In this episode, I share why not winning the award was actually a strategic win for me—and how it can be for you too. Entering industry awards is often seen as the ultimate measure of recognition, but what if not winning can be just as valuable? Join me as I unpack my journey, the transformations that came with it, and the lessons that can fuel your career growth. Balayage differs from foil highlighting because the hairdresser paints colour directly onto the hair instead of wrapping it in foil. There are no stripes and it's all about the seamless blends and future proof vibes for low-maintenance colour that looks gorgeous as it grows out without any harsh lines or obvious roots. In this episode, we're talking about balayage and toning strategies for redheads and why they are so different to working with Blondes, Brondes and Brunettes. -------------------- Learn more in my online course Hair Painting for Redheads: https://kristinarussell.com.au/hairpaintingreds/ The show notes and important links are available here: www.kristinarussell.com.au/171
In this episode, I'm sharing something I have never done before on the podcast. I'm spilling the tea on how to achieve copper hair colour with a special audio recording from one of my recent live masterclasses. I've just wrapped up teaching 3 live online classes for hairdressers. I'm so thrilled that we had more than 2,000 hairdressers and salon owners register to attend. That makes a total of approximately 10,000 Hairdressers who have attended my livestream classes in the last couple of years, and learned about my world-renowned approach to hair painting for reds and copper hair colouring. So I've done something a little different for this episode. This is an expiring podcast episode. This will be something you can only listen to for a few days before I remove it from all the listening apps. In my online class, I announced that my all-time favourite online program Hair Painting for Redheads is currently on sale with an incredible $200 off the regular price. That's reduced from $795 to $595. This podcast is the audio recording of my most loved live online class ‘How to Achieve Copper Hair Colour without Red or Root Glow'. I'll be sharing this podcast for as long as the VIP Masterclass sale is on and this will expire (just like the class replay does) when my special price ends on Monday 29th April Click this link to enrol now and learn more about my online program Hair Painting for Redheads. After listening to this podcast you will know: The secret to creating a Classic Copper that clients seeking a “natural-looking” hair colour will love. How to avoid unwanted Red tones in Copper hair colours using the unique 5-6-7-8 levelling system that works with every single hair colour brand. Grey coverage formulas for copper hair colours on clients that are 25-100% grey seeking consistency and coverage without root glow. The Art of Copper Hair Colour strategies to boost your confidence in the salon, including when to choose a semi-permanent versus permanent, and when to add concentrates or boosters for customised formulations. In the ever-evolving landscape of hair colour, where trends shift like the seasons, innovation is key. Among the latest advancements, one technology stands out: ChatGPT. Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT offers a revolutionary approach to generating basic hair colour formulas. Wondering if Chat GPT can help you formulate haircolour? In this episode, we answer that question. We'll be talking about this groundbreaking tool, we'll explore its benefits for newcomers to the industry, its limitations, and the indispensable role of expert guidance in mastering the art of hair colouring. Chat GPT is a free app on your mobile device or desktop computer. If you're an emerging colourist or hairdresser seeking inspiration for formulas, I've got a few ideas to help you get started with Chat GPT, including 5 scripts you can steal to use as your own. Don't worry! As a hairdresser, I understand there's a lot of misleading or contradictory information about hair colour formulations. It's time to stop sacrificing brightness and tone with fashion colours for grey coverage and vice versa. It's also time to stop making every Blonde client who requests to return to their natural brunette shade a reddish brown or accidentally green. Gold is much better suited as a Filler when transforming a Blonde to Brown than Red. There are both warm and cool golds in every colour brand. Cool Golds or Iridescent Violet-based Golds are better for filling light hair on a client who wants to be darker and cooler or natural results. In contrast, gold or orange-yellow golds are better for filling blonde hair to warm natural results, including copper or red. Grey Coverage fashion colours should not contain any gold. You need to add Natural into your grey coverage fashion colours. Trust me. It works with every brand. In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks podcast, I discuss examples of salon scenarios where gold is your best choice, and why you need to leave it out of your grey coverage client formulas. ----------------------------- Want to learn more? Wondering why your client's hair turns green or red when you dye it several shades darker? In this episode, we answer that question. You need to fill your client's hair if you are going 2 or more levels darker. That is a colour principle that you need to memorise. Any brand. Any salon. Let me break it down for you: If you are only going one shade darker - no filling is required. If you are going 3-4 levels darker - you need to fill 2-3 shades darker. This is a double-process colour service. If you're changing a client more than 4 levels darker, you will probably need to do a few layers of colour, including a filler, then a colour, and a final glaze or toner. There are 3 methods that you can use for filling hair: You can fill the hair with a semi-permanent colour or toning shampoo if it's highly sensitised or damaged. You can apply a tint or oxidate colour onto the hair and then comb it off and paint your 2nd layer over it. You can also fill hair before dying it darker with semi or demi-permanent colours. This is the most predictable, but not always the best solution for every hair type. In this episode of the Colour Kristina Talks Podcast for Hairdressers, we're talking about filling with a demi-permanent for ashy cool, warm and natural results. So if you always end up with an unwanted red tinge to your client's hair or a drab murky green, this is for you! ------------------ Want to learn more? I'm spilling the tea on Hairdresser Facebook Group Formula Requests, and why they're a recipe for disaster! I am freaked out by the epidemic of stylists asking strangers on the internet for help. The questions, the comments, and the misguided answers all make me so nervous I break out in hives just thinking about it. Here's the thing: 90% of all Hairdressers will give a Redhead Hot Roots. 2/3 of those stylists believe the only way that you can mix and formulate a beautiful Redhead is by using a particular colour brand, but your salon doesn't stock them. So you feel that you won't be able to do it because someone told you the colours you stock in the salon can't create beautiful Red & Copper formulas. Sound relatable? Here's the tea: if you want to avoid messing up Reds, you have to learn how to combine Creative Colour Theory with Science. But most people end up just guessing formulas or blaming the brand they use and – shocker! — it doesn't work! Many hairdressers and salon owners are apprehensive about raising their prices. The fear of alienating clientele and the uncertainty of approaching these changes can be paralyzing. The hottest topic on every news platform, when they're talking finance, is the cost of living crisis. I understand this is making many of us in the hair and beauty industry more scared than usual to have a price increase, and super nervous about sharing new prices with our clientele when ready to do so. I've reached out to Larissa Macleman. She is a successful Salon Coach and the CEO of the Salon Owners Collective. In this episode, we're talking about price increase strategies to keep your salon thriving in today's economy! It is our commercial responsibility to run a profitable business. This means we can continue to pay ourselves and our team, invest in education and new equipment, keep the doors open to serve our clients and be sustainable. Many Hairdressers are thriving regardless of the cost of living crisis. You can be one of them. Now is a great time to update your service menu. This could be something you aim to do seasonally or perhaps every fashion season, which would be twice a year. Updating your service menu by bundling popular services under exciting, trend-inspired names. Give your clients the thrill of trying something fresh with packages like "Cowgirl Copper Glaze" or "Champagne Sparkle Foils." These not only sound exciting but also create an immersive experience for clients, making them feel they're stepping into the forefront of fashion. Consider bundling traditional services like balayage, highlights, and glossing into comprehensive packages that align with the colour trends. And price for profit by bundling your most popular colour services together with a new trending name. For example, a 'Sun-Kissed Radiance' package could combine warm-toned balayage, honey highlights, and a glossy finish. Be creative and let your imagination run wild with names that resonate with the spirit of 2024. Consultations are the key to your success as a Hairdresser. The salon chair is a sacred space for the client experience. It is important to know how we can best serve our clients without our ego preventing this. They don't expect us to be a guru or to have all the information about every aspect of hair and world current affairs. They want to be seen, touched, feel a connection and have their hair washed/coloured/styled. Don't overcomplicate it. We need to contribute to the happiness in their hair. We are not perfect. We don't need to be perfect. What does the client sitting in your chair need? It's so important to know how to use the tools and techniques with strong communication skills as a Hairstylist. I'm chatting with Podcast Host, Hair Stylist and Educator Crystal Green. Also known as Your Hair Mentor on social media and in her education biz. Crystal helps hairdressers in her coaching sessions to shift their mindset around being an artist and what hair means culturally. It's important to then talk about who you serve, take the ego away, and become the mentor for your client in the salon environment. Working with Crystal as a coach could really help you. In this episode, we're talking about the 3 most important aspects of a killer consultation in the salon and why it's so important. Have you ever seen a hairdressing workshop or event shared on social media that was in your city and you wished you were there but knew nothing about it? Or perhaps you're an educator or want to become one and you're struggling to know more about planning dates in particular locations that don't clash with another guest artist with a massive following. I have been booked by brands before and had the event cancelled due to the sales team not selling enough tickets & felt really disappointed that the few people who were keen to attend now miss out on learning with me. There must be a better way to centralise this in one place… and that's exactly what my guest Clive Allwright and the team at Piloroo have done. Piloroo is a Sydney-based start-up who are 100% committed to building a better marketplace for hair stylists, educators, salons and the general public. Their online platform offers salons a diverse choice when searching for a hair educator. Simultaneously, they offer stylists additional work, when it suits them, paid promptly and at rates they set. This is fantastic news for our industry! All brands are welcome. All levels of experience can join the site and post their education event. And because it's for the hair, beauty and wellness industry only there's no competition with music or arts events that often dominate regular ticketing sites. On other sites, Hairdressers can get a little lost because of the overwhelming number of events in their city. Why is no one talking about redheads with unwanted patchy glowing haircolour? It's insanely important to know how to avoid hot roots and banding with reds but hairdressers seem to struggle with this and clients are trying to ignore the problem and just accept it. It doesn't have to be like this! Now this is where colouring for Redheads can get very tricky, because not everyone wants to look like they just stepped out of a salon, right? Many red and copper clients want it to be “natural-looking”. Root Glow or Hot Roots is not natural. It looks like the colour formula is a F*ck-up! In this episode, we're talking about Peroxide Choice for Redheads. I'll be sharing with you 4 must-know pro tips specific to choosing developers for intermixing with red and copper hair colours. --------------------- Register for my Live online Copper Hair Colour Masterclass. Copper will always be trending, whether we call it Kendall Copper, Cowgirl Copper or Pumpkin Spice, it's a classic colour that all Hairdressers must know how to do. You can not simply have one tube of colour you mix up for every Copper request because there are so many variations that range from brownish caramels to vibrant orange and everything in between. Cowgirl Copper, also known as Red Copper or Rusty Red, draws its inspiration from the American West. What sets it apart is the balance between fiery red and natural copper hues, creating a mesmerising, multidimensional effect that's both vibrant and wearable. Cowgirl Copper is the hottest colour trend of the moment & it's a heck of a lot spicier than Caramel. I love this trend within the red hair colour spectrum because it's luring more and more brunettes to try something new. They're stepping away from the ash balayage requests and feeling brave to get a warm glow-up. Yay! Finally! In this podcast, I made an exciting announcement! I'm hosting a LIVE Online FREE Masterclass for Hairdressers and Salon Owners to learn How To Achieve Copper Hair Colour without Red or Root Glow. For the first time, I'm including 3 epic bonus lessons that are shared as a series in the leadup to the main event in just over a week. Registration for tickets has opened today! As a hairdresser, I understand there's a lot of misleading or contradictory information about hair colour formulations. It's time to stop sacrificing brightness and tone with fashion colours for grey coverage and vice versa. It's also time to stop blaming the brand you use. In this podcast episode, I'll share the Secret why choosing Gold instead of a Natural Base is not your best option for Fashion colour Grey Coverage, including Redheads! To achieve consistent and predictable grey coverage results, always opt for 'N' in grey coverage, including for Redheads! 'N' is more predictable than using 'G'. Most 'N' series already contain Gold, so in fact, you're already using some Gold when you opt for this. If you have a Redhead grey coverage request and choose to use 'Gold' you might get grey coverage. You might also get Root Glow. You will definitely get more Gold than desirable and probably end up needing to correct it with toners. Don't do it! Gold is a “NO” from me. Whatever the percentage of grey your client has is the percentage of ‘Natural' or Base colour you will need to cover their greys successfully. Trust me. That works. I've built my wildly successful haircolour business by becoming the go-to girl when Redheads find their first grey. Ever felt the weight of the world on your shoulders? As hairdressers, we often give so much of ourselves to our clients that we forget to replenish our own spirits. It's time to wave goodbye to burnout, anxiety and those limiting beliefs! There's a powerful technique that's been quietly revolutionising the beauty and wellness industry: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping. As hairdressers, we know that our chairs often become confessional booths, with clients sharing their innermost thoughts and emotions. This can be really challenging for hairdressers to navigate, especially when you have your own emotional shit to deal with. I'm talking with Australian hairdresser and educator, Danny Lent, about working through limited beliefs and becoming fearlessly authentic using EFT Tapping. What if we told you that EFT can help you become more confident and grounded in and outside your salon? In this podcast episode, we're diving into a fascinating topic that's all about transforming not just hair, but also your state of mind. So, whether you're snipping, styling, or coloring, get ready to tap into a new realm of holistic well-being that could revolutionize the way you approach both your craft and your life. Listen to learn how to tap away anxiety and how healing can be F-U-N!! ------------------------------------ Steal My 3 Top Trending Colour Formulas for Redheads here: https://www.kristinarussell.online/stealmyformulas Full show notes can be found at https://www.kristinarussell.com.au/147 SEND ME A DM ON INSTAGRAM - let's chat! https://www.instagram.com/colourkristina
