At the climax of World Pride 2023, Sydney throws a huge street festival in the heart of the LGBTQ community, and thousands walk across the Harbour Bridge in a demonstration for equality and justice the likes of which Australia hasn't seen since the 2003 aboriginal Walk for Reconciliation (Barry McKay reports)! Dr Clara Tuck Meng Soo is a Canberra GP and a transgender woman. She is now principal of the practice she joined in 1996 when it was owned by the legendary Dr Peter Rowland. Dr Rowland was one of the first out gay doctors in the country. He founded the practice in the early 1980s when the HIV/AIDS epidemic was first emerging in Australia. The practice became a safe haven for the LGBTQI+ community of Canberra. On 25 June 1996 Dr Rowland was shot and killed at his home when he disturbed two men who were trying to rob him. Although the judge at the time found insufficient evidence to call the murder a gay hate crime, many in the community felt that was exactly what it was. Today Dr Soo and her colleagues are well known for running a practice that is a safe and trusted health care space for trans and other gender-diverse people. “I would estimate that in an average week, probably about 30% to 40% of the patients I see are LGBTQI+,” says Dr Soo. “And a vast proportion of that would be people who are transgender. “In the early days, when I first joined the practice, we had quite a lot of lesbian and gay patients. Over the years that proportion has diminished, because I think that being sexuality-diverse is actually seen as being more mainstream now. So, a lot of patients who are gay or lesbian feel quite comfortable going to their local GP, expecting that GP will not be homophobic.” Perhaps because of the environment she works is, Dr Soo says she has not experienced much transphobia. She transitioned about five years ago. But things could have been different. “It may have been different if I had transitioned 20 years ago, when the social environment was much less accepting,” she says. “If I transitioned at that time, it may have been acceptable for some of my professional colleagues who are less comfortable with gender diversity, to actually voice that to me. That's not acceptable now.” Dr Soo will take part in the Human Rights Conference which will run from 1-3 March as part of Sydney World Pride. She will give a presentation on barriers to gender-affirming healthcare for trans and gender diverse people at 12.15pm (AEDT) on Wednesday 1 March. For more information about accessing the conference, visit sydneyworldpride.com. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
WorldPride is the biggest event on the world's LGBTQIA+ calendar. This year, it's being hosted by Sydney – the first time WorldPride is held in the Southern hemisphere – coinciding with the iconic Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. This year, RACS is participating in WorldPride alongside several other medical colleges. The involvement has come about through the advocacy of a new LGBTQIA+ community, Pride in Medicine. Two key figures of the group are Dr Matt Marino, a surgical Fellow who is President of Pride in Medicine and Dr Sarah Rennie, Aotearoa New Zealand Surgical Advisor and a driver of this initiative for RACS. Both participated in the Mardi Gras parade. The College's participation demonstrates its advocacy on behalf of the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQIA+ communities. It is also part of the College's strategic focus of building a culture of respect and embracing diversity as well as serving all communities equitably to build sustainable surgical services. In this episode, we're talking about LGBTQI+ visibility in the hair industry, pronouns, positive actionable steps for allies, and how to create a gender-affirming space and inclusive salon for all clients. I live in Sydney Australia, which is the host city for this year's world pride, plus the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is happening. I am thrilled to be speaking with an out and proud lesbian business owner, Megan Evans, about her colourful hairdressing career and the personal challenges during her journey of coming out to her clientele in a professional setting with support from family and friends. Salon Owner & Educator Megan Evans has a passion for creative colour and technique and loves creating colours, cuts, and styles that are complimentary and flattering for her clients. The hair and beauty industry has always been considered a safer space for people within the LGBTQI+ community, but we still have a long way to go with education, acceptance, and understanding of how to make sure as an industry that works so closely with our community and clients that we continue forward momentum. This podcast is part of our Sydney World Pride 2023 series created to help you with actionable steps you can take right now to make all folks welcome in your salon. ---------------------- Want to learn more? Ivo van Hove is renowned as one of the most innovative — and divisive — theatre directors working today. The Belgian's enthralling stage adaptations of classic works consistently subvert expectations. Now, van Hove's adaptation of the confronting novel A Little Life is coming to the Adelaide Festival. Also, a married lesbian couple with two children face divorce in Blessed Union, a new comedy at Belvoir, and Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, the longest-running play on London's West End, is touring Australia. But is it a paragon of modern theatre or a tourist trap?

We're chatting with Lara Andallo, the talented Filipino-Australian musician who just released her latest EP "Diamonds and Deja Vu" on the opening day of Sydney World Pride. This EP showcases Lara's musical range, with a beautiful blend of jazz, pop, and 2000s RNB influences, and addresses issues that are close to her heart, particularly in the lead single "Year 3000," which explores a future where equality is no longer a political talking point. We dive into the sonic inspirations behind this EP, and how Lara's personal experiences have influenced her songwriting. Lara shares with us how a dance injury shifted her focus back to music, and reveals some of the best feedback she ever received from none other than Ed Sheeran. We also discuss the fun and dorky side of Lara that fans may not be familiar with yet.Lara Andallo: Instagram / Facebook / SpotifyCatch Lara on tour here. Thanks again to Lara Andallo for her time. A haircut could be affirming a look, including your gender. Hair Has No Gender yet so many salons are still offering men's and women's haircuts. I commit to embracing diversity and eliminating discrimination in the hairdressing and beauty industry. I am proudly a member of The Dresscode Project. The DCP is a global alliance of salons and barbershops committed to providing positive, gender-affirming services for LGBTQ+ clients. My role as their Australian Change Maker is creating safer spaces with transparency around gender-free pricing and terminology within consultations and services through education. I reached out to Jain Moralee, CEO of Twenty 10 in Sydney, Australia, during the 2023 Sydney World Pride to chat with us. Twenty-10 work with people across Sydney and New South Wales who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, non-binary, intersex, questioning, queer, asexual and more (LGBTIQA+) people and others of diverse genders and sexualities, their families and communities. In honour of Sydney WorldPride, this episode focuses on travel safety within the LGBTQIA+ community. With 70 countries in the world today still criminalising consensual same sex conduct, it's critical LGBTQIA+ travellers - and their travel companions - are aware of their personal risk profile and how it could influence their safety. Our host Frank Harrison is joined by Sydney WorldPride's Pride and Diversity Officer, Matt Akersten, and Cover-More's CTO and CMO, Lisa Hilton and Chris Noble respectively. Together they discuss safety perceptions and expectations, researching safe destinations, finding accurate information, the effort and planning that's gone into hosting such a large event as Sydney WorldPride, and more. Cover-More is proud to be the official travel insurance partner for Sydney WorldPride 2023.

Isaac Humphries is the only pro male basketball player in the world who is currently playing and publicly gay, having made a tearful, viral announcement to his Melbourne United teammates late last year. The 25-year-old stands 211 centimetres tall and is known for his defensive “beast mode” qualities on court, but in this conversation with Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall, Humphries shows his thoughtful side, stepping listeners through the private pain of the coming out process, including his decision to become one of just a handful of elite sportsmen playing today to share that side of themselves in public. On the eve of Sydney WorldPride 2023, Humphries also details the aftermath of that decision, both good and bad. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's fabulous to be be back for a summer series of Out in Sydney. I'll be bringing you a bunch of new episodes at least until Mardi Gras 2022. In this kick off episode I speak to Kate Wickett, the CEO of Sydney World Pride 2023. Some people have said that World Pride will be Mardi Gras rebranded but that's not actually right. The two organisations will be working very closely together. Kate helps us understand the size and significance of the festival and how you can be involved. Discover Sydney World Pride here https://sydneyworldpride.com Also, I profile Suzy Wrong who's an actor, blogger and theatre critic. Suzy is an inspiration for Sydney creatives. Suzy campaigns for more Queer representation across stage and screen. Suzy tells us about her leading role in the SBS show Hungry Ghosts, and appeals for a new generation of writers. Visit Suzy's website at https://suzygoessee.com Out in Sydney is about lots of things but it's mainly a celebration of the LGBT+ community in Sydney. If you're planning to take part in Mardi Gras, I'd love to profile groups getting ready to march. Also, get your hands on a copy of Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters. Let's climb into a book that's both good fun but invites us to see the world a little differently. Support the Queer bookshop on Oxford Street, The Darlinghurst Bookshop at https://www.thebookshop.com.au We'll circle back to the book and its themes in future episodes. On September 7th 2019 at The Bearded Tit in Redfern, Nana Miss Koori, with a Host of Stunners, including Mad B, Chel Torres, Ima Lusty, Tyra Bankstown and Nova Gina held a fundraiser to raise funds to assist Nana Miss Koori to travel to Athens in October to represent Australia for the Sydney 2023 World Pride Bid.A successful bid would see Sydney become the first destination in the Southern Hemisphere to host World Pride, the marquee international LGBTQI pride event.World Pride 2023 would coincide with the 45th anniversary of the first Mardi Gras Parade and the 50th Anniversary of the first Australian Gay Pride Week.Sydney's bid to host WorldPride 2023 is about much more than Sydney and Australia. It's about the Asia-Pacific, one of InterPride's most diverse regions that is home to 60% of the world's population, yet too often overlooked and under-represented. Many LGBTQI communities within this region are denied fundamental human rights.Sydney World Pride 2023 will be the global event that unites LGBTIQ communities and Prides from across the world and brings them to Asia Pacific. Together, we will listen and learn from some of the most isolated LGBTIQ+ communities in the world, celebrate as one and show bold leadership as activists into the future.
