The band's powerful lyrics spoke to the Latinx experience in the US and resonated with popular struggles across Latin America, making waves worldwide.  Growing up in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, the heart of the city's Mexican community, Martin's musical journey began in the '90s. Since then, he's gone on to other unique projects, like the queercore punk band Limp Wrist and his latest venture, a solo electronic dance music project called NRRRV. As if that weren't enough, Martin is also a talented photographer. Please tune in to hear his inspiring story and the incredible impact he's had on the music scene and beyond.

DBL#24 '90s HARDCORE MIXTAPE side A' - PETE vs PEET (Narcosis, Hard to Swallow, Red Right Hand, Underclass, Burst of Silence). This episode is a slighly different one in that it's half conversation and half music. The focus being on the type of 90s U.S. hardcore that we both loved so much. It was a nice way for both of us to find a common bond and also talk about the bands he did vocals in like NARCOSIS, HARD TO SWALLOW, RED RIGHT HAND, UNDERCLASS, BURST OF SILENCE etc. Some big names weren't included but it goes without saying no 45 minutes would be complete if it didn't include the essentials like LOS CRUDOS, DROPDEAD or BORN AGAINST. There will be a follow on episode dedicated to 90s Euro hardcore which is equally as important but less talked about nowadays. You can most likely find any of these bands on Discogs or YouTube, Soulseek file sharing or via bandcamp in some cases... all of the original physical releases are worth picking up if you find anything interesting? In Rebel Music in the Triumphant Empire (Oxford University Press, 2020), musicologist David Pearson explores the changing landscape of punk in the United States in the 1990s. Pearson examines how the 1990s underground punk renaissance transformed the punk scene into a site of radical opposition to the American empire. Nazi skinheads were ejected from the punk scene; apathetic attitudes were challenged; women, Latino, and LGBTQ participants asserted their identities and perspectives within punk; the scene debated the virtues of maintaining DIY purity versus venturing into the musical mainstream; and punks participated in protest movements from animal rights to stopping the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal to shutting down the 1999 WTO meeting. Punk lyrics offered strident critiques of American empire, from its exploitation of the Third World to its warped social relations. Numerous subgenres of punk proliferated to deliver this critique, such as the blazing hardcore punk of bands like Los Crudos, propagandistic crust-punk/dis-core, grindcore, and power violence with tempos over 800 beats per minute, and So-Cal punk with its combination of melody and hardcore. Musical analysis of each of these styles and the expressive efficacy of numerous bands reveals that punk is not merely simplistic three-chord rock music, but a genre that is constantly revolutionizing itself in which nuances of guitar riffs, vocal timbres, drum beats, and song structures are deeply meaningful to its audience, as corroborated by the robust discourse in punk zines. In Episode 2 of Metropolis Rising, my guest is Latinx artist Martin Sorrondeguy (also known as Martin Crudo).  Martin is best known as the founder, lead singer, and lyricist of the Latinx hardcore punk bank, Los Crudos, who quickly came to have an impact around the world.  The lyrics of the band’s songs spoke politically to the Latinx experience in the United States but also responded to popular struggles across Latin America.  The band originated in the 1990s in the Pilsen neighborhood, the center of the political and cultural life of Chicago’s Mexican community, where Martin grew up.  Later, Sorrondeguy moved on to other musical projects, including the queercore punk band, Limp Wrist, and most recently a solo electronic dance music project called NRRRV.  Martin is also an accomplished photographer.

Declan Synnott is not only a gentleman, he’s also scholar – with an actual PhD in Punk. I know I’ve talked about my own perceived parallels between Punk and Traditional Irish music many times in the past, but I think this is the most in depth and articulate it has ever come out. Featuring tracks by Cock Sparrer, Christopher Lee, Crass, Jimmy Crowley, Christy Moore, Extravision, Frank Harte, Rudimentary Peni, Los Crudos and the Pecker Dunne.

DBL #6 - NICK LOARINGSome people may remember him as Nick Enslaved if they bought records from his label/distro back in the 90s or saw him doing vocals for the bands Ebola or Boxed In. He now runs The Print Project workshop in Shipley near Bradford where he operates a bunch of printing presses and has made print his business for the past ten years. Nick's artwork is very bold, geometric and colourful. You can buy this work directly or if you are local to the Newcastle area visit Northern Print for a look in person. Here is a cool short video where he explains the methods used to make these prints. His first gig doing vocals in a hardcore band was for Ebola supporting Los Crudos here in Newcastle at the Broken Doll, 1996. This was an important show for me and also for Nick because it was his vocal debut which he mentions later on in the conversation. He also did some sleeve printing nearly 20 years ago now for a record I was involved in making. I remember asking if he could print the sleeve as cheaply as possible and still have it look good. He did both no problem... I'd always been grateful for that. There's lots of information here and it was great to get in depth and hear him talk so enthusiastically about skateboarding, the 90s UK h/c scene and printmaking amongst other things...Follow on Instagram for related pictures @destroybeforelisteninghttps://www.instagram.com/destroybeforelistening/Music:IntroSolanki - 'Bureaucracy'OutroEbola - 'Bring me the head of Mike Brinson'You can listen via any usual podcast platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Deezer or directly here through  Simplecast. Alternatively you can use the RSS feed if needed. In the sixth episode of Barely Human, we look back at punk and hardcore through the lens of two artists who have been footnoted by mainstream histories. First we look at the London punk explosion through the eyes of Poly Styrene and her band X-Ray Spex, who went from selling kitsch anti-fashion accessories on Kings Road in 1976, to playing punk on Top of the Pops two years later. Then we turn to '90s hardcore heroes Los Crudos, a band who had the mission of putting culture into their sub-culture, by playing punk music in their local community halls, and singing entirely in Spanish. Barely Human is written and hosted by Max Easton, and produced by Jason L'Ecuyer and Output Media. OH HAI MARK! Welcome to the latest installment of the most belligerent podcast in the world, CINEPUNX! This episode is our very special SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW!!! Well, kind of. Ok, not really. Basically this episode we spend a LOT of time talking about some of the films we have seen recently. There is some Furious 7 discussion and some It Follows discussion. We talk about the recent Los Crudos show in Philadelphia. Crudos is one of Josh’s favorite bands so we have a lot to say about that, but also about the opening band Pure Disgust who were truly awesome. Liam also spends some time talking about one of his favorite movies of this year, Timbuktu, and then describing his love for but anxiety about Going Clear. Point is, we spend a lot of time discussing all kinds of things before we get to the point, that being summer movies. A point we decided on while recording. Sorry? Anyway, we spend a good amount of time running through some of the movies we are so excited to see this summer, and those we are not. WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT AND YOU TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR PARENTS AND YOUR BOSS AND THEN WE GET SO HUGE WE GET FREE STUFF LIKE COFFEE AND MOVIES!! SOUND NOTES: Well, early on in the recording Liam advises Josh to back off from his mic a little bit because he is coming through really loud. This was bad advice. Josh sounds like he is in another room for part of the show. The rest of the sound turned out ok though. Speaking of sound, big news. WE ARE HOSTING AN EVENT!! THIS EVENT WILL NOT ONLY BE AMAZING BUT HELP US BY NEW EQUIPMENT!! HEY, COME TO THIS EVENT AND/OR TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE EVENT! Ok cool peace.
