This week Dave returns as we dive into our bag of covermount CDs and unearth a real gem. If you were buying Kerrang! in August 2002, you might remember issue 918 with The Prodigy on the cover. What you definitely remember is the cover-mount CD that came with it - Hometaping Volume Two, curated by Amen's Casey Chaos. This wasn't your typical corporate compilation of radio-friendly metal and whatever major labels were pushing that month. This was a proper education in underground extremity, compiled by someone who'd been living in the trenches since he was photographed at Black Flag gigs in 1982. Casey wasn't messing about. He whittled down his selection from 60 songs, phoned Henry Rollins and Satyr personally for unreleased tracks, and designed the cover himself. The result was 26 tracks of whiplash-inducing genius that introduced countless metal and punk fans to bands they'd never have discovered otherwise. From Refused's "New Noise" and Iron Monkey's feral sludge to birthday party's pre-Bad Seeds insanity and proper OG punk from Discharge and X-Ray Specs, this was cultural education disguised as a free CD. The fact we're still dissecting every track choice 20+ years later proves Casey achieved something genuinely special - a compilation that worked as both a history lesson and a challenge to dig deeper into the underground. Welcome to the House of the Iron Monkey. A mix of House and Voguing music.
When corruption runs rampant, and the powerful exploit the weak, only a hero can defend the people, and bring the unjust to their knees. A Robin Hood of the east must team up with a Chinese folk hero in order to bring down a powerful government official with a deadly Buddha palm! Death-dealing nuns, killer Shaolin monks, and an army of soldiers can't stop the righteous efforts of the one and only… IRON MONKEY! Listen in as we discuss the 1993 “wire-fu” classic, ‘Iron Monkey', directed by the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping and produced by visionary filmmaker Tsui Hark. Included in this over the top martial arts extravaganza is a diverse and eclectic cast, led by superstar Donnie Yen, genre favorite Yu Rongguang, and… a female Wong Fei Hung?! Add to that some absolutely INSANE fight scenes, and this film is perfect for die-hard martial arts film aficionados, or those interested in dipping their toes into the world of Kung Fu cinema for the first time! Don't forget to subscribe, download, like, and share with your friends! Thanks again for the continued support and we hope you enjoy!
On this week's episode we talk about IRON MONKEY directed by the legendary Yuen Woo-ping. As novice martial arts film fans we were blown away by the action choreography on display in this film. Let us know your thoughts.

Lethal Mullet Podcast Episode 133: Iron Monkey On tonight's episode the Mullet heads into the prequel to the Once Upon a Time in China series: IRON MONKEY. This is a much loved classic, produced by Tsui Hark, directed by action maestro Yuen Woo Ping, and starring Donnie Yen. This is a story about the mythic Robin Hood like figure of the Iron Monkey, who battles corruption, and gives back to the poor. Along with Wong Kae-ying, the father of Wong Fei-hung (the character later to be played by Jet Li), they battle a corrupt city official, and stamp out evil. With some of the best Hung-Gar Kung-fu put to screen, this is some of the best choreography ever done.

DBL#12 Justin GreavesJustin has been active playing music since the 80s, from drummer for hire to guitarist in his own group Crippled Black Phoenix. Whether it's in a Jethro Tull covers band with his Dad, or playing the musical saw on a track with Nick Cave and Debbie Harry he's been all over so many different things. Starting out in hardcore bands like Hard to Swallow then the infamous sludge of Iron Monkey, to the doom of Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine (with Lee Dorian and Sunn members) and Electric Wizard's 'We Live' album of 2004.Switching to guitar he formed the musically diverse group Crippled Black Phoenix in 2004 and has now recorded their thirteenth studio album to date this year. Releasing on Invada, Clearview and Season of Mist they have toured extensively with varying lineups and players. The conversation also takes in the CBP choice of cover versions like their 'Horrific Honorifics' album and the Jeffrey Lee Pierce sessions project. Justin also discusses his love of film scoring having provided music for 'The Devil's Business' (2011) and 'Future Shock (2014). DBL#11 Jim Rushby and Steve Watson from Iron MonkeyThe band were formed in Nottingham in 1994 and were made up of members who had played in various punk and hardcore bands. They created a unique musical mix in the UK at that point in time, using the term 'sludge'.Over the course of their original five year run they experienced several line up changes but released a highly regarded self-titled debut CD, a full length album ‘Our Problem' on Earache and a split with Church of Misery on Man's Ruin Records. With a seemingly nihilistic attitude to both audience and press the band ploughed their own furrow in the UK scene until announcing their demise via a press release in 1999. Tragically in 2002 Iron Monkey frontman Johnny Morrow died of an unexpected heart attack. In 2016 founding members Jim and Steve restarted the band with Jim doing both guitar and vocals. They released the album 9/13 on Relapse Records in 2017. During the hiatus between albums they have secured a devout fanbase which has steadily grown during these intervening years. I'm coming at this review as a fan of the game, fan of Hong Kong cinema, and as a martial artist. As a fan of Hong Kong cinema I expected so much more from this movie. I was born in the 80's but I'm a child of the 90's and that was the era where great martial arts films were being imported from Hong Kong. I grew up on films like Millionaires Express, Once Upon a Time in China, Iron Monkey, Wing Chun and Heroic Trio just to name a few. In this episode that was stolen from a wealthier podcast, Vanessa challenges Elijah to find the perfect martial arts pairing for The People Under The Stairs, a classic horror story about the scariest thing of all: The obscenely wealthy. After crying for the first time on the podcast, Elijah counters with another tale of stealing from the rich to give to the masses, Iron Monkey. But can a movie without even a single cannibal match up to The People Under The Stairs? Has Vanessa ever gotten so high that she bombed on stage? And can billionaires enjoy horror movies? Find out, in this week’s double-feature discussion! The official snack pairing for The People Under The Stairs and Iron Monkey is s’mores that you make with chocolate coins. This episode was brought to you by a contempt for the ultra-wealthy. This week's topic might be the most obscure movie we've ever covered. Mirage (Hai shi shen lou / 海市蜃楼) is a Hong Kong martial arts adventure movie released on the 23rd of January in 1987. It tells the story of Tong, a photographer, who manages to take a photo of a woman he sees in a mirage. He then travels to the Silk Road to find her, getting pulled into many incredible action sequences featuring desert bandits, big explosions and goats. This week we talk about Iron Monkey!
This week on The Donnie Yen Show, Mike and Sean discuss two of the star's collaborations with director Yuen Woo-ping: 1993's kung fu epic Iron Monkey and 1985's breakdancing comedy Mismatched Couples. They also take a look at Donnie's latest release, Ip Man 3 and pick their Essential Dance Fights. They'll also examine Donnie's career as a whole and this week's music comes from the man himself.
We've previously covered martial arts movies but there was a time where they weren't necessarily getting the attention like they are now. While Jackie Chan broke through in American, lots of movies being made in China and Japan got attention but not on a mainstream level. Iron Monkey was on of the movies that broke through in America and got some high positive praise from critics. Rightfully so too. You care about the characters, the fight choreography is excellent, and the story is very easy to understand.
Avenging Force (1986) is how we avenge force movies after last week. Michael Dudikoff takes over Chuck Norris’ character role in this sort of sequel to Invasion U.S.A. Basically it’s more like American Ninja 1.5. Second half we talk a bunch of movies including Snowpiercer, Casino Jack, Ong Bak, Iron Monkey, Stealth and the […]

Matt Segal was raised in Florida and discovered his passion for rock climbing in the gym. He has been climbing since 1998 and quickly left the man-made holds for those naturally placed. He moved to Boulder, Colorado to grow his passion. He’s traveled the world, from China to Argentina, mostly focusing on establishing the most difficult traditional climbs he can find. Some of his proudest lines include The Iron Monkey (5.14) in Eldorado Canyon, CO, The Orangutan Overhang (5.14-) in Independence Pass, CO and Air China (5.13d R) in Liming, China. Recently he’s also collaborated with both scientists and photographers on National Geographic expeditions where his skills as a climber have proven to be valuable. He has started instant coffee company Alpine Start Foods providing high-quality coffee for adventurers.
