Laurent Schroeder-Lebec and Trevor de Brauw of Chicago instrumental band Pelican join us on the latest episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast to discuss 10 (technically 11) albums that influenced their new album, 'Flickering Resonance,' which arrives May 16 via Run For Cover. It's Pelican's first album in six years, first with Laurent back in the band in 12 years, and first for Run For Cover, following releases on Hydra Head and Southern Lord. Though Pelican have long been grouped with metal, they came up in the musically-diverse Chicago DIY scene of the '90s, surrounded by punk, hardcore, emo, post-hardcore, and more, and the classic albums (as well as one much more recent pick) that inspired 'Flickering Resonance' reflect that. -- The BrooklynVegan Show is brought to you in part by DistroKid, a service for musicians that allows you to easily upload your music to all major streaming platforms. DBL#25 Tony Sylvester (Fabric, Southern Records, The Dukes of Nothing, Turbonegro). This was very interesting conversation for me, a great window into the history of London post-hardcore band FABRIC. From the origins in 1992, recording the 'Body of Water' album, never finding their place or sound & ending with 'Lightbringer' in 1995. After this band ended he focused on his various positions within Southern distribution (Dischord, Touch and Go, Kranky, Southern Lord records etc.) for the rest of the 90s until joining THE DUKES OF NOTHING (featuring IRON MONKEY/ORANGE GOBLIN members). With this group he toured and released the album ' War and Wine' on his Eccentric Man imprint in 2002. Throughout the 2000s Tony was involved in the formation of the AURORA BOREALIS label with former FABRIC bandmate Andrew Hartwell. He also curated and coordinated the ambitious, decade long LATITUDES series of releases (CIRCLE, CHELSEA WOLFE, DANIEL HIGGS etc.) for the Southern label until his leaving in 2010. In 2011 he ended up becoming vocalist for the Norwegian 'deathpunk' group TURBONEGRO recording and touring throughout the 2010s. He currently focuses his time on men's fashion/lifestyle writing and his own AWMS clothing brand. Follow @destroybeforelistening Outro: THE DUKES OF NOTHING - Half Evil

This week on The Hardcore Humanism Podcast, we talk with musician, vocalist and songwriter William Duvall. Many people know Duvall as a member of the legendary rock band Alice in Chains. Duvall has been in the band for over a decade, during which time they put out albums such as Black Gives Way To Blue, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and Rainier Fog. But before he joined Alice In Chains, Duvall was in several previous bands, including being a founding member of the Atlanta hardcore punk rock band Neon Christ. And Duvall has just revealed that Neon Christ is reissuing a deluxe release of the band’s material from 1984 – a co-release between Southern Lord and DVL Recordings to celebrate Record Store Day (June 12th).This deluxe release was a wonderful opportunity for Duvall to share the story of how Neon Christ was formed and the obstacles he, his friends and band mates faced to realize their dream. And one of the most notable features of that story was the sheer determination that Duvall and Neon Christ showed in order to achieve their goals. The term “determination” can be defined as being resolved to carry out one’s purpose in life. Research suggests that people who have a stronger sense of purpose have increased longevity and healthier behaviors as well as increased work productivity and improved emotional coping. TDuvall pursued his hardcore punk purpose with Neon Christ in 1980’s Atlanta Georgia when there was barely any kind of punk rock scene. Duvall discovered his need to express himself authentically. And despite having no initial support, Duvall shares how he pursued this purpose through a singular focus on working hard to form Neon Christ and build a broad community of like-minded people. And while Duvall is now a full-fledged rock star in a legendary band, achieving both commercial and critical success, one of the most notable things about his journey with Neon Christ was how he dedicated himself to his purpose before having any sense that it would be “successful” in the conventional sense. We may not all become big-time rock stars. But if we pursue our passion, work hard to achieve it and build a supportive community around us, we can find excitement and fulfillment like we heard from Duvall.*****Newsletter: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/GBmf0iU/HardcoreHumanismSignUpInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hardcorehumanism/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardcoreHumanism/Twitter: https://twitter.com/hardcorhumanismLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hardcore-humanism

DBL#4 Martin SHIFT. When I'd initially thought of the idea to speak about the DIY attitude within music I didn't want to stick to one genre in particular. That said it usually goes hand in hand with punk rock, although not really the case here. Martin conceived the industrial/power electronics project SHIFT in Sweden in 1997 and moved it to the UK for nearly 20 years before returning back home again.I first met him via the  doom-metal message boards in the early/mid 2000s. At this point it was the only real meeting place for people into extreme music forms. The Southern Lord forum in particular attracted lots of people from the UK (specifically the NE). We'd made friends because of his label Unrest productions who I'd help out with in 07/08. Lots of phone calls over various logistics were made and he was definitely a part of things that were happening during that period.Martin is very straight ahead and intense about his music but he's always had my respect with what he's achieved and his uncompromising do it yourself mentality. We hadn't spoken in some years and it was my first time ever interviewing but it turned out great and really interesting hearing his perspective. Interview recorded back in May while he was in rural Sweden and didn't have a proper internet connection. Either way it's a great insight for anyone involved in the noisier more experimental UK scene in the 2000s.Follow on Instagram for related pictures @destroybeforelisteninghttps://www.instagram.com/destroybeforelistening/Music:IntroSolanki - 'Bureaucracy'OutroShift - 'Circling Raptor'You can listen via any usual podcast platforms like iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, Deezer or directly through  Simplecast. Alternatively you can use the RSS feed if needed. Some of my favorite episodes are the ones where creative admiration and friendship meet and the episode is more on par with two friends catching up as opposed to an interview to promote a new album. This week’s episode is one of those; I had the opportunity to catch up with my friend Trevor Shelley-De Brauw of Pelican, a band that has been performing and releasing great records for nearly twenty years.Trevor and I talk a bit about the new Pelican record, “Midnight Stories” on Southern Lord available June 7, 2019 as well as RLYR, his other project with Locrian drummer Steven Hess. We also get philosophical and at times inspirational.Intro: “Midnight and Mescaline”Outro: ”Final Breath” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Here is the 63rd installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Worcester thrashers High Command. I discovered High Command on my most recent NY trip, when they shared a bill with Black Tusk and Whores at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn. They were the odd men out that night, with their fast thrash standing in stark contrast to the slower, more "rock" centric bands that played that night. But what stood out to me most about them was the fact that they hailed from Worcester, a city in Massachusetts that I visit almost once a year, and where I had just come back from the day before. So I was interested in sitting down with them to find out more about their scene. We did the interview in their van, parked across the street from Saint Vitus. We talked about their history, their upcoming release on Southern Lord, and what makes Worcester so metal. It was an informative talk, and one that already has me planning my next trip to Worcester. My thanks to the guys in High Command for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
