S6E17 or Season Six Episode Seventeen of The Story Rock and Roll Radio Show went out live at 7:00 PM on the 27th of April 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. We kicked off with ACDC and a track off Back in Black called 'Shoot to Thrill'. It was Freedom Day in South Africa so we celebrated our freedom from electricity, water, and roads without potholes. We listened to stuff like Badlands 'Streets Cry Freedom' and Tesla ‘Freedom Slaves' to stay in the moment. The Immortals track this week, (that's a track over 7 minutes long that is fully representative of what an artist is all about but generally is too long for radio airplay) featured Rory Gallagher performing his masterpiece ‘A Million Miles Away'. This version was nine minutes long and came from his fantastic album Irish Tour '74 40th Anniversary Edition. Special shou out to bass guitarist Gerry McAvoy whose contribution is immense. There were some awesome moments on this show, like the power pairings of Dirty Honey's ‘Another Last Time' with The Darkness' ‘Holding My Own'. Here the synergy comes from the emotional slow bluesy guitars, it is just amazing. There wasn't a lot of new stuff so we continued with Metallica's 72 Seasons as well as Ian Hunter's Defiance pt 1. There was a new Texas Hippie Coalition so planned to give that a run but ran out of time, next week, I promise. On the local music, we had a short interview with flash rockers Marene and took in their brand new release ‘Partners In Crime', it is a great track and we also took a listen to ‘Poison' by Jackson Colt just to keep the SA music flowing. Jackson Colt is such an awesome guitarist, it's great how we have all these guitarists who were exposed to guitar-based music from bands like Kiss, Van Halen, and all the '80s mega-bands by parents like me :-), we are certainly richer for it. The Ultimate Challenge this week featured Tom Petty – Hypnotic Eye, Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways, Accept – Blind Rage, and Seether – Isolate and Medicate. No clear winner here, I got votes for all of them, but then Accept just crept in by a last minute vote. Top lyric goes to Seether for “Because you're the one who needs the fucking intervention" line although in retrospect The Jam with 'Thick as Thieves' a song all about the ANC was right up there. The end of this show was a mad rush to squeeze in UK Punk from The Stranglers, The Clash, and The Jam, also some Kid Rock, and for the first time ever on TSORR a track from Eminem. We finished with something completely different and it went down very well, enjoy. Artists featured: ACDC, Badlands, Rough Cutt, Airbourne, La>a Guns, Adrenaline, Clutch, Dirty Honey, The Darkness, The Offspring, Danko Jones, Aerosmith, Rainbow, Rainbow, Five Finger Death Punch, System of a Down, Tesla, The Dead Daisies, Marene, Jackson Colt, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, Ian Hunter, Ace Frehley, Rory Gallagher, Seether, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Foo Fighters, Accept, The Clash, the Jam, The Stranglers, Kid Rock, Eminem, Monty PythonThe Story of Rock and Roll. Released as UK Punk raged, for me the greatest album by David Bowie artistically. A near remake of the also 10/10 Low from not even a year before - Low may get more plaudits for being first, but, that minimalist album is just shaded by its maximalist followup as far as outright satisfaction goes.
Birmingham UK drummer Mark Williams (The Jacobites) joins us this week to discuss 'Strawberries', the fifth studio album - and final one featuring their classic late-70s line-up of Vanian, Sensible, Gray and Scabies - by British punk Gods The Damned. It's a fantastic album by one of Rob's all-time favorite bands, so expect some mild gushing ahead... Songs featured in this episode: I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night - The Damned (Live at Woolwich Coronet, 1985); Don't You Ever Leave Me - The Jacobites; Happy Talk, Wot - Captain Sensible; I Advance Masked - Andy Summers and Robert Fripp; Fun Factory, Ignite - The Damned; Genetix - The Stranglers; Generals, Stranger On The Town, Dozen Girls, The Dog, Gun Fury (of Riot Forces), Pleasure And The Pain, Life Goes On - The Damned; Come As You Are - Nirvana; Eighties - Killing Joke; Bad Time For Bonzo - The Damned; We've Got A Bigger Problem Now - Dead Kennedys; Bonzo Goes To Bitburg - Ramones; Disco Man, Citadel, Billy Bad Breaks, Under The Floor Again, Don't Bother Me - The Damned; Crossroads Theme - Tony Hatch; Life Goes On - Young Fresh Fellows
S6E5 aired at 19h00 on 2 Feb 2023 live on Rebel Rock Radio. The opening track was by Warrior Soul, I have some good memories of this band. Marq Vas and I discovered them in the early ‘90s and their Last Decade, Dead Century album, where this track came from was always in heavy rotation. Next up, Thunder Mother with ‘Borrowed Time' conjured up the image of thousands of lighters held aloft, and ‘Turn of the Screw' from Heaven & Hell again reminded us of the magnificence of Ronnie James Dio's Voice. During the show, Tim sent me the list of 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominations and coincidently four of them were in the 'possible track' playlist. So with that, I had to play Iron Maiden, Sound Garden, Sheryl Crow, and Warren Zevon. Good luck to all of them. Billy Idol has a very cool thing going, he has released an EP every year since 2021, I assume it is on purpose, and we will get another one in 2023. It keeps things fresh and as long as Steve Stevens is with him I will buy every single one. Suicidal Tendencies raised the tempo by a factor of about ten with a delightful track called ‘Disco's Out, Murders In'. We had a bit of fun trying to figure out which of these four albums released in 1984 you would choose if you could only choose two. We had Van Halen, - 1984, Iron Maiden - Powerslave, Metallica - Ride The Lightening and, Judas Priest - Defenders of the Faith. There was no clear favorite which was to be expected given the quality of those albums, and that was the point. For my money, it was Metallica and the mighty Judas Priest, but tomorrow it might be different. Next week we will look at 1980. We took a listen to 'The Sentinel' and 'Creeping Death'. South African music was well represented by Future Radio, comprising Johnny Future and Drikus Roets, two very talented artist/musicians. We heard a track called 'DOI' off their Freedom album, then we had Johnathan Martin with 'Don't Want To Know' and finally SA Rock and Bluesman Kenny Hughes who spoke to me this week and told me a bit about the new track 'Midnight Man'. We listened to what he said about it and then took a listen to it. It is a great track and people liked it a lot. The plan is to do more of these short 5 min interviews and to give the artist a chance to tell you about their music. The UK Punk slot was ably filled by The Stranglers, UK Subs, and Sham 69 and then it was time for our weekly Immortals, i.e. tracks over 7 min long that will live forever. This week it was The Fall of the Peacemakers by Molly Hatchet. For my money the highlights of this show were Indian rockers Girish & the Chronicles, their new album Back on Earth is simply stunning, its got everything you would expect from a top-flight '80s style metal band. The brand new Iggy Pop is out and we played ‘Morning Show' which is wonderful. I advised you to listen to it a couple of times. It is a serious grower. There is plenty more to get into, this episode was a cracker. Cheers and thanks for listening. Artists featured: Warrior Soul, Thunder Mother, Heaven & Hell, Black Stone Cherry, Soundgarden, L.A. Rats, Slash, Suicidal Tendencies, Black Label Society, Billy Idol, Skid Row, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Moon Tooth, Pearl Jam, Future Radio, Johnathan Martin, Kenny Hughes, Girish & the Chronicles, ACDC, Judas Priest, Metallica, The Stranglers, UK Subs, Sham 69, Molly Hatchet, Santana, Uriah Heep, Iggy Pop, Bush, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, U2, Tim Minchin, Robbie Robertson, Warren Zevon, SlayerThe Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 4 of the brand new Season 6 kicked off at precisely 19h00 on 26 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up was a band who are no strangers to TSORR, Great White with ‘Never Trust a Pretty Face'. We had a nice up-tempo start cycling through Motor Sister, and Accept and then took a huge step back into the past with the ever-fresh sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival and ‘Green River', from there we went to Aussie for some Cold Chisel and a track called ‘Misfits'. We stayed there for Airborne and moved on to Tesla via Halestorm and a track called Legendary which of course she is. Lzzy Hale is the real deal. The Tesla track was ‘Gettin' Better' off the RePlugged Live album which is amazing. Tesla fans check it out. Black Star Riders (without Scott Gorham) released a new album last week called Wrong Side of Paradise, we listened to the title track. It's one of those that fall into the ‘Songs that could be about South Africa' category. Talking of that we also had ‘Losing More Than You Ever Had' (Accept) and ‘Stand & Deliver (Airbourne) as further examples. Def Leppard's colossal breakthrough album Pyromania turned 40 this week and KISS main man Paul Stanley turned 70. We celebrated with Rock, Rock (Till You Drop), and Love Gun' respectively. 'Peace is Free' from Black stone Cherry calmed things down a bit, and we stayed calm with ‘Soul' from 12th Avenue and wished Mark Haze, vocalist extraordinaire who formed 12th Avenue, a speedy recovery from the back-op he had this week. Linkin Park with ‘One Step Closer' sounded great and then we got to Megadeth with 'Life in Hell' off their latest album and a brand new track from Metallica called ‘Screaming Suicide'. TSORR predicts that 2023 will be Metallica's year. They seem to have hit a sweet spot and are feeling the love and appreciation of the people of Planet Earth. The South African stuff was, as we say in these parts, 'poes heavy'. Kill Frenzy out of Cape Town and Diverted Disorder from the Vaal gave us our weekly dose of Linda take a walk music. Check out both bands if you dig the heavier stuff. This week's Immortal track came from Led Zep with 'Since I've Been Loving You' off Led Zeppelin III. We had UK Punk courtesy of Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, and Stiff Little Fingers which led us to U2 with 'I Will Follow'. Prepare to hear a lot of U2, I am busy with Bono's book Surrender, it is a great read. Even if you are not a fan it is so rich with descriptions of the times, places, and characters of the times that it is well worth delving into. the Audible version brings it all to life. We ended with Slayer and another song that could be about South Africa called 'Seasons In the Abyss'. Artists featured: Great White, Jorn, Motor Sister, Accept, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Ratt, Halestorm, Nickelback, Tesla, John Mellencamp, Black Star Riders. Phil X & the Drills, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, The Black Crowes, White Zombie, Emigrate, Glenn Hughes, Black Stone Cherry, 12th Avenue, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, U2, Me and That Man, Kill Frenzy, Diverted Disorder, Piet Botha, Windowpane, Slayer. Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado. Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell. It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it's a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well. Dee has done OK though. Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!! Joe Perry at his finest. We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you
Welcome to the second last show of Season 5, i.e. Episode 51. It marks the 5th birthday of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show. This episode went out live on 22 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 sharp. Sadly the cell phone towers did not play ball and the signal was a serious killjoy. The show however went out just perfectly on the podcast. I used the opportunity to showcase some of the tracks that make TSORR what it is. Some of these tracks are pretty deep and have backstories that are detailed in the book The Story of Rock and Roll. This show gives an incredibly short reminiscence of some TSORR history and a bit of a run-through of the bands that form the foundations of The Story of Rock and Roll. The idea was to celebrate the music and show appreciation for listeners who have supported the show for the last 5 years. The celebration kicked off with The Boomtown Rats and the opening track off The Fine Art of Surfacing. This album is part of the critical few albums that mark the start of my lifelong love of rock and roll. From there we moved to KISS and Judas Priest, two bands without which there wouldn't be a TSORR. The tracks ‘Strutter' and ‘Metal Gods' did the honours. Next, we covered two very important SA bands, Radio Rats with ZX Dan and Rabbitt with ‘Working For The People. We checked out some of the key bands that form a big chunk of TSORR, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC, and Ozzy Osbourne. From there we covered some Punk because without a slight UK Punk detour this would not be TSORR. We listened to The Strangler with Nice n' Sleazy, Sex Pistols with ‘Submission', and Stiff Litte Finger with ‘Alternative Ulster' off Inflammable Material. We went back to the Metal with Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Accept, W.A.S.P., and Metallica. From there we moved on to the Radio Show and the Mix FM days and how Leon Ekonomides offered me my own show in 2017. I played the track Leon and I bonded over when he interviewed me about the book. The track was ‘Gunfire' by Blue Cheer. We also celebrated the first-ever TSORR podcast (No 12, check it out if you haven't heard it) by starting with Jack Hammer and Mr. Midnight. It felt right to follow up with a track I played on the show when Piet Botha passed away in 2019 called Highway To The Sun by Johnathan Martin. We also remembered some other losses that we marked in time on TSORR, Eddie Van Halen in 2020 and Charlie Watts in 2021. With the signal so bad and so many people struggling with the signal the only way I could do this justice was to add another hour to the show. What the hell you only turn 5 once. The last hour was a tribute to some amazing people who have supported the show and just as we were reaching the high point the whole fucking thing ended abruptly with a systems crash that prevented me from saying thanks and goodnight. Such is life, we will have another bash at getting this right next year Artists featured: Sophie Lloyd (feat Nathan James), The Boomtown Rats, Kiss, Judas Priest, Rabbit, Radio Rats, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC. Ozzy Osbourne, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden,, Accept, W.A.S.P., Metallica, Blue Cheer, Rush, Jack Hammer, Johnathan Martin, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Seether, Buckcherry, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, The Clash, The Distillers, Massive Wagons, Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Thin Lizzy, Rose Tattoo, Guns ‘n' Roses, Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Uninvited, The Cruel Sea, Social Distortion, My Chemical Romance, Fokofpolisiekar The Story of Rock and Roll. Episode 47 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on 254 Nov 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. I was worried the wifi wouldn't hold up with the load-shedding, but we made it. The show kicked off with an old TSORR favourite called 'Tres Borrachos' by Left Lane Cruiser. From there we took a listen to the perennial rock classic that is ‘Hair of the Dog. Nevada Beach were up next with a track called ‘Hollywood. Hank Decken is the main man in Nevada Beach, on guitar and vocals. We will be taking a closer look at Hank in weeks to come because there are a lot of unsung heroes in the rock ‘n' roll business and I reckon Hank may be one of them. We checked out two blues giants, Rory Gallagher and Philip Sayce, but listened to less bluesy tracks for a change. Philip may have been a bit mellow for the early stages of the show so we ramped up a gear with Black Spiders and ‘KISS Tried to Kill Me'. Going back to Philip Sayce for a second, make sure you check out the solo at the end, it proves my theory that the songs are just vehicles for solos like this. We changed pace with Black Spiders and a track called ‘KISS tried to kill Me' off their critically acclaimed (by me) album Sons of the North. The new Soilwork is a really good album and we listened to ‘Death, I Hear You Calling'. You may be aware I am a huge fan of Matthew Good Bands' early work so we took a listen to ‘Carmelina' off the Audio of Being album. Brian Fallon's ‘My Name Is the Night' kept things tidy and then we floored it with In Flames and Parkway Drive. From there we moved to an all-time South African classic by No Friends of Harry, you guessed it the one and only ‘Competition Rules'. Wilko Johnson passed away yesterday, as a RIP we played 'Going Back Home' the title track of the album he did with Roger Daltrey back in 2014. Wilko was a founder member of Dr. Feelgood with vocalist Lee Brilleaux. Dr. Feelgood were often cited as a big influence by the UK Punk era bands such as The Jam and The Clash, so we checked out both with ‘Art School' and ‘Drug-Stabbing Time'. Then it was back to the stuff like The White Stripes and The Bottle Rockets. The Bottle Rockets track 'Radar Gun' sent me off on a little tirade about the police in South Africa. We went back to South Africa for a brand new track from the uber-talented Mark Haze and then we checked out some more Diverted Disorder. The boys from the Vaal are doing good things, the album launch is this weekend. From Diverted Disorder we heard The Cars, I shit you not, The Cars on TSORR!. Why? because it's a great song, and that is why. I totally ran out of time, we squeezed in (or is it squoze :-))? Boston, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and a brand new track from Disturbed. We finished off with an eight min plus live epic from Black Label Society called 'Stillborn'. Thanks for listening, comments welcome, catch TSORR on the website or Facebook page. Artists featured: Left Lane Cruiser, Nazareth, Nevada Beach, Rory Gallagher, Philip Sayce, Black Spiders, Soilwork, Tremonti, KISS, Matthew Good Band, Brian Fallon, In Flames, Parkway Drive, No Friends of Harry, ZZ Top, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, The Jam, The Clash, The Cult, The White Stripes, The Bottle Rockets, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Motor Sister, Killit, Mark Haze, Diverted Disorder, The Cars, Bad Company, Boston, Def Leppard, Red Beans & Pepper Sauce, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Disturbed, Black Label Society. Episode 38 kicked off at 19h00 on Thursday 22 Sept 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up Guns ‘n' Roses with ‘You could Be Mine'. from back in the day when G ‘n' R were the hottest band in the world. Next up Rainbow, off Rising and the opening track 'Tarot Woman'. It was pretty much hard rock with bands like Tesla and The Four Horsemen all the way through until some Jethro Tull which made a nice change. The track we heard was 'One Brown Mouse' off Heavy Horses. From there we went bluesy with Samantha Fish and Frank Marino. The requests for more led to Joe Bonamassa with 'Hanging on a Loser' off his latest album Time Clocks. We checked out a real biker, biker band in the form of Chrome Division and then went heavy with Sepultura and their cover of Motörhead's ‘Orgasmatron' with the amazing Derrick Green on vocals. I did screw up a bit, I wasn't sure if Derrick was Brazilian, he isn't, he's American, born in Cleveland in 1971, six foot five weighing 110 kg. That should fix the bungled and botched attempt on the record. The next bit of the show I really enjoyed. Two metal bands I had never heard of one called Sumerlands and another called Claymorean got some airtime. They are playing what is known as classic metal. Claymorean are out of Serbia and Sumerlands I am not sure. We will be hearing more from these band in the future. Tanks to Loudwire for thise two gems. New stuff came from Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, and Desolation Angels. We got our weekly dose of UK Punk courtesy of Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, and The Jam. Because there is so much good metal out there right now we kept on going with a new track from In Flames called The Great Deceiver, this is a huge return to form in my view. There was time to visit the ‘80s with Mõtley Crüe and ‘Girls, Girls, Girls' and then some Kiss off Lick It Up and ‘All Hell's Breaking Loose. Hole and The Pretty Reckless represented the ladies and then it was time once again for Rush. I am currently Rush befok and there is no obvious sign of abatement. It feels like we've had Rush for 7 weeks in a row now. The wheels came off a little bit at the end, some bottled-up anger and a tribute to the Rebels at Rebel Rock Radio who work hard doing what they love whether people listen to it or not. So we went out heavy, heavy with Arch Enemy, Dirty Little Rabbits, and Eye of the Enemy. Artists featured: Guns ‘n' Roses, Rainbow, Slash's Snake Pit, Tesla, The Four Horseman, The L.A. Maybe, Q5, Jethro Tull, Frank Marino, Samantha Fish, Joe Bonamassa, Chrome Division, Sepultura, Manegarm, Claymorean, Sumerlands, Stiff little Fingers, The Clash, the Jam, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, In Flames, Desolation Angels, Hole, The Pretty Reckless, Rush, The Who, Warren Zevon, Faster Pussycat, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, Dirty Little Rabbits, Eye of the Enemy.
Cola looks at the dress and politics of 1970s punk, focusing on the use of swastikas as fashion accessories. We consider the merits of using the Nazi symbol to attack English bourgeois mythology and comment on the commercialization of Nazism during the Hitler Wave of the 1970s. Focusing on the book "England's Dreaming" by Jon Savage, we talk about Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren (and their clothing shop SEX), as well as the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie Sioux, the New York Dolls, and many others.
Episode 36 kicked off with Journey and 'Anyway You Want It', live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 8 Sep 2022. In quick succession, we heard from Mammoth WVH, Edguy and Blackfoot. If any of you caught the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show you will probably have been suitably impressed with Mammoth WVH's Wolfgang Van Halen, the kids got daddy's chops that is for sure. From there we went all military with 'Gods of War' from Bruce Dickinson and 'Military Man' from Gary Moore. While we were on air the news came through that the Queen had died so that led to ZZ Top with 'Have You Heard'? And Status Quo with 'Mystery Song' and then into Tom Petty with a track called ‘Flirting With Time' which is what we are all doing. Tom Morello's cover of Bob Dylan's ‘Blind Willie McTell went down really well, definitely a show highlight there. We also checked out a band I discovered about 14 years ago and I don't think I have played on TSORR, a band called Biomechanical. The new stuff came from Alter Bridge and Ozzy Osbourne. The next bit was great, it was all based around a couple of tracks from the Netflix documentary Trainwreck, Woodstock 99. You need to see it, we took a listen to Limp Bizkit with 'Break Stuff', Korn with ‘Blind' and Kid Rock with ‘Batwitadaba'. There was some good music at the turn of the century that's for sure. From there we cracked a bit of UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers covering The Specials classic ‘Doesn't Make it Alright', some Steve Jones off the Fire & Gasoline album and a cover of Bob Marley's 'Redemption Song' courtesy of Joe Strummer. We went heavy with the title track off the brand new Megadeth album called The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead and then brand new from Parkway Drive and a track called ‘The Greatest Fear'. SA music from The Black Cat Bones and Asylum Kids took us to a lekker messy ending with Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, and the find of the year, a band called The Halo Effect, We took a listen to the opening track 'Shadowminds'. And that ladies and gentlemen was that for season 5 episode 36. Please share the podcasts with anyone who may be interested. Thanks for listening m/ Artists featured: Journey, Mammoth WVH, Edguy, Blackfoot, Bruce Dickinson, Gary Moore, Q5, Slaughter, Sons of Liberty, The Dead Daisies, ZZ Top, Tom Morello & The Nightwatchmen, Status Quo, Tom petty, Biomechanical, Kiss, Ryan Adams, Dio, Alter Bridge, Ozzy Osbourne, (feat Zakk Wylde), Theory of a Deadman Mick Jagger, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock, Stiff Little Fingers, Steve Jones, Joe Strummer, Nazareth, Megadeth, Parkway Drive, Asylum Kids, The Black Cat Bones, The L.A. Maybe, Cradle of Filth, Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, The Halo Effect.
Episode 33 of season 5 aired finally at 19h18 on Rebel Rock Radio. Same as last week I could not connect to the server but this time I found some gremlins in the system and was able to sort it out. We kicked off with Guns ‘n' Roses, with Accept and Herman Frank in hot pursuit. Both those tracks featured Herman because back in 1984 when Restless and Wild was released he was on guitar with Wolf Hoffman. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden signaled the end of the metal for the next 10 minutes. From there we went all over the place, leaving the grunge in Seattle we moved to Ireland for The Boomtown Rats, London for Joe Jackson, then down under for some ACDC and a track called 'Giving the Dog a Bone' off Back in Black. Mutt Lange produced both the ACDC and the Boomtown Rats' The Fine Art of Surfacing. We had new stuff from Hell Fire and a track called 'Tortuga Nights' off the new album called Reckoning. Also new was a track called 'Yen' off the new Slipknot, which is being released one track at a time in the same way as Arch Enemy and Megadeth were. Speaking of both of those we checked them out as well. It was cool to toast the late great Taylor Hawkins and check out a track called ‘Rudy' off his EP Kota. It's got so many hooks it reminds me of Rabbitt. We went mellow with Dire Straits and a track called 'Lions' off the Live at the BBC album and then we went heavy again with a track called ‘Exiled From Earth' off the finally released album called 'Deceivers'. Arch Enemy is my current favorite metal band, Michael Amott and Alissa White-Gluz are killing it. By the end of the show, we had gone from Del Amitri to Parkway Drive and Nickelback to Soulfly. The UK Punk slot was great, and The Stranglers with Duchess really hit the spot. The Rodneys were lining up, god forbid. It was also great to hear Stiff Little Fingers with 'Nobody's' Hero and Simon McBride who is now in Deep Purple in place of Steve Morse made his TSORR debut with a rack called 'High Stakes'. We finished up with Rage Against the Machines cover of Devo's track ‘Beautiful World, Zack De La Roche literally oozes resentment at the end, don't be like Zack kids. All in all, it was a pretty mixed-up affair, in a good way. Artists featured: Guns ‘n' Roses, Accept, Herman Frank, Newsted, Hell Fire, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Boomtown Rats, Joe Jackson, ACDC, Santana, Dave Hause, John Mellencamp, Rush, All them Witches, Megadeth, Slipknot, Taylor Hawkins, Dirty Honey, Simon McBride, Dire Straits, Arch Enemy, Bring Me The Horizon, Nickelback, Hinder, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Mr Big, The Answer, We Are Harlot, Sixx A.M., Del Amitri, Parkway Drive, Soulfly, Rage Against The Machine
Episode 29 of Season 5 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 21 July 2022. I reckon this was one of the coolest starts ever and featured a little clip of Tom Petty telling the audience in Inglewood to clear the aisles. The original idea to have a mellow start was blown to Smithereens by Therapy with ‘Trigger Inside' followed by Scorpions and UFO with ‘Blackout' and Lights Out' respectively. Punches were being swung at the government and all was good. We took a listen to Trivium, Matt Heafy's band and they have really grown on me. This week is based on last week's aborted show but with some super-excellent enhancements. I am in a far better mood. We checked out Tindrum a band that I found on the Phil Wright Tapes, in a continuation of what I call tracks from Tracks From The Grave, we checked out a track called Street Fighter by Tindrum. From there we had Welcome to the Circus, brand new from Five Finger Death Punch. This time last week I was losing my rhythm, resetting streams, and generally pissing the listeners off so it was great to be able to do this show justice. Some of it has changed, mainly the sentiment (happy, grateful) but most of it stayed the same. Blue Öyster Cult hit the spot with a track called ‘Fight', which we must. We then entered the ‘Belly Of The Best' with Sixx A.M., this bit got a bit personal with the current state of things in SA. I experienced an armed robbery last week, 9 guys moved into our factory and took us prisoner, lie on the floor type shit you see in the movies. We managed to outwit them and set off the alarm but it could have ended very badly. The next two songs, Bastards by Machine Head and (Don't let Em) Grind Ya Down by Motörhead summed up the need to fight this shit. We cannot let the bad guys win. Things balanced out with Rival Sons and the stoic sentiments of Good Things and we let the power of great rock music do its work, Bad Company, and Foreigner were good medicine. We had the evolution of female vocals with Sheryl Crow, Lzzy Hale, and Alisa White-Gluz. We sorted out the UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, and US Punk with Fall Out Boy and The Distillers. Brody Dale is such an iconic rock chick, she should do more albums. We ended the show with a lot of SA music and started with Springbok Nude Girls, then Mark Haze, then Nibs Van Der Spuy. People wanted more so we had Valiant Swart and we went out with Johnathan Martin's amazing track 'I Wish You Well'. The highlight of the show for me was the shout-out to Danny De Wet and his awesome book Sex, Drums and Rock n Roll……In Africa. I spent time with Danny last weekend and he managed to get my book into the hands of Lucien Windrich who took TSORR on the plane with him back to the UK after a very successful Johnny Clegg tribute gig. We took a listen to Wonderboom with a cover of eVoids 'Shadows', two bands Danny was an integral part of. Artists featured: Therapy?, Scorpions, UFO, Trivium, Black Label Society, Warrant, Tindrum, Smith/Kotzen, Five Finger Death Punch, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M., Machine Head, Motörhead, Rival Sons, Saxon, Wonderboom, Arapaho, Bad Company, Foreigner, Slade, Mott The Hoople, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Sheryl Crow, Halestorm, Arch Enemy, Upon A Burning Body, Megadeth, Volbeat, Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Fall Out Boy, The Distillers, Springbok Nude Girls, Mark Haze, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Valiant Swart, Johnathan Martin
Episode 23 of season 5 aired on 9 June at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up we had 1000 Homo DJs. Basically, that is Al Jorgenson of Ministry fame with a few buddies, people like Jello Biafra. From there we had a 'Poisoned heart' by Black Star Riders. Classic rock from Def Leppard, Krokus, Journey, and Whitesnake off the Love Hunter album moved us along nicely. Korn took us into the 2000s and we stayed there with 21st-century bands The Temperance Movement and a solo album by ex-Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell. Jaques called in to ask if there were any drums so we took a listen to Doro Pesch and Warlock with a track called 'Hellbound'. We celebrated the Queen's platinum (70th) Jubilee with 'God Save the Queen', the track that cemented the Sex Pistol's reputation as foul-mouthed yobs. Staying in 1977 we checked out The Clash with 'Hate and War' and UK Punk heavyweights The Stranglers with a track off 1978's Black and White called 5 Minutes. The highlight for me was playing a song that is very special to me by a South African band called Count Ash. Featuring guitar god Joe da Silva, Count Ash were resident at the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville in the early '90s. I spent many Friday nights there in the company of fellow Sleaze Patrollers Marq Vas, Dave Lee Owen, and Stu Hollendrake. Thanks to Vas who has the largest collection of SA music in the world (check out Mark Vas's South African Music Collectibles) I managed to get an MP3 copy of the track 'Holding On' which I rediscovered on my Phil Wright Tapes last week. It was amazing to hear it again. It made sense to keep those memorable days flowing with another track by The Diamond Dogs, they have been getting a lot of airplay lately thanks to Rebel Rock's Tinus Nel, who gave me some recordings that he helped fund many years ago. I sort of lost control of the show for a while but we did chat briefly about Rodriguez, and Johnny Depp and we got to hear 'The Economic Theory of Jesus' by The Uninvited for the first time ever on TSORR. Artists featured: 1000 Homo DJs, Black Star Riders, Def Leppard, Dangerous Toys, Whitesnake, Krokus, Journey, Metallica, Korn, Thunder, The Temperance Movement, Thin Lizzy, Phil Campbell, Warlock, W.A.S.P., Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, the Clash, Butchering The Beatles, Hollywood Vampires, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Rodriguez, Kid Rock, Children of Bodom, System of a Down, Sabaton, Stone Sour, Vixen, The Rolling Stones, Count Ash, The Diamond Dogs, The Uninvited, Johnathan Martin, Buckcherry, Skid Row, Slash's Snakepit, Sixx AM, The Distillers, Ozzy Osbourne.
Episode 22 nearly didn't happen, it became episode 23 for some reason. It looks like the time travel theme that signals the start of every show moved me ahead a week. Fortunately, I was able to change all the S5E23s to the correct S5E22 before everything got uploaded and created an irreversible hole in time. The show kicked off with The Doors and 'L.A. Woman' and it was like cool running water, Jim Morrison giving us a glimpse once again of what could have been if he was still around today. From a chilled laid back nearly 8 minute intro, we smashed a little Volbeat action and moved through Phil X and The Drills, Skid Row, and something off the new Ghost album Impera. We made a bit of a fuss about Johnny Depp and celebrated his vindication by the courts this week by playing his band Hollywood Vampires and a track called 'Who's Laughing Now'. We washed that down with some Jeff Beck jamming with ZZ Top on 'Rough Boy'. We had Classic Rock came from Black Sabbath, ACDC, and Led Zeppelin, prog type stuff from Threshold and Coheed & Cambria, and Metal from Sepultura, Death Angel, and Opeth. The SA music was well represented by The Devil's Party Band, The Diamond Dogs, and Hellcats. Tom Petty and John Mellencamp mellowed the show out a bit, I tried to revive it with some UK Punk, courtesy of The Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers but ultimately the show moved back to a chilled ending with a fantastic love song about a guitar off the brand new Def Leppard album Diamond Star Halos. Anyone who has played a guitar their whole life will fully understand the sentiment and the mini solos. The show was dedicated to Athol's son Phoenix who turned 25 and celebrated by listening to The Story of Rock and Roll as one should. Artists featured: The Doors, Volbeat, Phil X and The Drills, Ghost, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Coverdale / Page, Zakk Wylde, Tesla, Threshold, Coheed & Cambria, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Dangerous Toys, Hollywood Vampires, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Suicidal Tendencies, Doom Squad, Opeth, Sepultura, Death Angel, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, The Diamond Dogs, Hellcats, The Devil's Party Band, The Pretty Reckless, Lita Ford, L7, Seether, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Def Leppard, U2.

Their drummer is a stand up guy, the songs are about their day to day experiences AND they recently opened up for Half Man Half Biscuit.Tom and the main man Mike share a horrific karaoke injury experience, we find out what happens when you block a nun, we get nostalgic right off the bat and discuss the planning and execution of the band's very own festival, Crapfest!Tom reports back on his first Stamford/Mama Liz's/Scary Clown experience, Niall's done his homework and has some musings on Cocksparrer's hit record "shock troops" and we check out where our roving reporter Mark L Williamson has been in our final (sad face emoji) MLPP World Service.Songs to get your laughing gear around are from: Party Boss, The Fuckin' Glorious, Against Me!, The Meffs, Carburetor Dung and Dropkick Murphys.

2003's "tribute" to Ramones "We're A Happy Family" falls victim to the fat lads this week, as we're joined by Dickkie Shackleford to assess the last ditch money spinner. What will you hate more? the whispering Irishman? The wobbly-voiced Vedder? Maybe it'll be the king of clubland Pete Yorn. The big guns are out wrecking Ramones tracks as we slag everyone from U2 to Maz Manson. Some unlikely contributions get some high praise though! As well as all that, we hear about a scandal involving stealing the booze from an 80s pop group, the ultimate party popper prank and inappropriate masks.
Episode 10, so we are 20% of the way through Season 5 and 2022. The show aired on 10 Mar 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. It kicked off with what could possibly be one of the greatest show starting songs ever written, a track called 'Invincible', brand new from Eddie Vedder off his Earthling album. It has an incredibly uplifting feel. If I were a movie director I would be pulling it into my movie damn quick. Anyway, that was the start and we followed up with an ode to the post-covid economy in the wake of the Ukrainian disaster called 'All Revved Up With No Place to Go' courtesy of Meatloaf. From there we meandered through some early Queen to two great albums, Sixteen Stone. and Throwing Copper, both released in 1994, by Bush and Live respectively. A highlight was taking in a 60 min blast of energy from Arch Enemy. The track is titled 'The Leader' (Of the Fucking Assholes) and was originally written by a band called Shitlickers out of Gothenburg in the '82 - '84 era. I dedicated it to those who send troops into neighboring countries to kill civilians to fulfill their own worldview. Rory Gallagher and Joe Bonamassa took care of the blues. The Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers did the same for UK Punk. The SA stuff was handled by Blue Scream and The Burning and towards the end of the show Piet Botha with 'Van Tonder'. The Blue Scream track is special as it features Roger Kaye who passed away in 2013 and was one of the finest musicians I ever met. Roger was at school with me and had a huge influence on my musical journey. You can find out more about him in my book The Story of Rock and Roll which is available on Amazon Kindle and in hard copy. In order to build Roger's legacy, I post any episode of TSORR featuring him to the Roger Kaye Facebook community. We went heavy with Parkway Drive and Arch Enemy and then had a lekker mellow ending which was a bit different and pretty cool. Hope you enjoy it, catch you next episode. PS. For the record, I made a comment that although my German is non-existant I figured that I was pretty certain that Rammstein's 'Fruhling in Paris' meant woman or lady in Paris. Once again certainty is the enemy it means Spring in Paris Artists featured: Eddie Vedder, Meatloaf, Queen, Bush, Live, Kane Roberts, Disturbed, Mastodon, In This Moment, Sons of Liberty, L.A. Guns, Massive Wagons, Arch Enemy, Rammstein, Scorpions, Stone Sour, Rory Gallagher, Joe Bonamassa, Motörhead, Led Zeppelin, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Billy Bragg, Josh Todd & The Conflict, Sammy Hagar & The Wabo's, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Blue Scream, The Burning, Van Halen, Parkway Drive, Arch Enemy, Neil Young, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Piet Botha. The Edgar Broughton Band, The Killers

Episode 7 of Season 5 aired on 17 February 2022. We kicked off with a track called 'Bulletproof' of Paul Stanley's second solo album titled Live To Win. It was topical given the difficult times we are living in, it seems like everyone is going through some serious shit. We added a bit more inspiration to the airwaves with Billy Squiers' track 'Stronger' off Here and Now. It was a fairly quiet night by TSORR standards not a lot of people calling in so the show sort of had a life of its own. Cold Chisel's cover of 'Knocking on Heavens Door' showed once again just what a great live band they were. Ian Moss's guitar work as always just shines. Speaking of guitar work, there was plenty of it, Black Label Society, Exodus, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden all showcasing some of the greatest guitarists around. For a bit of UK Punk, we called on Sex Pistols with 'Did U No Wrong' and Stiff Little Fingers with 'Wait and See'. The latter perfectly demonstrates the wonderful ability of Jake Burns to shift quickly into 'really aggressive now' mode.Local music was ably handled by Roland Suttie, Johnathan Martin, and a seriously powerful track from Code 106 of a new EP called Alium. Code 106 are sounded really good on this, I was suitably impressed. From there we went on a Southern Rock jag for a few tracks, Kid Rock, Lynryd Skynyrd, and Whisky Myers all delivering the goods. 'Fill My World' the sad tale of Myles Kennedy's little dog Mozart alone in a storm and Sixx A.M. with 'Maybe It's Time' gave us a good 10 min of emotional stuff and it was tempting to mine that vein further, instead I opted for a mood-lifting end of show blitz of high octane 3 min tracks from The Offspring, The Distillers and Joan Jett (with her Blackhearts of course). We closed out with UK Metal stalwarts Desolation Angels and a sublime track from Piet Botha. Hope you enjoy it. Artists featured: Paul Stanley, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Billy Squier, Anthrax, Manowar, Black label Society, Rose Tattoo, Cold Chisel, Powderfinger, MC5, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Exodus, Rage Against the Machine, Code 106, Johnathan Martin, Roland Suttie, Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey Myers, The Black Crowes, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Motörhead, Slash (feat Myles Kennedy), Sixx A.M., Kreator, Warrior Soul, The Offspring, The Distillers, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Desolation Angels, Piet Botha
The Suicide Notes ooze gutter-trash rock n' roll. Low-slung buzzsaw guitars and raw nicotine-soaked vocals, rock 'n' roll swagger, and whiskey on the rocks; the illegitimate sons of punk and sleaze, conceived on a bed of red wine, cigarettes, and back alley attitude. Born under the bad sign of guttercat rock n' roll in 2019, the band swiftly secured management and a sponsorship deal with Cloven Hoof Rum before launching two acoustic singles - which have had continuous radio play since their release in July 2019. These were soon followed up with a third well received single 'Momma Sang The Blues' and the release of their debut acoustic and electric 'Pleasures Of Despair' EPs. These gained rave reviews across the board and the band were No.1 on Only Rock Radio in Spain, and No. 16 across all stations on the Radio Indie Alliance Top 40. The gig calendar for 2020 was all-but wiped out by the Covid 19 pandemic, but not before the band had garnered stellar reviews for their debut gig at London's Hope & Anchor, and for performances at the Dublin Castle, Camden's Unicorn, and Dementia Aware Fest in Wolverhampton. Securing a new management deal with Forge A.M.P and adding the extra sonic assault of second guitarist Danny Gould, the Suicide Notes were widely acknowledged as one of the Day 1 highlights of the rescheduled HRH Sleaze 2021, along with a number of festival appearances, support slots with Last Great Dreamers, Healthy Junkies ans a bunch of headline shows. 2022 sees a return to Hard Rock Hell with a headline appearance at HRH AOR, a support slot with ‘Greatest Rock n' Roll Band In The World' Supersuckers, and festival appearances at RoadRage, CC7 XIII Shades of Black, Mayors Fest, and a third Punk n' Roll Rendezvous, plus a return to multiple Dementia Fest 2021 events. Royals New Single "Worldwide Catastrophe" Out Now Pop Punk hailing from Southampton, UK "'Top 10 Rising UK Pop Punk Bands"- Alternative Press Stream The Single On All Digital Platforms. Stream Royals' New Single "Worldwide Catastrophe" on all streaming platforms here: https://fanlink.to/royals-wwc . Watch the music video here: https://youtu.be/W8TVNaf-DlM. Vocalist Luke Smithson says, ""Worldwide Catastrophe is intended to put across a message about how we live in a world full of selfishness, greed & hate amongst other awful things. I believe our generation can be the voice to make changes to these things and help make the world a better place. This is the message I wanted to get across lyrically when writing this song. Since our last release we have developed as a band on so many levels and this song is a prime example of what you can expect from Royals in the near future." Royals are a five-piece pop-punk based out of Southampton, UK. Formed in 2019, the band got off to a quick start releasing several singles and music videos followed by their debut EP ‘Painted Gold'. The band began to build a decent following in their hometown and online which was aided by the release of their cover of Taylor Swift's ‘Me!'. The band headed into the studio in late 2019 with Neck Deep's Seb Barlow to record a line of singles in 2020. The first of those singles was 'Out Of Reach' which was released to an amazing reception. The song was featured in Spotify's 'New Punk Tracks' playlist and added to Idobi Radio's rotation. Their latest single 'Fair-Weather Friend' was also featured on Spotify's 'New Punk Tracks' playlist as well as 'Pop Punk's Not Dead' and it also earned them a place on Alt Press' 'Top 10 Rising UK Pop Punk Bands' list. "Putting the “pop” in pop punk, Royals are dosing the genre with an extra shot of energy. Seriously, we challenge you to stream any of their upbeat, catchy tracks without compulsively bopping along. The band released their latest single,'“Fair-Weather Friend' this past June, and it's essential for any modern pop-punk playlist." - Alt Press www.royalsofficial.com www.facebook.com/RoyalsOfficialUK www.instagram.com/royalsofficialuk https://twitter.com/royalsbanduk This episode is proudly brought to you by: #Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off #Coldest Water Bottle: Use code "10DEREK" for 10% off https://thecoldestwater.com/ #LootCrate : http://loot.cr/3rWoAnw Code "Suckitpodcast" for 15% off BUY MERCH!!!!! #Merch Store: https://www.dckproductions.com/shop Follow me: https://www.instagram.com/suckitpodcast https://www.facebook.com/suckitpodcast https://www.twitter.com/suckit_podcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support
Brighton, UK punk rock powerhouse HARKER are back with a new single "The Beast Must Die." Harker - "The Beast Must Die" (Official Music Video) https://youtu.be/5PlPvF_7uOk The track appears on the band's upcoming LP "Axiom" out April 23rd on Wiretap Records, Disconnect Disconnect Records, Shield Recordings, Fixing A Whole Records. "The Beast Must Die' is based on the idea of 'Mono-consciousness' by English writer Colin Wilson – as a philosopher, Wilsons writing was heavily focused on striving to live with a heightened sense of meaning and avoiding a closed mindset. This track is a study of characters with a lack of empathy and spirituality, in the end leading to apathy for existence. 'Mono-consciousness' is a beast that lurks inside, and needs to be hunted before it takes control of of us."- Mark Boniface (singer/guitarist) What others have said about Harker: "...the first great punk record of 2018.."- Alreadyheard It's a punk thriller. Harker are gifted. Their music highlights punk at its best. Their honest heart-pullers are beautiful."- Punkanormal Activity "Reminded me of some of the early 1990s punk from the likes of Husker Du and The Meat Puppets..."- Punk Online "Don't sleep on this album; you're unlikely to find a UK punk album that hits this hard for a while now."- The Soundboard Reviews "...infectious pop-punk tunes with teeth."- ThePunkSite "we get a real Seaway meets Jimmy Eat World vibe, and that's one gnarly combo" - MOSH "a full fleshed-out ruckus punk rock assault" - Already Heard Harker: Mark Boniface– guitar & vocals Phoebe Saunders - bass & vocals Tony Ware - guitar Matt Claxton - drums Harker online: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRKRUK/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/HRKRUK Web: http://www.hrkr.co.uk/ This episode is proudly brought to you by: #Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off #LootCrate : http://loot.cr/3rWoAnw Code "Suckitpodcast" for 15% off #CBD #Wildflowerhemp https://wildflowerhempco.com/ BUY MERCH!!!!! #Merch Store: https://www.dckproductions.com/shop Follow me: https://www.instagram.com/suckitpodcast https://www.facebook.com/suckitpodcast https://www.twitter.com/suckit_podcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support
