Jenna and Jenelle LOVE talking about all the shit you don't want to tell anyone else. So whether you're a mom, dad, caregiver, human adult, we're here to talk about all the mess.
Speaking of “shit we're not supposed to talk about”, this week, Jenelle bares all aspects of her plastic surgery journey. She pre-recorded half the episode and then come back to explain the REAL truth behind surgery, recovery and the stigma around enhancement procedures. Jenna will pepper her with questions, as usual, and both hosts will discuss the benefits of lymphatic massage. Plus, all your neighbors are getting procedures, they're just not talking about it openly, so let's blow the lid of this “taboo topic. TW: Self-harm mentioned at 38 minutes. In this episode, Jenna and Jenelle discuss the TikTok that went viral, about a piece posted on http://thecut.com (thecut.com) entitled, “Epiphany in the Baby-Food Aisle: On a trip to the grocery store one day, I had a realization about me, my son, and the meaning of life." By https://www.thecut.com/author/jessi-klein/ (Jessi Klein) The hosts dive into the many ways motherhood “annihilates us” and how we all do our best to cope. Oooh hot topic alert! Bullying is very prevalent in today's society, but is it TRULY bullying or is it teasing? Listen in to learn the difference and what to do if your child is experiencing either situation. TW: Eating disorders and child death imagery discussed. Jenna and Jenelle catch you up on, surmise, their current favorite workouts, before diving into a Mental Health Month topic. Anxiety produces intrusive and/or ruminating thoughts in people with the condition, but Jenna will explain other disorders than can produce the symptoms described in this episode. Also they will touch on some of their lowest lows with intrusive and ruminating thoughts (perinatal and postpartum anyone?), as well as what they have found helps in their never ending quest to be the best, mentally-ill humans they can be. This week, Jenna and Jenelle tackle the ever changing economic landscape and whether or not that still fits with the traditional 4 year college experience. Jenna and Jenelle are admittedly “college apathetic” but will bring some discussion points to the table for both sides of the debate. Is college going to relevant for “Generation Alpha” and what college alternatives are currently being offered as well as what is to come. It's the one year anniversary party! This week, Jenna and Jenelle decided to shake things up a bit and asked you for some of you best, most awkward dating stories. Enjoy all the cringe with none of the personal experience and ever-lasting trauma of having to live through these awkward dates. All true stories. Mostly listeners and friends of the show.
Hot topic alert! On this episode Jenna and Jenelle discuss the cons (AND pros) of screen time. Screen time is such a popular topic in today's world and the ladies try to cover all the bases of this topic. They also give tips for how to include more screens in a healthy way, as well as how to screen detox for anyone interested in that wild adventure (we do it all the time, so we're basically experts… JK no parent is an expert on anything, TBH). Jenna is much more limited with screens than Jenelle, but Jenelle is still considered a “limited screen” family. But both your favorite hosts have had wildly different views and practices throughout their mom-ventures. TW: Miscarriage discussed at 14:48 In this week's installment of “the shit we're not supposed to talk about”, Jenna and Jenelle tackle the tricky topic of why women are so quick to talk badly about each other. Why does it feel ingrained in our DNA to put down other women for having things we want or for being more successful than us? Is it hardwired, or is it this face-paced social media world we all live in? Join the hosts as they discuss why YOU might be critical of someone else, what it means when someone is critical of you, and whether someone else's opinion of you ever REALLY matters. Yes, that includes BOSSES. And also, the paradox of “being great at something” and what that really means? Are you really THAT great, or do you just possess something one small fraction of society finds valuable? Join us on another wild ride, exploring why women criticize other women, this week on Done Playing By the Rules. https://goop.com/wellness/career-money/why-women-criticize-each-other-plus-ways-to-play-bigger/ (https://goop.com/wellness/career-money/why-women-criticize-each-other-plus-ways-to-play-bigger/)
Have you ever been faced with the difficult situation of talking to kids about death and/or grief? In this episode, Jenna and Jenelle cover this heavy and uncomfortable (yet important) topic. While they are not certified experts (IN LITERALLY ANYTHING), they do have a ton of (unfortunate) first-hand experience in discussing death and grief with young children. The ladies give tips from personal experience, as well as from well-researched articles. While this topic is heavy and something most of us don't like to think about, the ladies do try to keep it light. Maybe they'll even toss in some inappropriate jokes? Who knows! Tune in this week to learn how to talk with kids about death because, unfortunately, we will all have to face it, sooner or later. This week, Jenelle shares the journey to her recent ADHD diagnosis. Jenelle had suspicions for the last year and half, that ADHD could be a contributing factor to her mental health struggles, but didn't go through with a perusing a diagnosis until 2 months ago. ADHD diagnoses are becoming increasingly common in 30-40 year olds, as we start digging into our issues in therapy and addressing things that we don't want to pass on to our kids. And on that same topic, did you know ADHD runs in families? Because Jenelle did NOT. As usual, Jenna will pepper Jenelle with questions, and there will be humor and plenty of cussing. Enjoy! This episode is a different but important one. Jenna and Jenelle discuss their family safety plans and what they have in place to keep their families safe as well as where they need to improve. Listen in this week to hear the ladies discuss what they call "mini spirals" versus "mega spirals". They give personal experience as well as discuss when to seek help.
This episode, Jenna and Jenelle dive into the comparision game that is as old as time. Cave men probably compared who had the best cave, and today we compare who went on the most grandious vacation or who has the most coordinated holiday card. But if when we break it down, it's all a bit of facade, isn't it? No one's life is perfect. Not a single one of us has every physical and mental feature we desire. And social media is just a bit old magnifying glass that makes your life feel subpar. Jenelle feels inferior to moms with more kids and working moms and Jenna feels she can't live up to her mom's legacy. https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/learned-stop-comparing (https://www.healthline.com/health/mental-health/learned-stop-comparing) https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/prescriptions-life/201803/how-stop-comparing-yourself-others (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/prescriptions-life/201803/how-stop-comparing-yourself-others) Glennon Doyle IG post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CZBDsIrLvir/?utm_medium=copy_link (https://www.instagram.com/p/CZBDsIrLvir/?utm_medium=copy_link)
The long requested introvert/extrovert episode is finally here! While it is long recognized that this is a spectrum situation, most people tend to lean one way or another. Jenelle fully leans extrovert and Jenna lands more into introvert territory. But their friendship works because they see the value in each others unique strengths (and weaknesses). But many introverts feel very misunderstood by their friends (especially within female friendships, which can often be much more emotionally taxing than other friendships). They will also talk about “Spoon Theory”, “Hermit Mode”, and “emotional hangovers'. http://Introvertdear.com (Introvertdear.com) Spoon Theory: http://ButYouDontLookSick.com (ButYouDontLookSick.com) “I'm a Spoon” by Kirsten Schultz: https://www.healthline.com/health/spoon-theory-chronic-illness-explained-like-never-before#1
Numbing of emotions is something every single one of us does or has done at some point in our lives, but it's pretty unglamorous to talk about openly. Luckily, that's what Jenna and Jenelle specialize in. This episode, they get super vulnerable and honest while discussing the numerous coping mechanisms they (and many others) use to dull the emotions we feel every day, and the toll “emotional shoving-down” can take on both mind and body. Whether it's online shopping or lashing out at partners, we all have developed ways to squash down uncomfortable emotions, and our brains are designed to seek constant comfort and joy, so it's not ALL our fault. But how we learn from and grow from numbing our emotions IS in our control. And it's going to take some practice, so buckle up. This week, Jenna and Jenelle attempt to tackle the tough topic of raising grateful kids. Parents often assume their kids should just be grateful for all the opportunity and privilege they have but gratitude is a learned experience and is actually very unnatural to small children. They can't be expected to jump for joy at every sweater Grandma gives them for Christmas. In fact, they are more likely to be over-stimulated at holidays and have a much less desirable reaction. So how do we turn these “greedy little animals” into appreciative, generous, empathetic beings? Who knows, but Jenna and Jenelle have some jumping off points to help get you started. Jenna will dive into her nightly gratitude ritual, and how she mindfully eats in order to feel more grateful regularly. Jenelle will realize she spends approximately zero minutes being mindful or grateful per day. Which side do you fall on? And do you think it trickles down to your kids? @drbeckyatgoodinside
We've all been there. The holidays are supposed to be a cheerful and joyous time yet we feel completely drained. This week, Jenna and Jenelle share their top tips on how to avoid holiday burnout. After experiencing burnout themselves and struggling with the stress that holiday expectations place on adults, the ladies are on a journey to try and embrace a slower, simpler holiday season. If that's not your cup of tea and you love a huge and extravagant holiday season, they are all about that too! You do you and embrace what makes YOU happy this season.
Have you ever posted a picture to your sparkling IG page of everyone crying right after you lost your mind on your partner and kids? Nope? Why not? Because this is a part of the parenting struggle that we avoid talking about at all costs. Yet, all evidence points to the fact that every single mom has experienced ‘mom rage', at least once. And for Jenna and Jenelle, that number is way more than once. This week they open up about how prevalent “mom rage” is, how it's increased ten-fold during this unprecedented parenting time (referred to as “pandemic parenting” by experts) and when to know if you need to get help. Occasional blow ups are normal we just don't talk about them with our friends. But that's exactly what we DO talk about on this episode. This is a classic “shit you're not supposed to talk about” conversation. Welcome to two very different takes on an emotionally charged topic: fidelity. This week, Jenna and Jenelle talk going through partners' phones, how your family of origin affects your attachment and trust style, and why we both have such different feelings on fidelity and monogamy. Jenna and Jenelle also get in a debate about how to pronounce the name “Esther” and in case you were wondering, in THIS incident, Jenelle might be right. But Esther Perel is a hugely popular author and speaker regarding all aspects of marriage and infidelity and this is a very interesting jumping off point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmiKAoAmYSg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmiKAoAmYSg) Jenna rounds out the episode by asking Jenelle if she's ever cheated (and Jenelle forgets to ask Jenna the same question). Jenna also tells the story of the time she went her “neighborhood swingers club” with her mom. They really are covering it ALL this week, people! This week, Jenna and Jenelle only get slightly sidetracked with their ramblings for the first 8 minutes, but stick it out, because this topic is another “real-time experiment” with our kids. Does making an effort to say “yes” more often result in happier, more secure, and more self-sufficient kids? Early research points to the answer being yes. They'll also challenge you (and themselves) to think of a “yes moment”, where you say “yes” to something you might normally say no to. Also, have you tried saying “no, because…” and if you don't have good “because”, maybe it's not a real no? All this and more, on this week's adventurous episode.
This time around, Jenna and Jenelle completely veer off course and decide to just spend the whole show talking about their favorite podcasts (mostly true crime but plenty of random stuff mixed in). They also ramble on about their earliest true crime memories, the TV shows that shaped their obsessions (shout out to family dinners in front of the TV with COPS blaring), and how Jenna claims she watched a “kid's version of X-files”. Jenelle discusses the Jacob Wetterling case and Jenna reflects on the abductions of Amber Hagerman and Opal Jennings. We wrap it up with some more ramblings and then our favorite sleep podcasts, for the grown ups and the babies. **At the time of recoding, Gabby Petito was still a missing person and Jenna and Jenelle were staying up all night reading every news update. While the story is still unfolding at the time of releasing this episode, Gabby's remains have been found and our prayers and thoughts are with her family as well as with the families of the other Wildflower/Moab murder victims. Have you ever said “Oh, I wish I could do that!”? Well, let's see if you can actually do it! Jenna will give out practical tips for changing the trajectory of your life, whether that's a new job or picking (or skipping) a life partner. Are people around you placing expectations on you to follow a certain path that doesn't feel right to you in your gut? Or have you ever considered picking up and starting your life in a new part of the country? Jenna and Jenelle will tell you how (at the 45 minute mark) and more. And if you're not sold on taking action now, listen to the very beautiful end of this one, because you know that old cliche about life being short? Well it's TRUE. This episode focuses on life plans, taking risks and carving your own path. We get questions from younger friends (and same aged peers) all the time about how we made our dreams come true. And while no one's life is perfect, most certainly not ours, we have crafted some pretty wild lives that we happen to love. So when people ask us “how do I do X? It will disappoint (parent, friend, etc)”, we show you the way to make it happen. It won't be easy but nothing worth anything ever is. Come take control of your life and take some risks with us. We promise, it won't be boring! This week Jenna and Jenelle are thrilled to get to pick Whitney Crouch's brain for 45 minutes. Whitney is a no BS registered dietician helping women address the root-causes of thyroid issues so they can reclaim their energy and resilience. She will walk us through the basics of what the thyroid is and does and then dig deeper into what you should be looking for if you think “something is off”. She also gives us practical advice on what tests to ask your GP to run and what to do if you doctor is hesitant to fully dig into your concerns. Trigger warning: Miscarriage briefly discussed at the 18:20 mark Whitney's IG is a wealth of information: @whitneyc.the.rd Whitney's 9/9/21 workshop sign up is LIVE now and can be found in her IG profile.
Listen to this fun episode to hear Jenna and Jenelle talk about parenting "failures". Are you tired of people asking you "When is your child going to (fill in the blank)?" or "Why can't your child (blank) yet"? Well we certainly are and we rant about our biggest society constructed "failures" and how we have started to follow our kid's lead and let many standards and benchmarks go to the wayside. Please join us in spending an hour with one of our favorite people we have met this year. Jenelle was introduced to Twylla by a mutual hairstylist/friend, and it was an immediate connection. Then Jenna became obsessed with Twylla's tik-tik (she boasts 50k+ followers with millions of views). Twylla is also an owner-operator of the most magical, authentic, inclusive salon and her team shows that she truly practices what she preaches, which is: be you and the very best version of you, no matter what that looks like. Jenelle is a “recovering people pleaser” (tune in about minute 24 if this is you) and Twylla won't tip-toe around asking “why are you like that?” (Her patent-pending signature phrase). Do you apologize too often, or for no reason, like standing unintentionally in someone's path? Why do we feel the need to people-please even at the expense of our own physical and mental well-being? Why do we value “work-aholism”? Why are we not all being 100% authentic to ourselves every day? Why do we stay in ruts that leave us exhausted, unhappy and unhealthy? Twylla doesn't have all the answers, but she will challenge us all to start the journey of exploration. So buckle up! We will also touch on the dark underbelly of social media influencers, who can buy followers and seemingly give medical advice with no medical background. IG: @twyllajane TikTok: @twyllajane
This week Jenna and Jenelle wander into “purity culture”, which seemingly sky-rocketed to pop culture center stage in the early 2000's. However, it has actually been a cornerstone of many faiths (most prominently, Evangelical Christians) for much longer. It is a topic we find ourselves frequently touching on as adult women and questioning as moms of small kids. How will WE teach our kids body autonomy, consent, body positivity and sex positive outlooks?Jenna and Jenelle grew up in religious or semi-religious households and both spent time in private schools, so they have some hot takes on how they want to raise their babies differently then they were raised, to put it mildly. **Trigger warning: sexual assault is discussed (vaguely) Jenelle ordered this book and she feels it's going to be super helpful: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L2L5DK9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08L2L5DK9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) C is for Consent book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0999890808/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0999890808/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1) EDMR book that is referenced in the opening chaos: -EMDR: The Breakthrough Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma Sources: https://lindakayklein.com/what-is-purity-culture/ (https://lindakayklein.com/what-is-purity-culture/) https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/article/mutuality-blog-magazine/7-lies-purity-culture-teaches-women (https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/article/mutuality-blog-magazine/7-lies-purity-culture-teaches-women) https://unewsonline.com/2021/04/what-is-purity-culture-and-why-it-is-extremely-damaging-to-young-girls-and-women/ (https://unewsonline.com/2021/04/what-is-purity-culture-and-why-it-is-extremely-damaging-to-young-girls-and-women/) https://www.onewomanproject.org/blog/2021/5/10/breaking-up-with-purity-culture (https://www.onewomanproject.org/blog/2021/5/10/breaking-up-with-purity-culture) https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/06/us/abstinence-pledge-evangelicals.html (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/06/us/abstinence-pledge-evangelicals.html) http://www.femcatholic.com/feminist-chastity-problems-with-purity-culture-part-1/ (http://www.femcatholic.com/feminist-chastity-problems-with-purity-culture-part-1/) https://religionnews.com/2021/03/18/atlanta-suspect-punished-women-for-tempting-him-he-likely-learned-that-at-church/ (https://religionnews.com/2021/03/18/atlanta-suspect-punished-women-for-tempting-him-he-likely-learned-that-at-church/) IG: @tova_leigh Jenelle's book about consent (fiction but still very thought provoking):https://www.amazon.com/Night-Swim-Novel-Megan-Goldin/dp/125021968X/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+night+swim&qid=1626734482&sr=8-1 (https://www.amazon.com/Night-Swim-Novel-Megan-Goldin/dp/125021968X/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+night+swim&qid=1626734482&sr=8-1) Resource for talking about bodies, sex and all the things. This episode will revolve around Jacquelyn's breast cancer journey. Jacquelyn was a healthy, active, 35 year old mom of two young boys, with no history of breast cancer in her family and was diagnosed with Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) after discovering a large lump during a self-exam. Jacquelyn bravely and openly discusses the scary moments from that first lump in the shower to the diagnosis and subsequent surgeries and chemotherapy. You can always cancel if you don't need it. Find your people. Whether that be online or in a support group. Find others with your diagnosis that can understand what you're going through. Now is as good of a time as any to find a therapist. Jacquelyn's tips to support someone recently diagnosed: Reach out- ALWAYS reach out even if it has been years since you last talked. Send gift cards for restaurants, groceries or food delivery service. This is especially helpful if the family has dietary restrictions. Send practical gifts. This week, Jenna and Jenelle dive in (in real time) to “mean mom culture”. Jenelle is real feisty and has had too much iced coffee prior to recording so she goes in hard on mean moms and the example they're setting for their kids. The ladies also discuss bullying while growing up, introvert and extrovert moms and why you should be an even better friend coming out of the pandemic than before.
