Dielle Charon has cracked the code. This business coach earned more than a million dollars in 2022 and $370K in the first 2 months of 2023. She says one of the reasons for this success is her focus on delivering quality programmes and buttoning up her business processes. But it took a lot of mindset work to give up chasing the glamour of internet fame and social media celebrity. In this episode, Dielle shares how her biggest mistake early on in her coaching business was comparing herself to other business coaches on social media and spending too much time trying to become popular online. Have you ever shied away from the spotlight, thinking that it might help your business rather than hurt it? Black women and visibly Muslim women have to decide how they want to show up for their businesses — all while navigating the complex expectations and stereotypes that come along with their identities. My guest is Jennifer Ogunyemi, the founder of Sisters in Business, the largest organization in the UK dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and elevating Muslim women in business. Jennifer serves as a mentor to countless Muslim women. But before her business took off, she struggled with how to show up visibly in her business. In fact, while her business was taking off, no one knew that a Black woman was behind it. That led her to miss out on opportunities and affirmation as a business owner. Now, she encourages Muslim women to show up for themselves. Find the transcript of this episode on my site, emancopyco.com/podcast. Have you ever had a brilliant business idea, then watched someone else take that idea and run with it because you took too long to make it happen? My guest is Belinda Weaver, the owner of Copywrite Matters and a copy coach in the copywriting industry.Belinda created the concept for a membership community that would scale her business…and then...she sat on it (mostly because she was juggling two young kids). While she waited for the perfect time to launch, other copywriters jumped on the same idea, created their own membership, and grew them into successful businesses.Going at a pace that felt slower than everyone around her made Belinda rethink her work-life balance, the speed at which she's growing her business, and her relationship between motherhood and being a business owner.Find the transcript of this episode on my site, emancopyco.com/podcast.Links from this episode:Join Like a Boss, my 12-week mastermind for copywritersBelinda WeaverHot Copy podcastGet The Email Rules: Eman's FREE 35-minute email classIf you loved this episode, take a screenshot, post it on Instagram and tell everyone you know that this is the podcast to listen to. When Steve Folland's *only* client let him go, he'd just quit his full-time job to go all in on his audio and video editing business. Being jobless and clientless couldn't have come at a worse time. Steve's wife had just gone on maternity leave and they had a brand new (4-month-old) baby – plus an older child too! In this conversation, Steve – also the host of the ‘Being Freelance' podcast – shares his entrepreneurial journey, how he diversified his skills and services, and what he learned from his biggest business mistake. Self-made millionaire Jordan Gill opens up about her biggest mistake — overhiring for her coaching programme. Jordan tells us how overhiring meant she had to lay off the majority of her employees, how it caused clients to call her reputation into question, and how it led to her shutting down her Done in a Day programme – a programme that brought in 90% of her company's revenue. Laura Belgray has made millions by being herself and writing some of the best story-based marketing emails. She's the founder of Talking Shrimp, a copywriting service, and is known for helping people find the words and courage to make their business an expression of their personality. And I'm a HUGE fangirl (There - I said it! Ha!) In this episode, we talk about how Laura made the mistake of ghosting her email subscribers for months — only to return to them pushing a pricey offer, hoping to cash in on affiliate commissions. That didn't go well. We chat about her approach to writing marketing emails now, the importance of building trust, why laziness is a part of her brand, how being decidedly different has helped her attract a huge following, AND her new book: Tough Titties: On Living Your Best Life When You're the F-ing Worst'. Now, she's focused on being comfortable with her own experiences and skills to find the success she's looking for. Caroline and Jason Zook are two creatives who are full of ideas. They're the founders of Wandering Aimfully – the UN-boring coaching program for intentional online business owners – and Teachery: a software platform for creating and hosting online courses. After more than a decade of online entrepreneurship, they found that constantly creating and launching new ideas is exhausting. They figured there had to be another way. In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, the Zooks describe how putting less energy into new ideas and more energy into refining existing ideas has created two reliable, profitable, and intentional businesses for them. Amy Posner and Kirsty Fanton have been (highly successful) lone wolves in the online business world for years. So when they teamed up to launch a new group coaching programme, they were so excited to be working together they forgot to create a launch strategy. Without a plan, their launch totally flopped. They sold just 2 spots. On this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, Amy and Kirsty join me for a conversation about how us business owners sometimes preach one thing for our clients and but then don't do the same thing for ourselves. As Amy puts it, "It's difficult to do for yourself what you do naturally for your clients". Listen to this episode to understand how they bounced back from their launch failure. Every Black woman knows what it means to play the “Nice Black Girl" in the workplace. Just like every Black woman knows what it means to be labeled the “Angry Black Woman”. Between these two labels, Black women have to make hard choices about how they engage, disagree, and work with their colleagues and clients, while maintaining their professional integrity and sense of identity and well-being. In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, I interview ethnic and gender pay gaps consultant Michelle Gyimah about how she navigated client relationships as a Black woman who was trying to avoid being stereotyped as the "Angry Black Woman". Michelle shares the mistake this led her to make, and what you can learn from it. Why is the idea of earning 6 figures of revenue so coveted? And why are we willing to make *so* many sacrifices to get there? In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, I interview self-transformation coach LaYinka Sanni about how she dropped thousands of pounds on a coach that promised her she could make 6 figures A MONTH...when she wasn't even making £1000 a month. LaYinka quickly realised she wasn't ready for this programme, and she was left feeling worse about her ability to run a successful business. You'll hear how LaYinka came to terms with her mistake and how she eventually achieved business success. We also break down why she was so focused on earning 6 figures, so early on in her career. Tarzan Kay trusted a highly respected sales guru to teach her how to sell online. And she readily admits that led to a seven-figure business. But she later realised that what he really taught her was how to use persuasion to her own advantage and sell people courses they didn't need. In this episode of Mistakes That Made, I talk with email marketing and storytelling expert Tarzan Kay about the dangers of online courses and coaching that use persuasive marketing tactics to take advantage of people. We talk about how these tactics can work on even the savviest of business people and how this can be detrimental to those who are new to the online business world. Sometimes, we don't know when or how to say no. My guest for this episode is Star Melancon. Star is a scientist turned entrepreneur who struggled with setting boundaries in her corporate workplace before launching her own financial consulting business. Star thought removing herself from the corporate environment would restore her ability to set boundaries and give her a healthy work-life balance. But Star learned that without true transformation, she would continue the same people-pleasing practices that led to serious physical and mental health consequences. That mistake forced her to turn inward and figure out what made her put everyone else's needs before her own. Find the transcript of this episode on my site, emancopyco.com/podcast.
