Send us Fan MailDefiance can look like disrespect, but what if it is really stress, shame, and a nervous system that cannot downshift? We pick up our series on oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) with a clear, parent-friendly breakdown of what ODD is, how common it is, and why it is most often diagnosed in kids and teens. We also talk through why the label gets missed or brushed off, even though it has been in the DSM for decades. From there, we dig into the risk factors that show up again and again: ADHD and emotional dysregulation, trauma and adverse childhood experiences, high-conflict homes, and inconsistent discipline that turns rules into a moving target. We also cover how autism spectrum traits, learning disabilities, sensory processing challenges, and executive functioning deficits can lower frustration tolerance and make everyday demands feel impossible. If you have ever wondered why a child seems to argue everything, explode fast, or blame others, we connect those behaviors to what may be happening underneath without excusing harm.We get practical about what helps: structure, predictability, fewer power struggles, and stronger positive reinforcement so the only attention is not tied to the worst moments. We talk therapy tools like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), why family therapy can change the whole household dynamic, and how repairing trust often starts with adults regulating themselves and owning mistakes. We also answer the medication question plainly: no medication is specifically approved for ODD, but treatment can include meds for co-occurring ADHD, depression, or severe mood instability under psychiatric guidance. You will also hear our “winner of the week” rescue dog story plus a shelter spotlight on May, who needs a home. Send us Fan MailDefiance gets blamed on attitude, laziness, or “bad parenting,” but what if the real issue is a nervous system that can't calm down fast enough? We dig into oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in a clear, practical way, breaking down what the diagnosis actually means and why it's so often misunderstood. If you've ever watched a child or teen go from fine to furious in seconds, this conversation helps you see what may be happening beneath the surface. We walk through the DSM-5 framework for ODD, including the three big clusters clinicians look for: angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior, and vindictiveness. We also talk about everyday signs people notice, like frequent tantrums, constant arguing, refusing rules, blaming others, and being easily annoyed, then explain the key point that separates ODD from typical boundary pushing: intensity, consistency, and real impairment across home, school, and social life. We also place ODD in context, including how it first appeared in the DSM in 1980 and why it differs from conduct disorder, which involves more serious, planned violations. From there, we get into what research and lived experience often point to: emotional dysregulation, executive functioning challenges, stress, trauma, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and other neurodevelopment factors that can combine into a perfect storm. We close with why families can miss the deeper issue at first and preview a Part Two with more support and next steps. Send us Fan MailStar Wars is fun, but the Force hits harder when you treat it like a map of your own mind. On May the Fourth, we go beyond fandom and use the Jedi and Sith as two competing philosophies of how to live with emotion, power, fear, and desire. If you have ever tried to “stay positive” while feeling something darker underneath, this conversation gives you a clearer way to think about what's actually happening inside you.We explore why the Sith can feel weirdly relatable: passion, ambition, individuality, and self determination. Then we connect that to existentialism and the warning baked into the saga: freedom without ethical grounding turns destructive fast. From there we tackle the biggest question behind the entire Star Wars arc, what does “balance” even mean? We argue it's not about wiping out the dark side, it's about integration, self awareness, and choosing responsibility over impulse. That leads us straight into Carl Jung and the shadow, the parts of ourselves we try to hide or suppress. We talk about how growth comes from acknowledging the shadow instead of pretending it doesn't exist, and how that idea lines up with the Force as a metaphor for the human condition. We also nerd out a bit with lightsaber talk to close things out.If you enjoy psychology, philosophy, mental health conversations, or you just want Star Wars to feel useful in real life, hit play. Send us Fan MailMay the Fourth is a fun excuse to talk Star Wars, but we take a sharper turn: what if “the Force” is really a map of the human mind? We use the language of Jedi and Sith to explore themes we see every day in therapy and hypnosis work: emotional regulation, inner conflict, fear, connection, and the constant push to feel in control while still staying human. We unpack the Force as an “energy that binds all living things” and connect it to real philosophical traditions like qi and prana, plus Western ideas like Stoicism and the search for inner peace. From there, we get into the part most people live in: the gray area. Light side vs dark side sounds like good vs evil, but yin and yang points to something more useful. Opposing forces can be interconnected, and the real problem is often imbalance, not emotion itself. Then we look at the Jedi code through a modern mental health lens. Discipline can be a superpower, but detachment can slide into shutdown when it turns into constant suppression. Anakin's story becomes a cautionary tale about unprocessed fear of loss and what happens when a mentor or a system tells you to “let go” without teaching you how. If you have ever tried to keep it together while something you love feels at risk, this conversation will hit close to home.If you like thoughtful psychology with a pop culture hook, subscribe for part two, share the episode with a friend, and leave us a review so more people can find the show.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. Send us Fan MailAutism is one of those words that everyone thinks they understand until you start talking about how it actually feels day to day. We get into the lived reality of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including why sensory overload can turn ordinary sounds, lights, and textures into a wall of stress, and why that constant friction can feed anxiety, depression, and even OCD-like patterns as people try to create order in a noisy world. We also tackle a question we hear all the time: “How do I get tested for autism?” The frustrating truth is there's no single definitive blood test or simple checkbox that confirms it. Diagnosis often comes down to patterns, history, and honest conversation about symptoms and functioning. That subjectivity is exactly why stereotypes and TV portrayals can do damage. Autism can present in subtle ways, especially in adults who have spent years masking, compensating, and wondering why certain situations feel impossible. From there, we focus on what actually helps: respect for boundaries, clear communication, predictable structure, and support that adapts to the person instead of forcing the person to adapt to everyone else. We talk about why autism is not “curable,” what therapy can realistically improve, when medication might be considered for related symptoms, and how important it is to find a therapist you truly connect with. If this conversation helps you rethink autism, share it with someone who needs it, subscribe for more mental health talk with real humor, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Send us Fan MailA lot of adults walk around with the same quiet question: why do certain sounds, textures, routines, or social moments hit me so much harder than everyone else? We get that question constantly, so we finally sat down to talk about autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in plain language and with real-life examples, including the stuff people rarely say out loud like how one small change in routine can knock you off balance for the whole day.We break down what “spectrum” really means, why autism looks different in every person, and why the popular media image of autism (think savants and extreme stereotypes) leaves most autistic adults unseen. We talk sensory processing differences like bright lights, loud rooms, itchy clothing tags, and food texture issues, plus the deep-focus interests that can swallow time when you get locked in. We also challenge the empathy myth and explain how autistic people can feel intensely while still expressing emotions in their own way. Then we connect the dots to mental health: masking, burnout, anxiety, depression, and the relationship stress that can happen when someone is labeled rigid or difficult instead of supported. We tee up Autism Part 2 for practical ways to support autistic individuals, and we also share a quick Winner Of The Week story plus a Detroit Dog Rescue spotlight for Rip, who needs a home. Send us Fan MailA mental health label can be a lifeline, or it can quietly become a cage. We get real about what mental health trends and statistics actually mean once they hit the therapy room, especially when someone walks in convinced a diagnosis from 20 years ago still defines them today. Matt Fox joins me as we talk about why diagnoses should be based on symptom patterns, duration, and daily functioning and why they can legitimately change as new details emerge. We also pull back the curtain on the system itself: insurance billing often requires a diagnosis code tied to session codes, which can pressure clinicians to name something before the full story is clear. From there we zoom out to comorbidity, because mental health rarely arrives one symptom at a time. Anxiety and depression commonly overlap, PTSD and substance abuse often pair up, and ADHD can fuel anxiety when life feels unmanageable. Then we dig into disparities that shape who gets help and who doesn't: women seek treatment more often, men avoid it and face higher suicide rates, and stigma still blocks care. We talk income, disability, rural access, and the complicated promise of telehealth therapy and mental health apps, including what makes online sessions work and what can make them pointless. If you want a grounded, practical take on diagnosis, therapy effectiveness, and how to advocate for yourself, hit play, share it with someone who needs it, and subscribe. Send us Fan MailOne in five US adults is living with a mental illness, and the odds are high that someone in your family, workplace, or friend group is quietly carrying it. We take a hard look at mental health trends in 2026, including what the latest stats say about anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and more, plus the gut-punch reality that depression rates have surged over the last decade. We also talk about the part nobody wants to admit out loud: access. Mental health may be the leading driver of disability claims, but treatment is still out of reach for a lot of people. We unpack why only about half of those diagnosed actually receive treatment, why so few people make it to therapy in a given year, and how cost, stigma, rural provider shortages, and high-deductible insurance plans keep people stuck. Along the way, we highlight demographic patterns, including why young adults are hit so hard, why women seek help more often, and why men are less likely to ask for support even when the stakes are life and death. Finally, we get practical and hopeful. Most mental health conditions are treatable and manageable, and progress starts when you stop treating symptoms like a personal failure and start treating them like a health issue you can work on. We also share why we're cautious about diagnoses becoming identities and how changing your thinking can change your life. Send us Fan MailA tiny comment can hit like a gut punch, and the worst part is how easy it is to doubt yourself afterward. We pick up Microaggressions Part Two by focusing on the person on the receiving end: what you feel, what your nervous system does in real time, and how to respond in a way that protects your dignity without turning every moment into a fight. We break down the stress response (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn) and why microaggressions can trigger frustration, confusion, self-doubt, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion even when the “intent” is fuzzy. Then we get practical: the 3-3-3 reset (three things you hear, three you see, move three body parts), simple paced breathing, and mindful pauses that bring you back to the present so you can choose your next move. From there, we share real-world scripts for handling workplace microaggressions, family comments, and social situations: clarifying questions that stay neutral, I statements that describe impact without accusing, educational responses when someone truly doesn't get it, and boundary-setting when direct is best. We also talk about when it's valid to say nothing, how to process the emotional residue afterward, and the bigger therapy truth that you can't control other people, only yourself and your choices about access. You'll also hear our Winner of the Week story, plus a quick spotlight on Happy, an adoptable pup. Send us Fan MailA compliment that makes your stomach drop is still a problem, even if the speaker “meant well.” We unpack microaggressions, those subtle comments and behaviors that communicate bias, and we explain why they're called micro even though the impact can be anything but small. Along the way, we give real examples you've heard at work, in public, and online, like “you're so articulate,” “you're surprisingly confident,” “I don't see color,” and the passive aggressive habit of not bothering to learn someone's name.We also talk about what repeated microaggressions do to your mental health. Think of them like paper cuts: one is annoying, but daily paper cuts create real pain. That buildup can lead to anxiety, self doubt, emotional fatigue, and the exhausting inner debate of “Did I imagine that?” We get into why this happens so often, including unconscious bias and learned mental shortcuts, and why good intentions don't cancel the harm. Then we turn it practical. If you're on the receiving end, we walk through steps to pause, validate what you felt, and name the issue so a real conversation can happen. If you realize you've said something that landed wrong, we lay out a clean repair: listen without defensiveness, apologize without qualification, and learn and adjust. Then we get into the moments that split public opinion right down the middle: Simone Biles stepping back in 2021 to protect her mental health, and Sha'Carri Richardson's marijuana ban, which opens up a real conversation about Olympic drug rules, federal vs state legality, and what “fairness” is actually supposed to mean. From there, we roll through judging and scoring chaos across eras, including Jordan Chiles and the podium-whiplash of a late inquiry, Marion Jones and the lasting stain of doping, the infamous 1972 USA vs USSR basketball finish, and why razor-thin timing debates like Michael Phelps' 2008 butterfly can still feel unsettled. Send us Fan MailThe Olympic moments we never forget are rarely just about the score. They are about nerves, timing, pressure, and the weird way one perfect run or one impossible upset can turn into a lifelong memory you can replay on demand. We're back with one of our favorite formats: a Top 10 countdown of the most iconic U.S. Olympic moments in history. We go sport by sport and era by era, from Mary Lou Retton's trailblazing gymnastics gold to Simone Biles' dominance, from Florence Griffith Joyner's still-unbroken sprint records to Michael Phelps rewriting what “greatest swimming performance” even means. We also dig into track and field greatness like Alison Felix and Carl Lewis, then step into Olympic history with Jesse Owens in Berlin and why that moment still carries weight far beyond medals.Of course, we argue about the order, because you can't talk Olympics without debate. We break down why the Miracle on Ice remains the gold standard for underdog stories, then hit honorable mentions like Kerri Strug's 1996 vault and Muhammad Ali lighting the Atlanta torch. Matt also brings in winter Olympic takes, including a heartfelt nod to Mikaela Shiffrin, plus a very opinionated skiing vs snowboarding etiquette segment that every mountain regular will recognize. We also share a quick community “winner of the week” story that hits the same theme of people showing up for each other, and we spotlight Buddy from Detroit Dog Rescue who needs a home. Send us Fan MailLoneliness doesn't always look like being alone. Sometimes it looks like scrolling, posting, and still feeling invisible. We get real about the loneliness epidemic and the traps that make it worse, especially the way social media trains us to crave quick validation while offering very little true connection. We also share a mindset shift that helps immediately: online interaction is often surface-level, and your worth can't be measured by comments, likes, or whether someone “responds.”From there, we dig into the practical side of building adult friendships and why it feels so much harder than it did in school. As kids, proximity does the work for us. As adults, work schedules, family obligations, commuting, and fear of rejection can quietly shrink our social world. We talk about what actually grows friendship over time: repeated contact, shared experiences, and emotional openness. We also discuss a helpful benchmark many studies point to, around 50 hours together before a bond starts to feel real, which can take the pressure off if you're expecting instant best-friend energy. We wrap with specific, doable steps to fight social isolation: treat friendship like a priority, be the initiator, plan time together, accept that not every connection becomes close, and watch for red flags when effort is one-sided. We also talk about empathy as the foundation of real support, showing up, listening, and resisting the urge to “fix” people. Send us Fan MailLoneliness can be brutal because it doesn't always look like isolation. You can have a relationship, coworkers, family dinners, even hundreds of social media friends and still feel that hollow disconnect that nobody really sees you. We get honest about why that happens, why it's becoming more common, and what your brain is actually doing when you start pulling away from people. We also offer a clearer definition that cuts through the confusion: loneliness is the gap between the connection you want and the connection you feel. That framing matters, because it turns loneliness into useful information instead of a label you wear. We talk about the social media illusion of connection, how scrolling replaces real conversations, and why comparison makes disconnection worse. Then we zoom out to the real-life reasons adult friendship is harder than it used to be: schedules, distance, family responsibilities, career changes, and moving to a new place. From there, we dig into the psychology of chronic loneliness, including the shift into social threat mode where you assume rejection before it happens. A late reply or a cancelled plan can feel personal, and that perception can lock you into a cycle of reaching out less and feeling worse. We close with practical first steps you can take now: focus on depth over quantity, initiate more than your fear wants you to, and find shared-interest spaces like volunteering, community classes, community centers, and local groups. Send a textAnxiety can feel like an engine stuck at redline—your thoughts race, your chest tightens, and logic gets drowned out by adrenaline. We're breaking down what actually helps. From fast-acting benzodiazepines for crisis moments to long-term SSRIs that lower your baseline anxiety, we talk about what these medications do in the brain, how they differ, and why the right plan can mean real sleep, clearer thinking, and the freedom to do things you've been avoiding. We also get honest about risks and stigma. Dependence and withdrawal make benzos a short-term tool that needs guardrails and a thoughtful taper. SSRIs come with an adjustment period and possible side effects like emotional blunting or sexual changes. The key is personalization: track how you feel, meet your prescriber regularly, and adjust dosage or switch medications when needed. When medication reduces panic and calms your nervous system, therapy starts working better—exposure gets easier, mindfulness sticks, and daily life stops feeling like a series of alarms.Tools matter too. We share simple, proven techniques you can use tonight: tactile grounding like finger-to-thumb tapping and rhythmic clapping, guided apps with noise colors to quiet rumination, and light-based practices that use visual fixation to downshift arousal—similar in principle to classic hypnosis methods. We cover when beta blockers shine for public speaking or high-stakes events, and how to decide if meds belong in your plan by asking whether anxiety is disrupting work, relationships, or sleep, and how often panic strikes. If you've wondered “Will meds change who I am?” or “Does needing help mean I'm weak?” this conversation reframes relief as strategy, not surrender. Send a textAnxiety can feel like a siren that never shuts off—racing heart, shaky hands, spinning thoughts. We break down the tools that can turn down the noise, from fast-acting benzodiazepines to longer-term SSRIs and SNRIs, and we get real about benefits, risks, and how to use meds without letting them use you. You'll hear why benzos act like a fire extinguisher in a panic, how SSRIs and SNRIs rewire emotional regulation over weeks, and where buspirone and beta blockers help when worry is more cognitive or when the body symptoms take the lead.We dig into brain mechanics in plain language: GABA as the brake pedal, the amygdala's overactivation, and stress hormones like cortisol that prime the fight-or-flight response. Then we connect the science to everyday life with a powerful reframe—your panic sensations can mirror a workout—so the body's alarms feel less like danger and more like energy you can ride. That shift matters, because fear of the sensations often fuels the spiral more than the sensations themselves. Most important, we treat medication as a tool, not a finish line. Pairing the right prescription with therapy creates space to do the real work: confronting avoidance, testing catastrophic predictions, and building new habits until calm becomes your baseline. We also share a moving “winner of the week” rescue and spotlight an adoptable dog, because hope and heart help too. If you've wondered whether anxiety meds are addictive, if they change your personality, or how to weigh side effects against relief, this is your guide to informed, compassionate choices.Enjoyed the show? Send a textFeeling better shouldn't feel like a mystery. We dig into the real mechanics of antidepressants—how SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAOIs, and atypicals shift brain chemistry over time—and why the two-to-six week window makes sense once you see how stabilization actually works. Along the way, we unpack the biggest myths: no, these meds don't rewrite your personality, and no, they don't create the craving cycle you see with opioids or benzodiazepines. What they can do is give you a steadier emotional floor so therapy and daily habits finally stick. We also talk about why pairing medication with therapy changes the game. When your baseline moves from chaos to calm, you make clearer choices and build momentum. Hypnosis shows up here as a clinical tool, not a stage trick—useful for downshifting anxiety, reframing pain, and training attention so it stops feeding the spiral. Think of it as cognitive strength training: short, focused sessions that unlock better days while medication does its quieter work in the background. If you've ever asked, “Will I still be me?” try a sharper question: “When was I my best me?” Answering that helps shape treatment choices, from activating meds for low energy to options with fewer sexual side effects, and it gives therapy a specific target to build toward. We offer practical steps for the in-between weeks—mood tracking, micro-rituals, honest check-ins—and a reminder to taper with your prescriber if you're making changes. Stability isn't perfection; it's the space where joy, focus, and connection become possible again. If this conversation helps, share it with someone who's stuck in the fog. After 5 years and 200 episodes (
Send a textA four-hour swim through rough seas sets the tone for resilience, and we channel that grit into a clear-eyed tour of antidepressants that actually help people get their lives back. We pick up our series on depression treatment with a practical, plain-English guide to SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, MAOIs, and atypicals—how each class works on serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine, what side effects to expect, and why some meds also ease nerve pain or insomnia. If you've ever wondered why results take two to six weeks, we break down the brain science: receptors need time to recalibrate and new pathways to form, which is why steady dosing and patience pay off.We share how we approach titration, when to hold, when to adjust, and how pharmacogenomic tools like Genesight can reduce trial-and-error by flagging side-effect risks up front. You'll hear why bupropion can boost energy and focus with fewer sexual side effects, when mirtazapine's sedation and appetite increase are a feature not a bug, and why TCAs and MAOIs still matter for tough, treatment-resistant cases. Most importantly, we explain why medication is a tool, not the destination: better outcomes come when meds lower symptom intensity and therapy builds lasting skills—sleep, exercise, reframing, and relationship repair. We also get candid about the real-world mess: insurance hurdles that delay payments and care, and how clinics navigate those roadblocks to keep patients supported. It's an unfiltered, compassionate look at what works, what to watch for, and how to advocate for the help you deserve. Press play to get smarter about your options, prepare for part three on myths and misconceptions, and take a step toward relief that lasts. If this helped, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs clarity, and leave a quick review to help more listeners find solid mental health guidance.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. Send a textEver been told “antidepressants change your personality” or “you'll be on them forever”? We're cutting through the noise with a clear, grounded tour of how modern antidepressants work, why they were discovered by accident, and what real people should know before starting, switching, or stopping. We share the surprising roots of MAOIs and tricyclics, how SSRIs became mainstream, and where ECT fits today for treatment-resistant cases. No jargon, no scare tactics—just the essentials you can use to make smarter choices with your clinician. We break down brain basics in plain English: neurons, synapses, and the roles of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in mood and motivation. You'll hear why reuptake inhibition matters, what changes to expect first, and how to spot common side effects like sleep shifts, nausea, and sexual dysfunction. Just as important, we draw a bright line between dependence and addiction, and explain why tapering off—never quitting cold turkey—protects your body while you pivot your plan.Along the way, we talk stigma, ask the questions your provider hopes you'll bring, and explore how medication pairs with therapy, sleep, movement, and community to create lasting relief. Plus, a gripping “Winner of the Week” rescue, show updates from the Motor City Hypnotist studio, and a quick adoption spotlight for Minnie from Detroit Dog Rescue. Send a textWhat if one small shift could turn tense conversations into genuine understanding? We dive into emotional intelligence part two and move from the inside out—starting with self-awareness and landing on practical empathy you can use today at home, at work, and online. We break down the difference between empathy and agreement, why limitless empathy leads to burnout, and how “listening to understand” changes the tone of any room. You'll hear simple, repeatable tools: reflect what you heard, label the emotion you sense, and ask a curious follow-up that invites connection instead of defensiveness. We also get real about conflict—how to state needs clearly, repair after missteps with a sincere apology, and find common ground without caving on your values.Workplace dynamics get a spotlight with strategies for reading the room, giving precise feedback, and managing stress so it doesn't spread. Then we tackle the digital trap: doomscrolling, algorithm bait, and knowing when to disengage. If the news is vital, it will reach you—so set guardrails and protect your emotional bandwidth. To help you build durable habits, we share daily reps that compound: one emotional check-in, one mindful pause before responding, and one empathetic question in every conversation. For deeper study, we point to Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence and the GLAD practice—gratitude, learned, accomplishment, delight—to train attention toward balance. If you want fewer blowups, better mornings, and calmer meetings, this one gives you clear steps to start right away. Send a textEver say the right thing in the worst way? We tackle emotional intelligence with practical tools you can use today to recognize what you feel, regulate your reactions, and connect without losing your cool. David R. Wright, the Motor City Hypnotist, breaks EI down to essentials—self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills—and shows how they play out at home, at work, and in your own mind.We start by making emotions visible. You'll learn how body signals often arrive before thoughts and why naming precise feelings—embarrassed, dismissed, overwhelmed—can dial down intensity fast. From there, we move into strategies that turn conflict into clarity: a 90-second rule to ride the wave, simple breathing to reset your physiology, and a crucial pause before hitting send on that rage-text. For couples and teams, we share structured conversation rules—no interruptions, clear turn-taking, and I-statements—that lower defensiveness and surface the real issue, whether it's respect, control, or fear of criticism. You'll also hear why IQ isn't enough when stakes are high and how emotionally intelligent leaders spot triggers, read body language, and respond with calm, specific language. We highlight a feel-good Winner of the Week about high school students repairing cars for single moms, and we close with a Detroit Dog Rescue spotlight for Cadju, a smirking charmer who needs a home.If you're ready to swap reactivity for presence, build a richer emotional vocabulary, and make better decisions under pressure, this one's for you. Send us a textReady for a dose of proof that hope is practical? We're closing the book on 2025 by pulling together the moments that stayed with us: a golden retriever pulled from an icy pond by quick-thinking firefighters, a delivery driver who trusted his gut and saved a life, and community stars who stepped up in quiet, meaningful ways. These stories aren't just feel-good; they're a playbook for how small acts ripple into big change. We also revisit the mental health tools listeners kept using all year. Social media can be a stress amplifier, but with tighter boundaries and intentional feeds, it can deliver real connection. Laughter gets top billing because it's a physiological reset that lowers cortisol and builds social glue, and music works just as fast—curated playlists became our go-to for focus, recovery, and comfort. Pets show up as everyday therapists, giving structure, joy, and sometimes literal lifesaving alerts. And for those curious about care beyond the usual, we share insights from our team: energy-based support like Reiki for clients who want it, plus grounded, shame-free sex therapy that treats desire, dysfunction, and trust as mental health issues with practical steps forward.Threaded through it all is our favorite tradition: Winners of the Week. From retired police dogs returning to track down hikers to a 66-year-old finally joining a marching band, these moments prove that courage is contagious. We're setting a new goal to bring some of these folks onto the show so we can ask the unanswered questions and go deeper than a headline ever can. Send us a textNeed a clean reset for the new year without the hype? We're back from a short sabbatical with a focused year in review that trims the fluff and doubles down on what actually helps: clear therapy tools, real self-care, and stories that rewire belief. We kick off with a jaw-dropping Winner of the Week—Hari Budha Magar, a British veteran and double above-knee amputee, who completed the Seven Summits—then unpack how his achievement models adaptation, grit, and purpose for anyone facing hard goals. From there, we get practical. We talk about the mental health power of deep-focus hobbies—like model building and family puzzles—and how to use flow states without slipping into burnout. Structure beats willpower: time-box your focus, set hard stops, and keep your recovery just as intentional. We revisit our most-requested therapy Q&A insights: how to choose the right therapist, define a goal in one sentence, and measure progress you can feel. We also return to golf therapy, where breath, movement, and attention under gentle pressure become portable regulation skills for anxiety and focus.Autism and emotional regulation earned a big spotlight this year, and for good reason. The spectrum is diverse, strengths are real, and support works best when it's tailored. We dig into practical tools for overstimulation, clearer communication, and routine-building that honors autonomy. The throughline across everything is simple: self-care isn't luxury, it's the work—small systems repeated consistently, with compassion. If you're ready to build a steadier 2025, hit play, take what serves you, and leave the rest. Send us a textEver wondered what songs get stuck in a hypnotist's head? In this musical journey, David and Matt pull back the curtain on their personal playlists, sharing the tracks that have shaped their lives and continue to move them emotionally.David takes us through his affection for what he playfully calls "faux rock bands" of the 80s—Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon—with particular fondness for "Separate Ways" and its distinctive guitar harmonics. His enthusiasm for The Doors reveals a deeper connection, having "consumed every book ever written" about the band, while his discovery of Muse years after their initial popularity demonstrates how great music finds us when we're ready for it.Matt brings a contrasting musical palette to the conversation, from Coldplay's "Clocks" (which he insists feels like a personal performance when experienced live) to electronic tracks by Spunk Shine and Shapeshifter that instantly transport him into relaxation mode after stressful workdays. His passion for Hamilton showcases how experiencing the same music from different physical perspectives—whether on Disney+ or from opposite sides of a theater—creates entirely new impressions of familiar material. What makes this episode particularly compelling is how each song selection reveals something profound about its chooser. When Matt describes Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries as having "the voice of an angel" or David explains how Earth, Wind & Fire's vocal harmonies in "Fantasy" speak to his musical training, we witness music's ability to connect with our unique experiences and emotional wiring. The conversation becomes a fascinating exploration of how we develop relationships with songs—some through technical appreciation, others through emotional association, and many through shared moments with loved ones. As streaming has changed our listening habits, their nostalgic reflections on experiencing albums from start to finish serve as a gentle reminder of what we might be missing in today's single-track world.Whether you're seeking new additions to your playlist or simply enjoy hearing passionate people discuss the music that moves them, this episode offers a window into how deeply personal our soundtracks can be. Send us a textHave you ever noticed how certain songs can instantly transport you to specific moments in your life, triggering powerful emotions and memories? This phenomenon lies at the heart of music's profound impact on our mental health—a topic David and Matt explore by sharing their personal favorite songs that make them feel good.Selecting just a handful of favorites proves nearly impossible as both hosts struggle to narrow down their extensive musical preferences. David's selections include Depeche Mode's "Halo," Queen's "The Show Must Go On," and The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," each choice accompanied by personal connections and meaningful backstories. Matt counters with his love for The Chemical Brothers, Gene Vincent's "Be-Bop-A-Lula," and an hour-and-a-half Fatboy Slim concert that sustained him through COVID lockdowns. The episode features a heartwarming "Winner of the Week" story about Kent Broussard, who at age 66 fulfilled his childhood dream of joining LSU's marching band. After watching them perform as a nine-year-old in 1968, Kent carried this aspiration for decades. Upon approaching retirement, he enrolled in college, relearned the tuba, began intensive physical training, and successfully auditioned—becoming the band's oldest member by 41 years. His story perfectly encapsulates the theme that music can inspire and fulfill us at any stage of life.Throughout their conversation, David and Matt touch on music's ability to forge connections between people, create shared experiences, and provide comfort during difficult times. Whether it's a song that becomes special between partners or a playlist that keeps you going through global uncertainty, music's therapeutic benefits extend far beyond mere entertainment. What songs make you feel better when you hear them? Send us a textHave you ever noticed how the right song can instantly change your mood? There's real science behind that feeling. Music doesn't just entertain us—it fundamentally alters our brain chemistry and emotional state in ways that can significantly improve our mental health. When life feels overwhelming, music creates a sanctuary where we can safely process complex emotions. Research consistently shows that listening to music reduces stress hormones like cortisol while increasing feel-good neurotransmitters such as dopamine. This neurochemical shift explains why even sad songs can sometimes make us feel better—they provide a framework for experiencing difficult emotions from a safe distance. What makes music particularly powerful as a mental health tool is its versatility. Classical compositions might calm anxiety, while upbeat tracks can energize and elevate mood. Lyrics often give voice to feelings we struggle to articulate ourselves, creating those "that's exactly how I feel" moments that validate our experiences. For teenagers and young adults especially, music becomes a crucial part of identity formation and emotional development. The connection between music and memory creates another dimension of healing. Songs can transport us to specific moments in time—sometimes painful, but often precious. As we discuss in this episode, reframing our relationship with music tied to departed loved ones can transform these songs from triggers of grief into celebrations of cherished memories.Musicians themselves experience enhanced cognitive benefits, typically showing higher IQs due to the mental coordination required to play instruments. But you don't need talent to benefit from music's psychological effects—simply listening with intention is enough to alter your mental state in meaningful ways.Whether you're creating mood-specific playlists, exploring new genres, or revisiting old favorites, your soundtrack choices matter. The next time you're feeling anxious, sad, or disconnected, try reaching for your headphones—the right song might be the most effective therapy session you'll have all day.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. Send us a textMusic has a remarkable ability to transport us through time, evoke powerful emotions, and even heal our psychological wounds. This fascinating connection between melodies and mental wellbeing takes center stage as we explore how the songs that soundtrack our lives can profoundly impact our emotional health. The power of musical association reveals itself through Casey Clark's touching story. After losing her grandfather, she found solace in Michael Bublé's album—the last gift she gave him before his passing. Now, when grief or PTSD symptoms overwhelm her, those familiar melodies provide grounding when traditional coping techniques fall short. This personal connection exemplifies how music becomes intertwined with our most significant memories and relationships.Science strongly supports what many of us intuitively understand about music's therapeutic qualities. Research demonstrates that regular listening to classical music significantly reduces anxiety levels, while other studies show music helps people recover faster from stressful experiences. The physiological benefits are measurable—lower stress hormones, reduced blood pressure, and decreased heart rate. Music offers both an emotional escape and a way to process complex feelings, particularly when we're stuck in negative thought patterns. Our musical preferences typically form during adolescence and young adulthood, creating lifelong connections that become emotional resources during difficult times. Whether through the nostalgic mixtapes of yesterday or today's carefully curated streaming playlists, these sonic companions help us navigate life's challenges. Instrumental music—from classical compositions to electronic dance music—allows listeners to project their feelings into the soundscape, creating a personalized emotional outlet without the potential distraction of lyrics.Beyond passive listening, actively engaging with music through playing instruments provides additional benefits, fostering discipline, creativity, and emotional expression. These multifaceted musical experiences build resilience and offer healing during times of stress, grief, or anxiety.Ready to explore how music might enhance your own mental wellbeing? Send us a textResilience might be one of the most misunderstood aspects of mental health. Far more than just "bouncing back" or "toughing it out," true resilience is about developing mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility that allows you to adapt when life throws unexpected challenges your way.Have you ever noticed how some people seem to navigate life's difficulties with relative ease while others struggle significantly with similar challenges? The difference often comes down to resilience – and contrary to popular belief, it's not an innate trait but a skill that can be developed through intentional practice. In this deeply practical episode, we break down what mental resilience actually means and provide concrete strategies to help you build this crucial life skill. Drawing from psychological frameworks like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, we explain why physical well-being forms the foundation of mental resilience. The "big three pillars" – sufficient sleep, mindful nutrition, and regular physical activity – create the physiological conditions necessary for emotional stability and cognitive flexibility.Perhaps most importantly, we emphasize that resilience must be cultivated during good times so it's available during challenging ones. Think of it as developing "mental muscle memory" through consistent practice. Simple techniques like mindfulness exercises (we share a powerful thumb-to-finger exercise that engages both brain hemispheres), deep breathing patterns, and engaging in personally meaningful activities all contribute to stronger resilience.Whether you're currently facing difficulties or simply want to prepare for future challenges, this episode offers valuable insights that can help you develop the mental flexibility needed to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs with greater ease and confidence. Send me a text!“Where do we go from here” is a common question when we encounter a crossroads in life. Whether a transition is big or small, each point is an invitation learn more about yourself and choose what is aligned for the person you are becoming. This episode engages two types of transition reflection. First the riptide transition point, when you realize you've unconsciously slid back into ways of being you thought you'd moved away from. Second the seismic transition point, when something outside your control cracks your stability. Though vastly different levels of outward impact, they both impact who you understand yourself to be in relation to your life. Radical self-compassion and connecting with trusted others for support allow the room to intentionally answer where do we go from here.In this episode of Mindset Unlimited, I explore ways we answer the question “Where do we go from here” through reflections on this podcast and speaking to federal workers facing layoffs. Some of what I explore in this episode includes:Why I started this podcastMy relationship to podcasting & perfectionismMy background in SociologyA letter to Federal Workers LINKS TO REFERENCES MADE IN THIS EPISODE:Ask Valerie (anonymous form)Assigned Reading by Becky Mollenkamp CONNECT WITH VALERIE:Sign up for Valerie's newsletterApply to be coached on the podcastSchedule an exploration call This podcast was produced by Valerie Friedlander CoachingProud member of the Feminist Podcasters CollectiveSupport the show
Let's talk about fishing big rivers. For the most part, all of us here at Troutbitten are river anglers, meaning not much stillwater. Furthermore we're mostly wade anglers. We spend most of our time wading rather than floating, because we enjoy it, and because in a lot of cases, wading gives us the best chance for success. But over the years I've noticed some misunderstandings about where and how we fish. I hear from a lot of reader, listeners and watchers of Troutbitten stuff. And one thing that frequently comes up is an assumption that all of our waters are small to medium sized. But that's not true. Each of us spends plenty of time on big rivers. We all have our favorite rivers outside of this region. We've all traveled. And even around here, we have opportunities to fish big rivers. So, what's big? I'll say a big river is one that you could float. And it's probably the kind of river where you can't wade all of it.So we're here to talk about fishing big water. In previous podcasts, we've spent some time talking about specific tactics and strategies for fishing small water, so let's do the same for big rivers. Each of us has a few tricks and some plans for getting the most out of a big water trip. We've made the mistakes, and we've all shared among ourselves how we eventually learned to not only manage big water but have some of the best days of the season.I always say that fishing big water and fishing it well takes a lot of discipline. We talk about all of that and a lot more in this podcastMy friends, Matt Grobe, Bill Dell, Austin Dando and Josh Darling join me for a great discussion.ResourcesVIDEO: Troutbitten | Reading Water in Levels, Lanes and SeamsREAD: Troutbitten | Never Blame the FishREAD: Troutbitten | Fishing Big Water -- One Key TipVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook Thanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/
