You've heard the saying: slow and steady wins the race. Well, that's exactly the approach our guest for the 389th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast built her business. Today we're talking with copywriter Kim Kiel about getting better month and month, and year after year—and not getting caught up in the hustle. And we covered a lot more. You'll want to tune in for this one. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: I love stories about copywriters and other freelancers who find amazing success right out of the gate. They're working with great, high-paying clients on big assignments almost from day one. Those stories illustrate what's possible to those of us who are just beginning the journey. But, those are the exceptions that prove the rule. Very few copywriters hit a home run on their first at bat, or even their second or third. For them, slow and steady wins the race. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, one of the founders of The Copywriter Club. And on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, my co-founder, Kira Hug, and I interviewed copywriter and brand voice expert Kim Kiel. Kim's business growth is the perfect example of the slow and steady copywriter business—getting a bit better every year by charging a bit more, upleveling clients as she gained experience and not getting caught up in the rush to hustle. We talked to Kim about that as well as her unicorn client, her take on the nine word email and why she always follows up every pitch. But before we get to that, if you've been listening to this podcast for long, you've no doubt noticed a recurring theme… how do copywriters and content writers find clients TODAY. Shortly after we launched The Copywriter Club, we created a special report with a bunch of ideas for finding clients and shared it with the world. I recently took a week to rework and revise that report… it now includes more than 21 different ideas for finding clients… some of which you can use today and possibly attract a client in the next 24 hours. Some of the other ideas will take longer to bring in clients. But they all work. We've either used them ourselves, or know other successful copywriters who have used each one of these ideas. And we want to give you this report for free. This isn't a one page pdf that will get lost in your downloads folder. It's comprehensive… 36 idea filled pages… including the 4 mistakes you can't afford to make when looking for clients—if you make them, clients will not work with you. It also includes more than 21 ways to find clients, several templates for reaching out to clients, and finally the five things you need to do to improve your odds of landing a client. If you want a copy of this report, visit thecopywriterclub.com/findaclient — find a client is all one word. And with that, let's go to our interview with Kim. Kira Hug: All right, Kim, let's kick off with your story. How did you end up as a copywriter? Kim Kiel: Well, uh, I got us to tell you, I'm having kind of like a full circle moment because it was about five or six years ago that I was in my kitchen, you know, but bubbling around doing whatever I had to do and listening to The Copywriter Club Podcast and hearing Joel Kletcke, Tarzan Kay, early Justin Blackman talking about this field of copywriting and how they had some really good successes. And it was right around that time that I was needing to find another way to work because I had a day job. In the nonprofit sector, I worked in charity for a couple of decades as a fundraiser, fundraising copywriter, front line communications. And that sort of daily commute and the schedule with the kids, school schedules wasn't working anymore. And so I needed to make a shift. And so I discovered the Copywriter Club at the same time as I kind of discovered this whole online world of business.

Tarzan shares:Her love for sharing stories -- and why you should share more than just the wins, the celebrations, and the good times with your subscribers, followers, or donorsHow to find the bravery to share the mistakes, build the muscle of storytelling, and introduce a new way to connect with your subscribers Fundraising through building relationships with value-based storytelling to create a shared vision with donors The most important metric to track (and it's not click-throughs or unsubscribes!)Using AI and the prompts to use for writing She shares, "We're taught to tell your 'rags to riches story' but all the interesting things are the things that happened in between, the gritty, the beautiful parts, funny parts, the sad parts, the middle where you're not sure where it's going yet. That's where you show people your humanity." About Tarzan Kay:Tarzan Kay teaches online businesses, digital course creators, and freelance service providers how to write emails that are story-powered, fun-to-read and high-converting. She has spent the last three years slowly dismantling her 7-figure boss-babe empire and unlearning the systems of influence and indoctrination that were taught to her as a new business owner. She now teaches how to sell with email according to your own values, by leading with personality, integrity and building connection.Tarzan's WebsiteFollow Tarzan on InstagramFree Live Training on 11/1: Unlock Funds with Every Email! Copywriting Series #5 The popular persuasion principles used in sales copywriting can be used to convince people to buy a program that's not the right fit or spend thousands of dollars they don't have. As digital marketing assistants and specialists, we don't want this for our clients or ourselves. It's unethical, it's bad for business, and it's just gross. She very soon created her own programs teaching business owners how to write story-powered emails and sell using the principles of persuasion. For the last three years, she has been slowly dismantling her 7-figure boss-babe empire and unlearning the systems of influence and indoctrination taught her as a new business owner. Tarzan Kay trusted a highly respected sales guru to teach her how to sell online. And she readily admits that led to a seven-figure business. But she later realised that what he really taught her was how to use persuasion to her own advantage and sell people courses they didn't need. In this episode of Mistakes That Made, I talk with email marketing and storytelling expert Tarzan Kay about the dangers of online courses and coaching that use persuasive marketing tactics to take advantage of people. We talk about how these tactics can work on even the savviest of business people and how this can be detrimental to those who are new to the online business world. Writing Lessons from Nora Ephron Nora Ephron was one of the most popular and accomplished writers in American literature and film. She did it all. Movies, books, essays, magazine articles and more. Today I'm sharing her strategies that you can use to improve your own writing. For more helpful writing tips check out podcast episode 171: Words that Sell: 5 Top Copywriters Share their Best Advice with Laura Belgray, Lacy Boggs, Tarzan Kay, Kimberly Houston, and Danielle Weil The New York Art Scene Circa 1962 There's an exhibit called New York 1962-1964 covering that 3-year period of art in the city. It was a time of epic changes, and the exhibit explores the way artists documented the era. Looking at art through the lens of the events during that time frame reminds me that what's happening in our world impacts how we see and experience events which affects our expression and the art we create. Does the Supreme Court get to decide: What is Art? This fall the supreme court is going to hear a case about Andy Warhol's paintings of the artist known as Prince. Specifically, the legal concern is if the images violate the copywrite law with a portrait of the musician. Essentially, they are deciding “what is art?” Why is this coming up now? The Andy Warhol foundation has licensed work that was originally based on a single-use license. It's complicated and I have lots of questions. Let me know what you think on Instagram. Want to know how to make sure you're protected? Check out podcast 44: Protect Your Art from Copycats and Freeloaders with Legal Expert Katie Lane Take Yourself Seriously as an Artist Did you read any books written by July Blume? Her book Are you There God, It's me Margaret was instructional for me as a young 4th grader. A movie based on the book will be released in 2023. This was the first of 29 books written by Blume but when this was published everyone, including her husband (at the time) laughed at the idea that she was a writer. Not Judy. She knew she was a writer. It's time to re-write your story. Start taking yourself seriously. I want you to choose to believe in yourself as the artists, the writer, the creator that you are. Your Friends Shape Your Mindset A new study from Harvard found that poor children found that kids who had friends from across class lines has better outcomes that those who didn't. I became friends with a group of girls, and we decided that we were gifted. We talked about becoming poets and artists and though I am not in touch with them now, I found out that is exactly what happened for at least 2 of them. The seeds of who we were and who we became were planted during those 6th grade friendships. Our friendships shape what we see as normal. It helped us all believe what was possible for us. Tarzan Kay is quite the entrepreneur. Even if you don't own a business or desire to be your own boss, she has a lot of wisdom to share that just may help you on your journey. Like me, she's always learning and loves to figure out what works and what doesn't. If you think about it, how else are you going to figure out what kind of life you want to create and LIVE? Before she was a successful business owner, she was a successful copywriter. And it's no surprise. As a small child, she wrote that she would be a writer someday. She believes that part luck/part talent/part going for it helped make her successful. She also thinks it has to do with these skills: Giving yourself time Simplify your life and surroundings Know when they are NOT your people Try things Fail, yes fail. (She hates failing, but those failures are the most important lessons) The harder things are, the more growth you have Have compassion for yourself and others You will love her energy and spirit, and you will learn a few important things. Welcome back to our regular Success With Soul Podcast series! This week I'm sharing a powerhouse conversation with some of the most alive, wise, and capable women in business that I know: Tarzan Kay, Jordan Gill, Lattice Hudson, and Ashley Gartland. In this conversation, we get to the heart of what it is to build a business that truly works for you by designing one-of-a-kind hybrid offers that deeply serve your clients, your joy, your health, and your lifestyle. Many of us are taught pretty narrow ideas about how to build a business and be a "successful" entrepreneur. Or rather, each coach we hire or course we take has a really specific idea about how to do this. So you get people in camps, like: live launching or evergreen. Coaching or courses. 1:1 or group. VIP days, memberships, online courses, or agency model. And we feel like we have to choose. PLUS, there's a mindset that accompanies these pick-a-camp approaches. It basically says: You have to pick one approach to your offer, and that's your thing forever If it doesn't work, it means you've failed At the heart of what's unreasonable and unsustainable about these approaches is that they don't take into account any of what it is to be ... well, human. We NEED business models that favor flexibility, creativity, and a fine attunement to what feels aligned and alive in us in our different life seasons. In addition, we need wise mentors like these four women who can model this basic truth: when it comes to how to build a business, the possibilities are endless. You're going to love this conversation! PLUS — if you need help refining the focus of your offer, we've got a GREAT resource to share. Amy Porterfield's excellent FREE What's Your "Thing"? guide will help you identify your unique contribution, so you can increase your impact and your income. What you'll learn in this episode: What each of these women bring — and how they found their perfect (for now) offers What's at the heart of hybrid offers — and the secret to finding what's right for you How they've adjusted in different life seasons (including divorce, kids, and changing interests) What Jordan shifted when she needed to tend to a chronic illness How these women have changed their relationship to failure — and how that's empowered them Subscribe and Review Thanks so much for joining me this week. Do you have strong emotions about email marketing? Most of us do, whether positive or negative. Do you sometimes wonder if email is still a fundamental part of the conversation (IT IS)? When I packed my bags and left for Antarctica in 2018, for an entire month, to go away to the absolute farthest place I could go, I was terrified. But I buried that, that fear, waaaay deep down…so far down I was SURE no one else would be able to see it.Down in that dark place, it turns out there were many layers…I had fears about irrational things that I had no control over: like the boat sinking, like my equipment breaking down, like running out of batteries in the middle of something important… or whether or not I would get sea sick. And then I had some entirely rationale fears too. I had never left my kids for longer than a couple of days at a time…and they're not exactly independent humans. And now, I was going to be gone for more than a month…to a place where I couldn't even talk to them. And, according to my irrational fears, I could die doing this. But when I'm honest with myself, the fear I was really dealing with, was the feeling of being an imposter. I worried everyone would see my fear, smell my fear, and that my fear would get in the way of doing my job - which was, you know, to listen and record everyone and everything. Now don't get me wrong. I was prepared. I do have the skills. And I was there because I was the right person for that job, at that time. And I brought everything I would need, and more. But that message wasn't getting through, to me in this very dark, very scared place.I kept repeating this to myself: You are brave. You are strong enough for this. You are ready. But that message didn't get through, at least at first. Because I felt dread, and confusion, and exhaustion. And this self-doubt continued, until I realized something: We all show up with our shit. We carry it whatever we go. And no matter how far away we go, it comes with us. And so the better approach is to just realize this. To call it out. To name it. And get on with your day. This story originally appeared in my newsletter, Audio Love. That's my email newsletter that I've been sending every other week, for over a year, to a small, but committed audience. Did you know that email marketing is the number one channel for creators to connect with their audience? And it's huge. ConvertKit, which the email platform that I use, which is only one of the ones available, report that last year over 16 billion emails sent. And according to the Data and Marketing Association, who did a survey in 2021, 92% of consumers, and 72% of marketers, said that Email is their favourite way to connect with customers. So here's why I'm telling you all of this. When I sat down to map out an email strategy last year, I realized, that despite the fact that I've been using email since it started, I actually didn't know how to do it for this post-modern era. So, I went a found a course to take…and this month, I've decided to join forces with this woman, whose name is Tarzan, unforgettable, and help her to sell her flagship program, Email Stars, as an affiliate. If you're curious to learn more about how to up your game on email, Tarzan is starting 3 free workshops this month. And if you want to grab a spot for the first one that's happening this Thursday, the 26th of May, just go to the shownotes for this episode, and I'll post the link at the top of the notes where you can grab your spot.Ok, lots of chatting. Time to listen to this short episode now: We all Bring Our Shit Along…Thanks for listening.
“My writing is what I will leave behind and how I'm able to make an impact in my business.” — Tarzan Kay, Legacy Leader and E- mail Marketing Expert What do we mean when we talk about your “voice”? Luckily for us, Legacy Leader Tarzan Kay joined me in The Legacy Lounge to help answer all of these questions and more. Tarzan and I go all the way back to 2016, when we were both just starting our businesses and in the same mastermind. Over six years, we have both experienced incredible growth and change in how we operate our business and how we use our voices to share our message with our audiences. It's been so cool to witness Tarzan's evolution — she has quite a story to share. Tarzan is an e - mail marketing expert and copywriting queen who is finding new ways of marketing that serve the many instead of just the few. Ways that don't leverage nail biting, FOMO, and made-up scarcity but instead allow for the possibility of joy, true connection and radical honesty. She's done the work of finding her true voice for herself and her business, and she's ready to help us do the same…and share tons of great advice on how to implement the most current and best e - mail marketing practices in your business. We cover a lot of ground in this 30 - minute conversation, including: How your e - mail and content copy can change lives How to be more conscious and avoid harmful tactics in your e - mail marketing and launch strategies Tarzan's weekly e - mail copywriting process Why your e - mail list will make you more money than your social media followers any day of the week The difference between copywriting for e - mail marketing and social media marketing The benefits of a small subscriber list Why it's critical that you actively and consistently nurture your subscriber list What to do if you've ghosted your e - mail subscribers ….and more! If you're ready to find your authentic voice and take action in the e - mail marketing and copywriting areas of your business, I invite you to block out 30 minutes to sit down with Tarzan and me in The Legacy Lounge to talk about all things voice and conscious messaging. “What people do find is that they find themselves… who they are and how they show up.”— Kathleen OhWe're raised to believe that happiness is like an equation — if you achieve X, Y, and Z, you're going to live happily ever after. But if you're living in the real world, you already know that it doesn't work that way. Integration coach, breathwork facilitator, and psychedelic guide Kathleen has worked with financially thriving six- and seven-figure entrepreneurs — people who seem from the outside to have their sh*t together. But as Kathleen says, having the car, the house, and the investments doesn't mean that they're happy or feel connected to their inner truths — or even their own authentic wants and needs.“I think what microdosing does is really turns it around and acts as a mirror,” Kathleen says. “Those things that you want, you can be and become and create from the inside out.”This is the second of a two-part interview series. In Part 1, we talked about Kathleen's background, how microdosing actually works, and the political history of psychedelics. In this episode, we dig into the juicy outcomes Kathleen's entrepreneur clients experience — and why we need to rethink what “success” means to us.Hit play and find a new way to work! I truly believe that failing is the best way to learn life's most valuable lessons. If you're not failing, you're holding yourself back from living up to your true potential and from being wildly successful. I had the pleasure of interviewing a brilliant email marketing expert and copywriting course creator, Tarzan Kay (isn't her name just fabulous?). Tarzan was never financially secure growing up and well into adulthood. Born into an intensely Christian family, (where she could only wear dresses, couldn't watch TV, etc.), she was basically forced to focus on finding her life's purpose. Tarzan credits her strict (& often tumultuous) childhood for who she is today. As a teenager, she fell into a life of drug use but found the incredible strength at age 20 to slam on the breaks and not allow herself to continue down that dark path. She became one of the world's best copywriters (charging thousands of dollars a day for her amazing work) and has since focused her career on creating online courses to help other entrepreneurs learn the incredible skill of writing to sell (a.k.a copywriting). Now a mom of 2, she's the breadwinner for her family and wouldn't have it any other way. She has found her life's purpose and candidly shares all the failures that brought her to where she is today. She also opens up about the truth behind how the marketing industry feeds into unrealistic expectations for your business (no one talks about this!) As you listen to this episode, you'll also hear: The fascinating story behind her name (this is EPIC) The one thing she wishes she knew when she first started How your failures ultimately lead to your biggest successes The intense moment she “woke up” and gained awareness at a whole different level (brace yourself for this one—it's utterly fantastic) I can't wait for you to hear this! Love, Kim xo Reference List: Tarzan Kay's courses (https://tarzankay.com/) Swipe files of her awesome sales emails (https://tarzankay.com/emails) Tarzan Kay's IG: (https://www.instagram.com/tarzan_kay/?hl=en) “Copy Caboose” (launches March 2021!) QUOTES USED: “You can write all you want, but if you can't sell, you're not going to be successful.” “Your biggest failures become your best stories.” “Failure is how we learn. If you don't admit where you've failed, you're holding the business back.”
