She Runs Ultras is about (yup, you guessed it) running ultras. Lots of other running podcasts out there are full of gear & race reviews and interviews with the experts telling unrelatable stories about their record breaking times and super human feats. Now…don’t get me wrong, I’ve learned some great stuff from those podcasts...But what about those of us that aren’t getting paid to do this? Those of us that are mid to back of the pack runners? And those of us that have never won a damn thing? What was out there for us? Yeah, I couldn’t find it - so I decided to make it! And it just so happens that I’m getting geared up to start training for some races in 2021. So throughout this series, I’ll share what really happens when a typical, non-professional runner takes on the challenge of running an ultra. Got some races planned for this year? Let’s train together. From the emotional & physical ups and downs, to the details of my actual training plan, and the excitement (not to mention nerves) that build as race day gets closer...I promise not to hold anything back. So whether you’re already a member of the ultra community or if you’re just ultra curious...Hit subscribe and let’s do this!

    Ivy Insights

The She Runs Ultras podcast is by far my favorite running podcast out there. Meghan, the host, is incredibly real, authentic, and relatable to the average runner like myself. Her episodes have taught me so much about running and have given me a tremendous amount of motivation to get out there and run. I discovered this podcast between my first Ultra in May and my second in September, and it has been an invaluable resource ever since.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is Meghan's authenticity. She truly comes across as down-to-earth and makes you feel like she is just one of us. As a Physical Therapist, I was particularly interested in her Run Farther Faster Stronger self-paced functional training program that she mentioned on one of her episodes. I signed up for it and absolutely love it. It's refreshing to have someone who is not seeking medals or PRs but rather focuses on practical training methods that anyone can benefit from.

Another great aspect of this podcast is that Meghan's perspective comes from being an everyday runner like myself. She isn't an elite runner chasing records or accolades; she is just a regular person with a passion for running. This makes her ultra goals seem more within reach for us average runners, and her podcast provides amazing guidance and inspiration to help achieve those goals.

On the downside, one might argue that this podcast caters specifically to ultra runners and may not be as relevant for runners who prefer shorter races. However, I would argue that even if you're not an ultra runner, there are still plenty of valuable insights to be gained from listening to Meghan's episodes. She covers a wide range of topics that every runner can use to enhance their training.

In conclusion, The She Runs Ultras podcast is an absolute gem for any runner looking for relatable content and practical advice. Meghan's authenticity shines through in every episode, making her relatable to runners at any level. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned runner, this podcast will provide you with valuable knowledge and motivation to take your running journey to the next level. I highly recommend giving it a listen.

And if you're relying on it to get you through your training, you're setting yourself up for failure.  In this episode, I go on a bit of a rant (but a necessary one!) about the mindset that holds so many runners back. I've been guilty of it, you've been guilty of it, and the sooner we recognize it, the sooner we can fix it.  Ultra training is a long game, and if you're constantly looking for bursts of excitement to carry you through, you're in trouble. The athletes who succeed aren't the ones who feel inspired every day—they're the ones who put in the work, no matter what.  So let's strip it all down. Why do you think you need motivation? What's the real thought behind your resistance to training? Because if you can identify it, you can change it. And that, my friend, is how you create momentum that actually lasts.  Let's go.!

Visualization isn't just for elite athletes or woo-woo yogis. It's a practical, game-changing tool that every ultra runner should have in their arsenal. In this episode, we're diving into why visualization matters, how it works, and most importantly how you can use it to boost your confidence and crush your first (or farthest) ultra.  Let's be real: taking on an ultra is intimidating. It's a big, scary goal that lives miles outside your comfort zone. Sure, your training plan is key, but what's happening in your head matters just as much (maybe even more). That's where visualization comes in.  I'll walk you through four specific visualization exercises:  1. See yourself as the badass ultra runner you are becoming — because the identity shift is part of the process.  2. Picture yourself at the start line — calm, confident, and ready to roll (no pre-race freakouts allowed).  3. Prepare for tough spots on the course — so you'll know exactly how to handle them.  4. Visualize your epic finish — because the journey's end deserves more than a death march.  Visualization isn't magic, but it is the missing link between training hard and believing hard. Your thoughts shape your feelings, and your feelings drive your actions. So let's start thinking like the ultra runner you're meant to be.  Tune in for a fun, no-fluff guide to making visualization work for you. By the end, you'll know how to transform your mental game and go from “What was I thinking?” to “Hell yes, I've got this!”

I have been trying to get this lady on the podcast f-o-r-e-v-e-r!  Thankfully, she finally agreed and I know you guys are really going to enjoy this conversation.  I've been working with S'te for a year now and she's an amazing human.  She has served in the navy, raised 9 kids (and countless foster kiddos), and survived not one but 2 SCAD heart attacks....oh and did I mention that she's also run a bunch of ultras?!  Listen in as we discuss all this and more!

This week I wanted to bring you another My First 50k episode featuring my client, Jodi.  But we had a lot of technical difficulties and ultimately had to push that recording to later in the week.  This got me thinking about how we handle challenges (in life or in training) and how we often use the excuse: "I don't know how" or "I've never done that before" as a way to justify staying small and not going outside our comfort zone.  In this episode I want to share an analogy that will help you to find the motivation to keep going even when you think you can't.
