Some of our most inspiring guests come from referrals. Our friend Rebecca messaged us about Heather. They met during Vol State and Rebecca knew we had to chat with her. Heather is a mom, nurse, veteran and all-around bad ass. She has tackled some of the toughest races including the Leadville 100 and Barkley Fall Classic. What else can I do? That is the question Heather always asks herself after accomplishing big goals. On this podcast we talk to Heather about her trail running journey that started in 2020; how it evolved to 100-mile races and beyond. We also talk about how she trains, balances life, self-care and showing up for herself daily. Heather is full of inspiration and encouragement!

Huge episode tonight! A lot to talk about. Farley gives a run down of his experience running Mountain Lakes 100 over the weekend. We both are in awe of Tara Dower's accomplishment setting the overall FKT on the Appalachian Trail, it's truly impressive. We go over race results from Mountain Lakes 100. Then we talk about one of the icons of ultrarunning, Anton Krupicka, who came out of nowhere and took second at Grindstone 100. We go over the results of the other races at Grindstone. Also talk about the young gun Hans Troyer who ran Grindstone 100K and it was his first race since taking 10th at Black Canyon 100K, where he ended up in the hospital afterwards with rabdo. Unfortunately Grindstone didn't go his way and he ended up with a DNF. We then talk about a possible shady maneuver the first place runner did to block the second place runner during a sprint to the finish at Mammoth Trail Fest 26K which was a Golden Trail World Series Event with major prize money on the line. We also go over the results from Mammoth Trail Fest races, the Barkley Fall Classic, the Cowboy 200, Pikes Peak Ascent and Pikes Peak (not quite) Marathon. Max King and Hayden Hawks both had some success at events overseas. We go over results from Dances with Dirt (Hell, MI), Flagstaff to Grand 100, IMTUF 100, and there is a new self-supported FKT on the Colorado Trail. Finally we end the show with the breaking news / controversy about Camille Herron and her husband + coach Conor Holt who got busted editing the wiki pages of other elite ultrarunnners to make them look less significant and editing her own page to seem more elite. Another episode, another TUFF runner from the Raleigh area. This time, we're talking with Scott Perry, who is on a quest to find the toughest 50K in the U.S. He's run two of the three that are widely believed to be the toughest. Those are Quest for the Crest and Speedgoat. He's got the Barkley Fall Classic coming up later in 2024 as well.
Scott Perry seems to be just about everywhere. During his buildup for the 2024 Georgia Death Race, he has been seen running, hiking, rock climbing, skiing, pacing, crewing, sweeping a course, and maybe even mountain biking, usually with friends, some of which he probably just met that day. And following GDR, Scott is on a mission to find the HARDEST 50K in the US and is jumping in strong with races like Quest for Crest 50K, Speedgoat 50K, and the Barkley Fall Classic all on his 2024 calendar. Tune in to hear Scott's amazing stories, his inspirational passion for life, and why he loves the ultra community so much. Enjoy the episode! We continue to hurtle through Season 9. Join us in this episode for a ‘feature lengther'! Ye might want to make sure your earbuds are fully charged for our extended chat with this week's guest, the cultured Mr Ally McColl. You may recall Ally featured recently along with Graham Connolly (Season 9 Episode 4) to give us the lowdown on their Barkley Fall Classic adventures. Now it's time for Ally to go solo and have the floor to himself, he grabs it with both hands or as he might say himself ‘baithe tatties'. Ally provides us with a thorough look back at his running story, it's part podcast part biography as we delve into a blow-by-blow account of Ally's foray into the world of ultra running. From being a wet behind the lug novice, to mastering his race craft and transitioning into a competitive racer. That might sound a bit wanky, thankfully it's only yir show note scribe who is, Ally is anything but. Tales of a torturous first marathon, discovering the wonder of the trails and hills, finding pals with similar fires in their bellies and the good karma of volunteering ensue as Ally recounts his experiences. Ally's passion for running comes over loud and clear, his love of the area he calls home along with a drive and determination to batter his former self's performances. What did he do when racing was snatched away from him in the COVID years, sit on his arse and mope? Nah, this fella made sweet potato brownie and went for a few wee runs. He's achieved a lot in a short number of years, who egged him on? That often mentioned ‘mate at work' might just have played a part. Enjoy our full 90 min plus extra time with the exquisite Ally McColl! P.S. John and Stevie Boy have a wee ask, a regular and loyal listener to the show is currently undertaking a survey of ultra marathon runners and we'd love it if you took 15 mins to fill it in. This year four Floridians traveled to New York for the Great New York 100 Mile Exposition, also known as TGNY. Mark Cudak, Luis Cocco, Amy Rae, and Diane Romero-Lopez all got those belt buckles! The TGNY starts in Times Square and goes through Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Rockaway Beach, Coney Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan and Times Square. Mark Cudak got it done with a time of 22:12:01! He's done races like the Keys 100, Daytona 100, Lake to Ocean 100k, the Long Play, Colt 45, and the Long Haul 100. He's also the head Course Marshall for the Keys 100. Luis Cocco got it done with a time of 25:37:40! He's the Race Director for the Miami 100, Miami 50/50, Ride the Wave 50k, and the Co-RD for the Space Pirate 100. He's done some crazy stuff like completing the Lollipop 240 and his HERO 200 Mile. He's done races like the Daytona 100, Long Haul 100, LOST 118, Lake to Ocean 100k, Badwater Salton Sea, Pier 2 Pier 200k, and the Vero Beach Octopus 100. Amy Rae, the Banana Champ, she placed third overall for the females with a time of 23:04:30! She's done races like the Trident, the Sand Spur, the Barkley Fall Classic, the Keys 100, and the Pinhoti 100. Diane got it done with a time of 29:45:40. She is also the Race Director for the Monroe Cross Trail 50 Mile Ultra in DeBary! She's done races like the Long Haul 100, the LOST 118, Brazos Bend 100, the Yeti 100, the Pinellas Trail Challenge, and the Skunk Ape Night Run.
_[NOTE: Due to poor producer skills, this episode was nearly lost to time. But thanks to some more experience, better audio editing tools (Thanks Patrons!) and quite a bit of luck... I think something was able to salvaged here. Happy to be able to share the stories from this night with you. Sorry for any residual poor audio quality. It remains the fault of the producer and not the panelists!) _ Way back in 2018... Mort Nace and Medved once again gathered a distinguished panel of runners, assembled an interested community and provided a comfortable space for many stories to be told. Jason Vidmar, Michael Burke, Nate Huckle, Katie Ghidiu and Joy Valvano shared their running stories with us. From broken bladders, spontaneous 50ks, near death coaching experiences to professional outdoor parenting tips. Jason Vidmar's storied running career spans the peeks of Powder Mills Park, to the depths of the Barkley Fall Classic, around the hills of the Georgia Death Race and has left footsteps all over the Adirondacks. Trail Dad is always up for an adventure and often comes away with some entertaining anecdotes. Katie Ghidiu is fast. She has run a sub 5 minute mile (4:55), a sub 3 hr marathon (2:58) and a sub 24 hour 100m (2:39). She Ran cross country and track at Fairport HS and University of Notre Dame. With regards to trail racing she has a 3rd and a 1st at Ontario Summit Trail Marathon; A 1st place at Sehgahunda Trail Marathon, a 1st at Wakely Dam 55k, 3rd and 5th places finishes at Twisted Branch 100k, and sub 24 hour at her first 100 miler in Burning River 100M, 23:39. She is also an Adirondack 46er and likely has a lot of dirt on Nate Huckle. Nate Huckle is a running coach, a mentor, an ultrarunner, an ADK46er and a raconteur. Go on a run with him and he'll likely start telling you a story that before you know it, has held your attention for more hours and miles than you intended (or were willing) to run! Michael Burke has run more than 70 races in and around the Rochester area. While doing so he has found time to raise his family outdoors (not actually, but you know) and help found a charity that assists local families affected by cancer. Find Mike on the trails and he is more than likely to chew your ear off (again, not actually, but with like stories and jokes and stuff) Joy Valvano started running ultras back when it was considered crazy. More crazy than today. Her running consisted of often taking up road trip adventures with her running friends to races like Bull Run Run (10 times!!) and even 100 milers like Haliburton and Vermont. But her running isn't all in her past, Joy has recently run Twisted Branch 100k. Originally a runner for some alone time and a bit of fitness, Joy has found herself spending more and more (and more) time in the woods. Special Guests: Jason Vidmar, Joy Valvano, Katie Ghidiu, Michael Burke, Mort Nace, and Nate Huckle.

Andrea Casella Kooiman is an avid runner with over 150 marathon and ultra-marathons under her belt. Some of her accomplishments include the Boston Marathon, Grand Slam of Ultra-running (4 oldest trail 100's in one summer), Badwater 135 three times, Western States twice, HURT 100, UTMB, Vol State 500K, taking 3rd place overall. Andrea is also one of the founders of WeRock, a program created as a response to the challenges faced by the Orange County communities' young people. It is an educational, after-school, intervention program for Middle and High School students focused on the endurance sport of running. She is also the executive director and head coach; she considers some of her greatest running accomplishments watching as the kids cross the marathon finish line year after year. It is her solid belief that everyone can and will achieve all their wildest goals and aspirations if they can first visualize themselves in that position. She is on a mission to HUG the world and assist others in becoming their own Superheroes. Start asking yourself why not me. This is a question Andrea always asks herself and she has accomplished some amazing things. We loved talking to her about her adventures, coaching her kids and life in general. This woman is full of joy, optimism, and fun. We talked about the Barkley Fall Classic and moving on to attempt the Barkley Marathons (watch for her name). Andrea lights up when discussing WeRock, she talks about how it started and what she has gained from coaching. We also get into some great Badwater stories and how she balances everything from family life to the big races. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. IG- @runcoachkrun
Gary Cantrell also known as Laz Lake is the creator and race director of two of the hardest ultramarathons in the world, the Barkley Marathons and the Big Dog Backyard Ultra. He also created the Barkley Fall Classic, Strolling Jim 40, the Vol-state 500k, and the epic virtual team event, the Circumpolar Race Around the World. Gary is also a husband to Sandra who he met in college and a father to three grown children. Before retiring in 2011, he was an accountant for 35 years. Well, this was a whole lot of fun! In this episode we chat to Laz about the early ultra-running days, the inspiration for all his unique races, and his trans-continental walk across the US. Laz has some great Barkley Marathon stories to share. You are sure to learn a few things about the Barkley's you may not have known. We learn what Laz has planned next, the current Barkley theme, and how to get a Geezer hat. This one is full of great stories, encouragement, and lots more. Gary Cantrell aka Laz Lake is truly a legend in the Ultra-running world. We had the best time meeting him. Enjoy!
Jennifer was never an athletic kid, always picked last at PE, made fun of for her weight, struggled with body image and eating disorders in high school through grad school eventually gained a lot of weight in college, decided to start running her junior year and gradually worked up to her first 5k two years later, then ran her first marathon a few years after that. She ran on and off for the next 10 years and trained for her first ultra-distance. After having her son, she jumped back into running, but found out she had a torn labrum in her left hip, had surgery followed by a long rehab, eventually she switched to trails and ran more ultras including a 50 miler. Jennifer's transition into photography began when she met her friend Kristy through a FB group, started pacing her at Ornery Mule Racing events and took cell phone pics of her while at races. The RD would frequently repost her pics and eventually offered to hire her to photograph some races. Jennifer gradually took over photographing all of their races as well as some in other states. Health issues have prevented Jennifer from training for her own races, so this is a way for her to stay involved in the community. Jennifer has the most amazing attitude and the way she deals with setbacks is inspiring. We talk about Jennifer's ultra-marathons and the Barkley Fall Classic. We discuss her many injuries and how she always reinvents herself to stay involved in a community she loves. Jennifer's transition into photographing races is a great story. “It's never too late to go for a big dream – don't be the obstacle”. Jennifer is also a contributor to Silent Sports Magazine and Ultra Runner Magazine. @luoyunghwa
A month has passed since we set foot in frozen head, and I can't believe that I'm only getting this episode released that aside I'm super excited to introduce you to Kristi Pashia who was the first person in the Barkley Fall Classic to cross the finish line in the 50k and still manage to DNF. The cut off time is 13hrs 20min which reflects the Big Barkley, Kristi made it in an agonising time of 13hrs 20min and 9 seconds. We follow Kristi's interview with Brian Mueller who was the last person to finish the 50k in a crazy time of 13hr 19min 48 seconds, both runners made the decision point in 11hrs 17min with seconds between them and Kristi completed the last loop seconds ahead of Brian which shows that there really is a fine line between success and failure at the Barkley Fall Classic. There were only 107 finishers in the 50k from around 373 starters so a huge drop out, with 70 people making the titty marathon finish. Not long until the lottery is completed, so good luck to everyone who has their name in the hat, or should I say commiserations!
We are chatting with Doctor Ben Snyder, he was one of the Floridians who took on the Barkley Fall Classic this year with an epic story to tell. In the episode, we chat about psychology, performance, imposter syndrome, finding your why, and how it went down at the 2022 Barkley Fall Classic! Dr. Snyder earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2004 and completed a master's degree in Counseling from the Johns Hopkins University in 2008. He finished his doctoral training in Counseling Psychology at the University of Georgia in 2012. He has done races like the Barkley Fall Classic last year with a DNF, the Wy'east Trail Fest in Mt. Hood, and the Gateway 50k. The Barkley Fall Classic is designed to give the runner a taste of what the Barkley Marathons is all about. It contains all the elements; beautiful trails thru the rugged Brushy Mountains, surprising new elements to the course every year, with the course map not revealed until the night before the race, numerous hard climbs and descents (including some of the signature hills that have made the Barkley a thing of legend), and a very personal challenge to face down the demons that wait for us at our very limits of endurance.
The Barkley Fall Classic is one of the hardest 50k's in the country and it is designed to give the runner a taste of what the Barkley Marathons is all about. This year Melody Diehl, Scott Hoover, and Cole Bataille were among the Floridians who showed up to Frozen Head State Park! Melody has done races like the Tahoe 200, Gate2Gate, and the Sand Spur and she crossed the finish line at the Barkley Fall Classic at 12:23:57! Like Melody, this was Scott Hoover's first time at the Barkley Fall Classic! He completed the course, however, DNF'd with missing the cut-off by the time he made it to the finish line. He's done races like the Sand Spur, the Trident, the Skunk Ape Night Run, Skunk Ape's Revenge, and Quest for the Crest. Cole crossed the finish line with a time of 13:02:50 for his fourth finish at the Barkley Fall Classic! He's previously run the BFC in 2020, 2019, and 2017. He's won the 50k at the Sand Spur in 2018 and 2019 and recently won the Trident - Ridge to Nowhere this year back in July. He also won the 2019 Dunes 100 and still has the course record with a time of 21:24:41!
Tori Kendra, John Goldfield, Chris Shearon, & Paula Shearon each lined up at Frozen Head State Park on Sept. 17, 2022 to try to earn their respective Lacroix at the Barkley Fall Classic. Hear each of them describe their experience as they take us step by step through the course. I can't believe we have been off air for over six months, super excited to have the show back and we have some amazing guests lined up to keep you motivated. None more amazing than this week's guest Andrea Larson who became the first female to podium in the Barkley Fall Classic this year, retaining her title from the 2021 event. Andrea is fast becoming one of the best female ultrarunners on the circuit, having won the first back yard that she entered with an incredible 162 miles, which added to her 100 miler podiums in 2021. She has a strong background in adventure racing and is an extremely focused runner who puts the effort behind the performances, let's hope Laz gifts her the opportunity that she so desires.
This year at the Tahoe 200, several Floridians took on the challenge of coverage this years out and back course. I'm chatting with Melody Diehl, John Becker, and Justin Yonker! John and Melody finished 21 minutes apart (96:29:25 and 96:50:19) with Justin taking the great achievement of holding the 2nd to last finisher spot with a grand total of 99 hrs, 15 mins, and 30 seconds of the 100-hour time limit! Melody has done races like the Sand Spur, Long Haul 100, Iron Horse 100k, Gate2Gate, and Death at Depuis! John and Justin are also no strangers to the distance and mountains. John has done races like the Lake to Ocean, the Trident, Quest for the Crest, the Georgia Death Race, Barkley Fall Classic, and the Jacks 50k! Justin has done the Cruel Jewel, Long Haul 100, Ancient Oaks, the Javelina Hundred, and some awesome DNF's at the Bear 100 and the Hell Bender 100! This crew is in it for the challenge! The Tahoe 200 is the first and only 200-mile single loop mountain trail race in the United States on a typical year, however, this year it was an out-and-back due to wildfires and forestry recovery. This course this year was still upwards of over 31,000 feet of elevation! You also still get to see the clear blue waters of Lake Tahoe and run through the aspen meadows, rock gardens, powerline roads, and long ridge lines with stunning views of Lake Tahoe. There is even a section of supposedly evil garden gnomes!

We have a great episode for you this week with local lad 'Ireland' Graeme Black who finally gets to realise a dream as he takes part in the 2022 Barkley Marathon. Graeme is no stranger to the Frozen Head Park in Tennessee as he'd raced there in the Barkley Fall Classic however this time he returns to compete along side some of the worlds most inform Ultra Runners in the main Barkley Marathon event. I'm not going to introduce the race as I'm guessing you all know it by now, but if not check out the race that eats its young on Youtube where you'll find some great footage on the race and more importantly race director Lazarus Lake. John decided to run his first ultra, The Barkley Fall Classic, back in 2017 and hasn't looked back since! Ultra Signup will show you how he's completed nearly 100 races over the past 5 years and an insanely busy race schedule this year, but it doesn't tell how much heart this amazing guy has. Now 42, John, as with so many of us, enjoys both the physical and mental benefits that come along with running and has used it to get through some challenging points in his life. In this episode, he shares with us the "WHY" and what keeps him motivated to never rest on his laurels and challenge himself each and every day!
Here is my interview with ultra runner and coach Peter Mortimer. Peter most recently won the HURT 100, he has podiumed in such races as the Cocodona 250, the Georgia Death Race, the Barkley Fall Classic and the Bigfoot 200. He has ran internationally in Asia and Europe including running UTMB. Peter discusses his journey into running and how changing up his nutrition was almost an instant game changer. We talk about his his day at the Barkley Marathons and his upcoming race at Western States. Here is a link to his coaching site 8 More Miles: https://www.8moremilescoaching.com
Today I am chatting with Scott Hoover. Recently this year he completed the Long Haul 100 Mile, a race that he honestly wasn't sure he was going to be able to accomplish. He then smashed some redemption at the Skunk Ape's Revenge 60k from bonking at last summer's Skunk Ape Night Run 30k. He's new to ultra running, but one of the friendliest faces you'll meet out on the course! Next up for Scott, he'll prepping for the Long Play Trail Run, Quest for the Crest, the Barkley Fall Classic, and the Trident 12 Hour! Listen in as he also drops some hidden gems for trail running in the Lake Wales and Frostproof area!

Welcome to the Lace Up and Run Podcast. We believe in a fun and active lifestyle with a primary focus on running and hiking. There is a supply of bourbon in the podcast studio so there is pretty much a guarantee there might be some of Kentucky's finest consumed during the show.Love having Morgan Davis on the show. There is always so much running information to uncover, but not enough time to get to it all. Morgan talks about her experience at the No Business 100 in the Big South Fork Recreation Area. Despite the technical terrain and over 14,500 feet of gain, she finished 5th overall female. Morgan ran the Cloudland Canyon 50K two months after No Business. The race is held in Georgia and despite navigating 4,500 feet of gain, she accomplished a 8th overall female finish.Morgan and I went back a few years and talked about her experience at the Barkley Fall Classic at the famed Frozen Head State Park. Morgan will be tackling the very difficult Pinhoti 100 in November. "Only recommended for very experienced adventurers" is all that needs to be said. What powers Morgan through these ultra races? My guess is it must be the Fireball!Website: runtosucceedsports.comFacebook: @runtosucceedInstagram: @runtosucceed
Melissa Guillen is quiet determination personified and a true marvel. In September 2020 Melissa stopped fighting gravity and decided to have hip surgery. It required a lengthy and difficult recovery that tested Melissa physically, mentally, and emotionally. She had plenty of low moments along the way but eventually found herself ready to resume running. Before she did so she took the bold step to start signing up for races. And not any old race, some of the most well-known ultramarathons in the country: Lake Sonoma 50, Barkley Fall Classic, and the Javelina Jundred 100. True to form, Melissa not only made it to starting line but excelled. She topped it off with a excellent performance in a stacked field at Javelina. You can checkout Melissa's first appearance on the show in 309 (It's under her maiden name, Melissa Danehey).
You better believe I've got another inspiring guest for you today! I used to see him at all the races in the Midwest, and I've seen him at races out here in Colorado as well. His name is Matt Bartz and most recently, he ran the Superior 100 and set a personal record for himself. Then, just a week later, he went out and experienced the Barkley Fall Classic and of course, he finished that race as well. Of course, he's another one of those humble guys that you practically have to beg to come on the show. He's run over 70 ultramarathons and he's super passionate about what he does. https://youtu.be/yXkgRoQbuUI Lift Heavy Run Long #212 got us back together and back on track after an extended break. We were fortunate enough to have our friend Derek Baker be willing to sit down and visit with us. Derek is a 20+ veteran of the Navy and spent a great deal of time in the bodybuilding/powerlifting space before a youtube video got him to thinking about what it would be like to run an ultra-marathon. Derek committed himself to running an ultra-marathon before he had even complete his first mile. He, admittedly, did not have any idea what he was doing and just decided to hit the bricks and start running. Derek signed up for a 50K and in 5-weeks had dropped almost 35 pounds and was carrying significantly less weight than his previous 250lb frame was use to carrying. Ever since his first ultra, he has been on a tear. Derek has finished 2- 100mile races (one of which was on a treadmill!). Just last week he completed the Barkley Fall Classic and has more races coming down the pipes. Often described as the humble and "PG" version of David Goggins, Derek's intensity, focus, kindness and humility are some of the things that make him such a jewel in the trail-running community. I am sure that you will enjoy our time that we spent with Derek just as much as we did!! Thanks for tuning it.

Welcome to Episode 3 of S.C.U.M of the Earth! In this Episode Matt and Alex chat with Shannon Howell about the Barkley Fall Classic (in honor of the Barkley Marathons taking place recently) and injury prevention and recovery. Shannon and Alex are both rehabbing from injuries so we thought that this would be a good time to discuss things that we have done to stay injury free or how we recover from injuries when they come around. A short background on Shannon: Shannon started running for fun to stay fit in 2007 after having her second child. She has always been athletic but never considered running as something other than useful for staying in shape. She started getting serious about running and training about 10 years ago, eventually training for her first 50K in March of 2014. She would go on to run her first 50 miler later that year. Since then, she has competed in distances from 5K to 100 miles. *Disclaimer: Nobody on this podcast is a doctor by any means so the information presented is based upon our experiences. If you have your own injury, we recommend you consult a doctor or whoever you trust to guide you on the right path to recovery.

Endurance News: PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETES ORGANISATION COMMISSIONS FILMNOVA TO PRODUCE GLOBAL BROADCAST OF THE COLLINS CUP 2021 LONDON, ENGLAND: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) today announced that it has commissioned outside broadcast specialists, FilmNova, to deliver live coverage of the PTO’s flagship event – The Collins Cup on 28th August at the extraordinary x-bionic® sphere in Šamorín, near Bratislava, Slovakia. They will work alongside multi award winning director, Martin Turner, who will head the broadcast team as Executive Producer. The Collins Cup is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and aims to create and leverage the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon to attract a wider fan base. The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols. A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley. The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event. ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again. The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis. The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment. “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.” What's New in the 303: How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances. Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide. Episode 81 is another interview the enigmatic Lazarus Lake. Laz (real name Gary Cantrell) is an endurance race designer and director. His unusual races include the Barkley Marathons, Big's Backyard Ultra, Barkley Fall Classic, and The Vol State 500K. In 2018, he walked across the United States, starting in Rhode Island and ending in Oregon. This year he organized the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee (#GVRAT), which started on May 1st and ended four months later. During that period (123 days), the more than 19,000 participants - from all over the world - averaged over 5 miles per day to run (virtually from their hometown/country) a total of 635miles / 1021km, and so crossing virtually the entire state of Tennessee. I first met Laz at the 2018 Barkley Fall Classic, then again at the actual Barkley marathons in 2019. As you will find, he is a very interesting guy and lots of fun to talk to. This week's episode is with athlete Chad Spring. Chad has competed in a variety of races around the country over the last few years. Recently he's taken on Ultra Spartan Races and various ultra marathons including the Never Summer 100k in Colorado and the Barkley Fall Classic in Tennessee. I met Chad on a run a year ago and last weekend he invited me to join him for part of his extra badass Saturday Spartan Race training which consisted of 19ish miles of powering up steep trails by his house and 2 miles of carrying an 80lb bucket of sand. It was .....insane. After joining him for part of the workout I sat down with Chad and chatted about all things Barkley Marathons (one of the most difficult races in the world) and 50k, preparation and balancing training with life, Ultra Spartan Races, and his experience competing in the Never Summer 100k (a race I'm tossing around as a potential 2018 goal race). I hope you guys enjoy this episode! Definitely check out the Barkley Marathons documentary on Netflix, it really is my absolute favorite documentary in the last few years. It's called "Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young". Also be sure to check out the rest of our episodes on iTunes or Soundcloud. https://youtu.be/mAYfGb0hcKI What's today? It's PODCAST DAY! It is one of my favorite days. It is a day that we get together, and do anything but take ourselves too seriously. We have begun doing an almost weekly podcast, and I have to say that it has been one of the more fun and interesting things that I have ever participated in. This week we had one of my really good friends, and a guy who I have the utmost respect for, Brian Williams. Brian sat down and talked with us about how he got started in running, and some of his most recent adventures. Brian is as good at running as he is being a good friend, husband, and father. He shares with us some of his stories from recently finishing the Zane Grey 50 Miler to participating in the Barkley Fall Classic. If you are a running fan, you will want to hear as Brian discusses how he achieved the level of success that he has earned through running. Thanks for tuning in! Peace, Love, and all things Beef related, Beefcake
