TGF 016 Israel Keyes: Uncovered

True Crime Odyssey

In this episode of Uncovered, Brian takes a deep dive into one of the most chilling and elusive serial killers in American history: Israel Keyes. Unlike most killers, Keyes didn't fit a mold. He had no consistent victim type, no clear geographical pattern, and no obvious motive—just a methodical obsession with control, secrecy, and chaos. He traveled across the U.S., burying kill kits years in advance, and waited patiently for the right moment to strike. The result? A trail of victims with no obvious connection and a case that baffled investigators for years.Brian explores:Keyes' carefully constructed double life as a family man and small business ownerThe shocking contrast between his outward persona and his inner compulsionsThe FBI investigation that unraveled his secrets after the abduction of Samantha KoenigThe disturbing confessions Keyes made before taking his own lifeAnd why law enforcement believes there are many more victims we may never identifyThis episode isn't just about the crimes—it's about the terrifying precision with which they were carried out, and the questions Keyes took to the grave. If you're into true crime that digs into the psychology, the strategy, and the aftermath—this one's for you.Listen now, and stay sharp.

After 13 years and working with 400+ martial arts school owners, I share my refined vision from helping school owners break the 100 student barrier, to 300, to $1M revenue per year. IN THIS EPISODE:The three-part framework to attract, convert, and retain students for long-term growthWhy most martial arts school owners struggle with marketing—and how to fix itA new lead follow-up engine that automates engagement and increases conversionsThe one overlooked strategy that can increase school revenue by 20-30%How to scale without burnout while maintaining a balanced personal and professional lifeAnd more INVITATION: If you'd like more info about working with me in Partners, Just message me ‘Partners' on Facebook and I'll send the details over in a doc (no sales call required)Send MessageTRANSCRIPTIONToday I want to take you through my plan to help 100 martial arts school owners scale from 100 to 300 students and help 10 martial arts school owners scale to 1 million dollars in annual revenue. I'm going to go through the whole plan. I'm going to take you through this google doc and I'm probably going to go a little off script just to give you a bit more context around how the story evolved, what got me here, what brought on this plan and all the rest. So, I'll start at the semi-beginning. 13 years ago I discovered martial arts at my five-year-old's first martial arts class. I'd never been to a martial arts class, and didn't know much about it. I saw the movies. All that I thought is, you know, for me as a first-time parent, what a great activity this looked like for my child to get into. And I was watching this class and to me the only words I could find to describe it was personal development in the physical form. I was seeing these kids stand six feet tall, disciplined, confident, and I thought wow these kids are learning like life-changing skills and it's all disguised as fun and they don't even know it. And that moment in hindsight was a life-changing impact for me which brought me to this life-changing journey. So I started helping the school where my son was training with lead generation. This came about completely not on purpose. I actually bumped into one of the instructors at a kid's playground where my child was playing and got talking to the instructor and learned what they were doing. And this was the first time I sort of got some insight just on how the business was running etc.And my marketing brain kind of just triggered a few ideas and I thought look I know a few things that could definitely help you guys. I'd love to come and share what it is. And so at this time in my life I was deep into the trenches of online marketing.I was doing Google ads. I was mainly running online affiliate type products. Doing Google ads to landing pages and emails and I'd gotten a little bit of success. My biggest aha moment was being in Australia at the time and selling to someone in the United States that I've never met and they bought my product and I said oh wow this the possibilities of this are endless. I know it's common now but at that time it wasn't that common. Anyway, the school was already successful.

Good Sunday morning to you,We have a pot pourri of offerings for you today. First, I posted the above sketch on Twitter yesterday and it struck a nerve. I thought you might also enjoy it on here. It's eight years since I recorded it, but it is still as apposite as ever.In other, more serious news, I met with Campbell Smyth, Chairman of Fitzroy Minerals (FTZ.V), yesterday, and we have a long old chinwag about the state of the mining and metals markets. You can listen to that interview here or on your podcast app:Trees of LifeAnd, finally, my buddy Mark O'Byrne, formerly of Irish bullion dealer, Goldcore, got in touch about his new and rather beautiful coins: Trees of Life, they are known as, and they are available in both gold (0.1 oz and 1 oz) and silver (silver 1 oz). He sent me a couple of the silver ounce coins to review and they are really rather beautiful. Here is a pic:Let me help out a mate and give them a little plug.On one side is the Tree of Life, a symbol, common to many religions and mythologies, not least Celtic and Nordic, of balance, fertility, wisdom and strength. On the other side is the Rising Sun, symbolising dawn, a new day, new beginnings and the end of darkness. There is the Harp, Éire's sacred musical instrument and national emblem. (Ireland is the only nation in the world that has a musical instrument as its national emblem - bet you didn't know that). And there is the Tri Spiral. This spiral is carved onto a large stone at the back of the tomb of Newgrange, one of Ireland (and indeed the Earth's) oldest and most sacred places, thought to pre-date both Stonehenge and the Pyramids. You can find out more about these coins, likely, I would have thought, to become collectors' items at Tara Coins. With St Patrick's Day little more than a week away, these should make lovely gifts. Thought For Today

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Monday morning, the 22nd of January, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to 1 Peter 3:10-12:"He who would love lifeAnd see good days,Let him refrain his tongue from evil,And his lips from speaking deceit.Let him turn away from evil and do good;Let him seek peace and pursue it.For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."We have got to watch that tongue! If we want to see good days we have to stop speaking death. We have got to start speaking life. "But God…!" You have heard me say that many times before. When someone says, "There is no hope for this place", you say, "But God…!""These young people, there's no future for them." But God…!""The weather is not good anymore." But God…!God can change anything. The other day, I was sent a clip from one of my spiritual sons who was having a Mighty Men breakfast, getting ready for the Mighty Men Conferences this year, and the boys were wearing T-shirts and on the T-shirts were two words, "But God…!"Jesus is against evil, critical, negative talking, but His eyes are open to the prayers of the righteous. You know the old saying - is the glass half full of water or half empty? Well, it depends on who is talking about it. Our altitude is determined by our attitude. That is why I love to be around young people. They are so refreshing. They are so positive, they have vision, they have faith, they have a relationship with a living God. You see, everything is new and exciting for them. They don't question God's Holy Word, they just take it and believe it and they act upon it. Zachariah 4:6: "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' Says the Lord of hosts." They take the word of God literally. I spoke to one of my young grandsons this past weekend, and I started speaking about vision. He is finishing university and he has got his whole life in front of him, and as I started speaking to him about vision and about the fact that we can do anything if we will just believe in the God of Heaven and Earth, if we just believe in Jesus Christ, my own faith was encouraged by speaking to him about the possibilities that God has for a man who is prepared to trust Him.Today, trust the Lord, watch what you say and your life will be transformed. Jesus bless you and goodbye.

Did you know that you can plan momentum into your future? It refers to creating a strategy that gains momentum over time through consistent execution and reinvestment. The key to an effective flywheel is identifying the core driver that will propel it forward, like the guest experience for a short term rental business. But once you know the core drivers, you also need to be mindful of how you're feeding the flywheel for continued growth, such as reinvesting profits.Bobby Herrington, Pastor, Ultra Marathon Coach and STR business owner, joins Mark today on the show for part 1 of a series on Leadership and the various ways in which it affects your business and life.Tune in to understand how developing a strategic flywheel plan tailored to your specific goals and strengths is key to achieving sustainable success. Pastor Duane Brooks emphasizes the significance of worship as more than just singing, focusing on presenting oneself as a living sacrifice to God. We give ourselves to God in worship. The pastor contrasts the attitudes toward Jesus, highlighting Herod's pretentiousness and manipulation, and emphasizes the importance of recognizing Jesus as the central figure. He reads from Matthew 2:1-12, outlining the story of the Magi seeking Jesus and their recognition of him, drawing parallels with prophecies about the long-expected Jesus and the expectations of the people of Israel.Throughout this message, Pastor Duane Brooks challenges the audience to consider their response to encountering Jesus as a king, emphasizing the joy and significance of seeking and beholding their king, drawing parallels with the Magi and the importance of worshiping in the presence of God.Quotes:George MacDonald: They were all looking for a King to lift them high; thou cam'st a little baby thing that made a woman cry.T. In a kingdom the king expects obedience instant and full.In the Bleak MidwinterChristina RosettiIn the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,In the bleak midwinter, long ago.Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficedThe Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,The ox and ass and camel which adore.Angels and archangels may have gathered there,Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,Worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am?If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. To discover more messages of hope go to tallowood.org/sermons/.Follow us on Instagram, X, and YouTube @tallowoodbc.Follow us on FaceBook @tallowoodbaptist

What if there is a possibility of tapping into a heightened awareness of the world around you and your place in it? A possibility of moving from an achievement orientation, where so often the questions center around what do I want and how can I  get it?To a more expansive, open and receptive way of relating to our experience as human beings? Today's guest will is Dr. Lisa Miller. She's a psychologist, a scientist, and a professor at Columbia University, and in her extraordinary book The Awakened Brain, she explores these questions and ideas in-depth. What she will reveal in this conversation (and more thoroughly in her book)  is that humans are universally equipped with a capacity for spirituality, and that our brains become more resilient and robust as a result of it. Through her wonderful storytelling (which you will hear a lot of today) she will offer profounds insights into the surprising science of spirituality, and how to engage some of the lessons from her groundbreaking work practically in our lives.Today's conversation is deep, wide-ranging, and may be the most personal I've had on the show yet.In the first half of the episode: Lisa will share some of her story of trying to have a child. She will openly  describe many of the struggles  her and her husband faced with infertility, and a most unexpected, but beautiful turn of events that led to ultimately adopting their son. I will also share some of my own story of being adopted, as well as the challenges my wife and I  faced with having a child of our own. From a planned perspective this interview went off the rails as we shared our stories back and forth for the first 25 minutes or so, and you'll hear us laugh about that later in the conversation, but as Lisa so aptly reminded me many times - so often plans can go awry and letting them do so, by loosening the grip of trying to control things, is actually a step toward awakening. In the latter part of the interview you'll hear more about:The two modes of awareness (achieving and awakened awareness) that Lisa has mapped in our brains through her fascinating work in neuroscienceHow to tap into awakened awareness and be in dialogue with your lifeThe many ways of knowing (logic, empiricism, mysticism, and intuition) and the validity of them allHow adversity can often be the doorway to growth and transformation. The role of spirituality in medicine, clinical treatment, and healing A guided meditation she's used with thousands of people. If you'd like you can participate yourself during the episode. Or if you'd prefer to do the practice later you can find it here: Practicing Courage #15: Being in dialogue with your lifeAnd more!More about Lisa:Lisa Miller, Ph.D., is the New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. She is the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology. Her innovative research has been published in more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Miller speaks and consults around The Awakened Brain and The Spiritual Child for the US Military, businesses, personal development, faith based organizations, schools and universities, and for mental health and wellness initiatives. Welcome to Episode 30 of First Principles! We recorded this episode at Spacebot Studio, a new, sleek space overlooking the metro in IndiranagarOur guest, Ritesh, was already at the studio.Ritesh was asking the owners of the studio a bunch of questions: how big is this space? How many bookings do you get in a day? Are there other studios around in this location? And it's not surprising, because our guest for this episode is Ritesh Agarwal – the Founder and Group CEO of OYO. This even came up in our conversation. The rest of us saw a wonderful studio, but Ritesh saw a space with the potential to be utilized and monetized. He sees the world differently – as founders often do. For example, Ritesh explains how he sees the hospitality industry – in fact, the entire of India – as a space with a supply problem. The solution, he explains, is not in increasing or decreasing supply. It's in utilizing it. Changing the supply quality altogether. And if you go back and look at how Ritesh OYO was conceptualized and built – at age 19, by the way – you'll realize that this is the foundation of his business model. Across the conversation, his lens of the world became sharper and sharper. Ritesh answers all of my questions with very specific models and frameworks that he uses – but he's not the guy who leaves it at that.He breaks them down. He offers examples from his life, the journey of OYO and even from books he's read. And it makes sense because the first thing Ritesh says that he loves great questions!Across this episode, we also talk about:Why Ritesh loves being called the Chief Clarity OfficerWhat is OYO's unbeatable strengthThe three ways in which young folks can learn from the school of lifeAnd why Ritesh wears his naivety on his chestWe now have chapters available for this episode on Spotify and Apple!
