POPULARITY
In this episode of the ‘All Things Endurance' Podcast, host Rick Prince chats with David Callahan, Co-CEO of Ultrasignup. As the leading event registration platform for ultrarunning events, David has a unique perspective on the state and growth of ultrarunning. Some of the topics that Rick and David discuss are:1. Could you tell our listeners a little more about your background, both professionally and athletically?2. The popularity of ultrarunning is through the roof, what are some of the key factors that you believe are driving this popularity?3. Within the sport of ultrarunning and based on Ultrasignup's data, are there specific distances that are seeing above average growth?4. Where do you see the sport of ultrarunning over the next 5-10 years?5. Athletes within sports like gravel racing and climbing often resent the result of their sports becoming more popular and mainstream – do you think this is, or will be the case with ultrarunning?6. In the same vein as the prior question, popularity often comes with large organizations looking to purchase events. Is there a concern amongst the ultra community that the acquired events will lose their identity? 7. For someone that is looking to get into ultrarunning, do you have any advice in regard to what type of ultra to choose as their first ultra event?8. We often hear from our ultra coaches that running ultra's are addictive. While it's also true of road running, it seems to be more the case with ultra's – why do you think this is?Where do you see ultrasignup in the coming years?

Resilience-"the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness" Anne George is, to me, is the definition of resilience. I feel as if she may disagree, but I could see it and hear it when we spoke. First of all, she is a phenomenal runner. If you take a glance at her UltraSignup, it is documented that she has participated and completed 46 truly tough races, and she has been on the podium for 36 of these. Not to mention, she was standing on the very top for 20 of these. I mean...come on! Completely insane and impressive. You HAVE to be resilient to push through and be so successful in these races. But, she is also resilient in life. Most recently this became apparent as she watched, from her front door, Hurricane Helene flood and devastate her hometown of Old Fort, NC. She and her husband, Clint, live right downtown, but their home was fortunately just high enough to not be flooded. After the waters receded, her resilience kicked in and she and Clint rolled up their sleeves to help in whatever way that they could. Now, she will be running for 24 hours at the Old Fort Strong Endurance Festival to raise money for her beloved town. Thank you, Anne, for the person you are and for finding the time to sit down with me. Laurie Matecki is another one of those runners who if you haven't heard of her, you've probably seen her at a race at some point. With over 150 results on Ultrasignup, Laurie is everywhere all the time. One of her most recent finishes is the Buckeye 200, which was her first 200 mile race (although she's done Vol State and HOTS).
Chris Rice got his start as an adventure racer and has since racked up more than 90 events on UltraSignup. We were lucky enough to shake hands with him recently at the Loopy Looper 100 miler where we witnessed his sub 24 hour finish , teaming up with prior guest Michael "Gagz" Gagliardi to tough out the last 3 hours of the race. And to hint at the grit this guy has, the Loopy Looper was just 10 days after his 4th Badwater 135 finish. He is now preparing for the 153 mile Spartathlon on September 28, and then The Arizona Monster 300 in April 0f 2025. Rebecca Scott is a fighter! A quick scan of her UltraSignup will definitely show that she's tough, with a podium finish in 12 of the 27 listed events, but what it won't show you are the obstacles that she has had to overcome to get here. Because the truth is that life is not always fair, and adversity is not evenly distributed, but she is a glaring example that even in the face of overwhelming odds, we all have the power to persevere. And in her case, to share extra positivity with those around her. Her goal at every ultra is to bring a smile to someone in the race, Because, in her own words, “You have no idea what someone has struggled with, and if you can bring a little light to their darkness, you are doing well.” So plug into to hear her inspiring story, why her kids had to kick her out of the car at Mile 80 of the Rocky Raccoon 100, and what type of race she swears to never do again after a recent, hard fought DFL experience. In the latest heart-stirring episode of HappyCast, join Stephanie as she takes on the formidable Copper Kings 100, an awe-inspiring mountain race crafted by ultra-runner Wes Plate. Set in the picturesque town of Butte, Montana, this race is not for the faint of heart—marked by its "fatass" style, it challenges runners with no aid stations and no course markers, demanding resilience and raw endurance.Central to this episode and the race itself is Butte's towering landmark, Our Lady of the Rockies. This 90-foot statue of the Virgin Mary, perched atop the Continental Divide, stands as a beacon of hope and perseverance for the runners. Conceived as a tribute to all women, especially mothers, the statue overlooks the city from over 8,500 feet above sea level, embodying the spirit of community and undying faith. As Stephanie navigates the unmarked trails of the Copper Kings 100, the imposing silhouette of Our Lady of the Rockies serves not only as a literal landmark guiding her through the night but also as a metaphorical guide through the challenges of the race. With Richard at the helm as crew and Shashi setting the pace, the episode delves into the trials and tribulations of nighttime navigation, the unexpected hurdles after the sun sets, and the mental battle that ensues deep into the endurance test.Through candid storytelling, Stephanie explores how the serene yet formidable presence of Our Lady of the Rockies inspired her to push beyond her limits. The episode also teases the future of the Copper Kings 100, questioning whether it will retain its grassroots "fatass" charm or evolve into a more commercialized race. Listeners are encouraged to stay tuned to Ultrasignup for updates on this unique mountain challenge.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Melissa Londry ran her first 50K back in 2015, but it was during COVID that she really got warmed up, knocking out her first 100 miler as a virtual race and then completing an astounding 45 UltraSignup events since Feb of 2020, which doesn't even include other monster efforts such as the 240 mile Tridge to Bridge which is an unofficial and unsupported race in Michigan that she completed in 2023. She is currently gearing up to take on the Massanutten 100, another round of the Tridge to Bridge 240 in July, and then our recently spotlighted Mamba 100 in November, which looks like an absolute blast. So plug in to hear us chat about her experiences, her training, and what prompted her to take over Race Directing duties for the New River 50K, which just so happened to be her first ultra finish back in 2015. Family! That's what this race, the Loopy Looper, feels like to us. We have had 6 of our previous guests run this race at some point and all have talked about it in some way, shape or form. So, we figured, it is time for us to get to know the Race Directors themselves. The race itself has 12 hour, 24 hour, a 100 mile and a relay option for those looking at different formats. The race is held on a 3.75 mile loop on a paved path around Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The course is mostly flat and you will run as many loops of it as you can/want in the time allowed. According to the race website, this is one of the fastest looped courses in the country and a great chance to put in some serious mileage. Take a few minutes to learn more about this incredible race, the Loopy Looper from co Race Directors, Jen Gaynor and Pete Greenfield. Loopy Looper Info: Registration for the Loopy Looper is open, the race is 8/3 at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ, and new for this year the Glow Up Night Loop - 1 lap of Cooper River at 10pm. As we enter 2024, (how???) we began to realize that the world has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Our data guru, Matt Abbott, decided to take a look back at 10 years of USU stats. He reviews the growth of the sport, which distances are the most popular, and who is running and where. We'd love to hear from you. What is your experience in trail over the past 10 years? Do you have a favorite race or distance? Have you seen your local races growing? Are there more local races! Send us an email to trailhead@ultrasignup.com.
Co-host Jeremy and Coach Eve take on the inaguaral Dirt Circus in Phoenix. This UltraSignup event includes a race series and the chance to visit with run industry leaders and vendors. Phoenix runners shared their thoughts on the Arizona trail and road running scene in this special live recording!

Hello friends, and thank you for listening. Today's episode details my experience being part of the biggest Hallowe'en ultramarathon dance party in the desert... the Aravaipa Running's Javelina Jundred presented by Hoka. I did a lot, met a lot of cool people, and have so many more fun memories of driving trucks, pounding T-posts, setting up tents and passing out belt buckles. It's the first time I've been at a race and NOT been at an aid station. Want to join us next year? Check out the Javelina Jundred website, Facebook page, Ultrasignup and the other events put on by Aravaipa. Signup starts January 1, 2024! Remember... Arizona is AWESOME! This week on the HappyCast, we learn that the the ‘K' is NOT silent and are joined by the up-and-coming social media running truth teller and comedian, Michelle Knafla, better known as “FuelMyRun” on Instagram. We poke fun at anything and everything, including her UltraSignup account. Did she even know she had one? As a road runner that has dabbled in some trails, we pick her brain as we stroll through this fun and carefree episode, all while trying to convince her to frolic through some trails after (hopefully) doing the Boston Marathon. We also learn about some of her creative processes and what it takes to frequently put out content. Also, will Michelle end up pacing Andrew at one his races next year? Just think of the hilarious content she could create just from that! Michelle is also a running, fitness, and marketing coach, so check her out sometime.Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Introducing a running podcast for people who think running podcasts are stupid. This is an ultrarunning comedy podcast instead. So if you are looking for inspirational or deep, thought-provoking content, you will probably DNF your next race just from listening to this. Dom Grossman and Andy Pearson host this monthly variety show with guests who are probably too famous to be on it, totally worthless advice call-in segments, and other dumb jokes designed to make you shoot gel through your nose. Reluctantly presented by UltraSignup.

This is the recording from our FB Live Interview on Wednesday September 28, 2022 with Lee Connor and Karmell Ohlrogge! Lee and Karmell are seasoned ultra runners who are making an incredible impact on our sport! It'll take you a while to scroll through each of their UltraSignUp results as both Lee and Karmell have completed over 100 events combined (and that's just UltraSignUp!). After we got the backstory on each of their running journeys, we spent the rest of the interview chatting about The Women's 100 Miler Project that Lee and Karmell created. The Facebook Group has over 600 women! Read on to learn more about this incredible group: "EMPOWERING WOMEN IN ULTRARUNNING! The Women's 100 Miler Project Started as a low budget grassroots video project where we follow five women on their journey to their first 100 miler over the course of a year, under the training and guidance of established ultrarunner Lee Conner, in an effort to get more women interested in running 100s. In launching this project it became abundantly clear, however, that there's no shortage of women WANTING to run 100s, there's a shortage of women with the confidence to commit to or begin training. One of the biggest things holding them back was being overwhelmed with the conflicting information out there, and not knowing where to start. We decided to open up the training to all women, not just those in our video project. Our mission is to streamline and simplify information and training, in a supportive and encouraging environment, in order to facilitate making a 100 miler an achievable goal for as many women as possible." https://thewomens100milerproject.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/268691585272178

We talk all things running that someone new to trail running and ultra running might need to know, including some of the differences between flatland running and mountain running. Newton also recently moved to Boulder, Colorado, so we discuss some of the differences in running culture and training. We also talk patience and pacing, which are perhaps the most difficult aspects of distances beyond the marathon, known as an "Ultra". This might include popular 50k, 50 milers or 100 milers, or beyond! We also discuss the difference between time and distance goal events, including the Florida-based events: Tick Tock Ultra, Croom trail races, and of the Long Haul (100 Miler), Daytona 100! We finally talk about nationally known races such as the goal race for many ultra athletes: "Western States", the Leadville 100 Miler (which he ran in 2019), and his upcoming Moab Arches Ultra. To be sure, mountain training has been a huge adjustment for Newton, but one which he revels in as he clocks thousands of miles in elevation some weeks in Colorado. You can follow Newton @newtscootandboogie on Instagram, and check out his recent adventures and upcoming ones on Ultrasignup! Please message us @runninganthropologist on Instagram or Facebook, or you can send us a message in the comments section at our website: www.RunningAnthropologist.com —Until then, hope to see you on the road and trails, and Happy Running!

Where do we begin with Beverley Anderson-Abbs? Her 198 trophies on UltraSignup gives you an indication of what type of athlete she is but during our chat we narrowed it down to some specific races that really put her name out there. We discuss how her knee injuries almost kept her off many a start line, about her early days as an adventure racer and experiences at Eco-Challenge and Primal Quest and her 4 top place finishes at Western States 100. Not to mention her grand slam attempt, and of course The Barkley Marathons, and her latest win at The Last Annual Heart of the South Road Race in 2020; a race that is 326 miles in length. We are so excited to have Michael Wardian back in the house today; we first sat down with Mike in 2016 for episode 25, where we talked about relentlessly pursuing passion and pushing the limits of what has been made possible. Mike is an international shipbroker, speaker, coach, business owner, dad to two boys and two vizslas, Rosie and Bash, and of course, a very well-known ultra runner, which almost feels too blah of a descriptive for this guy. His resume on UltraSignUp dates back to 1998. Anyone who knows of Mike never seems to be surprised at his FKT attempts, robust race schedule, or solo adventures like his Guinness book world record attempt for the fastest known time for a marathon in a highland dress. Still, I have to say, his win at last year's Quarantine Backyard Ultra was one of the most epic challenges I've witnessed, thanks to social media. It was a virtual race that started with over 2,400 runners from more than 50 countries. It ended over 60 hours later with only two runners left, Mike and Radek Brunner, who missed the start of the 63rd lap, making Mike the winner after 422 kilometers of running. As I said, the resume is massive, and we're super pumped for you to listen in and hear what he is relentlessly brewing up for the future. In this episode, we discuss: - winning the quarantine backyard in 2020 - FKT for the run across America - coming back from injury - injury as an opportunity - grow incrementally and stay consistent - do weird things that you wouldn't normally do - limiting yourself because you don't want to learn something - mental game crossover of ultra running and chess - perspective on engineered nutrition for racing - pickleball training for a high altitude ultra - unique challenges of a graduate-level 100-miler - running on the moon Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free. Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated. Namaste- Jess

Katie Ghidiu won the last race from the “before” times. Before a pandemic ended running and life as we know it. Before masks were cool and 6 feet of distance meant losing a race by less than a second. She won the Last Runner Standing put on be TrailsRoc in early March...and went out with a bang finishing with a 7:00 mile after hours on a snow-packed trail. Katie was a recruited walk-on for Notre Dame, meaning she was on the bubble of getting into the school and onto the team. She ran with a local runner some may know, Molly Huddle. She ran at nationals and went to regionals for the steeplechase. Her mile PR is a smoking fast 4:54. In this episode, Katie walks us through the college running experience. She really enjoyed having friends and being part of a team. Her coach helped foster a healthy team environment providing a good example and encouraging good role models. She does say she felt burned out most of college and maybe overtrained for her level. The Notre Dame women really liked to hammer and no one pulled them back. After college, Katie took a bit of time off competition and ran occasionally for a number of years. She always knew she'd be back and in 2012 she trained for and ran the Wineglass marathon in 2:58. A few more years of inconsistency followed until friends convinced her to sign up for the first running of Twisted Branch. She got third that year, in 14:40. Katie is a librarian and in this episode she and Ellie geek out on books, their favorite authors and more. They talk Twisted Branch from a racers perspective. Katie gives the inside details on a team with Molly Huddle and what training with her was like. Finally, they discuss running and working in a pandemic. Katie was scheduled to run GDR and the Wineglass marathon but will not be competing in those, rescheduled, virtual or not. Check Katie out here: UltraSignUp

In this episode we speak with ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter -winner of the 2019 Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc -the most prestigious trail ultramarathon in Europe. She has also finished first at the Tahoe 200, Western States 100, Moab 240 and many other ultras. And in the quick tip segment you will hear about nutrition strategies for building muscle and promoting recovery. Interview with Courtney Dauwalter photo credit: Scott Rokis PhotographyWe are thrilled to get a chance to speak with Courtney Dauwalter -a runner we have admired for some time. Courtney describes herself as an “ultra runner with a love for sunshine, long inseams, and candy.” Since 2011 Courtney has won 38 marathons and ultras according to UltraSignup, 13 of these races she was the 1st place overall finisher beating all the men! Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc In September she won the famous Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, considered to be the World Cup of ultra running. Over 2,000 of the top trail runners in the world toe the start line. This 106 miles race starts in Chamonix, France, and runs through the Alps (total elevation gain of 32,940 feet), crosses the boarder into Italy, then Switzerland, and back to Chamonix where thousands of cheering spectators and media welcome the champions. Courtney was the first place female with a time of 24 hours, 34 minutes and 26 seconds finishing 1 hour ahead of 2nd place. photo credit: Courtney Dauwalter, InstagramTahoe 200 We also talk about the 2018 Tahoe 200 which is a (you guessed it) 200 mile race around Lake Tahoe -the largest alpine lake in California. Runners must cover the distance in 100 hours (4 days). Courtney did it in 49:54:36 and was the 1st place female finisher (and course record holder). She slept a total of only 21 minutes of the nearly 50 hours of running. To get a sense of the “pain cave” see this video by Salomon Running. Up Next Courtney will be competing for team USA in the 24 Hour World Championships in France. This format requires runners to rack up as many miles as possible on a 1 kilometer loop in 24 hours. The highest distance wins. Also competing for team USA will be Camille Herron (current world record holder), Katalin Nagy, Megan Alvarado, Gina Slaby, and Pam Smith. Follow Courtney on social media here: Instagram | Twitter | FacebookAlso Mentioned in This Episode The Revel Kulia Marathon in Hawaii. This will be Angie’s final marathon in her 50 state quest! Still time to sign up for the race and meet us there. Angelo Poli, metabolism expert and founder of MetPro, joined us to answer the question, “Are there nutrition strategies for building muscle and promoting recovery?”. Since November Angie has lost 31 pounds and got her marathon time back down to Boston Qualifying level using the MetPro system. Visit www.metpro.co/mta for a free consultation call.Shout Out! Today I ran the Medieval Marathon in Kilkenny, Ireland. My goal was to just run and enjoy being in another country. To my surprise, I ended up getting a PR by a few minutes. I came through the finish around 4:19:15, and my previous PR was 4:21:45, and this course had 900ft more of elevation gain compared to my other PR! . . . I spent the second half of the race in the pain cave, but I couldn’t help but revel in the fact I was running in a most beautiful country. I have to give thanks once again to MTA and Coach Chris for getting me inspired and all trained up to PR even when I wasn’t having the best day! -Emily The post Exploring the “Pain Cave” with Courtney Dauwalter appeared first on Marathon Training Academy.
