Andy Gale is the founder, executive director, and president of the board of Bay Area Recycling for Community (BARC). BARC is a non-profit organization that aims to keep things out of the landfill by filling in the gaps where the community may not have the ability to recycle something. Andy hopes that someday someone will put BARC out of business because everyone else in the community is getting it done. The main question people ask Andy is what they recycle, and he answers that they recycle everything.In this conversation, Andy explains that their organization fills in the gaps where the community might not have the ability to recycle certain items such as couches or construction materials. Their goal is to eventually not be needed anymore if everyone else in the community is getting it done. Andy also discusses the experimental process of recycling and finding downstream markets to take recycled items. Ryan asks about the typical questions Andy receives about recycling, and Andy explains that there are no bad questions when someone is trying to learn more about recycling.

Angie Sanchez, MBA, PhD candidate from Michigan State University joins The Pursuit Of... to discuss The Nooni Project. The Nooni Project will conduct a needs assessment and implement breastfeeding programs in six Indigenous Tribal Communities in Michigan. Over 150 Indigenous community members will be trained and certified as Indigenous Breastfeeding Councilors to bring breastfeeding back as a ceremony to their communities. In addition, health care workers and other community members will be trained on how to best support breastfeeding in their communities. Breastfeeding as a traditional ceremony was lost as a result of colonization and will, therefore, be brought back as a celebration of Indigenous Culture and Maternal, Infant, and Family Health. Most importantly, breastfeeding will help future generations of Indigenous children to thrive in Michigan and beyond. Set Aside Convictions — Move On In Your Life: In April 2021, Michigan enacted the Clean Slate Law to help those with criminal records seek expungement through the legal system. The law will help people find better jobs, qualify for housing and higher education loans, and give peace of mind that past mistakes are no longer a hinderance. Brett Fessel, River Ecologist, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians Natural Resource Department and Frank Dituri, Director, City of Traverse City Department of Public Services join to discuss the Boardman/Ottaway River Ecosystem Restoration. This is a major project involving the removal of three dams and modifying the lower barrier to prevent invasive species upriver while allowing native fish to pass. The project is a collaborative effort from entities and stakeholders on the Federal, Tribal, State, and Local level.The Boardman/Ottaway River is located in Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties in Northwest Lower Michigan and includes 160 miles of river and tributary streams.
