[05:25] Understanding Emotional Intelligence Angie emphasizes the importance of consideration as a core aspect of emotional intelligence. This involves being aware of one's own emotions and those of others, recognizing that everyone is part of a shared environment, and using this awareness to guide actions. Angie suggests that the lack of emotional intelligence has significant implications for the world. She compares emotional intelligence to a language one learns to speak, noting that individuals with low emotional intelligence may struggle with handling adversity and managing their emotions. [20:20] Curiosity as the Key to Emotional Intelligence Angie highlights the importance of curiosity as a foundational aspect of emotional intelligence. Individuals create space for questions by cultivating curiosity and allowing others to express their emotions. Mastering the role of the observer, which begins with curiosity, enhances empathy and facilitates a shift from reacting to situations to responding. [27:20] From Struggle to Strength: Angie's Journey Angie shares a personal journey of transformation, highlighting how she went from a high-achieving, disciplined individual to someone struggling with depression and binge eating. Through her experience of hitting rock bottom and undergoing a process of rebirth, she gained profound insights into psychology and personal development. This journey ultimately led her to discover her passion for coaching. [36:00] Navigating Purpose & Empowering Others Having high emotional intelligence can help individuals figure out their purpose and make decisions with clarity. Angie's personal experience motivates her to help others who may be going through similar struggles. She recognizes the importance of equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge to understand and manage their emotions, especially during periods of identity crisis. [42:30] Understanding Emotional Traps & the Law of Attraction Angie discusses how individuals can become trapped in certain emotional states, such as grief, which then perpetuate feelings of shame and guilt. By constantly focusing on negative emotions, individuals can inadvertently magnify them, shaping their perception of reality. This proces influences one's vibrational frequency and attracts similar experiences. [46:00] Perception's Power: Uncovering Subconscious Influences Angie emphasizes the critical role of perception in shaping every aspect of one's life, including health. She suggests that disease can originate from one's perception, which is influenced by subconscious programs. Understanding these programs is essential for uncovering outdated beliefs that may be holding individuals back from living fulfilling lives. AND MUCH MORE! Angie Sanchez, MBA, PhD candidate from Michigan State University joins The Pursuit Of... to discuss The Nooni Project. The Nooni Project will conduct a needs assessment and implement breastfeeding programs in six Indigenous Tribal Communities in Michigan. Over 150 Indigenous community members will be trained and certified as Indigenous Breastfeeding Councilors to bring breastfeeding back as a ceremony to their communities. In addition, health care workers and other community members will be trained on how to best support breastfeeding in their communities. Breastfeeding as a traditional ceremony was lost as a result of colonization and will, therefore, be brought back as a celebration of Indigenous Culture and Maternal, Infant, and Family Health. Most importantly, breastfeeding will help future generations of Indigenous children to thrive in Michigan and beyond. IT IS OK TO BE A HOT MESS. Welcome to another solosode! It is Nina's turn to share a little bit about how much being a "hot mess" is not accepted not only in society but in Nina's own little world. Much like Natassia, this little dialogue was also inspired by a conversation she had with her coach, Angie Sanchez. Nina wants to flip this idea on its head and thus, shares how she has turned to be a hot mess into something successful, beautiful, and transformative. Some of the things Nina discusses The negative root of being a hot mess How this root led her to build a facade preventing the hot mess situation from happening Redefining what being a hot mess means and how being vulnerable is BEAUTIFUL Have you struggled with being a hot mess? We have all been there but it is in this season we grow SO MUCH. You're not alone on this journey and it is perfectly ok to be your most vulnerable self here with us at BYNT. You know where to reach us... we'll be there for you boo! We discuss 3 of our new intentions / commitments we’re taking on in 2021.
How often have we sat in our regrets of choices we made, paths we pursued or didn't pursue, and opportunities we walked away from? I for sure have sat in these regrets for WAY TOO LONG. In this episode of my solosode, I walk through my regrets and how they colored my way of thinking and ultimately, what I felt to be failure. I have convinced myself for many years that my regrets are failures but it was not until recently I was able to look at regret in a different light. [1:46] A Special Thank You. Giving some credit to my girl Angie Sanchez for inspiring this solosode. She was the main inspiration to help me change my view of regret. [3:06] Bye Bye Julliard. I begin my regret journey with one of my earliest regrets: turning down my audition for Julliard to pursue engineering. [5:04] The Childhood Dream. Often in my journey, I get reminded of my childhood dream of being a Nat. Geo explorer. This was first recognized during my second year of college in an Anthropology Class. [6:30] Our Lovely Friend Fear. Being inspired by my anthropology class, I felt compelled to connect with that department in my school but before I even talked to anyone, I was paralyzed by the fear of leaving engineering and disappointing others. [9:25] New York Bound. After yet another sign pulling me back to what I loved, I head to New York to pursue my Master's in Historic Preservation. Even here, I discuss my third regret in turning down opportunities that were more aligned with my love for archeology. [11:12] The Kicker. In recounting my experience of regret in pursuing an engineering path, I have learned to make peace with this path as a means to transcend my skills into something GREATER. [12:47] How to Transcend. I know turning regret intro transcendence may be easier said that done. Below are some ways you can do this: Get to the root of your decisions Think about the WHY behind the regret Ask yourself, what false narrative does this regret represent? Are you equating regret with failure or something else? [16:36] Regret in Relationships. Though I discuss mainly my regrets in my career, I touch on the regret of carrying baggage into my relationships. [17:34] Propelling Yourself Forward. I discuss that at the end of the day, once we transcend our regrets, it aids us into being better versions of ourselves. You know where to reach us. Sending you a lot of love. THE STORY OF FORTRESS NATASSIA. Solosode time! We're bringing you a new episode format here at the BYNT podcast… because, let's be real, life has been hectic and your two besties have not been able to record together! This episode, I want to tell you a story about Fortress Natassia. A fortress that I built myself, to protect myself from ever getting hurt. These so-called emotional walls that stuck with me for most of my 20s. [1:25] Building My Fortress. I discuss the beginnings of my ‘emotional walls' and the reason I started building Fortress Natassia. My fears of experiencing any of my triggers and being hurt. Deciding who could and could not enter - and how much they could even see behind the walls. [4:10] No Man Shall Pass. Men were definitely not allowed behind the fortress walls. I discuss how these walls prevented me from having any sort of deep or serious relationship. Access to my deepest thoughts or secrets? NOPE. [7:07] Fortifying The Walls. Anytime I allowed anyone further in and got burned, I fortified the walls of Fortress Natassia. Anyone who came afterwards would be impacted because it was harder to get in. [8:25] The Destruction Of Fortress Natassia. The beginning of the end to the emotional walls. I talk about meeting Ben, my boyfriend, and how he helped me slowly bring down the walls. The sirens started RINGING as soon as I started to develop deeper feelings. Admitting to myself that this fortress wasn't doing me any favors. Realization that I just need to TRUST. Embrace the uncertainty and have faith. [14:18] The Beauty In The Destruction. The positive side of tearing down emotional walls. Realizing how the fortress was impacting ALL of my relationships and making me cynical. I had built this facade to come off as this STRONG and that no one could take me down… when it was just armor because I was so scared of getting hurt. [16:50] The Last Room Of The Fortress Standing... The whole reason that the fortress was built in the first place. My depression. I locked it away and hid it deep inside Fortress Natassia. The hardest part of the fortress to tear down. Letting go of the shame. Finally getting a chance to heal. [22:00] The Problem With Emotional Walls. We're preventing ourselves from connecting with others when we have . “To be human is to also be in relationships, not just with others, but with yourself” - Angie Sanchez. You can't run away from pain. It's ok to feel pain and sadness and anger. You have to trust others, but we also have to trust ourselves. You will be able to overcome anything if you have faith in yourself. You cannot live life to its fullest if you're constantly shielding yourself from others. I hope this story resonates with even just one person. If you've built your own Fortress, maybe this story can help you realize it's time to tear down those walls. It may take time, but you can persevere through anything. You know where to reach us. Sending you a lot of love. Listeners, this week we're back with Angie Sanchez' story. Angie was born and raised in Sonoma Valley as the oldest of 7 children and proud daughter of Mexican immigrants. Coming from a low income, mixed immigration status household she experienced firsthand the struggles and inequalities that many Latino families continue to live with today. At a young age, she understood that to overcome discrimination and inequalities we needed to ensure that Latinos have a place and a voice. That experience led to her commitment to non-profit work for more than twelve years focusing on enhancing the Latino economic, cultural, and civic leadership that reflects the population of the Latino community in Sonoma County. Most recently Angie was awarded the 2019 North Bay Business Journal Latino Leadership Award and North Bay Young Professionals 'Ones to Watch' for 2020.Currently, Angie has been working on building a foundation to amplify and deepen the voice of Latinos through civic engagement. With the support of the Latino Community Foundation, she created a game called Censotería which is based on the popular Mexican game Lotería. The game was designed as a creative initiative to teach about the upcoming census in an educational, fun, and culturally relevant way. The game is now being used as part of the outreach strategy by other Latino led organizations all over California and other states to educate predominantly Latino immigrant communities about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, attending live music concerts, and BBQing with family and friends. This episode was recorded as the pandemic began. I want to thank you for supporting the previous episode for non-Black Latinx and how to talk about race with your kids and family. I am continuing to educate myself to continue to show up with content that can help us dismantle our own racial biases. I want to do it with respect to our Black brothers and sisters and our Afrolatinx community also.Dismantling our own racial bias will take work and I understand one episode is not enough to complete our work. The work must continue on and offline, when the protests are happening on the street and when people decide to go home. At Cafe con Pam we are committed to standing by our core values: Community, Freedom, Curiosity, Impact, and Integrity. This show began with the purpose to amplify Latinx and People of Color. One big thing I learned being a journalist is that everyone has a story and no one escapes life without pain. I’ve probably interviewed well over 1500 people throughout my career, ranging from farmers, to a past president, to crime victims, to criminals, and celebrities. Regardless of status, income level, nationality, or education level, they all had a story and every story included some level of pain. If we do the inner work and process this pain, we can use it as fuel and inspiration to make a great impact on others. If we chose to lay down and play victim, then what did we go through all of that pain for? I’m eager for you to meet Angie Sanchez. She spent years in a religious cult and after escaping she did the deep healing work, now she helps guide others to awaken into who they are meant to be. Angie Sanchez is an Integrated Nutrition Health Coach. This is going to be a slightly different episode, because Angie is not in the real estate space, but works with a lot of people who are. She talks about her four life pillars and how to bring each of these different aspects into alignment so that you can start feeling better and living better as well as how you can practice empathy with yourself and others. Faced with her own set of health challenges in her early 20s, Angie understands all too well that you truly have nothing if you don't have your health! Key Takeaways: This is a masterclass all about communication and connecting with people. Who is Angie and how did she get started? Angie's purpose and objective (both personal and professional) is to leave others feeling better than when they first arrived to see Angie. When you're authentic, the situations that are simply not right for you will naturally fall off your radar! How does Angie define EQ? If you're able to practice empathy at a high level, you have a high EQ. How do you practice empathy? Public speaking used to be Angie's biggest fear, but by changing her perspective, she has since been able to get over that. What kinds of clients does Angie work with? If you're too general in your message, you will have a harder time working with the right person. What makes you unique, different, special? Angie shares some life audit recommendations to help you gain perspective and see where you're lacking in your life. Don't compare yourself to another person. Do what's right for you. Work on a rhythm that's right for you. What does Angie's morning routine look like? Angie shares her thoughts on intermittent fasting. Knowing what Angie knows now, what would Angie tell her 20-25-year-old self? Who is Angie Sanchez? Angie is a truth junkie, movement enthusiast and certified health coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. She runs a program called True You which helps her clients feed their bodies with 'primary food' to fuel their success. Angie's primary foods may not be what you would expect at first. Her focus with her clients is feeding them the appropriate emotional foods through relationships, physical activity, career and spirituality to live the lifestyle they desire. Why did I bring Angie onto the show? I brought Angie onto the show because when we talked prior to the podcast she told me about a concept called bio-individuality. Bio-individuality is the belief that we should be treated as a unique human being rather than a generic blueprint. Too many fitness programs, diets and even medical treatments apply the same generic techniques across the board as opposed to creating specific unique treatments for each person. Having Angie on the show was an opportunity for her to share more about the deep dive she conducts with her clients and to share with us how we can connect deeper with ourselves to identify which areas could use more love in our lives. What will you learn? About the principal of bio-individualityThe 4 primary foods: career, relationship, physical activity, spirituality and how they impact our livesAbout the two choices we always have in lifeAngie's journey to becoming whole and how being whole is important to all of usHow getting to the core of yourself leads to true healthWhere men are currently struggling and why Angie's clientele has shifted to mostly menWhy vulnerability is powerfulThe importance of empowering self-talk and asking empowering questionsAbout Angie's transition from the corporate world to coachingThe importance of gratitude and appreciationHow to reframe failure The One Habit to Takeaway Ask your self empowering questions. It's easy to get lost in our own negative self talk. In the podcast, Angie gives a list of dis-empowering questions she hears her clients ask: Why am I such a loser?Am I ever going to figure this out?Why am I a piece of shit? We may not be in control of our thoughts but we can certainly ask ourselves empowering questions anytime we catch ourselves in a negative loop. It's our job to halt the negativity and focus on the positive: What one step can I take right now to believing in myself? What one thing can I do in this moment to move this project forward? What can I do right now to change my mood from being down to energized and uplifted? When we take responsibility for our minds, we take responsibility for our lives. Know that you have the power to change and that power lies within.
