Mormonism has been stereotypically conceived of as a patriarchal, heteronormative religion, from its past polygamy to its male-only priesthood. But what happens if you apply a queer studies lens to the faith? This task was taken up by Kalamazoo College's Chair of Religion Taylor G. Petrey in his recent book, Queering Kinship in the Mormon Cosmos. On today's episode of Scholars & Saints, Dr. Petrey discusses the results of such an analysis with host Nicholas Shrum, focusing particularly on deep relationships of care known as kinship. From considering the gendered inter-relations of the Godhead to the role of Heavenly Mother, Dr. Petrey seeks to open up the world of Mormon theology to consider new cosmologies for underrepresented people groups. To find out more about Dr. Petrey and his upcoming projects, click here.

[RE-POST FROM MAR. 3, 2021]In this podcast, Jen and Zsofia talked to Rebecca Tonietto, assistant professor of biology at the University of Michigan-Flint. Rebecca is a pollination ecologist, who got her start with Ann Fraser's entomology course at Kalamazoo College. She then worked as a research assistant on melon pollination in New Jersey where her interest in pollinators began. She is a native of Michigan and has found her way back to the Flint area after going to graduate school at Northwestern University where she worked - among other things - on pollinators on roof gardens. Podcast: Play in new window | Download Subscribe: Email | RSS | More "A culture of encounter is something we have to be very intent on practicing, and so I'm excited about an economics that creates many of those opportunities for encounter." -Elizabeth Barlow IN THIS EPISODE In the latest episode of Messy Jesus Business podcast, Sister Julia Walsh FSPA chats with Elizabeth Garlow, economist and cofounder of the Francesco Collaborative, which invites individuals to critique economic structures and invest using their whole spiritual selves. Elizabeth discusses her early Capuchin influences and her interest in Focolare. "I had a sort of hunger to have a different kind of conversation about who we are as human beings," she says, "how we meet our needs, what kind of systems can we create?" Sister Julia and Elizabeth talk about the damage that can be done by our current economic structures. "Our economic structures are intertwined with problems of disconnection and loneliness," Elizabeth says. Elizabeth also discusses the challenging ways we can move forward to help create a more just world. "Money in many ways is energy, " she says. "It's flow. She co-founded the Francesco Collaborative, which was in part inspired by the kinds of spaces she longed to be a part of as an investor: one that invites us to show up as our spiritually rooted selves, with deep vulnerability, care for one another and a commitment to critique the structural problems of our economy and dream about our role in its transformation. Through her work, she supports protagonists of transformation drawing on lineages of faith, spirituality, and wisdom to ask questions like: “what is enough?” and “what does a practice of finance and investing fit for the needs of our time look like”? These questions are in part drawn from her formation in the Focolare Movement's Economy of Communion initiative, where enterprises seek to embody a relational economy paradigm. Elizabeth previously co-led impact investing for the Lumina Foundation, served as a policy advisor with the Obama Administration, and co-founded a Detroit- based organization, Michigan Corps, to invest in local entrepreneurs through crowdfunding and innovative forms of patient capital. She studied political economy at Kalamazoo College, completed her graduate work in public policy and economics at Princeton University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in 2019. Elizabeth lives in Michigan, where she is enjoying getting reacquainted with Michigan's Great Lakes and apprenticing with urban farmers in Detroit. — The natural world benevolently embraces all who show it care and respect. The rivers, forests, and meadows love to hear our laughter. The birds, butterflies, and flowers appreciate our admiration. The fire gladly transforms our pain, while the ocean blithely supports our rebirth. So don't hesitate to deepen your relationship with the many aspects of nature. They are here for us as allies and mentors, joyously teaching through their very existence. May your fire burn brightly and show you the way. May the earth be soft and fertile beneath your feet. May your water flow freely and quench your thirst. May the winds lift you through the air to the place beyond time. And may the rays of the sun warm your heart and illuminate your soul. Valeria interviews Liz Beachy Gómez — She is the author of “From the Depths of Creation: A Nature-Based Path to Healing.” Liz Beachy Gómez is the founder of Ewassa, a nature-based healing practice in the Rocky Mountains outside of Denver, and author of From the Depths of Creation: A Nature-Based Path to Healing. Liz's passion for the natural world blossomed when she discovered Brazilian Orixá-based spirituality in her early twenties. She learned to work with the elements of Fire, Earth, Water and Air in ceremony and meditation, and through rituals of healing and celebration with the various aspects of each element. After several years of practice, Liz was initiated as a daughter of Iemanjá (the ocean) through the Templo Guaracy of São Paulo in 2003, and served as temple coordinator in Haiti and the Dominican Republic for seven years. Liz is an international public health professional and energy medicine practitioner by training. She holds an undergraduate degree in psychology and anthropology from Kalamazoo College, and a Master of Health Sciences (MHS) degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed her training in Andean (Q'ero) shamanic healing practices through The Four Winds Society in 2018. After ten years living overseas in West Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, Liz returned to the U.S. to raise her children while juggling a demanding career. A health crisis eventually spurred her to renounce her public health career in 2017 and return to nature in search of healing. The nature-based framework she teaches today was born of her personal healing journey, her love for the Brazilian Orixás, and her energy medicine work with clients and groups. Liz is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese and can offer interviews or workshops in any of these languages. For many, resilience grows with age — building as they endure challenges and learn from experience. However, some people, like MacKale McGuire, have had to embrace it since birth. Born with Hemophilia, a rare blood disorder, MacKale was used to frequent doctor appointments and hospital visits throughout his childhood. However, at the age of 11, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma — a bone cancer that, after grueling chemotherapy and surgeries, led to the amputation of his left leg. With these obstacles stacked before him, MacKale could have become discouraged. Instead, he became determined. Now a cancer-free collegiate athlete at Kalamazoo College, MacKale joins Benjamin to discuss how the resilience he gained through handling Hemophilia helped him battle osteosarcoma, why focusing on showing kindness can be a guiding light when in a dark place, and what advice he would give to those facing life-altering challenges. Everywhere we turn, human beings seek to define who is and who isn't part of the community of God. But the promises that Christ embodies often go one step past what feels comfortable for us. Even the very human Jesus sometimes encounters this discomfort, as he did when he rejected the Canaanite woman. Fortunately, she believes so deeply in the promises of God that she refuses to allow human categories to keep her daughter from a miracle. There is an extended metaphor here, if we have eyes to see it, about God's love being a spiral with no end, rather than a tightly drawn circle of who belongs and who does not. Our scripture reading is Matthew 15:10-28.Our guest preacher Rev. Today I talked to Andy Mozina about his new novel Tandem (Tortoise Books, 2023). An economics professor at a Michigan college is struggling through a bad divorce, having a tough time with his only son, and then, through hardly any fault of his own, he must avoid getting caught by the police. He only had one extra beer and it was late and foggy outside, plus the two college kids were biking out of the entrance to the deserted beach, instead of the exit, without a headlight, so was it really his fault when he hit and killed them? Also, couldn't he do more for the world and right his wrongs, if he was still teaching and making contributions, than if he was stuck in jail forever? Mike will do anything to avoid being caught in this moving novel about the lengths a person will go to avoid facing uncomfortable truths. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Andy Mozina majored in economics at Northwestern, then dropped out of Harvard Law School to study literature and write. He's published fiction in Tin House, Ecotone, McSweeney's, The Southern Review, and elsewhere. His first story collection, The Women Were Leaving the Men, won the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award. Quality Snacks, his second collection, was a finalist for the Flannery O'Connor Prize. His first novel, Contrary Motion, was published by Spiegel & Grau/Penguin Random House. In this mind-bending episode of The Art of Move, we dive into the incredible world of quantum and circadian biology with the brilliant Carrie B (@carriebwellness ) As a college athlete, supposedly at the pinnacle of health, Carrie began suffering chronic joint issues and insomnia. After her first child was born, she developed debilitating stomach pain, adrenal fatigue, and brain fog. Armed with a BS in Biology, an MS in Nutrition, and certifications as a personal trainer, massage therapist, and breathing coach, she still couldn't find the root of her issues. That's when she found quantum biology. Now, as an online educator, clinician, and faculty member of the Quantum Biology Collective and Kalamazoo College, Carrie's mission is to teach her clients how to create a healing environment by applying quantum health strategies around light, water, electrons, and mitochondrial support. Given these tools, clients who have spent years trying to improve their health—just as Carrie did—finally experience powerful healing and lasting benefits. NBA – 2023 NBA Finals – (best of seven) Tonight Game 5 Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets, 8:30 p.m. (DEN leads 3-1) NBA – Nuggets try to avoid letdown with 1 win to go for team’s first title Everything from the history books to the way they’ve played through most of the postseason suggests the Denver Nuggets are on the verge of capturing their first NBA title in 47 years in the league. The goal now for Denver is to avoid a letdown against the Miami Heat in what will be the first title-clinching opportunity in franchise history. The Nuggets are trying to keep their minds on hoops, not that trophy, and the mission could be helped by the fact that Miami’s only win in this series came a week ago in Denver. Also, the Heat have won seven road games during the postseason. NBA – Conor McGregor knocks out Heat mascot in bizarre promotion at NBA Finals Former UFC champion Conor McGregor knocked out the Miami Heat mascot in a midgame bit that went wrong. The man who plays “Burnie,” briefly sought medical attention Friday night after taking two punches from McGregor during a third-quarter stoppage of Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Heat and the Denver Nuggets. The Golden Knights have shown all playoffs and throughout this series that they are championship-worthy. NHL – Status of Tkachuk is biggest question facing Panthers down 3-1 in Cup Final The status of leading scorer Matthew Tkachuk is the biggest question facing the Florida Panthers down 3-1 to Vegas in the Stanley Cup Final. Tkachuk left for a stretch during the third period of Game 4 because of an undisclosed injury. Hendriks was placed on the 15-day injured list before the team’s 6-5 loss to the Miami Marlins. Left-hander Tanner Banks was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Hendriks made his major league return from cancer when he pitched an inning against the Los Angeles Angels on May 29. The 34-year-old right-hander is 2-0 with a save and a 5.40 ERA in five appearances this year. The Heat said Saturday that the employee wearing the flame costume, who was not identified, received pain medication and was resting at home. NHL – 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Finals – (best of seven) Tuesday Game 5 Florida Panthers at Vegas Golden Knights, 8:00 p.m. (VGK leads 3-1) NHL – Golden Knights try not to think of Stanley Cup returning to Vegas on verge of title The Vegas Golden Knights left Florida on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup. The trophy will be in the building the next time they play. That’s back at home in Game 5 of the final on Tuesday night against the Panthers. But the immediate task at hand for players and coaches is not to dwell on how close they are to the franchise’s first title. Coach Paul Maurice said any of his injured players would be treated before and after flying to Las Vegas for Game 5. Florida would make history by becoming the first team in 81 years to erase a 3-1 deficit in the final. NaLyssa Smith scored five straight points for Indiana and the Fever led 77-72 near the five-minute mark, she also finished with 29 points. WNBA –Mercury make travel ‘adjustments’ following airport incident with Griner Phoenix Mercury coach Vanessa Nygaard says the WNBA team will adjust its travel plans following Saturday’s incident in the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. Nygaard would not say what changes will be made, citing league policy and safety concerns about the team’s future road trips. Brittney Griner’s teammates say they were startled when a “social media figure” confronted Griner at the airport. Airport officials eventually escorted the team’s players to a different room with more privacy. The league says it approved charter flights to all road games this season for the All-Star after she returned from detainment in Russia. Golf – Nick Taylor wins Canadian Open, first Canadian champion since 1954 Nick Taylor became the first Canadian in 69 years to win his national open, holing a 72-foot eagle putt on the fourth playoff hole to beat Tommy Fleetwood in the RBC Canadian Open. More than likely the most important legislation the Congress will pass this year or this session is the multi-year fam bill that is projected to cost $1.5t over the next 10 years. A significant component of farm bill leg is Title IV that addresses nutrition assistance, namely the Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP) that serves 42 million Americans, including one in every four children. SNAP benefits were expanded during the COVID pandemic. As of two months ago however expanded SNAP benefits expired. Presently Congressional Republicans are looking go cut SNAP funding by weaponizing the debt ceiling vote. (Listeners may recall I discussed SNAP policy with the CBPP in March 2020.) During this 30-minute conversation Ms. Bergh begins by providing an overview of current state of hunger and food insecurity. She proceeds to discuss the recent “food cliff” resulting from sunsetting expanded COVID emergency SNAP benefits this past February, discusses House Republican's April debt ceiling legislation that included cuts to SNAP programming and what SNAP reforms advocates are proposing. We conclude with comments regarding SNAP participation, the Biden administration's hunger conference last summer and pledge to end hunger and diet related-diseases by 2030 and the current state of the farm bill's legislative process. Ms. Katie Bergh is a Senior Policy Analyst on the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPPs) Food Assistance team. Prior to joining CBPP, Ms. Bergh worked as a Senior Policy Advisor for Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME), where she managed her work as a member of the House Agriculture Committee and House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and related agencies. Previously, Ms. Bergh spent six years as a staff member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry under Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), where she handled the committee's work on domestic and international food assistance programs for the 2018 farm bill. Ms. Bergh holds a BA in Biology from Kalamazoo College and an MPP from the London School of Economics and Political Science. As an example of the CBPP's latest SNAP reporting, see this May 9th document: https://www.cbpp.org/blog/roundup-analyzing-house-republicans-harmful-debt-ceiling-and-cuts-bill. I've learned so much from Carrie and can't wait for you to hear this episode. We cover the difference between what people think is hydration and what we mean by cellular hydration. Plus, Carrie and I geek out discussing quantum health strategies in a very practical sense. As a college athlete, supposedly at the pinnacle of health, Carrie began suffering chronic joint issues and insomnia. Now, as an online educator, clinician, and faculty member of the Quantum Biology Collective and Kalamazoo College, Carrie's mission is to teach her clients how to create a healing environment by applying quantum health strategies around light, water, electrons, and mitochondrial support. https://www.carriebwellness.com
On this episode of The Beats, Kelly chats with the brilliant Carrie Bennett, also known as Carrie B. Wellness, to take a deep dive into our health from a quantum perspective. While both Kelly and Carrie agree that our body's chemistry plays an important role in our health, they discuss how it's actually the biophysics of the body - our ability to gather energy and allow it to properly flow - that is the underpinning of our health status and the ultimate determinant of how well our body's messaging system works. Carrie is known for her incredible ability to explain the complexities of the quantum in a way we can all understand. This episode is jam packed with critical insights on how electrons fuel our body, the importance of optimizing our circadian rhythm, the structure of our body's water, the role of minerals, sunlight, breath, our heart, our fascia, and so much more. While the concepts may be difficult to grasp, thankfully the solutions are simple and this episode is chock full of tips and ideas to charge your body battery and heal in a way you never thought possible! Given these tools, clients who have spent years trying to improve their health—just as Carrie did—finally experience powerful healing and lasting benefits. SHOW NOTES: How Carrie got into the quantum field How she was initially influenced by the work of Dr. Jack Kruse What is energy? How our bodies are constantly trying to gather and organize energy to achieve a state of coherence Why there is a disconnect in the modern world Sunlight = electromagnetic radiation Why it's more effective to look at sunrise for three minutes every day than for 3 hours once a month How the different wavelengths of the sun throughout the day affect our bodily functions A healthy cell has a negative charge; we must gather electrons to maintain that charge The mitochondria and the electron transport chain The earth is negatively charged; we must touch our bodies' to the ground What happens to red blood cells when we lose our negative charge We can re-establish that electrical charge by simply touching our bare skin to the earth Fascia as the electrical highway Water in our bodies is structured; it wants to be organized Sunlight helps to maintain structure and keep fluids flowing Water receives information and organizes itself into shapes and then it can store information Water is a powerful storer, receiver and transmitter of information Non-native EMF creates chaotic signaling and degrades our body's antenna Why minerals are important Without minerals we wouldn't be able to maintain the structure of the water Our heart is where our light shines strongest; a powerful magnetic field The words we speak and our thoughts are imprinting our body's water The possibility of healing at the speed of light Carrie's secret of the universe Interested in learning more from Carrie on quantum healing? Preaching for the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Crystal Caruana Sullivan offers a reflection on our relationship to God's law and our journey of discipleship: "A 'rule book' may work as a moral guide for a three-year-old. But we need something more than the prescriptive starting point or set of rules or list of laws. We need Jesus. We need Jesus, who takes us deeper into the mystery of God's wisdom – who invites us to go deeper into the heart of God as we live into God's kingdom. And this is the harder route – because it requires that we choose – each and every day – to surrender our complicated opinions and relationship with the law – and to trust in God, to show us how to follow. " Crystal Sullivan lives in Dayton, OH and has served as the Executive Director of Campus Ministry at the University of Dayton, A Catholic Marianist university, since 2011. She holds a Master of Theological Studies from Weston Jesuit School of Theology, bachelors in Religious Studies and Biology from Kalamazoo College, and is a certified Campus Minister and Marianist Educational Associate. As a college athlete, Carrie (she/her) suffered chronic joint pain and insomnia. After her first child was born, she developed gut inflammation and adrenal fatigue. Armed with a BS in Biology, a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition, and multiple certifications, Carrie sought the root cause of her failing health, ultimately finding circadian and quantum biology, which she has discovered is foundational to health and healing. Carrie currently sees clients in her private online practice. She also teaches courses in applied quantum biology as a faculty member for the Quantum Biology Collective, as an instructor at Kalamazoo College, and via her online course platform. In this episode, on the intersections of Humans + Photosynthesis, here are a few of the major things we cover: How the water in our bodies is structured into a liquid crystal. How that liquid crystal gets charged like a battery by the sun. The fact that humans do photosynthesize. How modern technology and indoor living drain our body’s battery. The cascade of events that happen in our bodies via sunlight. Why our bodies are like radios, constantly picking up vibrational data. The quantum and biological legitimacy of manifesting. How the water in our body remembers past trauma. Carrie’s take on cancer, including cells being “out of tune.” And, why you should ditch your sunglasses. Listeners can find Carrie online, at:Her WebsiteHer Quantum Foundations CourseInstagramYouTube Those who might be interested in taking a deeper dive can also become certified in Carrie’s six-week course, which is the world’s first-ever Quantum Circadian Certification.

School Avoidance, social anxiety, and phobias are all common in childhood affecting 5% to 12% of kids. This is a lot of patients showing up in pediatric practices. The gold standard for treatment is exposure therapy, but that model has its limitations. How do you get a kid on an airplane multiple times to help with fear of flying? A new virtual reality (VR) therapy model is an exciting option. Trained psychologists use VR goggles and with sophisticated software create a patient avatar and experiences where patients can gradually face their fears. Research shows in small studies that the experience feels real and that fears diminish. Larger RCT are needed to push this therapy into the mainstream. Dr. Abbie Vanderwege shares her successes with this therapy and walks us through the patient experience. This is an exciting option for children and adolescents who are struggling. Dr. Vanderwege with a major in Psychology from Kalamazoo College in 2004, quickly transitioned into the master's degree program in Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University, which she completed in 2006. While working toward that degree, she developed an interest in holistic health and pursued a graduate certificate in Holistic Health Care, which she also received in 2006. Dr. Vanderwege then accepted a position as a family therapist for the Family Reunification Program at Bethany Christian Services. Feeling at home in Kalamazoo, she entered the APA-accredited Ph.D. program at Western Michigan University in Counseling Psychology in 2007 and completed a full-time APA-accredited predoctoral internship at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center where she pursued rotations in outpatient and residential PTSD, outpatient mental health, inpatient mental health, and substance abuse treatment. After completing her Ph.D. in 2011, she joined Child & Family Psychological Services 2011, and then directed the Portage office from 2014 to 2020. In 2020 she joined Teletherapy Group where Dr. Vanderwege sees children and adult clients virtually and face-to-face. Dr. Vanderwege has completed advanced training in psychological evaluation, anxiety and PTSD therapies, and mindfulness [00:30 - 08:58] Pediatric Meltdown: Dr. Abbie Vanderwege Talks About Social Anxiety, School Refusal Dr. Abbie Vanderwege is a pediatric psychologist who has a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University. [08:59 - 17:05] Nurture vs Nature?, School Avoidance: How to help kids Specific phobias occur in about 5% of children and can be grouped into a few different areas such as animals, medical procedures, loud noises, storms, and clowns. Some changes that may indicate a child is experiencing anxiety include dropping out of school, not wanting to practice driving, sleeping less than the recommended amount, and having little free time. If parents notice any changes in their child's behavior that seem out of the ordinary or interfere with their ability to function normally, they should consult a therapist. [17:05 - 26:01] Exposure Therapy Can Help Reduce Anxiety The foundation for many effective therapies for anxiety exposure therapy works by systematically introducing and maintaining contact with the feared experience until the experience no longer produces the fear response. For a typical Exposure therapy, an approach would be, developing a hierarchy of feared situations An example of such is when you're afraid of driving, we would start with driving in the car...
Join us as we consider a pack of poems by Pier Wright, and the complexities of pacing, prosody, and narrative poems with strange and powerful images: memory, tenderness, a “magnificent young moose,” & the magic of being caught in the act. Kathleen “Gratitude” Volk Miller, champion explicator and advocate for gratitude and neuroplasticity, analyzes the “small pointy hats of hope” as lovers entwine. Jason “Gorgeous Vectors” Schneiderman loves sticky collisions. Gabby and Alex and the crew ponder happy endings and surprises that feel like “Objective correlatives,” slushies. Spoiler: Marion “Sunshine” Wrenn makes an appearance from future past, or future perfect, or…something like that. It all makes a great story. Slushies, what is your “embarrassing at the moment but will be funny later” story? This episode is brought to you by one of our sponsors, Wilbur Records, who kindly introduced us to the artist A.M.Mills, whose song “Spaghetti with Loretta” now opens our show. Pier Wright attended Kalamazoo College where he was influenced by the poetry of Con Hilberry and later by that of Diane Seuss. The first poetry reading he ever attended, and has never forgotten, was Robert Bly reading from Silence In The Snowy Fields. He received a Post-Baccalaureate & Masters degree from The Art Institute of Chicago. As a student he discovered Fairfield Porter, Monet's large Water Lilly paintings at at Musée de l'Orangerie, Terry Winters, Mary Heilmann, Philip Guston's late paintings, Giotto, Noguchi, etc.. Influences include Prayer Wheels, Marie Howe, Chris Martin, Peter Matthiessen, Stephen Dunn, John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Joni Mitchell, Phyllida Barlow, the ceramic work of Toshiko Takaezu, and, most recently, the writings of C.D. Wright. While living as a hermit for several years at the end of a peninsula in N Michigan he began working with Michael Delp. I tried calling several times, a memory persistent as the fly banging on this kitchen door screen. Mother's Day what a day in the garden pulling out the knotweed the clover and spurge forgiving you for leaving so soon the way they cut your head open I recall a dream I find you in a dumpster it's hot your bones are missing and you can't get out just now before dark beside the thistle and burdock your cheeks wet I ask if you are hungry I chop potatoes eggs olives how tender the early dandelion greens are tossed with sea salt bitter with lemon drizzled with the good oil I keep for company

Preaching for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Elizabeth Garlow invites us to the ecological conversion called for in Laudato Si': "We will have to let go of the short-termism and instant gratification that is so pervasive. We will need to adopt a longer-term view, one that helps us understand what it might look like to live in ways that would make us good ancestors. It reminds me of the passage in today's Gospel parable where God says to the harvester - ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?'" Elizabeth Garlow has worked in the areas of social entrepreneurship, impact investing and public policy with an eye toward building an economy rooted in solidarity and mutual care. Three years ago, Elizabeth was moved by the launch of the global Economy of Francesco Movement to co-find the Francesco Collaborative, a network of investors, entrepreneurs and other changemakers seeking to respond to Pope Francis' call to be “protagonists of transformation” in our economy. Today, she runs “Livable Future Investing” workshops through the Francesco Collaborative, inviting investors to discern and embrace their most important work in building the solidarity economy. She also accompanies religious congregations as they discern how to align their assets with mission in an ever-evolving world. She also conducts research on well-being economics as a fellow with New America. Elizabeth holds a BA from Kalamazoo College and a Master's in public policy and economics from Princeton University. She loves swimming, playing folk music, and making a home in the Detroit area with her partner Paul and their new daughter Sophia. Previous Episodes w/ Adam: Serene Jones & Adam Clark: Theology Matters and the Legacy of James Cone The Crisis of American Religion & Democracy: 1/6 a year later Christmas, BLM, Abortion, & the War on White Evangelicalism Jan 6th Theological Debrief: Adam Clark and Jeffrey Pugh Adam Clark: What is Black Theology? From Lebron James to the Black Panther: Black Theology QnA w/ Adam Clark Adam Clark: James Cone was right Dr. Adam Clark is Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University. He is committed to the idea that theological education in the twenty first century must function as a counter-story. One that equips us to read against the grain of the dominant culture and inspires one to live into the Ignatian dictum of going forth “to set the world on fire.” To this end, Dr. Clark is intentional about pedagogical practices that raise critical consciousness by going beneath surface meanings, unmasking conventional wisdoms and reimagining the good. He currently serves as co-chair of Black Theology Group at the American Academy of Religion, actively publishes in the area of black theology and black religion and participates in social justice groups at Xavier and in the Cincinnati area. He earned his PhD at Union Theological Seminary in New York where he was mentored by James Cone. Dr. Gary Dorrien teaches social ethics, theology, and philosophy of religion as the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Social Ethics at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Religion at Columbia University. He was previously the Parfet Distinguished Professor at Kalamazoo College, where he taught for 18 years and also served as Dean of Stetson Chapel and Director of the Liberal Arts Colloquium. Professor Dorrien is the author of 20 books and more than 300 articles that range across the fields of social ethics, philosophy, theology, political economics, social and political theory, religious history, cultural criticism, and intellectual history. Philosopher Cornel West describes him as “the preeminent social ethicist in North America today.” Philosopher Robert Neville calls him “the most rigorous theological historian of our time, moving from analyses of social context and personal struggles through the most abstruse theological and metaphysical issues.” Dorrien told an interviewer in 2016: “I am a jock who began as a solidarity activist, became an Episcopal cleric at thirty, became an academic at thirty-five, and never quite settled on a field, so now I explore the intersections of too many fields.” Follow the podcast, drop a review, or become a member of the HBC Community.
