Like Pat, his Mom wore her politics and values on her sleeve, and she wasn't bashful about sharing her views, especially when she thought some right-winger was completely wrong! Her political values and passion have indeed been passed-down to Pat, and he explains why he's so incredibly grateful to have those important traits. Then, Pat explains the importance of focusing on local and state politics during these Trump Part II days. 15:30-37:25: MI State Rep. Betsy Coffia Interview Pat next talks with Michigan Progressive Democratic State Representative Betsy Coffia. Rep. Coffia works hard for the people of the 103rd District, covering Leelanau, Benzie, and Grand Traverse Counties. Despite Coffia's district being mostly rural, and despite Republicans trying their best to oust her, Coffia actually Increased her victory margin in this past election compared her first win in 2022. Coffia explains how she was able to achieve success in a tough year for other Michigan Democrats. And she talks about the wasted opportunity by state House Democrats to pass important bills during their last days in the majority. 37:26-45:00: Last Call on A Weak Resistance The "Last Call" segment highlights a column by Michigan Advance's Susan J. Demas, in which Demas writes how there is very little resistance going into this Trump term compared to the first one in 2016. Unlike the Women's Marches in '16, there were no Democratic Party officials present at any marches this time around. How can there be a Resistance 2.0 if Democratic Party leaders are already bending the knee in both Michigan and D.C.? 45:01-49:20: Ending/Demise of The Lions Pat ends on a sports note by sharing his thoughts and feelings on the early, and stunning, ouster of the Detroit Lions in the NFL Playoffs. Yet, Pat remains optimistic for the Lions next year.  Please, subscribe to the podcast, download each episode, and give it a good review if you can! leftoflansing@gmail.com Left of Lansing is now on YouTube as well! leftoflansing.com NOTES: "The Resistance decides it's futile." It's all about gorgeous, secluded, quaint, and charming Northport on this week's Behind the Mitten.Shhhh.....don't let anyone else in on this secret! Or at least this is what we've heard from locals for years, as they would like to keep their little slice of heaven to themselves if they can. We can't blame them after a mid-fall visit. Northport is located at the tip of the pinky finger, at the tail end of the Leelanau Peninsula. With a population of about 500 year round, Northport quadruples in size each summer, and welcomes visitors from all over to experience the peaceful quiet and beauty of the peninsula. We recorded the show at The Mitten Brewing Company in Northport. This Grand Rapids based brewery operates a simple taproom featuring their classic brews year round. Stop in and chat with bartender/manager Dan Frank, not only will he quide you to some excellent liquid, he can also let you know all the cool things to do in the area. While you are there, be sure to visit our very good friend Paul Penning at The Big Hot Woody-North End, which is his wood-fired pizza cart located on the patio at the brewery. Paulie joins us to talk not just good pizza, but also his long-time friendship with Amy, who used to cook with him in Grand Rapids. Life-long resident, and great friend, Susan Wilcox Olsen is back on the show, but this time giving true insider tips for the Leelanau Peninsula, from pituresque hikes to new wineries in the area. Her love and passion for Northport shines through. Finally, we seriously talk wine from the region with THE winemaker from 45 North, Jay Briggs. He shares not just what makes their wine different (think cement aging vessels) but what makes wine from the Leelanau special. Here's the 45th installment of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Democratic State Rep. Betsy Coffia from the 103rd District joins me this week. Rep. Coffia's district contains Leelanau, Grand Traverse, and Benzie Counties. She's been a journalist, a social worker, and a Grand Traverse County commissioner. And now, she's in Lansing trying to make a difference on a variety of fronts. We discuss the Traverse City hair salon owner who's refusing to serve transgender people, why bigotry is bad for business, the budgets Democrats passed, her work on the school aid budget to help kids and families in northern Michigan, allowing 16-year olds to pre-register to vote, and more. You can follow Rep. Coffia on Twitter. My opening segment concentrates on how the right wing has always used “fear and anger” to get-out its voting base. Nothing has changed in the last 40 years when it comes to the Republican Party's values. Donald Trump wasn't some anomaly. The party was always a Trump party, and he emboldened Republican voters to finally say the quiet things out-loud. Party insiders are trying to silence those voices, but it's too late, now! The “Last Call” continues my opening segment argument that Michigan Republicans stand for nothing, and have zero constructive policy ideas designed to help people. Your kindness means the world to me and I hope you might feel inspired to explore the natural areas where you live.Captain's Log, Stardate 100646.84. It has been weeks since the sun has appeared on this planet. A constant mist has enveloped this region, identified as northern Michigan, since the dawn of a new earth year. Contact made today with earthlings that appear to be in distress because of warm temperatures and a lack of something they call Vitamin D. Of all the earthlings encountered in Alpha Quadrant, the northerner is, perhaps, the strangest. Summary:My goal to record the Red Fox again this week did not go well. The constant wind and misting rain have played hell with my recording equipment and my patience. Two nights of failed recordings and hours spent alone in a field with rain running down my neck convinced me to give up on the Red Fox this week. I bailed on Sleeping Bear Dunes and made my way to Northport to visit the Leelanau State Park. I like the rocky beach at this park, which is unlike the sandy stretches of Sleeping Bear. There is also a cool lighthouse and the ability to watch Great Lakes Freighters as they make their way to the Upper Peninsula through the Manitou Straits. I didn't intend to record the wave action, but the wind was just right to capture some interesting sounds as the waves crashed into large rocks near the shore. The water levels are down so I could get further out than what is possible to get close to some large boulders….. that are slick (I know this but sometimes I'm an idiot). I realized, too late, that my feet were slipping and it dumped me into the lake. I'd love to say it was part of a planned Polar Plunge, but I'd be lying. Luckily, I had extra clothes in the truck, so could change and keep recording. The only thing I didn't have was another pair of boots, but I found that if I kept moving that my feet didn't get too cold. I was going to apologize for recording more lake and wave activity, but I'm not sure it is necessary. Every water feature is unique and offers an interesting soundscape. Being surrounded by the Great Lakes is special and something I shouldn't take for granted. I want to bring you diverse recordings and interesting soundscapes every week, but I have to take the sounds that are given to me. Recording Details:Date and Time: 1/18/2023 | 2:30 PMLocation: Leelanau State Park in Northport, MichiganLandscape/Feature: Rocky BeachConditions: 32F (0C), Windy, FogRecording Device: Zoom F3 Field RecorderMicrophone(s): Audio Technica BP 4025Digital Audio Workstation: Adobe AuditionSupport the showThanks for listening! ❤️ Your support means the world to me. Sakura Takano, Chief Executive Officer, Rotary Charities of Traverse City joins Ryan and Mark to share the pursuits of Rotary Charities. About Rotary Charities:[Rotary Charities} support{s} 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, Native nations, local units of government, and school districts that provide services in Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties.[Rotary Charities] believe[s] Our community has the creativity, perspective and persistence to build a society where everyone can thrive. And changemakers have been working to better our community for decades. Yet some challenges persist, and some have even gotten worse - like the housing crisis, hunger, or climate change. We've gotten good at helping our community beat the odds, but it's not sustainable. It's time to change the odds.We believe we need to work differently together to make progress. Working alongside community members from many walks of life to build community assets will help us meet the needs of those often left behind. Systems practice provides a framework to study issues from new angles, and find opportunities for change we may not have noticed before. And cultivating adaptive leadership skills to navigate changing environments will build supportive and innovative workplaces and communities.Connecting people to each other, knowledge and opportunities creates change. We are committed to using our connections and resources to support changemakers in addressing our region's complex problems and creating community assets for all. And we are learning to work in new ways to achieve these big goals, as reflected in our guiding principles. This Aug. 4 event, held at 45 North Winery & Vineyard in Lake Leelanau, features a loop 5K course – the 10K runners will do it twice – on the winery’s beautiful on-property recreational trail. And after crossing the finish line? Each runner and walker will receive a finisher’s medal and commemorative wine glass (for tasting some of 45 North’s delicious vintages!). On this latest episode, Heather sits down with two special guests to talk about this inaugural race: her husband Joe, who has been busy doing tons of behind-the-scenes work on this race, and Eddie Kline, who is serving as co-race director of the MRG Trail 10K & 5K. You likely know Eddie as the race director of the Holland Haven Marathon, Half Marathon & 8K in Holland, Mich. This race, which has been frequently featured on the podcast and the MRG website in the past, takes place each September. Heather, Eddie and Joe share details of the upcoming race and answer questions that have come up from readers and listeners. Can guys come to this all-women’s race? Absolutely! We welcome husbands, partners, brothers, dads, grandpas, uncles and sons to join the festivities and cheer on their runners! Another question answered: yes, walkers and runners alike are invited to participate! A special discount code also is shared. We hope to see you there! MRG’s vision for this event: Imagine a day filled with running, with encouragement and cheering from fellow women who embrace movement, friendships and going after big (and small) goals – and who love Michigan’s scenic landscape just as much as you.
