Abdul Abdullah is one of Australia's leading artists and we were lucky enough to meet and interview him at his studio in St. Leonards, shortly before he moves to Bangkok, Thailand. 'Abdul Abdullah is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist. As a self-described ‘outsider amongst outsiders' with a post-9/11 mindset, his practice is primarily concerned with the experience of the ‘other'. Abdullah's projects have engaged with different marginalized minority groups and he is particularly interested in the disjuncture between perception/projection of identity and the reality of lived experience. Identifying as a Muslim and having both Malay/Indonesian and convict/settler Australian heritage, Abdullah occupies a precarious space in the political discourse that puts him at odds with popular definitions. He sees himself as an artist working in the peripheries of a peripheral city, in a peripheral country, orbiting a world on the brink. His work has been censored by politicians who have accused him of attacking Australian culture, and once a member of the Christian Democratic party wrote that he wants to “convert young Australians” and that he “worships a moon god”.'Abdul is represented at Yavuz Gallery, Sydney, and internationally. Thanks, Abdul for your time, we really appreciate it.

Abdul Abdullah is an Aussie artist who's fascinated by the concept of being an outsider, something he identifies with personally.  Abdul Is a 7th generation Australian-Muslim with Indonesian and Malay heritage. He's a man who can't be put into a box by any one definition.   Working across portraiture, photography and painting, Abdul vividly expresses the experience of growing up Muslim in Australia in the post 9/11 era, confronting the prejudices that've marginalised Muslim youth.  His provocative art has struck a cord around the world and even been censored by politicians, who've accused him of attacking culture.  Abdul's part of a the new ABC TV series, Space 22, which explores art therapy as a means of improving mental wellbeing.   A picture paints a thousand words and Abdul's got a lot to say...

Abdul Abdullah is an artist from Perth, Australia, five-time finalist for the Archibald - the famous Australian portrait competition, and the recipient of many other awards and recognitions for his provocative artworks about race, racism, introspection and identity. In this interview Abdul shares his story about growing up in Perth, engaging in some kinds of juvenile delinquency, being raised in humble beginnings but with the consistent support of his family, going to art school and being willing to experiment with his art. A key challenge came to Abdullah when he submitted a portrait to the Archibald prize. He met Muslim Australian author and academic Waleed Aly, painted his portrait and became a finalist in the national competition for the first time. To Abdullah's surprise, he started receiving hate mail, a dozen letters a day. Apparently these people hated Abdul just because of his new mentor's politics, and because of his name. It was then that Abdul had to decide - would he stay angry, or would he transmute his anger into something positive, through his art? An edited version of this episode is also a video which you can see here: When I started this podcast in July 2016 with no knowledge of audio recording - let alone how to start a podcast - I never imagined that four years later I would have interviewed close to a hundred painters, as well as curators and authors, and have a YouTube channel with over 100 videos filmed on my iPhone. Building up this podcast would not have been possible, though, without the encouragement of those close to me and the time and generosity of my guests as well as many others' support in the wonderful Australian arts community. It has also been a privilege to get to know so many of you listeners either through messages, comments on social media or meeting you in person. Even if we haven't had any contact, you are the reason I keep doing the show so thank you for listening. I couldn't think of a better place to celebrate the centenary episode than the Art Gallery of NSW where about a quarter of my podcast guests are finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. Abdul Abdullah is a four time Archibald finalist and this year he has paintings hanging in both the Archibald and Sulman prizes in the Art Gallery of NSW. He has won several art prizes including the Blake Prize for Human Justice in 2011 and has been finalist in many others. Abdul's art delivers a strong message. Issues of identity and the current political environment concerning  the Muslim community in Australia are front and foremost in his work. We talk about how he sees 9/11 impacted the Muslim community and how after that event 'it became apparent that in the popular imagination Muslims in Australia had become the 'bad guys''.  We also talk about the 2005 Cronulla riots and how he came about painting retired police officer Craig Campbell for the Archibald. He also gives insights into his painting process and photographic art. Abdul's work is currently included in four shows in Victoria and NSW with another three coming up over the next few weeks, including a solo show in Melbourne in November. From the beginning with the slick cadence of the tom toms, to the firry zeal of the brass band, the melodic chants, and last the hype happy DJ, this song is strictly New Orleans at it's finest! It has that high school band flavor mixed with that cajun blood Line of a Louisiana man. To simply put it, It's Gumbo Baby!  The New Orleans Saints fans from all over the world are loving this song, and The New Orleans Saints football players are on the bandwagon also. God only knows, but I think that this song has the potential to be around for a long time.    Nice fight song my man,   J. Wayne (Power 105.1) New York, NY
