What started in a bedroom on the south coast of New South Wales has now spread its wings and traversed the country - singing songs, sharing stories and exploring a wide spectrum of musical ideas. Sean Conran was synonymous with Obscura Hail from his teens and well into his 20s before the moniker expanded to include other people. In 2019, this included bassist/vocalist Tamara Issa and drummer/percussionist Stevie West - and it was this line-up that created the project's most recent effort, the Zero EP. While on a national tour in support of it back in November 2019, the trio shared tales from across parks in Nowra, rough nights in Bendigo and crab shacks in outer-suburban Melbourne. Conroy Ross, Paul Minor and Tomy Thisdale grew up in small-town Canada, dreaming of the west coast. Each found their way to music in a similar fashion, and soon enough they ended up in a tight-knit music community exploring their love of rock music in all its shapes and forms. Having originally formed The Carbons with a different lineup, Tomy first recruited Paul and then Conroy to be a part of the band - and now, with well over a year of experience playing together, The Carbons have their sights set on the next level. In November 2019, the trio toured Australia for the very first time. In-between dates at the Australian Music Week conference, the band held court upstairs at the Town Hall Hotel and shared tales from ramshackle pubs, makeshift US jaunts and Montreal assholes. Canada's Cancer Bats never formed out of any grand ambitions to change the world - indeed, it began as little more than a side project for Liam Cormier and Scott Middleton. Even so, the next 15 years saw the riff-loving Canucks take their love of punk, hardcore and rock & roll to a global stage. No matter what has come their way, the band has made a point to never lose sight of their roots. They've also made a point of never losing their sense of humour - and this episode will happily testify to that. In October 2019, Cancer Bats ran ruckus on Bar Bands before a freezing-cold show with Totally Unicorn in the nation's capitol, Canberra. Cormier and bassist Jaye Schwarzer turned the podcast into their playhouse, while simultaneously offering up informative history of the early 2000s Canadian hardcore scene. There was never a universe in which such a strange band with such a strange sound and an unmentionable name would be successful. Except, of course, this one. A wholly DIY freak-folk expedition, Crywank have been streamed millions of times and faced a fervent cult fanbase wherever they would show their faces. How exactly did two working-class English punks make such a considerable dent? Vocalist/guitarist James Clayton and drummer Dan Watson (with special guest melodica player Joel Hernandez) offered up a guided tour before their last-ever Sydney show at the Red Rattler theatre towards the end of 2019. Expect ongoing tales of musical boxes, travel disasters and a testicular scare in the midst of an emotional rollercoaster. Yes, all of those stories are real. Sasami Ashworth grew up as a quiet achiever. She pursued music only on her own terms, and even when she ended up in a touring band it was as a side player. It's only in the last 18 months that Sasami has finally emerged in the spotlight as a singer-songwriter in her own right. Her debut self-titled album is a thing of vulnerability and resplendent indie-rock beauty, indebted to the likes of Liz Phair and The Breeders and yet quintessential enough to forge its own identity. In November 2019, Sasami arrived in Australia for her second visit and her first national support in support of Spacey Jane. Before a show in Wollongong, Ashworth (and perhaps a special guest) spoke openly about piano lessons, touring with Cherry Glazerr and meeting Debbie Harry. Damian Abraham never wanted to be in a band or be involved with music above simply appreciating it. Whatever happenstance allowed it to happen, however, the man who would later become known as Pink Eyes eventually evolved into one of the scene's most passionate creatives. Whether he's at the helm of Fucked Up, hosting his own podcast or sharing his love of wrestling and weed to a global audience, Damian lives and breathes what he loves. Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher first joined forces in 2013 after nearly a decade of friendship and travelling up and down the east coast together. Between the three of them are ARIA nominations, sold-out shows and a set in just about every bar and club around the country - and yet, when they convened as Dyson Stringer Cloher, they'd never felt stronger. Amanda Palmer has never been the kind of artist that bows to the status quo. Existing outside the conventions of rock, folk, punk and cabaret, she's been making music that provokes, intrigues and entertains for some 20 years now. Whether it's part of The Dresden Dolls, the Grand Theft Orchestra or under her own name, Palmer has always been creating and performing. It's not come without its controversies, but every setback has allowed her to grow, adapt and evolve. It's lead to her third solo album, , which is her most exhaustive and personal collection yet. In the midst of an extensive Australian tour, Palmer spoke at length about her origins as a child of the 80s and teen of the 90s, before kicking into the 21st century with a ferocity and unbridled ambition. There Will Be No Intermission Amanda will be on tour until the end of February. Growing up amidst the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad found both a lifeline and an escape through music. Encouraged by their families and their peers, they each kicked around teenage garage-rock outfits before forging their own path as Girlpool. With the release of their debut album, 2015's , the duo clicked on an international level and ended up with a cult following for their unique, folk-inspired take on indie rock. More albums and tours have followed, the most recent being 2019's . They may be tiny dots on an endless timeline, but La Dispute have made their time together count. Over 15 years and four studio albums, plus a dozen EPs and countless tours, the band's unique and poetic take on post-hardcore has endeared them to a global audience. Theirs is the definition of a cult following - they may not pack arenas, but everyone at a La Dispute show will scream every last word right back in the band's face. One of the band's key turning points was coming to Australia for a completely DIY national tour back in 2009, and the country has become a second home for the band - quite literally in drummer Brad Vander Lugt's case, as he now lives on the Sunshine Coast with his family. Both he and vocalist Jordan Dreyer - not only cousins, but the founding members of the band - tracked the band's history before one of the final stops on their most recent tour, at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle. On paper, the two members of Cry Club couldn't be more different. Guitarist Jono Tooke, for instance, has been playing in bands for over a decade despite not even being 30 yet - from big-swinging indie to freaky math-metal and back. Vocalist Heather Riley, on the other hand, has never been in a band before. Their mind was always on the theatre (dahling), and that's where it would have stayed had they not been saddled up next to Jono on a flight. Since their first show at the start of 2018, Cry Club have achieved an unbelievable amount of things - just the day before this went live, they were revealed as the number-one most-played artist on triple j Unearthed radio. Are they the most punk band in power-pop or the most power-pop band in punk? Really, it doesn't matter - any way you cut it, Joyce Manor have been one of the most consistent and engaging bands in rock throughout the 2010s. Never quite settling, and constantly switching things up, the band has found a cult following that's lead to sold-out shows and deafening sing-alongs in just about every corner of the planet. Not that this kind of ambition was realised by a young Barry Johnson, however - starting out as a young punk in Op Ivy worship bands, he could have never forseen how his career would go down. Hell, he didn't even envision having career. Prior to a show at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory, Johnson raced through his musical upbringing and his coming of age right through to where the band stands in the present tense.a Special thanks to Cat Clarke, Cooking Vinyl Australia, the Oxford Art Factory and Adam Buncher. A quiet kid from suburban Adelaide, Sione Teumohenga always kept their passion for music private and locked away. Bit by bit and song by song, however, saw them unravel that shyness and insecurity to ultimately reveal a blooming, blossoming and creative songwriter. The last few years has seen Teumohenga at the helm of Lonelyspeck, creating some of the most unique and immersive experimental/electronic music that this country - or indeed any country - has to offer. Through Lonelyspeck, Teumohenga has gotten to play Laneway Festival, collaborate with Allday and even open for The Dillinger Escape Plan - and they're far from finished, too. Back in June during a visit to Sydney, Teumohenga had a chat out the front of a busy Surry Hills cafe and gave a quick guided tour through nu-metal discoveries, high-school bands and opening up to Ableton. In 2005, Karnivool became an overnight success story in Australian heavy music - and all it took was nearly a decade of pushing the band to get there. Nearly 15 years on, the Perth five-piece have lost none of their drive or motivation - even if we don't hear new music for years at a time. There's a method to the madness, and the band's approach to progressive alt-metal has kept them in consistent demand as a live band both nationally and internationally. In-between all of that, there's been other bands, burnout, creative sparks and hitting sheep with their van - and none of it got left out when vocalist Ian Kenny and bassist Jon Stockman gave the Vool the treatment before a show in Wollongong back in June.Bar Bands Special thanks to Bec Reato, Deathproof PR, the University of Wollongong and Adam Buncher. Friends plural, you ask? Yep, that's right. For all intents and purposes, Ruby Fields is not one singer-songwriter but four best friends: Adam, Patrick, Ruby and Tarzo. They've been kicking around in one another's bands for years, all based out of the Sutherland Shire and its intrinsic music community. It wasn't until Ruby's music broke out just a couple of years ago, however, that business really picked up. Before a show in Canberra, all four members of the band shared stories from across their time playing music - together, separately and through the doldrums of day-jobs. Fair warning: Pretty lame and pretty tame this ain't. Ruby Fields will be playing two sold-out shows at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla this October, followed by a regional tour in November and December with LOSER. The big-time was never meant for a band like Foxing. They grew up on the outskirts of any real music scene in St. Louis, Missouri, often having to venture outwards or create their own scene and community from within. It's with this, however, that Foxing have become cult heroes. While a typical show from the band won't be filling out big theatres or arenas, everyone in attendance is devoted to the band's passionate and inventive take on emo-revival indie-rock. Look no further than their maiden voyage to Australia as living proof of this, as the band played to tiny, packed rooms full of screaming, adoring fans. In-between those, lead vocalist Conor Murphy and guitarist Eric Hudson sat around a kitchen table in their Sydney hotel suite to give their entire musical careers the treatment.Bar Bands Special thanks to Cat Clarke, Renee Rudolf, Cooking Vinyl Australia, XIII Touring and Adam Buncher. He's the new old guy on the block. The overnight success story with the 20-year career. He's the guy indie kids of multiple generations love - and the guy Duran Duran loved to hate. He's SPOD, baby - and when he's at home, they call him Brent Griffin. It's safe to say that no-one has had quite the same trajectory in the world of music - from a simple Hills District kid discovering hip-hop, to 2000s festival favourite, right up to 2010s cult figure and coffee reporter. The world of Charly Bliss is a constantly evolving one. It's bunny-moshing and sugar-rushes one moment, slow-dances and sombre synths the next. Across two albums, it's made them one of the most captivating new bands on the indie-rock circuit - and in July of 2019, it was finally Australia's turn to experience this exceptional band in the flesh. Over a couple of jetlagged drinks in Sydney, frontwoman Eva Hendricks and guitarist Spencer Fox let loose on everything from the art of percussion to their best-forgotten nu-folk project. This week's story is bittersweet. We're celebrating the musical journey of an incredibly talented young man, whose honest and emotive work was bolstered by a fruitful and prosperous DIY community after other parts of the country - and even the world - ignored him. Azim Zain is a Malaysian-born singer, songwriter, guitarist and multi-instrumentalist that has split his life between Adelaide, Sydney and Canberra. Unfortunately, Azim was recently deported, meaning he can't be with us here in Australia to share this story. Thankfully, we recorded this the afternoon prior to his final show for the time being as a Canberra local, and now Azim's story gets to be heard like it always deserved to. The hills of Adelaide. The beaches of the Central Coast. The outskirts of Sydney's inner-west. Despite coming from three completely different worlds, the four members of I Know Leopard found common ground through their love of music - from The Strokes to classical and all the way through to worship music. 2019 has already proven to be the biggest year of the band's career - their long-awaited debut album, , was released in April, and saw the band sell out a show at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory not a month later. For many Australian music fans, Methyl Ethel didn't just arrive - they materialised, seemingly out of nowhere. With their sleeper hit "Ubu," the Perth natives took to national stages to increasing acclaim that has now spread to their third studio album, . Long before he was bemoaning anyone's hairstyle choices, however, Jake Webb was a curious and introverted kid trying to figure out his place in the world of music. He spent years honing his craft and playing as a sideman before anyone had so much as even heard the name Methy Ethel - and, on the day came out, he went into detail (well, mostly) about his fascinating story so far. One of WA's most promising young upstarts, Carla Geneve forged out her love of music as a young kid in Albany. Persevering through hellish piano lessons, Geneve later discovered the healing powers of Acca Dacca and The Living End. She's long since turned the amp up to 11 and carved her own path in the rock world. Although she's only 20 years old, Geneve has already lapped up considerable national attention for her endearing and honest music. "This is our music. These are rebel songs. Are you in or out?" Ever since the Stodarts (Romeo and Michelle) crossed paths with the Gannons (Angela and Sean) on the outskirts of London, theirs has always been a unique approach. In the mid-2000s, they generated a buzz to the point that they were able to play three sold-out shows without even releasing any music. Plenty has followed in the intervening years, however, including last year's excellent LP. Outsiders Traversing the worlds of pop and rock with a gleeful, harmonious tinge, The Magic Numbers have always thrived on their own terms and have never compromised their vision for anyone else - a trait to truly be commended in this day and age. In a first, this episode was recorded in Brisbane, on the opening night of The Magic Numbers' first Australian tour in nine years. Red City Radio know they belong to the land, and the land they belong to is grand. As one of Oklahoma City's major musical exports, the band have been taking their barroom-ready take on melodic punk to every last sweaty room that will have them. It's changed a lot since drummer Dallas Tidwell co-founded the band in 2005 - so much so, it's left him as the only original member. For this chat, he's joined by the person with the second-longest tenure - vocalist/guitarist Garrett Dale - and the two talk shop on tour beers, the differences between "Rapper's Delight" and "Gangsta's Paradise" and the moments in the band's history that have made their teen selves proud. Banoffee is regarded as one of the most forward-thinking and innovative pop/dance songwriters working today. With co-signs from the likes of SOPHIE and Charli XCX, not to mention a string of killer fashion collabs, she holds the captive attention of a global audience. Before all that though, Banoffee was Martha Brown - a part of Melbourne's Two Bright Lakes collective and one third of art-pop outsiders Otouto. As soon as he was drawn to music as a teenager, George Clarke had an eye for the extraordinary, the outlandish and the unabashedly heavy. It would come to reflect in the music that he made himself, most notably coming to fruition in the form of Deafheaven. Four albums deep, the Grammy-nominated band are one of metal's most divisive and engaging acts - and they've never compromised their vision for anyone or anything. So, how did this awkward Californian kid become one of his genre's most confident and alluring frontmen? Most guests of the podcast spend ages traversing different bands before they land on The One. For Joe Talbot, all he has ever known as a vocalist, songwriter and performer has been IDLES since they first formed back in 2009. His perseverance with the band has come to pay off with major dividends, as the Bristol-based band rose to major indie stardom in 2018 with their critically-adored second album, Joy As An Act Of Resistance. In a candid chat in the Gallery Bar of Sydney's Oxford Art Factory - while the rest of his bandmates learn how to play Streets songs - Talbot explains his initial love of music, the rise and fall of UK indie and what one learns from relentless touring. Rock & roll is a world that rarely gives second chances - so, when James Alex decided to give it another go-around, few could have predicted that he'd immediately strike gold with Beach Slang; who have gone on to become one of the most hyped indie-rock bands on the planet. It came some 20 years after Alex originally broke into the world of music with Weston, a cult pop-punk outfit for which he played guitar - and yet, their worlds are completely different, yet more closely aligned than you might think. In July, Alex made his maiden voyage to Australia with Beach Slang as a part of the massive line-up for Splendour in the Grass. Upon arriving in Sydney, he took some time out in the foyer of his hotel room to share his unique, unexpected and eventful story.
