Sydney, Australia's Bonepeople was a mid-to-late 1990s project, inspired by world music, rhythm and grooves, triphop, electronica, politics, and peace and Maori New Zealand's novelist Keri Hulme's Booker Prize-winning The Bone People.Spearheaded by dual songwriters and seasoned bassists Vanessa Lucas and Adrian Workman, the project at its height evolved into a 7-piece live band, before calling it quits in late 1998. Their new 3-song EP, "Deception, Love, and Hope", presents reimagined versions of key songs from that period; beautifully produced, reworked and remastered for 2024.Adrian Workman hails from the iwi (Māori tribe) named Ngāti Kahungunu. He is known for his work as bassist, cofounder and lead songwriter with New Zealand early 1980s post-punk outfit Vietnam, and later as a member of Sydney-based indie guitar popsters The Bhagavad Guitars, and melodic alt. rock band.Vanessa Lucas has roots in Sydney's vibrant Greek community. During the 1990s she played violin with indie pop/rock band Tall Tales & True, and bass, violin and backing vocals with the prominent indigenous Australian group Mixed Relations. She has also recorded with First Nations artist Kev Carmody, and Māori artist Jen Cloher, among others.A full album from Bone people was recorded through 1995-1997, but never released. In 2000, Vanessa and Adrian revisited three of the album tracks, with a view to reimagining the songs from their original conception. "Deception, Love and Hope" is available now. https://bonepeople.bandcamp.comhttps://amrap.org.au/artist/bonepeople-1QUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap Radio | KMOD: San Antonio3pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)Radio: https://modsnapradio.comThank you for liking and subscribing and THANK YOU for your continued support !

When acclaimed songwriter and performer Jen Cloher (Ngāti Kahu, Ngāpuhi) started to learn about their Māori heritage their whole outlook on life changed. In the new podcast series, Everybody's Trying To Find Their Way Home, Cloher speaks with icons like Dr. Lou Bennett about Sovereign Language Rematriation and Emma Donovan about the lasting legacy of Aunty Ruby Hunter. At the heart of the podcast is a gentle provocation to us all. What does it feel like when we make the journey towards our own ancestral languages and traditions? How does that journey help to make our occupation on these lands more conscious and embodied? What joy can be found in knowing the stories of strength that come through our own bloodlines? For Spring Fling, Cloher took to the stage with a panel of Māori and First Nations songwriters including Uncle Kutcha Edwards, Allara and Breanne Peters. Together they recorded a special live episode of Everybody's Trying To Find Their Way Home, complete with an array of joyful musical performances. This event was presented in partnership with RMIT Culture. It was recorded on Saturday 14 October 2023 at The Capitol. Featured music: ‘Mother Tongue' performed by Kutcha Edwards, Allara, Jen Cloher and Breanne Peters and ‘He Taka-Tu-Moana' performed by Jen Cloher and Breanne Peters.Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jen Cloher (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu) was on tour in Aotearoa in 2019 when something happened that changed the course of their life. Four years later, Jen is a new person — about to set out on an international tour (Aus, UK, Europe and Aotearoa) for a new album that weaves their matrilineal language, Te reo Māori throughout. Before they can begin to document other Māori and First Nations experiences, Jen will need to face imposter syndrome, stare down shame, and walk open hearted towards their language and culture. Jen Cloher is an indigenous Maori living in Australia. She champions the causes of the Aboriginal and native peoples all around the world. She is one amazing musican and songwriter, channeling her anger, hope, guilt, and strength into bringing awareness to queer rights, inigenous peoples rights, treaties, and holding things sacred, and respect. She is one of the most wonderful people I have ever spoken to in my life. Her music is nothing short of amazing, inspiring and at times very moving. We talked about the songwriting, her reasons and motivations, and a message of moving forward. She calls out the right ring and racist politicans in Australia, and I realized how aware I really was about Australian politcs. (Really, from articles I read 30 years ago, the issues are still going on). She pulls no punches and gives a beautiful vision of what the world would look like after decolonization. If you could imagine a female fronted "Velvet Undergeound" clashed with Midnight Oil, that is what you get with Jen Cloher. Her new album comes out this week "I am the river, the River is Me". website facebook instagram youtube#realitytv #milkrecords #aboriginaltreaty #queersingers #climatechange #materialsism #midnightoil #maori #australian #aboriginalrights #humanity #thevelvetunderground decolinization #thehaka #giveitback

Welcome to the third episode of Á Tea For Two: A cuppa tea with two Creatives. This week Áine Tyrrell invites Jen Cloher in for a cuppa. I first met Jen when I shyly walked into her @imanagemymusic workshop many years ago and Jen is one of those people who set me on a path of independence and integrity. I admire Jen's strength and curiosity in all I've seen since that first meeting. In that very first room we met in, Jen was holding space but also inquisitive to all the experience in the room and how we could all learn from each other. And in the years since, Jen has always been that kind of person in any room we have met in - houses, festivals, protests, and in Zoom Rooms - Jen has a way of connecting everyone together in a room and also pushing everyone to ask more questions and be more of ourselves. Jen inspires me greatly for all the questions posed inside, to the music community, and to society. A true thinker of our time and am honoured to be a friend. Jen's deepening of her understanding of what it has meant to be a Maoiri on stolen land has been a constant place we meet and find empowerment and conversation. As an Irish woman on stolen land, Jen is someone I can go deep into it with. I am grateful to have Jen as a sister on this journey. And I can't wait to invite ye in to what our cups of tea are like.Support the show
We listen to some raw tape of Courtney Barnett before she pressed record for our interview. We are also joined by a true fan of her music—Paul Kondo, of The Podcast Gumbo Newsletter. Not too long ago we were "hotsauce" in that newsletter. Paul recommends three podcasts in each gumbo newsletter, with an added extra podcast mention, thrown in as hot sauce. Paul shares with us the first albums he coveted—The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary of The Band's final performance in San Francisco featuring friends such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell —still ranks high for him decades later; his favorite Courtney Barnett song; and how pleased he is that Under the Radar is that rare music podcast, that actually plays music. Please head to Bandcamp to purchase music from Jen Cloher's self titled album. "Courtney Barnett" is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Melbourne Australia, known for her often deadpan singing style and witty lyrics.Courtney grew up in a musical household, with both her brothers playing guitar around her. When she was just 10 years old she asked her brothers to show her some chords and eventually begged her parents to buy her a guitar and lessons. As a left-handed guitar player Courtney actually started out learning on a regular right-handed guitar with conventional stringing, this basically meant she learnt how to play guitar chords backwards, which she can still do to this day. In her early career she played with a couple of indie bands around Australia, before writing her own songs and putting out her debut EP in 2012.As usual, there is a lot more to know about this fascinating artist. Join musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley as they discuss Courtney's work, life, career and spin some of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

In the new episode of the RBP podcast, hosts Mark Pringle, Martin Colyer & Barney Hoskyns invite David Kamp to reminisce about The Rock Snob's Dictionary, already 15 years old but still wonderfully droll and still very on-the-money about people like, well, Mark, Martin & Barney. We ask David to explain the origins of Rock Snobbery and to revisit his epic Vanity Fair pieces about Sly Stone and the unlikely friendship 'twixt country icon Johnny Cash & producer Rick Rubin. The week's overaching theme of 1971 — inspired by Asif Kapadia's new Apple TV series — leads to discussion of Sly's dark masterpiece (and rock-snob staple) There's A Riot Goin' On, and then on to the Doors' redemptive swansong L.A. Woman, released three months before Jim Morrison's death in Paris. Clips from John Tobler's 1983 audio interview with surviving trio Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger & John Densmore prompt discussion of the Doors' legacy & status in the rock pantheon, after which Mark & Barney talk us through their highlights among the new articles in the RBP Library. These include great pieces on Bob Dylan, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Rough Trade, Some Bizzare's Stevo, the Stones' Keith Richards, plus a lovely 2008 conversation between Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and the mighty Bobby "Blue" Bland. Many thanks to special guest David Kamp; visit his website at davidkamp.com.Pieces discussed: The Rock Snob's Dictionary: An Introduction, Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin, Sly Stone's High Power, The Doors, The Doors audio, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Van der Graaf Generator, Stevo, Sylvester, Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, Johnny Cash, Rough Trade, Keith Richards, Mick Hucknall meets Bobby "Blue" Bland and Jen Cloher.

Many thanks to special guest David Kamp; visit his website at davidkamp.com. Pieces discussed: The Rock Snob's Dictionary: An Introduction, Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin, Sly Stone's High Power, The Doors, The Doors audio, Mad Dogs & Englishmen, Van der Graaf Generator, Stevo, Sylvester, Bob Dylan, Scott Walker, Johnny Cash, Rough Trade, Keith Richards, Mick Hucknall meets Bobby "Blue" Bland and Jen Cloher.

Back in 2004, Andrew Stafford published a book called Pig City. It captured the Brisbane music scene, the politics that fuelled this artistic reaction and so much more. From the Saints to Savage Garden, it became a bible in music history. Fifteen years passed, and Staffo finally returned with his follow up. This time a personal memoir, taking us through the life of a quiet fan who always felt on the outside, until he found music. Something to Believe In is it's title, and when I heard it was being published, I knew I wanted Staffo to Take 5. His theme was simple. Songs to believe in; the music that had been a saviour in his life. From Ramones to Do Ré Mi, Jen Cloher to Television, this is a heartfelt walk through a true fan's life. George Potter is a force to be reckoned with. She is the lead singer in the Byron Bay alt-rock band Moreton, which just released their new hit, “Circles”. Their second EP, The Dog Years, which will releasing in July, was produced by Matthew Neighbour (Matt Corby, Jen Cloher) and Alex Henriksson. Georgia also is the co-creator of Braer, the florist design company which started as a studio, workspace in Mullumbimby and now is a concept space in Bangalow that focus on exploring the true meaning of Slow Flowers here in Australia. On this episode, we discuss how her upbringing in remote Northern Queensland and Bribie Island imparted on her an intuitive love and desire to work with nature, exploring it both as a florist, and as a singer songwriter. We discuss how sadness elevated is sadness alleviated, and being vulnerable and talking about our mental health with those who are nearest and dearest can sometimes be the most difficult, but ultimately leads to healing and growth.
Seja talks to her guest Jen Cloher about what made her first love music, how nostalgia makes her emotional and why she started pursuing music instead of acting. They chat about how important vulnerability is in songwriting, the relatability of lyrics that tell a clear narrative, gender identity and sexism in music. Jen tells seja about how she keeps songwriting fresh with different tunings, mixing in Wilco’s studio and her feelings about handing over the reins of Milk Records. Jen’s story is illustrated by Jen sholakis (Drummer in Jen Cloher’s band and East Brunswick All Girls Choir). Australian artist Jen Cloher joins us in studio to talk about her musical career, running Milk! Records (the indie label Cloher and Courtney Barnett started in 2012), and her approach to the music business. Produced by Will Watts and Anna McClain. Engineered by Brent Asbury at Beta Petrol.
Jen Cloher Engineered by Jeremy Smith Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 15th August 2017 Originally from Adelaide, Cloher moved to Sydney to pursue a degree at NIDA After graduating, she instead decided to begin playing music. Permanent Marker, her debut EP, was released via Shiny Records in 2005. She then became Jen Cloher & The Endless Sea, which featured a rotating line up of musicians including Laura Jean, Jen Sholakis, Biddy Connor, Tom Healy, Geoffrey Dunbar, Michael Hubbard and Ross Calia. Jen Cloher & The Endless Sea released two full lengths, 2006’s Dead Wood Falls and 2009’s Hidden Hands, both which received critical acclaim and we’re toured extensively throughout the country. Once returning from a hiatus in 2012, Cloher began her own record label Milk Records. Along with facilitating her own releases, Milk is now home to Courtney Barnett, Fraser A. Gorman, Jade Imagine, Loose Tooth, The Finks and Hachiku, as well as her collaborative EP with Mia Dyson and Liz Stringer which was released and toured in 2013. Two more solo records have followed for Cloher, In Blood Memory in 2013 and her self titled fourth LP in 2017. The latter was recorded in a small town in South Gippsland approximately 130 km south-east of Melbourne called Jumbunna. It was produced by Greg Walker with guest contributors The Drones guitarist Dan Luscombe and Kurt Vile. Totally Mild Engineered by Alicia Saye and Paul Maybury Recorded at PBS FM Studio’s, Melbourne, 7th February 2018 Beginning as a solo project by singer/guitarist Elizabeth Mitchell, Totally Mild grew to include lead guitarist Zach Schneider, bass player Lehmann Smith, and drummer Ashley Bundang. The band played high profile supports for both Real Estate and Best Coast before their full-length debut, Down Time, arrived on Bedroom Suck Records in 2015. Touring ensued, and as well as Australia, the band played a string of dates throughout the UK and Europe and a trip to the US for SXSW, adding in stops in New York and LA. Recruiting new drummer Dylan Young, Totally Mild followed up in February 2018 with their second album Her, also released on Bedroom Suck and Fire Records in the UK. The album has received high praise from many critics.

Jen Cloher tells us about Adelaide in the 1980’s. This was not a place where you discovered gender as "a journey rather than a destination". It was a place you survived. Jen is an ARIA nominated artist and spent almost a decade as one of the country’s best folk leaning singer-songwriters. In 2013, the release of In Blood Memory marked a new era; backed by an all time trio of Courtney Barnett, Bones Sloane and Jen Sholakis, post 2013 Cloher is grittier, groovier and more devastatingly honest than ever before. Jen is an outspoken advocate for artist rights, a label boss and band-leader. In 2011 Jen launched a series of workshops called I Manage My Music, specifically tailored to assist the self-managed musician. She now manages Milk! Records the label started by Courtney Barnett in 2012, which won Best Label at the 2015 AIR Awards. Jen will be featured in the new Queerstories book which can be pre-ordered on Booktopia. Queerstories is an LGBTQIA+ storytelling night programmed by Maeve Marsden, with regular events in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
