My weekly german newsletter can be subscribed here steady. My english blog is hosted at Medium. I work as a keynote speaker, panelist and author. Feel free to contact me! **Tesla: progress that isn't progress at all** Ed impressively explained to me how Tesla has managed to squeeze new technologies such as the electric drive into an old, familiar product - the American car - in such a way that hardly anything changes. Long range, big battery, big car. The illusion of the future without people having to question their behavior. And that is precisely the problem. “Tesla sells us the old as something new - and people love it because they don't have to change anything.” I also often see that we in Germany - especially in the automotive industry - still think too much in traditional patterns. Instead of seizing the opportunities for real transformation, we cling to what has gone before. And still praise Elon Musk as a visionary, even though he is blocking precisely this change. **Electric cars are not automatically climate-friendly** Ed has raised an important point: The way we talk about e-mobility is preventing the transportation transition. If range is everything, we need huge batteries. And then e-cars are only for the rich. The real potential of electromobility lies in small, lightweight vehicles for short distances. And yes - maybe even an e-bike or a scooter. “The average trip in the USA is six miles long - why do we need 300 miles of range?” I also often ask myself why we don't manage to align mobility with real needs. Why do we still define freedom in terms of ownership - instead of shared, accessible and needs-based offers? **Autonomous driving: Wishful thinking with side effects** Another topic was Tesla's promise of “Full Self Driving”. For years, customers have been led to believe that their cars would soon drive themselves. But the technology still doesn't deliver. On the contrary: it brings with it new risks because drivers rely too much on the system - and react too slowly in an emergency. “Autopilot sounds like control, but in reality it makes us worse drivers.” I am convinced that autonomous driving can make sense - but not in a private car in the middle of the city center. I see much more potential in rural areas, for on-demand services or shared fleets. But this presupposes that we finally stop seeing the car as the universal solution to all mobility issues. **How technology is changing our view of mobility** What I appreciate about Ed's work: He doesn't oppose technology - but he demands that we finally see it for what it is: a tool. And not a promise of salvation. We have to ask ourselves: does this technology serve people - or do we serve it? “We have to learn again that technology should support us - not the other way around.” I too would like to see more urban spaces for people - not for parked cars. I dream of cities where we don't have to take a “vacation from the car”, but where car-free living is part of everyday life. And I know that there are no easy solutions. But it starts with the question: How do we really want to live? **My conclusion: we are not too small to make a difference** I know how often people say to me: “What am I supposed to change?” Or how often people who have visions are ridiculed. But that's exactly what drives me at *she drives mobility*: To show people that they are not alone - and that change is possible if we have the courage to think differently. “Change begins in the mind - and with the willingness to ask questions.” Thank you, Ed, for this honest, intelligent and inspiring conversation. And thank you to everyone who listened, thought and joined in the discussion. We need these voices more than ever.

Ed has been writing about Elon Musk for years, and he's been one of the billionaire's most astute critics since way back. We talked with Ed for our recent episode "Inside the Tesla Takedown Movement," about his involvement with the protest movement that has sprung up around the country at Tesla showrooms, targeting the destructive alliance between Musk and Donald Trump. Ed believes the protests are quite possibly the most effective tool we have right now to diminish Musk's influence and power, and to counter the Trump regime.  Subscribe on Patreon for access to the entire episode.

Tesla is the most exciting car company in a generation . . . but can it live up to the hype?Tesla Motors and CEO Elon Musk have become household names, shaking up the staid auto industry by creating a set of innovative electric vehicles that have wowed the marketplace and defied conventional wisdom. The company's market valuation now rivals that of long-established automakers, and, to many industry observers, Tesla is defining the future of the industry. But behind the hype, Tesla has some serious deficiencies that raise questions about its sky-high valuation, and even its ultimate survival.Tesla's commitment to innovation has led it to reject the careful, zero-defects approach of other car manufacturers, even as it struggles to mass-produce cars reliably, and with minimal defects. While most car manufacturers struggle with the razor-thin margins of mid-priced sedans, Tesla's strategy requires that the Model 3 finally bring it to profitability, even as the high-priced Roadster and Model S both lost money. And Tesla's approach of continually focusing on the future, even as commitments and deadlines are repeatedly missed, may ultimately test the patience of all but its most devoted fans.In Ludicrous, journalist and auto industry analyst Edward Niedermeyer lays bare the disconnect between the popular perception of Tesla and the day-to-day realities of the company—and the cars it produces. Blending original reporting and never-before-published insider accounts with savvy industry analysis, Niedermeyer tells the story of Tesla as it's never been told before—with clear eyes, objectivity and insight.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Elon Musk's gigantic, stainless steel, 1980s sci fi movie–inspired Cybertruck is starting to show up on city streets. Perhaps you've had the misfortune of seeing one rolling through your neighborhood. If not, you've almost certainly seen some of the vehicle's many truly epic fails on the Internet. The Cybertruck might not work very well, but it still appears to be wildly popular. More than two million people have deposited $250 to get in line for the opportunity to buy one. Journalist Ed Niedermeyer is the author of “Ludicrous: The Unvarnished Story of Tesla Motors.” In this episode, Ed joins us to analyze the Cybertruck as a cultural text and also just to revel in its overwhelming absurdity. What is the Cybertruck? And what does its apparent popularity say about who we are and where we are headed collectively? The CPUC agreement for AVs to operate in San Francisco includes a number of safety and operational requirements that the companies must meet. These requirements include: The AVs must be equipped with a variety of sensors and cameras to detect and avoid obstacles. The AVs must be able to operate in a variety of weather conditions. The AVs must have a safety driver on board who can take control of the vehicle if necessary. The AVs must be operated in a safe and responsible manner. The approval of the CPUC agreement is a major milestone for the development and deployment of AVs in San Francisco. It is the first time that AVs have been allowed to operate without a safety driver on board in a major U.S. city. The agreement is expected to help to accelerate the development and commercialization of AVs, and it could lead to the widespread deployment of AVs in San Francisco and other cities in the future.

Musk, Niedermeyer argues, is a huckster with a particular genius for selling implausible products and making old ideas feel futuristic and new. Tesla is the most exciting car company in a generation . . . but can it live up to the hype? Tesla Motors and CEO Elon Musk have become household names, shaking up the staid auto industry by creating a set of innovative electric vehicles that have wowed the marketplace and defied conventional wisdom. The company's market valuation now rivals that of long-established automakers, and, to many industry observers, Tesla is defining the future of the industry. But behind the hype, Tesla has some serious deficiencies that raise questions about its sky-high valuation, and even its ultimate survival. Tesla's commitment to innovation has led it to reject the careful, zero-defects approach of other car manufacturers, even as it struggles to mass-produce cars reliably, and with minimal defects. While most car manufacturers struggle with the razor-thin margins of mid-priced sedans, Tesla's strategy requires that the Model 3 finally bring it to profitability, even as the high-priced Roadster and Model S both lost money. And Tesla's approach of continually focusing on the future, even as commitments and deadlines are repeatedly missed, may ultimately test the patience of all but its most devoted fans. In Ludicrous, journalist and auto industry analyst Edward Niedermeyer lays bare the disconnect between the popular perception of Tesla and the day-to-day realities of the company—and the cars it produces. Blending original reporting and never-before-published insider accounts with savvy industry analysis, Niedermeyer tells the story of Tesla as it's never been told before—with clear eyes, objectivity and insight.

Recently almost every business has brought up how they strive to be more sustainable and eco friendly.. But what does that really mean? The Co-Founders of The Good Side Danielle Selig and Anna Niedermeyer have built their brand around the belief that you can be sustainable without compromising the customer's experience. The Good Side was created just a little over a year ago while two friends grabbed a cup of coffee. Since then, these two have seriously set the bar high for putting sustainability and the consumer first. Below you will see a glimpse of what was discussed but when I say "plus so much more" I mean it! You will learn: (Plus so much more!) What goes into naming a new brand. The non negotiables that went into creating their products. How outsourcing can help your business run more smoothly and what they decided to outsource. The difference between prelaunch and the launch. You will learn what goes into both and how it can be challenging if your skill set is more equipped for one vs. the other. You will also lean how to navigate the learning curves. What goes into finding a good manufacture and that it is okay to stand your ground and fire when needed. How this brand continues to stay professional and still give their personal touches, like having conversations with their customers and asking for real feedback. What you can do as the consumer to hold other brands accountable. You are going to hear several ways that you can tweak your business, products and packaging to make it more sustainable and eco friendly. Why they decided to remove certain wording like "anti-aging" from their marketing. Featured guest: Rob Niedermeyer, innovation teacher, Reynoldsburg City Schools This is Mr. Niedermeyer's eleventh year teaching.  He earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Ecology from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science in Education from Ashland University.  Niedermeyer developed the STEM Middle at Baldwin Road Junior High Sustainable Outdoor Innovation Learning (SOIL) Lab.  The SOIL Lab was the district's first middle level, science-based elective course that focuses on sustainability, urban agriculture, and eliminating food insecurity.  Niedermeyer is now launching a new engineering and design class at Reynoldsburg's Hannah Ashton Middle School (HAMS) Innovation Lab makerspace.  In the Innovation Lab, he pushes students to become producers, not just consumers.  Students use the tools on hand to develop solutions to real problems within their own community.  Niedermeyer believes that real problems are more important to learning than isolated content standards, and works with his team to develop authentic learning experiences for students through a transdisciplinary  problem based learning (TPBL) model. Because of his commitment to authentic learning experiences for his students, Niedermeyer was named the Columbus Parent and ThisWeek News' 2019 Middle Level Teacher of the Year Award winner, 2020 State Board District 9 Teacher of the Year, and 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year State Finalist.  Check it out: Click here to see photos of Niedermeyer's Innovation Lab makerspace at Hannah Ashton and Soil Lab at STEM Middle, as well as some of the projects his students have been working on.In this episode:"The biggest problem was, how are we going to take a class that was 90% hands-on with tools and other pieces of equipment and do that in a virtual world." 1:45 - Makerspace basics: Traditional shop class tools with a high-tech twist 2:20 - Designing for others and creating projects that liven up the school space 3:15 - Teaching life-long 'soft skills'  4:00 - Focusing on the design cycle with digital tools 4:45 - The 'Aha' moment in hands-on learning through remote and hybrid education models. 5:40 - "The kids who are working at home, I am then their hands here." 6:30 - Re-thinking best practices in light of the COVID curveballs for a hands-on class 7:25 - The successes and failures figuring out how to make virtual hands-on learning work 8:30 - The unexpected opportunities created by teaching in a pandemic: Communication and collaboration 9:30 - Creating the Urban Agriculture and Environmental Science Lab (aka the Soil Lab) at STEM Middle 10:45 - Letting students design the Soil Lab  11:45 - Teaching the problem solving and critical thinking with hands-on lessons in the Soil Lab 12:40 - The role of agriculture in Reynoldsburg students' lives 13:15 - Shaping students' world views through urban agriculture and growing food for those in need during the pandemic 14:30 - Awards and recognition: Building on the new connections to improve experiences for students 16:30 - Looking ahead to the future of the Innovation Lab at Hannah Ashton "I think I really focus on the 'soft skills' here - the critical thinking, the problem solving. It's great to know how to use a laser cutter, but I'm more interested in can they actually problem solve if they don't know what's happening. If they have a mistake in their design, if the machine isn't working correctly, how can they problem solve and use the resources they have to get the machine up and running again to actually make the physical product? Creating their physical product is great, they love seeing it; but for me, the best part is seeing them work through the process of actually getting to the end product."Connect with us: Email educationmatters@ohea.org with your feedback or ideas for future Education Matters topics Like OEA on Facebook Follow OEA on Twitter Follow OEA on Instagram Get the latest news and statements from OEA here Learn more about where OEA stands on the issues  Keep up to date on the legislation affecting Ohio public schools and educators with OEA's Legislative Watch About us: The Ohio Education Association represents more than 120,000 teachers, faculty members and support professionals who work in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities to help improve public education and the lives of Ohio's children.
