In a previous episode, Lyssa Adkins spoke highly of Luke Hohmann and FirstRoot. FirstRoot lets students work with an actual budget, to come up with ideas, and make those ideas a reality. What do they need to make that concept come to life? What happens when it's created, who's going to clean up?Luke Hohmann joins us today to talk about FirstRoot, and what the impact and potential are of participatory budgeting. But by giving away budget, does FirstRoot not impact its own business model? Listen to this week's episode to hear Luke's insights on business models, too! What you'll discover in this show:- Participatory budgeting gives a whole new impulse to students and financials - FirstRoot is a generationally timely company, that would not have worked in the past - Designing business models could use a makeoverSpeakers: Luke HohmannFounder at FirstRootFounder and CEO of FirstRoot, Inc. How much of your core and legacy systems are keeping your organization from seizing market opportunities and differentiating their business? Director of Pivotal Labs Sydney, David Julia, offers advice on how companies can deprecate, modernize and get more value out of monolithic legacy systems that are often where the heart of each business beats. One way is the strangler approach where you iteratively decommission legacy apps and start “to cut bits of your monolithic application off and gracefully retire that.” Julia also recounts the real-life story of how one team successfully rewrote a legacy health insurance system so complex that a tiny mistake could put millions of dollars at risk. His advice for businesses looking to modernize their legacy systems is “Start small. Build quality into your system. Evolve your systems over time.” Accenture | SolutionsIQ’s Adam Asch hosts at Agile Australia in Sydney. Sarah Traynor is a transformation lead at one of the largest banks in Australia, which has followed the lead of ING in executing a big bang Agile transformation. The scaling effort – involving 9,000 people – was staggered, but the vision and leadership have been clear from the very beginning. Traynor says “engaging people in the story from the onset and being transparent” is very important. Another major shift for the bank was ensuring everyone was aligned and shared the same values around what it means to lead from where they are in the organization. The bank set 5 new behavioral expectations about leading people: Be curious Create shared clarity Empower others Develop people selflessly Connect with empathy Accenture | SolutionsIQ’s Adam Asch hosts at Agile Australia in Sydney. I was just following the Agile Australia conference hashtag (#agileaus) on Twitter when Sandy's name came up. When I read about her conference talk is saw words like self-organizing teams. OK. I know that one. That's what scrum teams do well. But then I saw the term self-selection. Self-selection? Does than mean I can put myself on my team at work I want? Mostly, yes, according to Sandy Mamoli. And Sandy knows about self-selection. She wrote the book on it, "Creating Great Teams: How Self-Selection Lets People Excel." Obviously, I had to get her on the show to talk about it. Sandy Mamoli is an Agile coach and founder of Nomad8, a small but perfectly formed Agile consultancy in Auckland, New Zealand. She's a former Olympian, a geek, a gadget junkie, international keynote speaker. She has a masters degree in artificial intelligence and knows quite a lot about Agile. As you can tell from the interview, I didn't know anything. This interview truly was about me asking Sandy a bunch of questions to learn how self-selection is creating organizations of the future. Pete Young played a key role in leading the transformation of Australia Post’s digital consumer experience. The journey to transformation at this 210-year-old institution began when they focused on fixing one specific problem: 15% of the customer base consistently missing first time delivery of a parcel. Young also shares how, in two years, focus a single metric resulted in a 7% increase in successful first-time deliveries – a significant impact for an organization with 5 million digital customer accounts. Learn how his team shifted focus from measuring outcomes instead of outputs, the importance of leadership support, and how Young works with the not-so-Agile parts of the enterprise. Hey Everyone and welcome to this week's episode of The Standup Podcast where we'll be going over and talking about Martin Fowler's "State of Agile 2018", which Martin presented at Agile Australia. You can read the transcript of his talk on Martin's site here or view a video of it on YouTube. We have a great spirited discussion in this episode where we cover the key points Martin lays out in his talk, give some additional perspective on the current state of Agile, and our thoughts on how things can move forward and improve. We hope you enjoy and let us know YOUR thoughts!
Last Spring, Martin Fowler gave a talk at Agile Australia called "The State of Agile Software in 2018." (A transcript of Fowler’s talk can be found using the link provided below.) During the talk, he mentions “post-agile.” It is a phrase I had previously heard mention of here and there by folks who tend to be pretty deep with agile and who are frustrated for one reason or another by how it is being (mis)used by others. I spent time time researching what “post-agile” actually means. What I found was a wide range of explanations, but no clear, definitive answer. The more I dug into it, the more I found myself gravitating towards my own inner explanation. Since I didn’t really want to end up mansplaining the term to myself, I thought it might be a good idea to seek some professional help. In this podcast you’ll hear a conversation between Dhaval Panchal, Michael Tardiff, and myself where we explore the topic of “post-agile”—what it actually means and whether or not it is something you need to worry about. Dhaval and Michael are deeply seasoned agile coaches who are also really fun to interview. Talking with them always provides me with a new perspective and deeper clarity on things. That was definitely the case with this discussion. Hopefully it will be valuable to you as well. This podcast is our conversation exploring the topic of what “post-agile” actually means and whether or not you need to worry about it. his Spring at Agile Australia 2018, Martin Fowler, Chief Scientist at Thoughtworks and Agile Manifesto co-author gave a Keynote titled "The State of Agile Software in 2018". He recently published the text of his talk here. (If you refer video, you can find it on InfoQ.) His Keynote centered around 3 specific concerns with the current state of Agile, the first of which was The Agile Industrial Complex and imposing process on teams. In this episode of SoundNotes, LeadingAgile CEO, Mike Cottmeyer shares his thoughts on the Agile Industrial Complex and some of the problems it can create. During the interview we dig into why the challenges come into play and what we can do to try and resolve them. While I was in Australia in June to keynote the Agile Australia conference I had the privilege to interview Troy Magennis. When I first heard Troy speak at a conference years ago I remember how impressed I was with his deep understanding of the mathematics involved in forecasting. After listening to this episode I think you’ll be equally impressed. Troy is the founder of Focused Objective, a consultancy that helps companies with forecasting, portfolio planning, risk management and metric selection. We talk about why 3 to 7 recent samples is often better than thousands of samples from last year, how we need several opposing metrics to prevent local optimization and how we’ve lost the art of post mortems. Troy has a ton of resources that are freely available for you to download and try out. For example, you might like the team dashboard Troy has built. After listening to the episode you can use his tools to take your forecasting to the boss level.
