Welcome to The Hangar Z Podcast, brought to you by Vertical Helicasts. This is part three of a three-part series. This series is important for all public safety aviation units, because we discuss the audit released by the LA City Controller's office on the LAPD Air Support Division. The LAPD Air Support Division is well equipped to deal with and respond to the report to justify its program based on the stats it keeps and the details of its program. We many times have discussed how air support programs are the low-hanging fruit when it comes to politicians and bean counters. This three-part series will talk about LAPD's air support program and how what they do will help shape the way your agency keeps track of stats and program information. To discuss the audit we brought in Mike Daly, who retired from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) after nearly 34 years of service. If you ever went to LAPD's Air Crew course, you most likely heard Daly's course and his legendary one liners. Daly grew up in Latham, New York, enlisting in the military immediately after graduating high school in 1976. After his discharge from active duty, he returned to New York and attended college. In May 1983, he was hired by the LAPD and completed nearly 34 years of service with the below listed assignments.Daly worked his way to Air Support, having worked assignments in patrol, including 77th. He was a metro K9 handler, worked rampart as Gang Unit OIC sergeant and watch commander before he was selected to the air support division as a watch commander and command pilot. Daly also completed 24 years of military service with the U. S. Army in both the active and reserve components. SSG Daly served over seven years on active duty including an 18-month combat tour in Iraq.In this episode, we discuss using stats to prove your aviation program is essential and not a luxury. We discuss some of the academic studies that document, through empirical evidence, that air support units reduce crime. Lastly, we discuss the use of social media to promote aviation programs. Thank you to our sponsors Bell, Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing and SHOTOVER.

Welcome to episode 64 of The Hangar Z Podcast. I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate Jeff's birthday than by bringing his *childhood best friend and enemy onto the show. What's really fun about this episode is that Jeff had absolutely no clue who the mystery guest was until he came into the interview. The guest and Jeff worked and tormented each other at Riverside PD, where he worked his way through the department. He worked patrol as an officer and a field training officer, he was selected to air support as a TFO which is where I met The Guest back in 2015 as he was putting a proposal together for Riverside PD to purchase Churchill Navigation's Augmented Reality Mapping software. The Guest left Air Support for a promotion to Detective in 2017 where he got to work gang investigations and auto theft. The Guest is the only person I know in law enforcement who took a voluntary demotion so he could come back to air support as a pilot in 2020.During our conversation we get to hear the two of them roast each other pretty much non stop. Mixed into the roast is a really great conversation about the power of networking, recruitment and retention in air support as well as creating value for your unit. We appreciate all who support this podcast, including Metro Aviation who are doing good things with awesome people. Thank you to SHOTOVER Systems. Most everyone already knows SHOTOVER, which was formerly Churchill Navigation for their Augmented Reality Mapping software. Shotover has integrated the next generation of that software into the M2 camera system. One of the coolest parts of this new camera system is that the 6 axis imaging system has eliminated “gimbal lock” when flying over an object. The M2 is a definite game-changer for public safety aviation.I would also like to thank our supporters on Patreon. Lastly, we just launched our channel on YouTube. Our goal is to take 5-10 min segments from each interview that contains valuable insight and post them on our channel. Do us a favor and subscribe to our channel on YouTube. A link to our channel is available on our newly updated website hangarzpodcast.com.*They were not childhood best friends. How one woman's inspiration to pray for her priest launched an archdiocese-wide movement of spiritual support (0:01) Fr. John Kopson, pastor of St. Anne Parish in Warren, describes a homily he once heard describing the priesthood as analogous to the military. If priests are the soldiers of the Church, the “boots on the ground,” they can only be effective if they have “air support” — i.e., the prayers of the faithful uplifting and supporting them. (2:36) Mindy DeWitt, a member of Divine Child Parish in Dearborn, recalls a realization she had one day about how hard priests work and how much they sacrifice for their flocks. The thought stuck with DeWitt, who made it her personal mission to pray for priests and make little sacrifices for them, too. (5:10) After reading a Vatican document about the importance of Eucharistic adoration and holy hours to pray for the sanctification of priests, DeWitt contacted Fr. Kopson with an idea for a new apostolate, “Parishioners for Priests,” that would be devoted to spiritually adopting priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit. (6:41) Through the apostolate, DeWitt and her husband printed prayer cards, launched social media pages and developed a “Priest of the Day” initiative to pray, by name, for one priest of the archdiocese each day. (7:25) DeWitt describes the “Adopt a Priest” initiative, which invites parishioners to anonymously pray for a specific priest, chosen at random. The priest is given a card telling him he's been spiritually adopted, and receives the consolation of knowing someone — even if he doesn't know who — is praying for him every day. (8:22) Fr. Kopson describes what it's like as a priest to be spiritually “adopted,” including the great sense of peace knowing his ministry — as hard as it is sometimes — isn't being undertaken alone. (10:05) DeWitt describes the overwhelming response to the program from both parishioners and priests since it was launched in 2017. (12:31) The narrator talks about how the program is especially relevant in 2022, when the Archdiocese of Detroit is undertaking a Year of Prayer for Priestly Vocations. Fr. Kopson says the devil wants to discourage men from considering the priesthood, but that a year of prayer is exactly what's needed. (16:38) Fr. Kopson issues a “call to arms” to parishioners of the archdiocese to spiritually support their priests through prayer, sacrifice and love. We all need prayers, we all need to have a healthy relationship with God. The only way to do that right is to talk to Him. And when we are in trouble, or facing hard and challenging times to be able to ask for prayer. Even Paul asked for prayer, don't you think we should too?

With over two decades of experience, Mark Cooter and Alec Bierbauer have been called the “Wright Brothers” of the U.S. drone warfare program. They were the ones – in January 2000 – who were tasked with finding terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. They had nine months to carry out their mission. This week's episode of Borne the Battle explores the history of drone warfare, which dates back to the 1990s, when drones were used as relatively simple, short-range surveillance tools. Here, Cooter and Bierbauer discuss how their team located bin Laden a full year before the events of 9/11 (and why they couldn't take action against him), how weapons were first added to drones, and the ways in which drone technology has evolved over the last 20 years. They also talk about the psychological stress endured by today's drone operators and caution against minimizing the combat trauma faced by pilots and support crews.“It could very easily be perceived as a video game,” said Bierbauer in the podcast, “and it's not.”U.S. rules of engagement hold that military forces could only attack an enemy target if they had “eyes on” – that is, if the target was under direct observation. Political considerations also meant that American troops could not be stationed in a friendly “host” country. Further complicating matters, manned spy planes could not be deployed unless they were also supported by search and rescue personnel, in case the aircraft was shot down. Using unmanned drones provided a solution to all of these problems: They didn't require the presence of troops on the ground and could monitor targets from a distance without any risk to a pilot or crew.Borne the Battle Veteran of the Week:Army Veteran Wendall Robert Cram Additional Links: VA, Civil Air Patrol chaplain corps to support families of Veterans at national cemeteries Most recent VA Secretary press conference VA delays electronic health record implementation date due to COVID-19 surge in Ohio

Air Support in America's Finest CitySince 1986, the crews of 'ABLE' have been providing top-notch air support to the officers and citizens of America's Finest City and on our next episode of the Hangar Z Podcast, we'll be speaking with one of their pilots, Trevor Riley. Hey Sister! I am so excited about today's episode, as I've been waiting so long to share it. For most women, having a baby is a wonderful and joyful time. For some, it can be a very stressful, anxious time. It can also produce something that one might not expect – depression. Many women will experience “baby blues” following childbirth that usually last a few days up to 6 weeks. Sometimes, a more severe form occurs called Postpartum depression – symptoms include depressed mood, sleep issues, crying all the time, feelings of worthlessness, intrusive thoughts, plus several other symptoms. This period also increases the risk of suicide or suicide ideation. On this episode of Motherhood Unfiltered, I talk with Amy Koppelman, author, and director of the upcoming movie, Mouthful of Air. Amy and I share our individual journey of experiencing postpartum depression as well as, imposter syndrome, and not being afraid to ask for help. We also discuss her novel, A Mouthful of Air which inspired this powerful movie, which hits theatres on October 29th! (You need to see this movie) Amy Koppelman is the author of three critically acclaimed novels: A Mouthful of Air, I Smile Back, and Hesitation Wounds, a 2016 Independent Publisher Book Award winner. She produced and co-adapted the film adaptation of I Smile Back, starring Sarah Silverman, who received a SAG award nomination for the role. The film premiered at the Sundance, Toronto, and Deauville film festivals. Her latest film, A Mouthful of Air, is her first undertaking as a screenwriter, director, producer, and illustrator. Amy lives in New York City with her family. She is an outspoken advocate for women's mental health. Listen in as we discuss: Amy's passion for storytelling and what inspired her to write the book 18 years ago? The reasons why more people don't talk about Postpartum Depression and why we need to get the help we need, share with others, and don't be afraid to take medication to help ourselves and ultimately, our family. We want to keep our kids safe and protected but we put some of the pressure upon ourselves. #47 - Today’s topic is about how to decrease stress and how to consciously take that pause before you react to something emotionally or physically. This is such an important life skill to learn for all ages and a great way to do this is through yoga. Yoga is not all about getting your body into contortions. At its core, it is about connecting breath to movement, focus, control, and meditation. These are powerful tools to help you direct your mind and your perspective.Speaking on this topic is my guest today Deputy Chief Sasha Larkin of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Sasha is a remarkable woman; a wife, a mother, and when this interview was recorded, she was Capt. Sasha Larkin but has since been promoted to Deputy Chief where she oversees the Homeland Security Division that encompasses the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center, SWAT, Air Support, K-9, ARMOR (All Hazards Regional Multi-Agency Operations and Response), and Intelligence Section. That is a full plate and there is no doubt that there is a lot of responsibility and stress that comes with it. So how does she do it? A major asset is her yoga practice. She has been practicing and teaching yoga for over 20 years and I think that it is safe to say that Sasha is proof of how yoga can enhance and balance your life.Show notes for this episode can be found at:howtolife.com/047

Okay, we’re gonna power down on the technical side of self-care this week, in this amazing interview with Dr. James Lavalle, arguably one of the top experts on supplements. Because I honestly want to know—do they really work? Or are they just fluff? But first, I begin with my essay, Ten Meditation Tips for Extremely Busy Women. I wrote this a few years back when I really got that it’s impossible for some of us to slow the heck down. And, as usual, that begins with me. So here’s what I learned…. In talking to Dr. Lavalle, I was blown away by the depth of his knowledge. He is the real deal, ladies. And he has a lot to say about optimizing women’s health. (Also, I do want to remind all listeners to check in with your own physician before beginning any course of supplements, just to be safe.) Here’s what I learned: The biggest myths around supplements What is the correct way to determine which ones you need The truth about how botanicals interact with prescription medications Women’s greatest health challenges The perfect blend of supplements we all need … and why The myth around green drinks What nutrients are often depleted by your meds and why … Enjoy my friends! The Iraq Study Group Report's Recommendations Sections gives a total of 79 recommendations for how the US should proceed in Iraq. Diplomatically, the US should do more by launching the New Diplomatic Offensive accompanied by the creation of a Support Group (full of regional and world powers) in order to discuss and compromise on a variety of issues. This support group should include Iran and Syria because, even though the White House has problems with their respective governments, both countries would benefit from negotiating since both countries put a lot of effort into Iraq. Also, the US should threaten withdrawal whenever the Iraqi Government does not reach its benchmarks on time (these include the ratification of the Petroleum Law, the Militia Law, etc.). Even if it does reach these benchmarks, though, the US should begin a gradual rollback of forces. First, active combat forces should be moved into Iraqi Army Brigade protection roles, Iraqi Army training roles, and Iraqi Army support roles (Special Operations, Air Support, etc.). Then, these training forces should also be slowly pulled out of Iraq as the Iraqi security forces gain more power. By early 2008, the US should be 100% training and 0% occupation. The Iraq Study Group is a bipartisan commission led by James Baker and Lee Hamilton. This episode summarizes the recommendations section of the Iraq Study Group Report. The previous episode featured the Iraq Study Group's assessment of the current situation.
