There's an interesting moment that happens nowadays. You're on your phone, you're scrolling through reels of cat videos and your cousin's baby's first birthday cake smash, and then… there it is. A person you've never met, standing in perfect golden-hour light, wearing an outfit that makes you stop and think, “Hey, maybe I could pull that off”. Then, before you even realize you're shopping, you've clicked through, checked your size, and added it to your cart. It didn't start in a store. You didn't search for a brand or a product. You saw a person. And although you don't know them, you trust them. And that trust has become the new currency in the rapidly expanding business of Influencing. The social media influencer, once a niche personality with a smartphone and a few followers, has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry, reshaping retail and redefining the relationship between brands and their audiences all over the world. To help us better understand the impact that these content creators are having on our business we'll first chat with our very own Vice President of Marketing for Nordstrom, Marie Langhout-Franklin. After that we'll explore the broader landscape of influencing and retail with a super talented entrepreneur by the name of Amber Venz Box, co-founder and President of an incredibly powerful social retailing platform called LTK. To wrap it all up you'll hear from an actual full-time influencer by the name of Sara Walker. Thanks for tuning in to episode 85. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? There is a Harvard of influencing. Yes, you read that correctly. And we're going there...or, at least we're applying. Until recently Instagram was for looking, not buying. But one very savvy tech founder helped to solve that disconnect; a woman, naturally. Amber Venz Box is a 34 year old mother of four and the founder of RewardStyle and LikeToKnowIt. In the past decade, her companies have driven $8 billion in sales for brands. This week, with Amber's help, Jo applies to become a RewardStyle influencer and tries to figure out if her life is shoppable. Shoppability is a new term, one that even academics are now using. But finding out if your life as a mother is shoppable is like asking which of your kids is more commercial. And that's where this all starts to get a little uncomfortable. Valentine’s Day is coming up. And Amber Venz Box knows a thing or two about making relationships work … at work. She’s the president of RewardStyle -- the company she founded with her then-boyfriend, now-husband Baxter. Amber started out as a personal shopper. But she realized that people were buying the products she recommended on her blog on their own … and cutting her out of a commission. So in 2011, Amber and Baxter started RewardStyle. It connects brands and influencers so both sides can benefit. In 2017, they drove over a billion dollars in sales. And launched their app, which attracted a million users in just 9 months. But building her company hasn’t been easy. On the Couch, she talks to us about being an introverted leader, how to network, and what it’s like to build a business with your SO.
It was a decision to monitise her fashion blog that allowed Amber Venz Box to leave her former career as a personal shopper, but she soon come to discover she’d started something of a tech revolution. Frustrated that her blog was generating sales for retailers, but not for her, Venz Box and her then-boyfriend (now-husband) Baxter Box launched rewardStyle; a monetisation solution for retailers and content creators. From a one-woman operation in 2011, her business has grown into a global network of 16,000 influencers, generating £1b USD in sales for its 4,000 retail partners and over half a million brands. A true force to be reckoned with, Venz Box has ranked on the Business of Fashion 500 power list, Forbes' 30 Under 30, and been named Glamour’s ‘Woman of the Year’ for technology. It has been an insane year for Amber Venz Box. In the course of 12 months, her online-shopping app, LIKEtoKNOW.it has drummed up more traffic than Pinterest, Facebook, Tumblr or Twitter did in the same length of time... A few years earlier Amber and her boyfriend now husband, Baxter Box, had revolutionized the fashion world when they figured out how to do the near impossible: easily monetize the content of fashion blogs. Amber Venz Box, the Co-Founder of both rewardStyle and LIKEtoKNOW.it, has created two platforms that have not only shifted our behavior as consumers but have also disrupted an entire industry. Her idea that brewed in a coffee shop and grew in a tiny apartment has exploded into a multi-national business with 250+ employees across eight offices around the world. In 2011 Amber, who had just started her blog VENZEDITS.com, and her boyfriend at the time (now husband) Baxter Box, co-founded RewardStyle to provide a way for bloggers to monetize their shopping referrals, similar to personal stylists. Fast forward to today, and rewardStyle has 20,000 content creators monetizing their influence and 4,000 global retailers marketing directly to this generation’s social media shopper. RewardStyle is now the dominant source of mobile referral traffic for some of the most successful retail brands in the world. Not to mention, LIKEtoKNOW.it, the platform she co-founded in 2014 that this year alone will be responsible for $300 million in purchases by consumers from LIKEtoKNOW.it influencers. She's done all of this whilst juggling being a mother of two children, with another due later this year. I wanted to know how she did it! Let's StartUp!
A few short years ago, Amber started a fashion blog.
