As an American, you can't help but root for Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger to succeed. His vision to bring semiconductor manufacturing leadership back to the United States is more than just a quaint nationalistic sentiment. Rather it's a strategic imperative for the country, its military, global competitiveness and access to future technological innovations in the AI era. But his strategy is dependent upon the success of Intel both as a designer and a leading manufacturer of advanced chips. As such this choice puts Intel in a multi-front war with highly capable leaders in several markets, including names like AMD, NVIDIA, AWS, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Tesla and other chip designers…even perhaps OpenAI. As well Intel competes with with established manufacturers like Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung. Moreover, Intel's business model has been disrupted by Arm which has created a volume standard powered by the iPhone and mobile technologies. Finally, China, Inc. looms as a long-term competitor further underscoring the imperative. But the trillion dollar questions are: 1) What are the odds that Intel's strategy succeeds; and 2) Are there more viable alternative strategies for both Intel and the United States? In this Breaking Analysis we try to address these uncertainties and to do so we welcome Ben Bajarin, CEO and Principal Analyst at Creative Strategies.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last month, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger made a prediction about how the world will vie for resources in the coming decades. For years, Gelsinger said, much of geopolitical relations have turned on access to oil reserves. But in the future, he thinks a more important factor will be where microchips are made. Intel is a prominent figure in the computer chip business, but some 90 per cent of the world's most advanced chips are currently made by one company in Taiwan. And according to Chris Miller, if the TSMC plant in Taiwan was destroyed the disruption of everything from smartphones to cars could be the biggest manufacturing shock since the Great Depression. Miller is an Associate Professor of International History at Tufts University, and he recently released the book Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology.

While Intel's 20 billion dollar investment in two new semiconductor factories in Central Ohio is a huge win for the Buckeye state; it is also a huge win for America. Listen now, to hear from President Biden, and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who explain why will not only help ease the chip shortage that has caused manufacturing supply chain disruptions, but will also help protect our national security. You will also hear from Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Ohio State University President, Christina Johnson, and more, about how this massive new project will unfold over the next three years, and about the renewed prosperity and hope it can bring to a state that has seen thousands of good paying, high-tech manufacturing jobs moved to places like China and Korea over the past 40 years. If Intel's overall vision is fulfilled; they say their initial $20 billion dollar investment could swell to more than $100 billion dollars over the next decade. But, that depends to a large degree, on new federal legislation that would provide $52 billion dollars to the semiconductor industry, in the form of direct funding and tax incentives. That, officials say, could potentially spur other companies to follow suit in "re-shoring" manufacturing jobs that can help rebuild the US economy not from the top down, as has been the focus since the Reagan era; but instead; from the bottom up, by rebuilding the fortunes of American workers.

Moore's Law is a theory about the availability of transistors on integrated circuits. In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore observed that the number of transistors per square inch on an integrated circuit had doubled each year since its invention. Moore predicted that this trend would continue until the mid-2020s. The process of adding transistors involves shrinking the relative size of each transistor by half to create room rather than increasing the size of the circuit itself. This is why computer engineers have been able to create devices over time that are simultaneously smaller and more powerful than their predecessors. Join me where we'll talk about Moore's Law and why I believe it's possible to achieve, BUT it's no longer about grit, tenacity and hard work. The time is calling for a level up of mindset, attitude, values and practices, which is what I believe is needed everywhere for companies to succeed. I'll be discussing what needs to change for an organization like Intel / CEO Pat Gelsinger to achieve this feat. 國際媒體相關報導 ●CNBC:〈Maritime historian sees 'ominous' signs that the Suez Canal blockage may take time to fix〉(海事歷史學家認為蘇伊士運河堵塞,需要一些時間來解決,是個不祥的跡象) ●WSJ華爾街日報:〈Hopes Fade for Quickly Freeing Ship From Suez Canal〉(希望迅速將船從蘇伊士運河中解救出來,但似乎越來越不可能);小標:〈Rescue teams have made progress, but authorities were wary of offering a timeline for unsticking the Ever Given〉(救援隊雖然取得了進展,但有關當局對提供一個明確解決的時間表,表示謹慎) ●New York Times紐約時報:〈” Very Big Problem.”Giant Ship in the Suez Remains Stuck.〉(這是一個非常大的問題。 國際媒體相關報導 ●Nikkei Asia日經亞洲:〈Intel challenges Taiwan's TSMC in chip foundry business〉(英特爾在晶圓代工方面挑戰台灣的台積電);小標:〈US tech titan earmarks $20bn for plants in Arizona to woo Apple and Qualcomm〉(美國科技巨頭斥資200億美元在亞利桑那建立工廠,以吸引蘋果和高通的訂單) ●WSJ華爾街日報:〈TSMC Still Has the Edge Over Intel in Brewing Foundry Fight〉(台積電在這場日益激烈的晶圓代工戰役中,仍保有優勢);小標:〈Intel is moving in, but the incumbent will be tough to dislodge〉(英特爾決定進軍,但既有玩家很難被打敗) ●Market Watch:〈Intel must execute its new strategy perfectly to win back investors〉(英特爾必須完美執行其新戰略,能贏回投資者) ;小標:〈Stock market investors, burned before, will be holding CEO Pat Gelsinger to his word.〉(之前受傷的股票市場投資人,緊盯Pat Gelsinger許下的承諾。) 上面還有兩排白色字體,大字寫的是「Bright side of the moonshot」(探月計畫的光明面),小字則是「Science after the pandemic」(科學與疫情)。 Powered by Firstory Hosting
