My Guest: Derek Sivers is the founder of CD Baby and author of "Hell Yeah or No" and "Useful Not True." He shared how he graduated from Cal Berkeley in two years instead of four because the "standard pace for chumps" - a lesson that shaped his entire career of institutional skepticism and unconventional thinking. From creating viral shipping emails to understanding why explorers make bad leaders, Derek shares why being busy means being out of control, how your first thought is an obstacle to your best work, and why you can't predict what the world will want from you until you try everything and listen closely to what it's telling you. Notes: No Speed Limit – Most things are paced so the slowest person can keep up. If you're driven and motivated, you can go so much faster than the standard pace. I graduated from Berkeley in two years by learning four semesters of harmony in one hour. "The standard pace is for chumps. You can do so much better than that." Question the Standard Process – When someone says you must go through usual channels or something will take a certain time, assume there's probably a hack. Develop institutional skepticism - there's usually a better way than how most people do it. Create Opportunities, Don't Wait for Them – You don't have to wait until a company is hiring. If you can see how to benefit them, walk in and show them what you can do for free first. Alan Tepper made Warner Brothers more money than anyone that year by just showing up with a plan. Make Everything Valuable to Others – The starving artist spends all their time on work valuable to them but not to others. Use money as a neutral measure - if you can make money with your art, it ensures what you're doing is valuable to other people. "It's almost impossible to predict what the world will want from you... Keep yourself out there and listen closely to what the world is telling you it wants from you." Stand Out by Being Different – Don't imitate what everyone else is doing. I wrote a silly shipping email in 10 minutes that became one of the most viral emails ever mentioned in business books. Ask yourself constantly: What has nobody done before? The First Follower Creates the Movement – We focus on the shirtless dancing guy, but the first follower is what made everything happen. Until then, people kept their distance from the freak. If you find someone doing something great, follow them and show others how to follow. Every Sentence Must Matter – My books are 90-100 pages, but start as 1,000-page rough drafts. I spend 1-2 years full-time chopping every sentence that doesn't absolutely need to be there. "I'm not gonna put a single sentence out into the world that doesn't need to be there." Make every word count - eliminate everything that doesn't add value. Hell Yeah or No is Context-Dependent – This tool is for when you're overwhelmed with options and need to raise the bar. Straight out of college, say yes to everything because opportunities are like lottery tickets. Once something rewards you, then say no to other things and double down. Busy Means Out of Control – "Busy to me implies out of control. You're busy if you've let other people shove shit into your schedule." Leave space instead of filling it - that time to think is what creates valuable insights others don't have time to develop. Your First Thought is an Obstacle – Don't honor the thought that came first. In brainstorming, acknowledge the first idea, then keep going - don't stop at two or three. Even silly ideas can seed great ones you'd never reach without that stepping stone. All Beliefs Are a Myth – People worshiped Zeus for centuries; now we call it mythology. But we say our own beliefs are true while others' are superstitions. I expected China to be awful from American news, but found it wonderful - question what you've been told. Use Prejudice as Your Compass – If you notice you're prejudiced against something, that's exactly what you should explore. Burning Man sounds awful to me; therefore, I should probably go. Steer into your biases to overcome them and gain new perspectives. Explorers Make Terrible Leaders – Explorers try everything and change direction constantly, which frustrates teams. Leaders go in a straight line to a clear destination, unwavering in mission even if the path changes. I loved changing my mind, which made me a bad leader until I learned the difference. Set projects with clear missions, even if you're personally exploring other things. Try Everything Until the World Says Yes – I had a booking agency, a record label, a recording studio, and my own music - all failures. Then, a side project to help friends (CD Baby) took off. You can't predict what the world wants from you, so try many things and listen closely to what it's telling you. Reflection What "standard pace" are you accepting in your business or career that you could actually accelerate if you questioned it? Where have you assumed something has to take a certain amount of time just because that's how it's always been done? Are you spending time on work that's valuable to you but not to others? How could you test whether what you're creating actually solves problems people are willing to pay for? Are you acting more like an explorer or a leader right now? If you're constantly changing direction, how could you set clearer missions for your projects while keeping your personal explorations separate? In this episode of The Smart Property Investment Show, co-hosts Liam Garman and Emilie Lauer explore the latest in the Australian property market, including the fast-tracked First Home Guarantee scheme, rate cuts, price trends, and key hotspots. The duo begins by examining how government policies and economic shifts will reshape the first-home buyers' market. The First Home Guarantee scheme, launching on 1 October 2025, will enable buyers to enter the market with a 5 per cent deposit and no lender's mortgage insurance, and with an increased price cap across different markets. The co-hosts caution that while the scheme makes entering the property market easier, buyers face 95 per cent mortgages amid rising prices, heightened competition, and potential negative equity. Additionally, capital cities have been recovering more strongly after interest rate cuts, while regions that have grown rapidly in recent years may stabilise. Victoria is expected to lead national price growth, with areas like Frankston, Greater Geelong, and Yarra attracting renewed interest from buyers and investors. With opportunities and risks intensifying, the co-hosts urge investors to ensure careful planning, financial literacy, and professional guidance to navigate the evolving market. In this episode, you'll discover:Why waiting for certainty keeps you broke - and what to do insteadThe magic of giving before getting - how generosity becomes your competitive advantageHow to delete your inner "what if" voice - and start trusting life's intelligenceWhat happens when you stop asking for permission and start creating your own opportunities?Last week, I was talking to a friend who's been "getting ready" to launch her business for three years. She has the perfect website mockups, a detailed business plan, and a spreadsheet that would make a NASA engineer weep with joy. Meanwhile, she's still working a job she hates, waiting for the right moment that apparently requires a solar eclipse and her horoscope to say "today's the day."It got me thinking about the stories we tell ourselves about readiness, about safety, about doing things the "right" way. Most of us have been conditioned to believe that preparation equals protection. That if we just plan enough, research enough, save enough, we can somehow guarantee our success before we even start. Spoiler alert: that guarantee doesn't exist. But what if that's backwards? What if the very act of waiting for certainty is what keeps us stuck in patterns that don't serve us?Sometimes the biggest shift isn't about changing what you do—it's about changing who you surround yourself with.Today our guest is Mark Yuzuik, a transformational speaker and master hypnotist who has motivated and entertained hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world for more than 25 years. He's living proof that when you stop waiting for permission, life starts saying yes in ways you never expected.Links from the episode:Show Notes: mindlove.com/413Join the Mind Love CollectiveSign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes to wake up inspiredSupport Mind Love SponsorsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Market volatility is inevitable—but it doesn't have to be a setback. In this episode, retirement planners Loren Merkle and Clint Huntrods join host Molly Nelson to help you rethink volatility as an opportunity. They explain how two proactive strategies, dollar-cost averaging and Roth conversions, can turn down markets into powerful moments for long-term retirement growth.Clint breaks down dollar-cost averaging with a five-month example, showing how a consistent $1,000 monthly investment during a volatile market could result in purchasing more shares at lower prices—lowering the average cost per share to $37.45 compared to a $50 lump sum investment. It's a clear demonstration of how strategy can outperform timing when it comes to building long-term value in your retirement portfolio. The episode also covers what a recession-resistant retirement plan really looks like and how it can offer you stability, confidence, and control. --Ready to take the next step? Erik Wetterling, Founder and Editor of The Hedgeless Horseman website, joins us to discuss the opportunities he is seeing for portfolio rebalancing or “value shuffling,” due to the extreme market volatility and pricing dislocations in many resource equities. This volatility is caused from across-the-board sympathetic selling in most market sectors on back of reactions to the Trump tariff policies. --> Key themes covered in this interview: Precious Metals prices are still at very high levels, and yet many gold and silver equities have had disproportionate selloffs in sympathy with US general equity markets. Comparisons to this recent rapid correction in the gold stocks, versus other strong corrections; like what we saw during the pandemic crash or bear-market market lows of late 2015 into early 2016. Erik notes the much different backdrop in the fundamental value of the producers and developers based on current gold price in contrast to those other market crashes. What are the actual effects of tariffs on US domestic resource companies, versus companies operating internationally; as it relates to cost inputs like oil, labor, chemicals, steel, and capex to build new mines. Why volatility is the bread and better of value investors. Erik mentions that volatility creates the opportunities for value shuffling in one's portfolio and is the “poor man's dry powder.” What are the type of precious metals stocks that Erik is most interested in rotating into, considering the current backdrop of blanket selling across the whole sector. Tariffs are nothing new. They've been implemented at several points in U.S. history, including as recently as 2018. But there are a confluence of factors surrounding President Trump's current round of tariffs that make it worth discussing. On today's show, we round up questions we've been receiving at Keen Wealth about tariffs to provide a comprehensive rundown of why Wall Street is interested and what you should discuss with your financial advisor.

What does success look like beyond the traditional indicators of achievement? In this episode, Kevin interviews Adrian Kelly to discuss the complexities of success, the common misconceptions about it, and how leaders can redefine success for themselves and their teams. Julie Dockrell talks to us about how oral language is the foundation for all other learning and what the implications of this are for teachers.Julie talks about how her research aims to help children develop a flexible use of language across different contexts, for instance through a programme that supports children's conversational skills. She explores the importance of developing children's inference skills and oral comprehension by encouraging children to talk about and understand the texts they're reading.Julie also discusses the different types of multilingual classrooms and how teachers can address the challenges of teaching when there are many different languages in a classroom – though she also emphasises the importance of acknowledging the diversity of languages and translanguaging in particular.Full show notes, links and transcript: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/news/2025/feb/if-we-dont-create-opportunities-talk-we-build-disadvantage-staffroom-s05e02
In this episode of Unleashed, Leah pulls back the curtain on the truth about opportunity—no one is coming to invite you. Women have been conditioned to wait, to shrink, to make sure everyone else is taken care of before daring to put themselves first. But the world isn't changed by those who wait. Leah shares the bold moves that shaped her own journey—starting a company, hiring a team, and buying another business—all before feeling “ready.” She dives into why women are expected to be palatable, why ambition is only acceptable when it's convenient, and why it's time to rewrite the rules. This episode is your wake-up call: stop waiting for permission and start taking up space. Because the future belongs to those who bet on themselves. With podcast microphone Love what you're hearing? No Contact: Now What? When going through a breakup, many people understand the importance of giving space, or as I call it, going "no contact." However, once you're in no contact, the question becomes, now what? In this article, I'll help guide you through the next steps, whether or not your ex decides to reach out. Get Coach Lee's Emergency Breakup Kit at https://MyExBackCoach.com/emergency-breakup-kit 1. When Your Ex Reaches Out The biggest question I hear is, What should I do if my ex contacts me? This is a pivotal moment, as it usually indicates they're feeling unsure about the breakup. They may be open to reconnecting but are likely still on the fence. Here's how to handle it: Stay Calm and Avoid Pressure: When your ex reaches out, do your best to remain calm. Avoid pressuring them, both emotionally and in conversation. It's normal to feel excited, but expressing too much eagerness could overwhelm them or make them feel obligated. Instead, keep things light and casual. Avoid Emotional Conversations: Try to steer clear of heavy discussions about the breakup, especially in the first interaction. They know you're not together, and reminding them of it can trigger feelings of guilt or discomfort. If they ask how you're doing, keep your response light. “I've been alright, and things are getting better,” is often enough. Changing the subject after this brief response can keep the interaction positive. Prepare a List of Neutral Topics: It's a good idea to pre-plan some questions or topics to discuss that don't involve the breakup. Having a few in mind will help you keep the conversation smooth and reduce the risk of an emotional slip-up. 2. Create Opportunities for Face-to-Face Interaction Once you've reestablished contact, aim for a face-to-face meeting if it feels natural. The goal is not to pressure them into this, but to look for subtle cues that suggest they might be open to meeting. Here's how to go about it: Gauge Their Openness: If your ex hints at a get-together or seems receptive, you can test the waters with a light suggestion like, “Maybe we can grab coffee sometime to catch up.” If they're interested, they'll respond positively. If they hesitate, back off and give them space. Keep it Short and Leave Them Wanting More: When you do meet, make sure to end things on a high note. Keep the meeting to around 45 minutes to an hour. Leave while the interaction is still enjoyable, so they walk away wishing it had lasted longer. This helps create a positive memory of the interaction, encouraging them to reach out again. 3. What to Do if Your Ex Does Not Reach Out If weeks or even months pass and your ex doesn't reach out, you'll need to make a decision. Many people find this silence difficult, but it can also serve as a valuable indicator of your ex's level of interest. Consider Their Level of Investment: Ask yourself: Is this person showing the qualities of a committed partner? If someone truly cares, they will likely reach out within a reasonable period of time. If they don't, consider what that says about their willingness to invest in a relationship with you. Decide Whether to Reach Out for Closure: Some people feel they need to reach out for closure. If that's the case, keep your message simple, such as, “I hope you're doing well.” A statement like this doesn't apply any pressure for them to respond. If they reply, you can take the conversation further. If they don't, you have a clear answer and may find it easier to move on. Weighing Your Options: Long periods of no contact can be revealing. If you're nearing several months or even a year without hearing from them, it's important to consider whether they're truly the right person for you. Relationships should involve mutual investment, and if they're comfortable without any contact, you might be better off moving forward. 4. Building the Face-to-Face Connection In some cases, getting to a face-to-face meeting after your ex has reestablished contact can be a powerful step toward reconciliation. If you find yourself in this situation, treat the interaction as if it were a first date. Focus on Positive, Shared Memories: Talk about lighthearted memories or inside jokes. Remind them, subtly, of the good times. Don't bring up relationship issues or anything too intense. Instead, focus on rekindling the positive aspects that made your relationship enjoyable. End on a High Note: When the meeting is going well, cut it short before it reaches a natural end. You might say, “I have an appointment, so I need to head out, but this was great.” If they walk away wishing the meeting had lasted longer, they're more likely to want to see you again. 5. When It's Time to Move On Not every relationship will come back together, and sometimes, no contact can help clarify whether this person is truly right for you. If they're unwilling to reconnect after a long period of time, or if they don't show signs of commitment, it may be time to consider moving on. Focus on Yourself: If it becomes clear they're not reaching out or open to reconciliation, shift your focus to yourself and your own growth. Finding someone who values commitment and understands the normal ebb and flow of relationships can bring you more stability and happiness in the long run. The Power of No Contact for You, Too: No contact isn't just a tool to bring your ex back. It's also a chance for you to assess whether they're a suitable partner. If they truly care, they'll reach out. If they don't, you've saved yourself further heartache and opened the door for a healthier, more committed relationship down the road. In the end, whether or not your ex reaches out, no contact can be a powerful experience that helps you gain clarity and emotional resilience. By following these principles, you're giving yourself the best chance for healing and, if it's meant to be, reconciliation. Remember that a lasting relationship involves more than initial passion—it requires a willingness to work through the ups and downs together. In this episode, we explore capacity building, what it means, the mindset needed, and how to effectively build team capacity.Capacity building empowers individuals and groups with the skills to tackle complex tasks and work toward a shared vision. However, it's essential not to fall into the trap of thinking only the leader or a facilitator can drive this growth. While facilitators can help, true and lasting capacity is built when the entire group contributes to creating their desired future together.Attitudes Needed to Build Team Capacity:Communication dynamics that encourage and supportWillingness to listen, ask questions, check understanding, and contribute without judgmentDesire to serve, empathy, and patienceWillingness to address challenges and support others in addressing themExample 1: Help Each Other OutI recently worked on a project with a study circle that included a business owner facing challenges after opening a store. She had to manage more staff, deal with absences, train employees, and balance family life, as her husband worked night shifts. Although the study circle provided important support, she worried about neglecting her children. We discussed her desired outcomes and obstacles, and together we found a potential solution: hiring a nearby teenager seeking work experience to watch her kids during the study circle. This could foster a positive relationship between the teen and the children, providing mutual support. However, the solution depends on various factors, like the teen and parents agreeing and ensuring good chemistry. With mutual care, the group can build a supportive, capacity-building environment.Example 2: Work Without Play Makes Jack a Dull BoyWhen working toward a goal, especially in project management, teams can feel drained by the details and setbacks, leading to exhaustion and a lack of motivation. If a team appears apathetic or fatigued, what they need is fun, food, and informal interaction. Seriousness and fatigue can be relieved through team-building exercises, but simply gathering for food and laughter can greatly improve morale. A team not functioning well is often one where no one is smiling or laughing. Humor is a key indicator of a healthy, capacity-building team. So, if humor and joy are missing, it's essential to help bring them back to foster a supportive and effective environment.Example 3: Create Opportunities to Open UpManagers understand the importance of 1-on-1 conversations but often struggle with implementation because they approach them as problem-solving sessions rather than opportunities to connect. These meetings should focus on appreciating the individual and discussing their personal and professional experiences through simple questions about challenges and successes. The goal is to build trust and relationships, not to give feedback or solve issues. For larger teams, managers should meet with supervisors, while smaller teams benefit from more frequent 1-on-1s. Regularly scheduled meetings every few months foster a supportive environment, preventing problems and enhancing team dynamics.Example 4: Be Interested, Not InterestingBeing genuinely interested helps the team move toward a desired goal. When you become absorbed in your interest in the team's progress, you naturally rise in their eyes as someone with capacity, credibility, and respect. The more you try to insist on your greatness, the less impactful you appear. The more you help resource the team, the more your esteem in their eyes grows.Support the show

In this episode of "Father Joe," hosts Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks dive deep into the concept of creating opportunities for goodness and how to follow God in our everyday lives. Reflecting on their previous discussions about Mary and the fourth commandment, they explore the profound idea of making intentional choices that lead us closer to God and enable us to do good in the world.Joe begins by addressing a common question: how can we create opportunities for others to choose goodness and follow God? He emphasizes the importance of making these opportunities explicit and actionable, even though we are not divine beings with the power of the archangel Gabriel. Joe points out, “I think there's a lot more people that will respond to, yes, I will, but they don't want to figure out how to create the opportunity. And the more I believe the opportunities being created are the catalyst to the effect.”Father Boniface responds by highlighting the importance of being in a prayerful state and open to listening, just as Mary was when she received the Annunciation. He explains, “His personal invitation to do good, to grow in holiness, to love beyond what might be sort of necessary from justice, that's a whispered voice, because otherwise he would overwhelm our freedom.” This gentle call from God requires us to be attentive and proactive in seeking out and responding to these opportunities. The conversation then shifts to modern distractions, particularly the pervasive influence of smartphones. Joe and Father Boniface discuss how these devices can lead to "motionlessness," where people are constantly distracted and unable to fully engage with the present moment or the people around them. Joe notes, “Most of us do not carry a television around with us 24/7 but there are many people out there that if they don't know where their phone is, it's a crisis.”Father Boniface adds, “Having a good cell phone hygiene is one way to be present to life. And I think in general, there's a...well, why is distraction also so attractive? I think we have a lot that we want to escape from.” He emphasizes the need for intentional actions and sacrifices to overcome these distractions and fully commit to our relationships and responsibilities. The hosts also touch on the broader societal issues of diminishing attention spans and the need for intentional living. Joe highlights the importance of questioning societal norms and finding ways to disconnect from distractions, stating, “We're a social species, we need to be a part of the group, but we also need to do what's right and question what's going on with the group.”In conclusion, Father Boniface offers a simple yet powerful call to action: “Give your attention to someone. That's an act of love. And love lasts forever. And the more that we sow the seeds of love, giving attention, making sacrifices, putting others first, just simple acts of service can make a tremendous difference.”Join us in this enlightening discussion and discover practical ways to create more opportunities for goodness in your life.
