Chapter 19 - The Mirror of Galadriel‘Alas!' said Aragorn. ‘Gandalf the Grey fell into shadow. He remained in Moria and did not escape.' At these words all the Elves in the hall cried aloud in grief and amazement. Q1 - What do you think of Lothlorian‘I am afraid that's only too true, Sam,' said Frodo. ‘Yet I hope very much that before we leave we shall see the Lady of the Elves again.' Even as he spoke, they saw, as if she came in answer to their words, the Lady Galadriel approaching. Tall and white and fair she walked beneath the trees. She spoke no word, but beckoned to them.Q2 - What do you think of the Mirror?Q3 - What do you think about Sam looking into the mirror?‘He suspects, but he does not know – not yet. Do you not see now wherefore your coming is to us as the footstep of Doom? For if you fail, then we are laid bare to the Enemy. Yet if you succeed, then our power is diminished, and Lothlo´rien will fade, and the tides of Time will sweep it away. We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.'Q4 - What do you make of this?‘And now at last it comes. You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!' She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she wore there issued a great light that illumined her alone and left all else dark. She stood before Frodo seeming now tall beyond measurement, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful. Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! she was shrunken: a slender elf-woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad. ‘I pass the test,' she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.'Q5 - What was her test?Chapter 20 - Farewell to LorienAnd Aragorn answered: ‘Lady, you know all my desire, and long held in keeping the only treasure that I seek. Yet it is not yours to give me, even if you would; and only through darkness shall I come to it.' ‘Yet maybe this will lighten your heart,' said Galadriel; ‘for it was left in my care to be given to you, should you pass through this land.' Then she lifted from her lap a great stone of a clear green, set in a silver brooch that was wrought in the likeness of an eagle with outspread wings; and as she held it up the gem flashed like the sun shining through the leaves of spring. ‘This stone I gave to Celebrı´an my daughter, and she to hers; and now it comes to you as a token of hope. In this hour take the name that was foretold for you, Elessar, the Elfstone of the House of Elendil!' Then Aragorn took the stone and pinned the brooch upon his breast, and those who saw him wondered; for they had not marked before how tall and kingly he stood, and it seemed to them that many years of toil had fallen from his shoulders. ‘For the gifts that you have given me I thank you,' he said, ‘O Lady of Lo´rien of whom were sprung Celebrı´an and Arwen Evenstar. What praise could I say more?'Q1 - What do you think of Aragorn?‘And what gift would a Dwarf ask of the Elves?' said Galadriel, turning to Gimli. ‘None, Lady,' answered Gimli. ‘It is enough for me to have seen the Lady of the Galadhrim, and to have heard her gentle words.' ‘Hear all ye Elves!' she cried to those about her. ‘Let none say again that Dwarves are grasping and ungracious! Yet surely, Gimli son of Glo´in, you desire something that I could give? Name it, I bid you! You shall not be the only guest without a gift.' ‘There is nothing, Lady Galadriel,' said Gimli, bowing low and stammering. ‘Nothing, unless it might be – unless it is permitted to ask, nay, to name a single strand of your hair, which surpasses the gold of the earth as the stars surpass the gems of the mine. I do not ask for such a gift. But you commanded me to name my desire.'Q2 - This is amazingQ3 - What do you think of their gifts?Chapter 21 - The Great River‘Elbereth Gilthoniel!' sighed Legolas as he looked up. Even as he did so, a dark shape, like a cloud and yet not a cloud, for it moved far more swiftly, came out of the blackness in the South, and sped towards the Company, blotting out all light as it approached. Soon it appeared as a great winged creature, blacker than the pits in the night. Fierce voices rose up to greet it from across the water. Frodo felt a sudden chill running through him and clutching at his heart; there was a deadly cold, like the memory of an old wound, in his shoulder. He crouched down, as if to hide. Suddenly the great bow of Lo´rien sang. Shrill went the arrow from the elven-string. Frodo looked up. Almost above him the winged shape swerved. There was a harsh croaking scream, as it fell out of the air, vanishing down into the gloom of the eastern shore. The sky was clean again. There was a tumult of many voices far away, cursing and wailing in the darkness, and then silence. Neither shaft nor cry came again from the east that night.Q1 - What was that?Boromir held out long against this choice; but when it became plain that Frodo would follow Aragorn, wherever he went, he gave in. ‘It is not the way of the Men of Minas Tirith to desert their friends at need,' he said, ‘and you will need my strength, if ever you are to reach the Tindrock. To the tall isle I will go, but no further. There I shall turn to my home, alone if my help has not earned the reward of any companionship.'Q2 - What do you think of Boromir?‘Fear not!' said a strange voice behind him. Frodo turned and saw Strider, and yet not Strider; for the weatherworn Ranger was no longer there. In the stern sat Aragorn son of Arathorn, proud and erect, guiding the boat with skilful strokes; his hood was cast back, and his dark hair was blowing in the wind, a light was in his eyes: a king returning from exile to his own land.Q3 - What do you think of their trip so far?Chapter 22 - The Breaking of the Fellowship‘I was afraid for you, Frodo,' he said, coming forward. ‘If Aragorn is right and Orcs are near, then none of us should wander alone, and you least of all: so much depends on you. And my heart too is heavy. May I stay now and talk for a while, since I have found you? It would comfort me. Where there are so many, all speech becomes a debate without end. But two together may perhaps find wisdom.'Q1 - What do you think of this conversation?‘Ah! The Ring!' said Boromir, his eyes lighting. ‘The Ring! Is it not a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt for so small a thing? So small a thing! And I have seen it only for an instant in the house of Elrond. Could I not have a sight of it again?'Q2 - Thoughts on Boromirs temptation?Q3 - How do you think this compares with Frodo offering the ring to Galadriel? The two powers strove in him. For a moment, perfectly balanced between their piercing points, he writhed, tormented. Suddenly he was aware of himself again, Frodo, neither the Voice nor the Eye: free to choose, and with one remaining instant in which to do so. He took the Ring off his finger. He was kneeling in clear sunlight before the high seat. A black shadow seemed to pass like an arm above him; it missed Amon Hen and groped out west, and faded. Then all the sky was clean and blue and birds sang in every tree.Q4 - What would have happened to Frodo if the Ring took control?Sam passed his hand over his eyes, brushing away the tears. ‘Steady, Gamgee!' he said. ‘Think, if you can! He can't fly across rivers, and he can't jump waterfalls. He's got no gear. So he's got to get back to the boats. Back to the boats! Back to the boats, Sam, like lightning!'Q5 - Sam is brilliant!‘Of course it is,' answered Sam. ‘But not alone. I'm coming too, or neither of us isn't going. I'll knock holes in all the boats first.' Frodo actually laughed. A sudden warmth and gladness touched his heart. ‘Leave one!' he said. ‘We'll need it. But you can't come like this without your gear or food or anything.'Q6 - What do you think?

We start the journey of reviewing one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time with Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring. We have a special correspondent call in from Hobbiton itself, Strangles joins us for Good, Bad, Ugly to discuss the blockbuster with us."The Fellowship of the Ring" is an absolute triumph in the world of cinema, delivering a spellbinding and faithful adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's literary masterpiece. Directed by Peter Jackson and released in 2001, this film takes viewers on an epic journey into the heart of Middle-earth, where adventure, friendship, and the battle between good and evil come to life in breathtaking fashion. One of the film's greatest achievements is its unwavering commitment to capturing the essence of Tolkien's world. From the lush landscapes of the Shire to the ominous darkness of Mordor, every location feels authentic and meticulously detailed. The craftsmanship that went into designing the costumes, sets, and props is nothing short of astounding. It's impossible not to be fully immersed in Middle-earth's rich tapestry. The ensemble cast is nothing short of extraordinary. Sir Ian McKellen's portrayal of Gandalf is a masterclass in acting, and Elijah Wood's Frodo Baggins is a character that elicits both sympathy and admiration. The entire Fellowship, including Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), and the rest, is impeccably cast, each member bringing their unique strengths to the group dynamic.Howard Shore's musical score is a character in itself, enriching every scene with emotion and grandeur. The hauntingly beautiful "Concerning Hobbits" theme contrasts perfectly with the epic and ominous undertones of the Mordor theme. It's a testament to how music can elevate a film to legendary status. The film's pacing is impeccable, balancing exposition with thrilling action sequences seamlessly. The decision to split Tolkien's dense narrative into three films was a wise one, allowing for depth and character development without sacrificing momentum."The Fellowship of the Ring" excels in its portrayal of the timeless themes of heroism, friendship, and the corrupting influence of power. It delves into the moral dilemmas faced by its characters, making them all the more relatable and human in a fantastical setting.Visually, this film was groundbreaking for its time, with groundbreaking CGI that still holds up today. The battles, particularly the skirmish at Amon Hen and the terrifying confrontation with the Balrog, are awe-inspiring spectacles that set new standards for epic fantasy filmmaking. In conclusion, "The Fellowship of the Ring" is a masterpiece that stands the test of time. It's a testament to the power of storytelling and filmmaking when executed with passion, dedication, and an unwavering respect for the source material. Whether you're a fan of fantasy or simply appreciate exceptional cinema, this film is a must-see, and it will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on your cinematic journey. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party! The Great River - Led by Aragorn, who sets a brisk pace, the Fellowship paddles down the Anduin River. As the days go by, an uneasy feeling grows in them, and a few worrying developments occur: Boromir begins muttering to himself and behaving strangely, and Sam sees a log with eyes that "floats" behind them. When Sam tells Frodo about the strange sight, the two agree it is likely Gollum. Later, they find out Aragorn has been aware Gollum has been following them since Moria. As they near the rapids of Sarn Gebir, they are attacked by Orcs firing arrows at them, and they see a black winged figure pass overhead. Legolas fires an arrow at it, and it screams as it falls from the sky. Aragorn decides they will head for Amon Hen, where the kings of old built a "high seat." He hopes his choice will be made clearer there. They pass through Argonath, the Pillars of the Kings, giant statues carved into pillars set on either side of the river, representing Isildur and Anárion. They finally set foot on dry ground and must finally choose which way to go next.

The Breaking of the Fellowship - Aragorn calls the Company together and tells them they must now make a choice. He tells Frodo the choice of which way the Ring goes rests with him, as Ring-bearer. Frodo asks for time to consider what to do, and Aragorn agrees to give him an hour to think. Frodo walks off to ponder his options. As he does so, Boromir approaches him and asks him to come to Minas Tirith. Then, he asks to see the Ring. When Frodo refuses, he becomes agitated and asks Frodo to lend him the Ring to vanquish the power of Mordor. When Frodo again refuses, Boromir tries to take it by force, but Frodo slips on the Ring and disappears. Running to the top of Amon Hen still wearing the Ring, Frodo can see signs of war in every direction. Suddenly, he is aware of the Eye of Sauron searching for him. He quickly pulls the Ring off, and, realizing the Ring has begun to corrupt the Company, decides to go on toward Mordor alone. Meanwhile, Aragorn, Merry, Pippin, and Sam discuss the situation and debate what Frodo is likely to do. Sam believes Frodo will decide to go off alone, and when Boromir reveals he had harsh words with Frodo, Sam realizes Frodo may already be leaving. He runs to where the boats are just in time to see Frodo taking one and leaving. Sam chases after him and the two hobbits leave the Fellowship and make for Mordor.

Notes for this episode     Aragorn on the seat of Amon Hen   The world seems darkened, and there was nothing to see THE HORN OF GONDOR! Aragorn came too late and missed the fight Boromir is dying Sword: broken above the hilt Horn: cloven in two Pierced by many arrows The Hobbits are taken! Aragorn doesn’t know what to do 1 Find the Ring and the Bearer 2 Go to Minas Tirith as bidden by his heart and Boromir’s dying wish 3 Find the Halflings Everything he has done today is turned to ruin Gimli and Legolas slaying in the woods, also too late to help The Hobbits were bound, therefore likely still alive Finding the Hobbit knives Work of Westernesse Symbols of the enemy Strange looking orcs White Hand White ‘S’ Not Sauron - Red Eye Saruman - Evil is afoot, and the west is no longer safe Tending the fallen. Cannot bury him Give him to Anduin - the River of Gondor Carry him back to the river - hard to do with Boromir being so large and strong Lay him in the boat, and made him presentable. Towed the boat into the water Let him go, and he disappeared over Rauros “Rauros roared on unchanging” Boromir was not seen again in Minas Tirith It was said that he road his boat down the river all the way to the sea. The song of sorrow - The “people” hearken to the winds for news of Boromir (West, South, and North) Only two boats a mystery No orcs 2 packs gone also - Sam’s for sure Aragorn puts the story together by Sam’s words and apparent actions Frodo and Sam have taken the boat across the river What to do? Take the last boat after Frodo Or follow the orcs The direct path to Minas Tirith is apparently no longer an option Aragorn’s personal mission is abandoned for the moment Aragorn finally knows what he must do - The company has played its part He must chase after the other hobbits or they will be left to torment and death. “My heart speaks clearly at last. The fate of the Bearer is in my hands no longer” “Yet we that remain cannot forsake our companions while we have strength left.” “We will press on by day and dark… with hope or without hope we will follow the trail of our enemies, and woe to them if we prove the swifter. We will make such a chase that will be accounted a marvel among the three kindreds: elves, dwarves, and men. Forth the three hunters!” His mind was, at last, made up and the hunt begins! [Digital Gonzo 2012] The Lord of the Rings begins in earnest. Starting with an epic retelling of Middle-earth history we set out to balance the attention to detail of major fandom with critical analysis, discussions on character development and notable aspects of the production. Setting out from the Shire, this episode will take you all the way to Rivendell meeting Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Saruman, Strider, Elrond and Arwen along the way. The operatic scoring of Howard Shaw remains an emotional touchstone throughout.  Then the Ring goes south, over and under the Misty Mountains culminating at Amon Hen where the Fellowship is broken from within. Character discussions include Boromir and Galadriel and the epic confrontation with shadow and flame.  Guest Chris Eason of GameBurst
