Star Trek IV – The Voyage Home, Teil 17: 400 Tonnen Wal, ein beleidigter Spock & klingonischer Gegenwind! Kirk will nur schnell zurück ins 23.

The Trek Files welcomes back visual effects veteran Stuart Ziff for a firsthand trip into the making of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This time, the documents are original production call sheets from April 1986, detailing the now-legendary "B-Tank" shoot where the Klingon Bird-of-Prey splashed down into San Francisco Bay with George and Gracie the humpback whales. Stu recalls the practical filmmaking wizardry behind the scenes: giant wave machines, lightning rigs, whale effects, and an enormous outdoor water tank built on the Paramount lot. Along the way, he shares stories about building a mechanical whale eye (for the wrong side of the whale), experimenting with blue dye for the tank water, and watching old Hollywood effects crews create movie magic in real time. Larry and Stu also circle back to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Stu's experiences during the turbulent Robert Abel & Associates era, including a revealing memory involving a young Paramount executive named Jeffrey Katzenberg. It's a fond look back at the kind of filmmaking that required wind machines, carbon-arc lightning effects, scuba divers, towels, and "wetsuits for cast and crew." Plus: Stu discusses the new documentary being produced about his life and career, and how fans can help support it. (!) „Timmy“ ist Thema 2, das Schicksal des Buckelwals. Was lernen wir daraus? Dass wir noch Empathie haben. Gott sei Dank! #StarTrek #StarTrekIV #TheVoyageHome #DiscoveryPanel #Kirk #Spock #Scotty #GillianTaylor #Chekov #Sulu #Uhura #ILM #DonPeterman #Beamen #Transporter #Buckelwale #MissionDistrict #SanFrancisco #StarTrekPodcast

On Episode 148 of The Film ‘89 Podcast, we're back talking Star Trek as we continue our coverage of the original crew's big screen adventures. Having already covered the first three films for each of their 40th anniversaries, it's now the turn of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, which brought an end to the “Genesis Trilogy” consisting of the second, third and fourth Trek films, where the story in each film follows directly into the next. Following the death and destruction of The Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, returning director and star, Leonard Nimoy, wanted a lighter tone as well as a strong ecological message, that of whale preservation, and both of these aspects, coupled with our crew playing fish out of water in a San Francisco 300 years in their past, helped the film become the most financially successful Star Trek film of them all and a firm favourite among fans. So join Skye and returning co-hosts John Arminio, Bill Scurry and Adam Rackoff in a celebration of the 40th anniversary of one of the very best Star Trek adventures.

On this third installment of Febwhaleary we take a look at perhaps the largest acrobats in the sea: the humpback whale. Known for their extraordinary feats of agility, as well as a complex series of songs that they sing to one another, the humpbacks were truly one of the most graceful creatures ever to inhabit the oceans. Unfortunately, the humpbacks would be hunted to extinction in the early 21st century…or so we thought. To understand the fate of the humpbacks, one must look not into the future…but into the past. The year 1986; using a stolen Klingon bird of prey, a group of disgraced Starfleet officers from the 23rd century would travel backwards through time to save, not only the humpbacks, but indeed all of humanity from extinction. The following is a dramatization of those events that we like to call Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we lay down a series of colorful metaphors are fellow cinephiles and life long members of the Cetacean Institute in Sausalito, Mike, Ryan, and Jackie.Topics of discussion in this episode include the Enterprise crew's laissez faire attitude towards time travel; we analyze where the alien space probe falls on the Bristol Stool Scale; and finally, we break down the age old fallacy of the odd numbered Trek's being shit.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, Follow Us on Instagram, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.comAnd with the whales safely transported to the 23rd century, this leg of our voyage is now over. When Febwhaleary concludes, we'll be taking a look at one of the rarest whale species on the planet…the Comeback Whale, as we watch Darren Aronofsky's 2022 Oscar Winner, The Whale.

Drawing from a pair of early Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home script drafts, we explore a scene that implies Saavik is pregnant with Spock's child, a narrative thread begun in Star Trek III but quietly dropped by the time the final film was released. Robin shares warm memories of working with Leonard Nimoy, the late Harve Bennett, and her fellow castmates, as well as a few eye-opening truths about the unpredictability of Hollywood. Plus, she discusses her return to the role of Saavik in OTOY's Unification, and we recreate the pivotal, never-filmed scene between Kirk and Saavik. It's an emotional, candid, and deeply human conversation about legacy, missed opportunities, and what it means to carry a character with you for decades. Documents and additional references: First Draft (August 23, 1985): Conversation between Kirk and Saavik revealing her pregnancy by Spock. Second Draft (November 18, 1985): Subtle reference via McCoy's line: "I'm a surgeon, not a pediatrician." Mark Mangini is a six-time Oscar-nominated, two-time Oscar-winning Sound Designer. He won his Oscars for Dune and Mad Max Fury Road. Mark's also well known for designing sound for numerous films, including: Blade Runner 2049, Star Treks I, IV and V, Beauty and the Beast, TheFifthElement, Space Jam, Poltergeist,Gremlins, Aladdin, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, among many more.Mark has spent his 49-year career in Hollywood imagining and composing altered sonic realities for motion pictures. He's a frequent lecturer, an outspoken proponent for sound as art, and a guitarist/songwriter with compositions that can be heard in sex, lies and videotape, Star Trek IV, and more.Mark believes that all organized sound is music. He sees his work in movies as every bit a composition as those of Beethoven and the Beatles. He just happens to use dissonance, melodic content and arrhythmia to its fullest advantage. His work is no less considered, designed, created or manipulated. It just isn't usually what we think of as hummable. His first job in the entertainment industry was at the age of 19 in the sound department of Hanna Barbera Studios making funny noises for children's cartoons. His ears have been keenly trained by years of language study and playing guitar, which suited him well for a career of critical listening and creating unimagined aural worlds and fabricating sonic realities for motion pictures.Mark founded and ran the successful post-production sound company, Weddington Productions, for 25 years. Today he works at Formosa Group in Hollywood, continuing his work as a Supervising Sound Editor, Sound Designer and Re-recording mixer.

End Song: "Squandered" by Salvage 00:00:00 – Cold Open, Social Media “Raw Sewage,” and the Kimmel Setup The guys kick off with snack banter and a barking “producer dog,” then vent about the internet's sewage firehose and culture-war escalation—teasing the night's first big story: ABC suspending Jimmy Kimmel after his Charlie Kirk bit. 00:10:00 – Kimmel vs. Disney: The Contract Chess Match They read coverage framing Bob Iger and Disney caught between D.C. pressure and Hollywood outrage, play Kimmel's clip about Kirk, and argue Disney may just be hunting a morals-clause exit more than defending speech. 00:20:00 – “Free Speech” or Just Business? A sharper take on free-speech claims: the FCC can't outlaw Kimmel; platforms and affiliates can still walk. They contrast today's outrage with past deplatformings (e.g., Alex Jones) and point out the inconsistency of everyone's “principles.” 00:30:00 – The Australia Mix-Up & Ratings Reality They laugh over hundreds of Kimmel complaints misdirected to Australia's ABC, then note ratings and affiliate ad pressure may matter more than politics. Protest optics aside, reruns could probably match his numbers. 00:40:00 – Burchett, SKIFs, and “Deep-Water Entities” Pivot to UFOs/USOs: Rep. Tim Burchett's chatter about craft emerging from deep water; SKIF whispers around David Grusch; frustration that hearings recycle stories without subpoenaing the real gatekeepers. 00:50:00 – Invisible Residents: Classic USO Cases A tour through Ivan T. Sanderson's 1970 book: cigar-shaped blue-white craft pacing a ship, diving beneath the hull, and WWII-era objects surfacing then shooting skyward—suggesting surveillance patrols and ocean “bases.” 01:00:00 – Viral “Meteor Slime” Debunk That TikTok “living meteorite” from Panama? Great practical effects, not aliens. They cite polymer/hexane demo videos showing the exact wriggle behavior; fun Halloween content, just not real. 01:10:00 – The Hat Man: Sleep Paralysis or Shadow Entity? Deep dive into the Hat Man meme: neuroscientists say it's culture-shaped sleep paralysis; the show entertains that plus the paranormal angle (shadow people, MIB parallels). Listeners share eerily similar accounts. 01:20:00 – Call-Ins: Ouija, Weird Sleep, Witching Hour Callers recount Ouija board weirdness and a rash of 1–3 a.m. wake-ups. The crew swaps remedies and wonders—half-joking—if celestial strangeness is messing with everyone's sleep. 01:30:00 – Jezebel's “We Hired Witches” Piece Gets Pulled They review the Jezebel article boasting an Etsy curse on Charlie Kirk (later edited/removed post-assassination), debate ethics of “satire” about hexes, and note a new doc where a guy seeks to be cursed to test effects. 01:40:00 – Are Whales Trying to Talk to Us? From crop circles to “bubble circles”: humpbacks blowing rings around swimmers/boats as possible communication; shoutouts to bioacoustic playback experiments and Star Trek IV's “talk to the whales” lesson. 01:50:00 – Akron Lawn-Mower Caper & Dumb-Crime Detour Ohio man allegedly flips school-district mowers on Facebook Marketplace—embezzlement or just brazen stupidity? They roast the scheme (and marketing tactics). 02:00:00 – Flying Cars Crash, Duct-Taped Commuter & Sign-Off Chinese VTOL “flying cars” collide during an airshow rehearsal; the crew imagines an Amazon drone commuter basket and jokes about a duct-taped rider sipping a Slurpee. Closing plugs and “watch the skies…and drones.” Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research ▀▄▀▄▀ CONTACT LINKS ▀▄▀▄▀ ► Phone: 614-388-9109 ► Skype: ourbigdumbmouth ► Website: http://obdmpod.com ► Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/obdmpod ► Full Videos at Odysee: https://odysee.com/@obdm:0 ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/obdmpod ► Instagram: obdmpod ► Email: ourbigdumbmouth at gmail ► RSS: http://ourbigdumbmouth.libsyn.com/rss ► iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/our-big-dumb-mouth/id261189509?mt=2

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Today's podcast features an incredibly talented and always delightful Catherine Hicks. You might remember her as the loving Annie Camden from “7th Heaven,” the brilliant Dr. Gillian Taylor who taught Captain Kirk a thing or two about whales in “Star Trek IV” and of course, the woman who had the unfortunate luck of buying a doll possessed by a serial killer in “Child's Play.” But then, we've all made questionable shopping choices, right? But, did you also know she starred alongside Bill Murray in “Stripes?” She held her own against one of comedy's greatest. She'll comment on that experience.

There's also the matter of beaming the whales (and the water) onto their captured Klingon vessel, traveling back to the 23rd Century and hoping that the whales can talk the Probe out of destroying all life on Earth. And if they can make it through all of that, what will become of Admiral Kirk, the Enterprise crew and Dr. Gillian Taylor? Thanks for listening, keep going boldly and see you around the galaxy!

Actually, it's a new episode of “The Cine-Files with Steve Morris & John Rocha,” but since we're finally taking our deep dive into the most popular “Star Trek” film of all featuring the cast from “The Original Series,” it also doubles as an “Enterprise Incidents” episode too.In part one of our three-part series covering “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home,” the legendary crew of the late Starship Enterprise is on its way back to Earth in their captured Klingon vessel with the recently resurrected Captain Spock to face trial for acts of mutiny. But while en route, they receive a distress call warning all approaching vessels to stay away, due to a mysterious probe that's depleting power and wreaking havoc with extreme weather, which will soon destroy all life on the planet.Kirk, Spock and McCoy utilize the resources at hand to discover that the probe is trying to communicate with one species on Earth – specifically, humpback whales, which have been extinct for more than two centuries due to human hunting. Their only solution is to go back in time, retrieve two whales, bring them back to the future and hope that they engage the probe. And that's where the human adventure really begins!

Show notes provided by Joe PelusoAt Thanksgiving in 1986, Paramount Pictures released a sci-fi, comedy, pirate adventure, caper film with the little title of: "Star Trek IV:The Voyage Home". It was an immensely popular (and financiallysuccessful) departure to what had come before! Amongst Trekkers theworld over, this is still considered the best Star Trek film evermade. And your hosts, James. Josh, Jack, and Joe concur.     Without almost out of control child-like joy the guys recount, relay, and reaffirm why this film is such a classic. With unbridledenthusiasm--bordering at times on sheer lunacy--the boys relive thisunique cinematic experience. From the rag tag crew agreeing to returnto Earth to face the music, to the trip back to present day SanFrancisco, and ultimately saving mankind once again from itsshortsightedness, the boys are so invested in this film they arepractically part of the crew tagging along on this grand adventure.Had Dr. McCoy been present for this recording he would have sent themall to the sick bay for a full psychiatric evaluation.    And for you film buffs, play close attention as Josh and Jack fillin much of the back story on how this addition to the Star Trek canonreached fruition.    As the episode draws to a close it's clear the inertial dampenersare off line as the guys bounce from scene to scene, and are alsounable to reframe from firing off the many quotable lines from thefilm. At this point it's abundantly clear the hump back whales neednot fear these silly humans. But once you listen to this latestoffering of the podcast you will understand why the guys were so giddyfor sixty plus minutes. And like Spock, at the film's conclusion--Youwill feel fine.

Erik Jensen grew up in New Jersey. As a young person he loved monster movies. For a time he considered pursuing a career as a veterinarian. But when his friend Chris Walas moved out to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the movie FX business, Erik wasn't too far behind. In Hollywood Erik worked on several low budget horror movies honing his skills and making connections. It was a small community and led to working with Rob Bottin on some projects, including John Carpenter's 1982 remake "The Thing". Erik worked in both production and as an artist. Erik's work landed him a job on Dragonslayer at ILM where he would work on multiple projects for more than 20 years. HIs list of credits are amazing and include; Young Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek IV, Ghostbusters II, Star Wars: Episode 1, Space Cowboys, AI, Peter Pan, Star Wars: Episode III, and Jarhead. He also left ILM to work at Skellington on The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. He later worked at TraumaFX building realistic task trainers for both human and K9 simulators for emergency medical training. Today Erik is retired and lives with his wife being an active grandparent. It was great fun talking with Erik about his life and incredible career (which is obvious as this is a long one).
