The boys are back for part two of the Born to Watch fourth birthday celebration, and this week's feature is Quentin Tarantino's love letter to a vanished era, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Review. Set against the backdrop of 1969 Los Angeles, this is Tarantino at his most nostalgic, most personal, and possibly most indulgent, but when it looks this good and feels this immersive, who cares?Whitey, Damo and G-Man dive deep into the neon-soaked streets of old Hollywood, where television cowboys still mattered, stuntmen drank beer on rooftops, and everyone smoked enough cigarettes to shorten their lifespan by 20 years. From Rick Dalton's crumbling confidence to Cliff Booth's effortless cool, the crew break down why this film becomes richer with every rewatch. The boys discuss how the movie completely subverts expectations, especially if you walk in expecting a full Charles Manson story. Instead, Tarantino delivers something far more emotional and reflective, a fairy tale about fading relevance, friendship, loneliness and the death of an era. Whitey explains how his first viewing left him confused, but his second cinema trip completely changed the way he saw the film, shifting focus away from the Manson backdrop and onto Rick Dalton's fear that Hollywood has passed him by.There's plenty of love for Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Rick Dalton, with Damo calling it one of the actor's best ever performances. The boys unpack how brilliantly DiCaprio balances insecurity, desperation, and ego, especially in scenes where Rick spirals after forgetting his lines or fearing he's become yesterday's news. Brad Pitt's Oscar-winning turn as Cliff Booth also gets the praise it deserves, with the crew debating whether Cliff might actually be one of Tarantino's coolest characters ever.Naturally, the conversation turns toward the ridiculous depth of the cast. From Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate to Al Pacino, Timothy Olyphant, Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, Luke Perry, Damian Lewis, Bruce Dern and Australian actor Damon Herriman as Charles Manson, this movie is stacked from top to bottom. The boys even debate whether this is Tarantino's deepest cast ever assembled. And because this is Born to Watch, things quickly descend into absolute chaos. There are discussions about Playboy Mansion parties, giant murals of yourself in your garage, Strangles learning what a queef is, and whether anyone alive could realistically resist picking up Margaret Qualley and Sydney Sweeney hitchhiking on the side of the road in 1969 Hollywood. The episode also covers:Tarantino's recreation of 1969 Los AngelesThe unbelievable soundtrack and radio advertisementsWhy the movie feels like it was made in the late '60sThe brilliance of the Spahn Ranch sequenceThe film's Oscar success and controversial lossesWhy the ending works so perfectlyBrad Pitt's effortless charismaMargot Robbie is somehow becoming even more beautiful in every sceneThe insane amount of smoking throughout the filmWhy Tarantino's "fantasy history" trilogy keeps workingThere's also another loaded Snorbs Report Special, some underrated 2019 movie recommendations, and more random nonsense than should legally fit into one podcast episode.Whether you're a lifelong Tarantino obsessive or someone who only recently discovered Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, this episode celebrates everything that makes the film unforgettable: the atmosphere, the performances, the music, the humour, and the strange, bittersweet feeling that Hollywood itself was changing forever. So if you love movie deep dives, behind-the-scenes trivia, outrageous tangents, and three Aussie blokes talking absolute rubbish while somehow stumbling into genuine film analysis, this is the episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION

NOTE: Alex mentions Matthew 6, but the passage is actually Mark 6. In our September 28 Sunday gathering we get closer to the conclusion of our series about rage. This week's discussion questions are below: When was the last time you experienced real silence? What did it feel like? Refreshing, uncomfortable, strange? The sermon compared silence to oxygen being cut off from a fire—anger burns out in quiet. How have you seen silence defuse anger in your own life (or in others)? Why do you think our culture is so afraid of quiet? What do we lose by always filling silence with noise? Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Why do you think stillness and knowing God are connected? Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places to pray” (Luke 5:16). Why do you think solitude was so central to his life and ministry? What does that show us about our own need for it? The sermon mentioned that in silence, sometimes we face not just God but also our enemy and our own inner struggles. Why do you think those things surface when we slow down? How should we respond when they do? Where in your life do you find it hardest to create space for silence and solitude? When you do have a moment of quiet, what is your first instinct—to lean into it or to fill it with something? Why? What small “on-ramp” could you try this week such as: 2 minutes of quiet before grabbing your phone, a short walk without headphones, a time of examen prayer? 10. If cultivating outrage is automatic, but cultivating peace is intentional, what intentional practices (besides silence) do you think help us become people of peace? 11. How might building a rhythm of silence and solitude prepare you to engage a noisy and angry world differently?

Perhaps more than other people, Christians are susceptible to having their emotions manipulated. After all, love of neighbor is an express way to show love of God. But that beautiful attribute can be abused, primed, and played. What's happened? Well, we used to encourage compassion: feeling for the other such that one is moved to action. Today the emphasis is upon empathy: deeply sharing the feelings of the other person. I don't think it started out this way, but empathy has been so emphasized that today it can become not only exhausting but sinful. I explain the hows and whys of that possibility. Today our culture wants us to be mired in empathy and that can transpire to the point of being sinful. In my opening reflection I note different kind of Christian spiritualities: Baptisty, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, spiritual warfare, logos oriented, and affective types. I've learned from them all, but I explain what is dominating my own worldview right now. And then, in my cultural remarks I talk about pastors who shamed their congregations in various progressive ways. Have those same pastors either repented or apologized now that our culture is swinging happily back toward common sense?
The Bible is most aware of the problem of anxiety vortexes. But whereas too many believers today get sucked into those vortices the Bible counsels sober-mindedness. In this episode we unpack just what is sober-mindedness and offer some steps for how to achieve emotional sobriety. If you've ever watched professional golf you'll have realized that the pros intentionally seek to remain calm, sober-minded. Why is that? In the NFL Patrick Mahomes is a superb example of sober-mindedness, if not also athletic excellence. Let's examine some biblical cues so we can move toward emotional health. In the episode's cultural reflection I unpack further how unprecedented are the Trump administration's efforts to assess and trim the Federal bureaucracy. America's founders, when they established the grounds for our nation, never foresaw the explosive and unconstrained growth of what has become the fourth branch of government: the bureaucracy. Come laugh and think with me.
Growth scares are what Charles Schwab's Joe Mazzola attributes to recent choppy action in the markets. He believes clarity from the Trump administration will steady trading sentiment. We get enculturated: the anxiety of someone (anyone!) should trump the norms, behaviors, hopes, and values of everyone. "Anxiety trumps all!", we are incessantly taught. So what to do? How to respond? When to respond? I offer several strategies for dealing with hyper-anxious groups and persons, strategies oriented in the notion of differentiation. What is differentiation? How can you practice that as you persue your own peace and stability? What is a Christian's first calling when confronted with an anxious person? Also, in the show's first fifteen minutes I reflect on what Elon Musk and DOGE are doing, what their stated procedural mandates are, and how historically unprecedented are their efforts. Specifically, what has DOGE been up to that is historically unprecedented? Come laugh and think with me.
Families and churches are swept through with anxiety, and they get split, shredded. If we don't see it everywhere we feel the power of anxiety everywhere. Why does anxiety disassemble entire communities? Why is it that the entire community gets pulled down to the level of its least mature members? In this first episode in a new series we talk about the mechanisms that force anxiety down everyone's throats. Why has our country been pulled down into a Peter Pan syndrome? Why is it that company workers are not allowed to name the big Pink Elephant everyone knows is in the room? Why does anxiety seek a "shoot the messenger" strategy? And why oh why is it that when we all gather to help anxious persons it only seems to reinforce, in their minds, that they are after all the most oppressed? In the episode's opening segment I work through the recent curtain-pulls regarding Church culture and the effects of USAID money. How and why have churches worked against their own members' best interests? What happened to the Roman Catholic church that caused it to turn to the government for billions of dollars? The camel has its nose in the tent, let's see what that smells like.

The “big club” that “you ain’t in,” as George Carlin famously put it, is increasingly visible as the presidential election rolls on toward November. Politicians and the donor class that controls them have made it known to the public that they are not representatives of the majority but rather the small elite minority. Nomi Prins, financial historian, author and former Goldman Sachs managing director, joins host Robert Scheer on this episode of the Scheer Intelligence podcast to describe exactly how this process works as well as touch on the evolution of the world economy away from the U.S. As a result of U.S. mishaps in 2008 with the financial crisis as well as the current geopolitical involvements in Ukraine and growing disruptions between the U.S. and China, Prins explains how the world is recognizing the ability to move past the U.S. as well as the dollar: “What's happened is the alliance of nations that needed the U.S. and needed the dollar to trade don't need it anymore.” China’s rise with the BRICS nations alongside has encouraged this, and the U.S.’s policies of supporting the financial system and allowing the banks to run things has led to the rest of the world to say, “We will compete, we'll do exactly what you're doing, but we're going to do it on our own terms.” Back at home, when it comes to economic justice, the two party system, in short, is a farce, and the difference between how the internal system of each party works is hardly noticeable. “Everything kind of moves upward and gets smaller as it moves upward in terms of who has the power and who wants to retain the power,” Prins tells Scheer. That’s why, she asserts, “even if things get questioned on the surface, the idea of changing them doesn't really get pushed throughout party policy.” As much as people try to push for or enact change, the questions fall on deaf ears, Prins says. People “can blame the other party, they can blame each other, but they don't get to blame the system, because they don't feel that there's any real connection or control that they could have over the system.”

At the Tearoom, Paul's surprised to see Fallon looking so well after her drunken night out last week. That is until Fallon explains that she spent most of yesterday in bed at Kirsty's. But now she feels like a reset button has been pressed and is feeling much better about everything. When Fallon notices Paul looking a bit uncomfortable, he says he's fine. But later when Kirsty asks him if he's got fleas or something, he brushes it off as sunburn. Later, Fallon starts to get flashbacks from her night out – and Kirsty's forced to remind her of rapping and being thrown out of the club. Although Fallon's embarrassed, it was also just what she needed, and she now feels she's drawn a bit of a line. And Harrison seems much happier in himself too. Fallon was dreading her birthday, but now she's looking forward to it with Harrison.Justin mentions to Fallon that there's been no further cases of Strangles at The Stables. Things are still fraught there though with Oliver's horse still struggling. Justin's worried about Lilian which is why he's insisted she take a lunch break. When Lilian talks about how stressed she is, Justin broaches finding a replacement for Alice. Lilian's defensive, pointing out that alcoholism is a disease. And anyway Alice didn't do anything wrong, any horse can get Strangles. Justin concedes that they do at least need to look at the practicalities. He'll compromise by sounding out a few potential replacements on a no obligation basis, just so they're prepared for the worst. Lilian agrees as long as Justin's discreet.
In this episode, Dr. Erica Lacher and show host Justin Long discuss Strangles in horses. Topics include symptoms, diagnosing, treating, and prevention.
When Lindsay Clancy's third child is born, her recovery seems to be different. The 32-year-old reaches out to her parents and her in-laws to help her manage the children and things around the home. Her husband, Patrick Clancy sets up a home office in the basement to work remotely, so he can be on hand to help. When Lindsay starts to have thoughts of suicide, and worse, hurting the children, she checks herself into the McLean Psychiatric Hospital, Five days after checking into a psychiatric hospital Lindsay Clancy is reportedly told she doesn't have postpartum depression. Husband Patrick Clancy tells friends that after her hospital stay, Lindsay seems to be getting better. She is sleeping better, interacting with friends and family, and going out in public without any difficulty. When Patrick Clancy asks his wife if she is having any suicidal thoughts, Lindsay Clancy says "No." Later on in the year, with his wife having been prescribed at least 13 different medications, Patrick Clancy texts a friend saying he's concerned that Lindsey has been prescribed too many medications. Patrick allegedly told friends that he worried she was suffering “the worst side effects possible” from one of her prescriptions. He says he thinks she is going through benzodiazepine withdrawal. On a Tuesday afternoon Lindsay Clancy sends a text to her husband to pick up takeout. As Patrick Clancy leaves to pick up dinner, Lindsay sends him a text to stop off by the drugstore and pick up some medicine for the children. Patrick Clancy stops by the drug store to pick up the medication but gets confused as to exactly which medicine to buy. He calls Lindsay Clancy on the phone, but she doesn't answer. She calls back a minute later. Patrick says she sounded like she was in the middle of something. Lindsay answers his question about the medication and Patrick picks it up and heads to the 3V to get their dinner. When Patrick Clancy comes home, he's met with silence. He finds his wife in the backyard. She had jumped out of a second-floor window after slitting her wrists. The children are in the basement, strangled, an exercise band still wound around their necks. Investigators revealed in court papers that Lindsay Clancy allegedly researched "ways to kill" before the deaths of her three children. Clancy is in a hospital ward, paralyzed after her second-floor fall, and faces three counts each of murder and strangulation. Kansas City Prosecutors charge a store employee after a fatal altercation following an alleged shoplifting incident. A recent altercation at the O'Reilly Auto Parts store in Kansas City turned deadly when a 23-year-old man, Diamond Steen, allegedly attempting to shoplift, was strangled by a store employee. The incident has led to a significant criminal charge, highlighting the potentially dire consequences of taking the law into one's own hands. On the evening of Sept. 19, a call was made to the Kansas City Police Department regarding a disturbance at the O'Reilly Auto Parts store located on Parallel Parkway. The caller informed the police dispatch that two men were allegedly shoplifting from the store. This led to a confrontation outside the store premises between the alleged shoplifters and the store employees. By the time the police arrived on the scene, they found one man unresponsive, necessitating immediate CPR. Unfortunately, efforts to revive him failed, and he was declared dead on the spot. The deceased individual was later identified as Diamond Steen. Another individual, involved in the incident and bearing minor injuries, was promptly transported to a local hospital. He is now in stable condition. Wyandotte County District Attorney, Mark Dupree, in a public announcement on Sept. 21, confirmed the arrest of Carl Kemppainen, a 39-year-old employee of the store. Kemppainen has been formally charged with second-degree murder. Elaborating on the seriousness of the charge, Dupree stated that Kemppainen is accused of unlawfully and intentionally causing Steen's death. He further specified that the act was committed "recklessly," showcasing "extreme indifference" towards Steen's life. An autopsy report solidified the narrative of the fatal confrontation. The findings determined that the cause of Diamond Steen's death was strangulation, categorizing the manner of death as a homicide. The gravity of the situation was captured in Dupree's words: "The deceased's airway was completely stopped, and that ultimately caused his death." This incident has now opened a legal can of worms. Dupree mentioned the possibility of additional charges not only against Kemppainen but also other O'Reilly employees involved in the altercation. The ramifications of this event have the potential to extend far beyond just one individual. The severity of the charges brought against Kemppainen is evident in the potential sentencing. If found guilty of the charges, he faces a prison term ranging from 109 months to 493 months. In simpler terms, Kemppainen could be incarcerated for approximately nine to 41 years. As of the latest reports, Kemppainen remains in custody at the Wyandotte County Jail, with his bond set at a hefty $125,000. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
