Dave and Stephanie dig into what caused voters to ignore Donald Trump's felony convictions, indecency, incompetence, narcissism, and dishonesty – and elect him president. This includes a review of the 50-year war waged by the mega-rich and corporations to undermine civility, compassion, equity and rule of law, to elevate the free enterprise system, rob the working class and enrich themselves. The Lewis Powell Memo kicked this into high gear 50 years ago. They also propose theories about why Dave's campaign for president failed in its mission to alert the public, media and policymakers to the ecological overshoot emergency. At this week's debate, Donald Trump spread the deranged lie that immigrants are eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio. Tensions are escalating and terror is spreading: Haitian immigrants living there say they fear for their safety, and on Thursday, Springfield's City Hall was evacuated due to a bomb threat. What if these searing tensions are exactly what Trump and his MAGA allies want? Not that they want violence, but rather that they see supercharged social rifts as desirable? We talked to Andrew Egger, a writer for The Bulwark who has a good new piece on Springfield, about how this saga opens a window on the darkness and malevolence of the MAGA movement. Heard Tell for Friday, March 3nd, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need on clearly seeing what Vladimir Putin's intentions in Ukraine are, how we need to adjust our coverage and terminology to what is happening, and what Putin's own words and action are plainly telling the world he is planning to do in Ukraine. Also, the term "keyboard warriors" is often used to describe folks that don't accomplish anything but caterwauling on the internet, but we discuss how folks on the internet are using comment sections for restaurants, Google Maps, and other site to take the information war to Russia. Heard Tell for Wednesday, February 17th, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need about a disturbing story out of San Francisco about policing using DNA collected from victims of rape and sexual assault as a database to prosecute/investigate other crimes with. Our friend Em Carpenter has a write up at Ordinary Times with the details for us to discuss. Writer PJ O'Rourke passed away, and frequent guest to Heard Tell Michael Siegel does some great writing to explain the impact and legacy of a great writer. Also, we return to a story we covered last week, and the caterwauling over a harm reduction grant that turned into accusations that the Biden Administration was spending $30m to give away free crack pipes. Andrew Egger of The Dispatch investigated not only the original story but the media reaction to it, the reaction to the reaction, the Biden Administration's mix messaging reacting to the reaction, and how the underlying policy discussion of the issue is once again lost as we talk about the viral story instead. Plus, with mask mandates going away and most of the country either open or re-opening, lots of folks are wondering why so many important government agencies like social security are still either closed to the public or greatly reduced in services. We finish off with a great story of a lady who found the abandoned one room school her father went too, and the history and legacy of folks who not that long ago because of segregation had to build their own schoolhouses out in the woods. It's been over seven months since pro-Trump protestors breached the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The meaning of the event remains contested. Was it a genuine coup attempt by an extra-parliamentary faction of the Trump movement? Or was it a disorganized and pathetic act of desperation by Fox News-poisoned rubes? Were the protestors inside the Capitol more like tourists or like terrorists? Was the siege an expression of dangerous anti-democratic forces? Or should we be more worried about the security state's overreaction to January 6th than about the event itself? Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, we try to contextualize the events of January 6th in terms of a longer trajectory of right-wing mobilization in 2020. Conservatives have variously downplayed, ignored, and defended the insurrectionists. Trump and others have begun to treat Ashli Babbitt — killed by a police officer during the riot — as a martyr for the cause. Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson insists the siege was an inside job, planned and executed by the FBI — an implausible theory gaining popularity among conservatives hoping to absolve themselves of culpability. Still other factions of the right (e.g. our old friends at the Claremont Institute) dream about a version of 1/6 that would actually have succeeded. Fair warning: Eating styrofoam may prove more constructive than listening to today's drive-time Remnant, which contains even less substance than your average Seinfeld episode. Jonah (scourge of baggage agents across America), Ryan (softball hero of the think-tank league and true retainer to The Remnant's legacy), Guy (who contributed nothing to this episode because “Talkin' Softball” was stuck in his head), and Nick (full-time Renfield to Jonah's Dracula) reunite to explore the pointlessness of various government departments, kooky conservative reactions to making Juneteenth a federal holiday, and political blogging in the dark ages of the internet. The quartet also has sad news to impart: Beginning next week, Nick will no longer be serving as Jonah's research assistant. Not only is Frieden an expert on the COVID vaccines, but also on listening to those who are concerned about taking it and trying to give them the scientific facts that support getting the shot. Jack interviews Andrew Egger and Audrey Fahlberg, two writers for The Dispatch who witnessed the chaos at Capitol Hill last Wednesday firsthand, to get a full account of what happened.
Was Wednesday’s storming of the Capitol by Trump rally-goers inevitable? Should President Trump be impeached? Where does the Republican Party go from here? Our staff members have been warning about the dangers of Trumpism long before The Dispatch was launched in October 2019. But as David says, “never has vindication felt so miserable.” After all, as he points out, “the vindication was while the republic was under direct attack.” On today’s episode, Sarah and the guys break down the series of events that led to yesterday’s violence. Andrew and Audrey join the show to discuss their on-the-ground reporting at the Capitol on Wednesday, where they spent all day interviewing rally attendees. Does a video show someone burning ballots with votes for Trump? No. Did Michigan ‘magically’ find 138,339 votes for Joe Biden? Nope. What about Wisconsin? Did voter turnout exceed the number of registered voters in the state? A thousand times no. But tight vote counts in battleground states have laid the perfect groundwork for election disinformation to explode online over the past few days. As Steve points out, some bad actors on social media and cable news simply “don’t care whether what they’re saying is actually true.” But not to worry, Dispatch fact checkers Alec Dent and Khaya Himmelman—along with staff writer Andrew Egger—join the podcast today to debunk conspiracy theories surrounding election fraud so you don’t have to. Echelon Insights predicts that we will see record turnout this election cycle. How might a surge in, say, 2o million new voters this year affect the presidential race in battleground states? “If we’re talking the day after the election about why the polls were wrong,” Sarah warns on today’s episode, “it will be because of the extraordinary turnout, and [pollsters] were unable to figure out where those turnout increases were coming from.” Tune in to today’s episode to hear David and Sarah’s take on early voting in swing states, the importance of political rallies, and the DoJ’s antitrust lawsuit against Google. As we near the end of another Supreme Court term, speculation abounds over a Court retirement. Would the resulting nomination battle be more or less contentious than the appointment of Justice Kavanaugh? David and Sarah answer this thought experiment while also touching on the implications this scenario would have on the 2020 election. They also break down rulings on robocalls and faithless electors. When and how can you constitutionally defend yourself? The question comes after a gun-toting St. Louis couple made a show of force against Black Lives Matter protesters. On a more lighthearted note, David concludes the podcast by interviewing Sarah on her career path and what landed her at The Dispatch. Show Notes: -Check out the Supreme Court’s rulings in the robocall case (Barr v. American Association of Political Consultants, Inc.) and the faithless electors case (Chiafalo v. Washington). -Click here for a video of the Brooks Brothers militia v. BLM protesters standoff and be sure to read Andrew Egger’s interview with Stephen Mutowski in The Dispatch for an in-depth legal analysis of the incident.
