In this episode of HALO Talks, Pete Moore sits down with Tony Saxby, founder of W.O.L.F Fitness ("Workout Live Fierce") to explore his lifelong path in the HALO space. (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoors.) From humble beginnings as a teenage personal trainer at a local YMCA, through years of law enforcement, to building and scaling a unique community-centered gym franchise (that has attracted the attention of Dave Bautista), Saxby shares his philosophy for creating spaces that go far beyond four walls and equipment. Discover how W.O.L.F differentiates itself from big-box competitors like Planet Fitness and Crunch by prioritizing community, elevated amenities, and grassroots engagement, and why Tony believes finding the right franchise partners is the key to sustainable success. Whether you're interested in entrepreneurship, fitness, or learning what it takes to build a genuine community, this episode promises valuable insights from the frontlines of gym innovation. When Saxby opines on the truth about some franchise ownership situations, he pulls no punches. "One, they're often hyper-unaffordable for the regular person, you need like an investment group. Two, they're not really a gym. Their job is marketing. Their job is reselling you equipment every three to five years at full market while they're getting it for a lot less. That was something that we would never sign, my wife and I." Key themes discussed Building community-centric gyms over traditional gym models Challenges and lessons in franchising and selective growth Differentiating W.O.L.F gyms from competitors on amenities and size Importance of grassroots, local marketing and B2B partnerships Flexible pricing structure based on regional real estate Franchisee empowerment and fit for the W.O.L.F brand Upgrading tech and CRM systems for scaling operations A Few Key Takeaways 1.Community First, Gym Second: Tony emphasized that the W.O.L.F franchise is focused on building genuine community connections before building gyms. They prioritize engaging in grassroots efforts, fostering relationships with local businesses, and hosting regular open houses to embed themselves in neighborhoods. 14:09 2. Unique Franchise Approach and Accessibility: Unlike many fitness franchises, W.O.L.F aims for affordability and accessibility for regular individuals, not just large investment groups. Saxby's goal is to find "100 cool people" to run gyms defined by core values like honor, integrity, community, and commitment, rather than simply expanding numbers. 04:16 3. Selective Franchise Growth: Tony also talked about the hard lessons learned from early franchise expansion, admitting that saying yes to everyone led to some early failures. The brand has since become highly selective, investing in vetting and strong systems to ensure only the right people join. 05:19 4. Differentiation in the Market: W.O.L.F distinguishes itself from brands like Planet Fitness and Crunch not by undercutting prices, but by capping memberships for a better member experience, offering premium amenities (like red light therapy, cold plunge, and soon hyperbaric chambers), and (wisely!) resisting the race to the bottom on pricing. 5. Adaptability and Member Loyalty: The story came full circle with Saxby sharing examples of strong member loyalty, such as community support during COVID and gratitude over continual gym improvements. These reinforce W.O.L.F's commitment to being more than just a gym. It's very much a valued piece of members' daily lives. 21:54 Resources: Tony Saxby: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-saxby-b120982a3 W.O.L.F. We discuss how fathers experience physiological and psychological changes despite not giving birth, the vulnerability and opportunities for growth these changes bring, and how societal structures often fail to support new parents adequately. Dr. Saxby shares insights from her research, including how caregiving impacts brain structure in both mothers and fathers and the importance of fathers being involved at various stages of a child's development. I'm going to be real here. When I look back at my life from my death bed, I am not going to say … “if only I'd spent more time on Linked In”. Most of the people I speak to would be happy to spend less time on social media and free themselves from the guilty feeling that they should be doing ‘more'! But the truth of it is that social media is important in a number of ways to building and growing your speaking career. Here's the thing though, there is a way to do social media on your terms. And that is what my guest Mark Saxby is here to share with you. Mark is more than just ‘another social media expert'. Combining his experience as an award-winning BBC and ITV journalist with his expertise gained after setting up one of the UK's first specialist social media agencies in 2011, Mark and his clients have generated more than £20 million in sales through social media. Mark also founded the national Positive Social charity, which goes into schools to teach young people how to take back control of their lives from social media. So … sit back and find out how to make social media less ‘faff' and more fun. What you'll discover: Why Mark left an award winning career in journalism to create a social media agency. Social media strategy for speakers. What's best using multiple platforms or focusing on one? How much attention you should be paying to AI. Mark's view on speakers using paid social media. How to use storytelling to get results with social media. The three biggest tips Mark has for speakers for getting gigs through social media. Why Mark says people should ‘Be more Colin' The charity social media project that is changing lives in education How Mark's spirituality impacts how he runs his agency. MSNBC has been hemorrhaging audience share since election night, which isn't altogether surprising except - now that liberals and progressives are re-evaluating how their messaging should travel and be delivered, this may be a permanent dip. Well, it can't help that "Morning Joe" hosts Joe Scarborough and Mike Brzezinski shlepped to Mar-A-Lago to "kiss the ring" last weekend, and admitted as much on Monday morning. "Why wouldn't we?" Mike responds. She then timelines this "political warfare" back a mere five years, and a couple of former US Senators gathered in Athens yesterday to wax nostalgic about their early 21st century tenures compared to today's divisiveness. They're all wrong, or seem to forget a few things that I, for one, did not. Before going there, though, a little attention is warranted for current "mean girls" Nancy Mace and - sigh - Marjorie Taylor Greene, who've decided to pick a fight with incoming Delaware Congresswoman Sarah McBride over ... bathrooms. Because of course. How is the left to be civil with that? Back to Athens, where former Senators Heidi Heitkamp and Saxby Chambliss sat for the Isakson Symposium on Political Civility at the University of Georgia yesterday. Never mind that Saxby ran a repulsive attack ad tying Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein to a decorated war veteran who'd lost three limbs in Vietnam. Max Cleland deserved better than to have been 'swiftboated.' Tell us, dear Saxby, how woeful political discourse is now vs. how much more civil things were when you were flinging mud, sir.
Ever wondered how creativity and strategy can take a business from ordinary to extraordinary? In this episode, I sit down with David Saxby, a marketing expert who's known for thinking outside the box and bringing a fresh approach to business strategies. He shares insights from his career, including how his innovative thinking helped brands like Shaw Cable thrive in highly competitive markets.David also dives into common mistakes businesses make, like trying to target everyone or sending confusing messages. His advice? Find the right market gap, focus on strategy first, and understand the psychology of your customers. Through engaging stories, he breaks down how businesses can better connect with their audiences, especially in a digital world where attention is hard to grab.Highlights:Creativity is just the start — success comes when it's paired with strong strategy and execution.Businesses often fail by targeting everyone; the key is finding your niche and focusing there.Effective marketing is about understanding customer psychology and how to cut through the noise.Building real, human connections with customers is still vital, even in a tech-driven world.David's success formula: strategy first, then creative execution, leading to long-term growth and differentiation.Connect with David:Website: sparkcommunications.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-saxby/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100081172687496Twitter: https://twitter.com/davidsaxbyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/davidsaxbyspeakerEmail: dsaxby@sparkcommunications.comIn appreciation for being here, I have some gifts for you:A LinkedIn Checklist for setting up your fully optimized Profile:An opportunity to test drive the Follow Up system I recommend by taking the3 Card Sampler – you won't regret it.AND … Don't forget to connect with me on LinkedIn and be eligible for mycomplimentary LinkedIn profile audit – I do one each month for a luckylistener!Connect with me:http://JanicePorter.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/janiceporter/https://www.facebook.com/janiceporter1https://www.instagram.com/socjanice/Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! LIVE April 22, 2023 @ 7:00 pm EST on Facebook: Join Dr. Gena Saxby Crawford and guest speakers discussing “How Can I Live A Balanced, Blessed and Bold Life."Dr. Gena Saxby Crawford is the Pastor of PowerPoint Christian Ministries and founder of LSC Ministries. You may remember Dr. Crawford from Season 1 Ep4 Pt 1 & Pt 2, this author, consultant and educator is back with a new conference called “The Room Experience”. “Have you ever felt uneasy in a room and decided that it was time to leave? Have you ever been ordered to stay in one place and felt like the walls were closing in on you? Are there rooms in your house that you loathe spending time in? As a child, were there rooms that you were forbidden to enter? Life will often present opportunities for all of us to experience challenges however, in the middle of the experience we often fail to see them as opportunities for growth or change. When things get interesting or uncomfortable, our first inclination is to leave the space. What if in this space, is your healing or answers for which you long? What if it is the will of God for you to take time to sit and stay in the place you are so adamant about running from? By definition, a room is a space that presents the opportunity for something to be done. Not only is it space, but sufficient space that fits the occasion…any occasion. If the occasion is healing, there's space in the room. If the occasion is forgiveness or revelation…it's in the room!Part of the issue with staying in the room, is the fact that where you live often has more than one room for you to retreat to. This makes it quite easy to run from one room to another, leaving pieces of you in different places. Why is staying in one room important? It allows you to stay focus, it allows you to feel what you need to feel, and let go of what you need to let go. Staying in the room presents the opportunity for you to sit still long enough to let the tears flow, the anger grow and the peace to show.” Join us LIVE: The Room Experience - Live Facebook April 22, 2023 @ 7pm EST.How to connect: Website: www.p2experience.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/p2_christian.ministries/?hl=enFB: https://www.facebook.com/p2experience and https://www.facebook.com/iampastorgcLinkTree: www.linktr.ee/lscministriesWebsite: www.lscministries633.comMerchandise: Face Value and Right The VisionCheck out this episode & others here on The Path Podcast & on Apple, Spotify, Google & other podcast platforms. How can coffee change the world? According to Saxby's CEO and Founder, Nick Bayer, it begins with educating young entrepreneurs. This week Laura and Nick discuss how Saxby's is empowering young people to embrace the humanity of the hospitality industry and build a business that creates an impact. Here are a few things you'll learn during this conversation: How Saxby's created an academic experience while building real businesses Why every young entrepreneur needs a course in critical thinking skills for business How to develop your empathy skills Why Saxby's made B Corp status a priority What you can do to hold your team accountable to your mission and values During the 24-Hour Influence Challenge, Nick encourages you to respond to all digital communication within 24 hours and evaluate how it impacts trust and relationship building. Nick Bayer has always been in the business of bringing people together, whether it's as one of Philadelphia Business Journal's "Most Admired CEOs" or as a consummate team captain since Little League. So when he created Saxbys in 2005, Nick never really considered it to be a coffee company — instead, it's a social impact company fueled by amazing food, beverage, and hospitality. Saxbys has since grown from one corner café to a nearly 30-unit, Philadelphia-based business with a singular mission: Make Life Better. For Nick Bayer, “making life better" began by fostering an O.D.D (outgoing, detail-oriented, and disciplined) team, committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and aligned by their shared entrepreneurial spirit and Saxbys' core values. Today, that team spans over 500 members across the Northeast that represent the change-makers of tomorrow. To that point, Bayer introduced Saxbys' pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) in 2015 in partnership with Drexel University — the nation's first entirely student-run cafe where students earn full academic credit and wages through a university cooperative education program. Bayer's vision for the program is to embolden the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing undergrad students with tangible experience as a supplement to traditional classroom learning. In five short years, one ELP cafe has blossomed to a dozen, with five more partnerships opening in the Fall of 2021. Nick is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, an adjunct professor at Drexel University and the Executive in Residence at Temple University's Fox School of Business. He serves on the Board of The Franklin Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University's Close School of Entrepreneurship and Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center, as well as being a Corporate Council Member for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been recognized as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, EY's "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" and among the “100 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Philadelphia” by the Philadelphia Business Journal. He resides in Center City Philadelphia with his wife Haley and son Luke.
