TSR-U-KIDDING-ME: Tabletop Twitter got weird these last few weeks as debates exploded around the tweets made by Ernest G. Gygax, Jr.––son of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator, Gary Gygax––where he doubles down on strong, anti-SJW views in support of his new RPG, Giantlands. SLAPP FEST: Andrew also checks in with the current legal fight started by Chris Avellone––formerly of Black Isle and Obisidian Entertainment––as he tries to sue people who said mean things about him on the internet. MISTER, I'LL MAKE AN EPIC OUT OF YOU: Andrew and D. Bethel briefly touch upon the interesting and promising live-action adaptation of the animated Disney classic, Mulan, even though this seems to be making considerable changes from the animated source material (seemingly to be more in-line with the folkloric source material). Here's the Twitter thread that Andrew mentioned, starting here with this tweet by Jenn Ravenna. OBLIVIOUS OBSIDIAN: After Chris Avellone's controversial interview where he makes argument about political content in video games, a former coworker of his at Obsidian––Leonard Boyarski––steps into the trap when discussing the politics of the upcoming Obsidian RPG, Outer Worlds, in an interview with PC Gamer. APOLITICAL APOCALYPSE: A recent article at VG247.com interviewed (as part of the piece) games designer and writer, Chris Avellone––writer/designer of games such as Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II–––who argued not only that his writing was without any political inspiration nor had any political agenda (small "p"), but that he "[didn't] condone developers who [wanted] to do political games or make a statement" (McKeand). In fairness, the quote has since been edited by VG247.com, replacing "condone" with "condemn", softening Avellone's criticism a little bit, stating that Avellone wrote "doesn't condone" accidentally and his actual sentiment is more clearly presented with the correction. Still, this makes us think––are games (or any text in popular culture) apolitical, or can they be? Andrew and D. Bethel investigate how this is a problem. RELEVANT LINKS: McKeand, Kirk. Is Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy dead? Last week, Disney announced its future slate of movies including three "untitled" Star Wars films being released December 2022, 2024 and 2026. Along with this announcement, came the returning questions about Rian Johnson's previously announced trilogy.YouTubers and bloggers immediately began declaring that these announced films could only be the highly anticipated series being written and produced by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the producers of the mega-hit TV series Game of Thrones. But could all of this really mean that Rian Johnson's trilogy is dead? Or is this nothing more than wishful thinking from haters of The Last Jedi? We separate fact from fiction and throw in a little informed speculation to determine what we believe is and isn't going on. Up until now, fans have almost exclusively seen Star Wars from the perspective of the Rebellion and the Jedi. But Tie Fighter aims to make heroes of the Empire. Source: https://screenrant.com/star-wars-tie-fighter-comic-rebels/Pedro Pascal, who played Oberyn Martell on the fourth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, believes that the fantasy mega series owes its popularity to Star Wars. “I see enormous parallels between the world of Star Wars and the world of Game of Thrones,” Pascal said. “Game of Thrones might not exist if not for Star Wars, in the way that this world-building genre [took] science fiction to a new level in the way that Game of Thrones takes fantasy to a new level. And the way that it represents such concrete realities that we live in, although the irony being that it’s science fiction and fantasy.” Games of Thrones is becoming more and more connected to Star Wars. Gwendoline Christie (who played Captain Phasma in the Sequel Trilogy) and Emilia Clarke (who played Qira in Solo: A Star Wars Story) are stars of the series. And of course the shows producers are currently “crafting” a series of Star Wars films.Source: https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-mandalorians-pedro-pascal-shares-the-common-thread-1834640225Chris Avellone, best known for his work on the wildly popular Knights of the Old Republic video game, has been announced to be a writer for the highly anticipated Jedi: Fallen Order being released this November. And while this will make many Star Wars fans happy, his recent comments regarding The Last Jedi are sure to ruffle some feathers. In an interview with VideoGameChronicle.com, Avellone said: “I thought that portrayal of Luke Skywalker was very weak. I thought they gave him a scapegoat role that wasn’t merited and didn’t fit with his character, in my opinion. I like the fact that they were playing around with it, but at the same time I didn’t like the execution and I thought it could have been handled a lot better or differently.” Avellone went on to say that he felt that many of the characters and plot decision were subpar. “I also thought it was a case of comedy goes too far, side characters and massive detour plots were rapidly introduced… I liked what they were trying to do, I just didn’t like how it was executed.”Source: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/jedi-fallen-order-writer-didnt-like-last-jedis-execution/Check out our website: https://www.tatooinesons.com/Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/tatooine-sonsCheck out our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/tatooinesonsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TatooineSonsLike us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TatooineSonsCheck out our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tatooinesons

When the roguelike trend crested several years ago, FTL stood high among its brethren. There wasn't really much like it at the time (and to be honest, there still isn't much like it). Fleeing from an oncoming force of Rebels, a lone ship must make its way across the stars to alert the Federation of the oncoming danger - and perhaps equip itself well enough along the way to defeat the Rebel flagship. It's hard, tactical, and completely different every time you boot up a new game. The team at Subset Games should be very proud of what they achieved. So why are we talking about FTL now? A. Jack has been itching to talk about it for a while, but couldn't get it into a full episode with the co-hosts B. Subset Games' next title, Into the Breach will be launching sometime soon and sometimes it's nice for this show to be somewhat topical. Once, long ago, our team of hosts had an experience that nearly changed the very nature of their existence: They interviewed Chris Avellone. Without much in the way of hyperbole, our team was revitalized through a 40 minute interview that turned into a near 2-hour podcasting experience. Chris Avellone, a writing legend of modern times and Josh's youth, has once again returned to impart wisdom and knowledge. The whole group also makes a large amount of dick & fart jokes, and Chris helps promote the upcoming Pathfinder: Kingsmaker. It's a Constantly Calibrating Podcast show, let's not think too high or mighty of ourselves. If you liked the episode, let us know in whatever comments you see fit, or with a review maybe? Same goes for if you hated the entire experience. Furthermore, only you can help us convince Chris to come back to complete the trilogy of discussions. Or perhaps to take Josh on as apprentice or DM a D&D show for us. *cough*

Industry luminary Chris Avellone joins the show once again to talk about his recent work on Prey. First, Kirk and Jason talk a bit about Nier: Automata (6:55) and the Nintendo Switch (11:15) before jumping into this week's news: Zelda reportedly coming to smartphones (16:24); Tom Brady appearing on the cover of Madden 18 (21:19); and Alan Wake disappearing from Xbox Live and Steam (28:55). Then we speak to Avellone (34:30) about his writing work on Prey and how he constructed all of those great characters. We even BLOW HIS MIND with the revelation of a fantastic easter egg. Finally, we've got a couple of listener questions (1:04:17) including one that really Takes a Chance.

This week, the guys had the pleasure of talking with Chris Avellone! In a whirlwind of fangirling, fervently spoken “F*** You’s”, and in depth looks into the process of producing larger RPGs titles, we had a fantastic time. One of the larger items that kept coming back in all the discussion, is that sometimes the simplest way to approach a problem is to write it out by hand. That and having someone outside of yourself and your vision to look at your work. There were a lot of great nuggets in this week's episode, and we hope enjoy this as much as we did on this episode of Constantly Calibrating!
