We're continuing our 2001 hiatus with Subset Games' Into the Breach. We love an indie game and we love an oft-overlooked genre, which means this little game is just screaming down OGA alley. Hunter describes it as a "perfect game," and it may take us a lot of time to decide what that's worth and how much of a tax it might be. There's an 8x8 board, pieces can be moved, removed, or modified, but what else? How would you get ideas if you were working on chess but with a new twist? This tool shines a light on where your design could go. See also Into the Breach by Subset Games, which is a brilliant and innovative design. This week Eric and Nicky discuss Into the Breach by Subset Games in a turn-based episode of Press any Button. Into the Breach is a turn-based strategy video game developed and published by Subset Games. In the game you control a squad of Mechs from the future sent to hold off an alien threat. Each attempt to save the world presents a new randomly generated challenge. About us: Press Any Button hosts Nicky (a new gamer) and Eric (a lifetime gamer) are a married couple who both love video games. For every video game they will discuss its past (history of the game, developers story, and fun facts), present (game play, game review and strategy), and future (will there be a sequel?? A movie?) BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE… Every game also comes with a challenge presented by the host that chose the game. If the challenge is not completed then whoever failed has to do a video game rap! So if you want to learn more about video games, hear some nerdy video game raps, or just have a good time this is the podcast for you. We try to cover all types of video games including: Retro and New video games - Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, Sega, and PC games - Any and all genres including RPG, Simulation, Beat em up, platforming, mystery, first person shooter, sandbox, puzzle, action adventure, etc. Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pressanybutton_podcast/ Credits: Nicky Smith Eric Luedtke Music by Mark Spurlock References: https://www.shacknews.com/article/99108/into-the-breach-preview-ftls-creators-pit-mechs-against-aliens-in-post-apocalyptic-warfare https://www.linkedin.com/in/justin-ma-630893b https://www.polygon.com/features/2013/3/12/4090522/the-opposite-of-fail-the-story-of-ftl https://twitter.com/subsetgames?lang=en https://www.dnb.com/business-directory/company-profiles.subset_games_llc.7c3fab77f00360bd8adb1460ef1542ea.html https://subsetgames.com/

My guests on today's show are the creators of the amazing FTL and the upcoming Into the Breach, Justin Ma & Matt Davis AKA Subset Games. We talk about how they both moved to China to get their first job in games, working at 2K in Shanghai, and how they got to know each other as desk mates and eventually, inspired by weekly board game sessions, decided to try and make a game together. That chance meeting led to one of my favourite games of the past ten years, FTL. This episode is packed. We talk about both of their early video game loves like Full Throttle and X-Wing, what it was like for Justin growing up with a dad who worked at Activision, how Matthew rediscovered boardgaming in college which ultimately, set him on a path to China and back again. We also talk a lot about their creative relationship, the upcoming Into the Breach, and a whole bunch about the development of FTL including the boardgame influences, the impact of the kickstarter and how they wanted to make players feel like Jean Luc Picard. 01:06 - We've not talked about it before, but Sam absolutely LOVES vinegar. So much so that he gives his chips a "double soak", which is about as eye-wateringly acidic as you think. 05:24 - What we HAVE talked about before is seasonal playlists for music, and it being Summer, we think Loffee is the perfect accompaniment to this time of year. 10:23 - Kris went to Dortmund and had a lovely time of it, but he discovered two shocking things. 1) that he actually does like beer (when it's accompanied by fruit and / or vodka), and 2) that you can swap out the sausage from “pigs in blankets” for an entirely unexpected ingredient and it's pretty hecking tasty. 16:05 - XCOM 2 is "probably my favourite game" says Sam, and it's got to partly be due to the fact you can name your characters. And on that note... 17:58 - Dan's been playing FTL: Faster Than Light and Sam's been playing Into the Breach, both of which are from Subset Games and in both of which you can re-name your characters (so that's an immediate thumbs up, obviously). They both talk about why they're enjoying these games so much, delving into FTL's roguelike spaceship-em-up and Into the Breach's mech puzzle strategy. 35:36 - This section is all about Sam’s Leaking Pipe™. 41:00 - Dan's thrown more money at the upcoming Shenmue III, to snag himself a physical copy of the game. So it feels like a good time to discuss why the originals were so pioneering back in the day and, to some extent, how they were very demanding of their players. 52:09 - And we have another question to read out, this time courtesy of Richard from We're Not Wizards, and it's all about tattoos and cannibalism, so that's nice. If YOU would like to send us a question about tattoos, cannibalism, or something else entirely, then DM us on Twitter or Facebook, or send us an e-mail via stayinginpod@gmail.com if that floats your boat. Into The Breach - духовный наследник Faster Than Light, игры-откровения 2012-го года. When the roguelike trend crested several years ago, FTL stood high among its brethren. There wasn't really much like it at the time (and to be honest, there still isn't much like it). Fleeing from an oncoming force of Rebels, a lone ship must make its way across the stars to alert the Federation of the oncoming danger - and perhaps equip itself well enough along the way to defeat the Rebel flagship. It's hard, tactical, and completely different every time you boot up a new game. The team at Subset Games should be very proud of what they achieved.  So why are we talking about FTL now? A. Jack has been itching to talk about it for a while, but couldn't get it into a full episode with the co-hosts B. Subset Games' next title, Into the Breach will be launching sometime soon and sometimes it's nice for this show to be somewhat topical.   Outro music: Line Defense 'Reversing the Alien Attack' by Stam (http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR03678) You can follow the show on Twitter: @BestGamesPeriod Or download the podcast from Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/thebestgamesperiod Don't forget to sign up for Extra Life to help sick and injured kids in hospitals around the US and Canada by playing games! 02/24/2017 - Quick thoughts on Uncharted 4 and Darkest Dungeon.  FTL developer Subset Games announces their new game.  Star Trek: Bridge Crew became more appealing.  Valve is actually making games again.  Cup of Noodles are back.  Bethesda is making new IPs to destroy later.  Destiny 2 is probably going to suck.  Payday 3 and assloads of inevitable micro-transactions confirmed.  Paladins officially became the new Tribes Ascend.  Stop making games into films please.  For Honor is full of problems.  Award shows are still dumb.
