As we announced last week, today we're diving headfirst into Knights of the Old Republic II, Obsidian's follow-up to the BioWare game that dug into the ancient history of our favorite galaxy far, far away. (Though before we dig into that, we talk more about that announcement from last week to try to share some of our thoughts and process about getting where we got.) Because KOTOR II is a pretty big meal, we took our time today to set the table. We dig into our characters, the state of the galaxy after KOTOR II, the mods we used, and the various technical fixes we had to adjust for. If you're playing along with us on a device that can run mods, well here's that mod list (along with additional instructions) for you. (That last sentence had a link in it. If your podcatcher doesn't see one, try going to our site directly.) Finally, another little announcement. We know that many folks don't have time to play through all of KOTOR II along with us. To help those of y'all who nevertheless want to get a sense of the game, Austin will be uploading an episode-by-episode Let's Play to the official AMCA YouTube Channel. Here's the first episode! I know, I know haha. Fortunately, his game is a lot cooler than he is. We're talking Shadows of the Empire! I only got into Star Wars about 3 years ago, and once I saw the movies, I had to start playing the games. And I'm happy to say that, six games into the library, I haven't played a "bad" Star Wars video game yet. This one is probably the closest, but I don't think it's bad. It's just an early N64 game. This is one of our "stupid sexy sponsored" episodes, so said sponsor and long-time hot dog, PBRJax, swings by the show to explain why he's such a Dash fan. And then the Chewy to my Han Solo, my buddy Tyler, gives me a call to talk about how none of us can beat this fucking game. And before we save the galaxy, I use the force to summon another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what my favourite (and least favourite) video games shows/movies are. Should a parent let their kid beat them at video games? And when will I play Baldur's Gate 3!?! Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! August has 31 days, but it sure felt short on news. Nevertheless, the podcast must go on...because...um... Nothing much happened this month according to Disney, but that's because they decided to get sneaky. If LucasFilm doesn't announce the change, can you hear a redwood fall at Skywalker Ranch? I grow tired of the way things are being handled, both at the parks an on the small screen. This month there is a note about Han's blaster, stuff about Knights of the Old Republic and KOTOR II, and Andor is right around the corner. Ahsoka makes the cut, Bad Batch gets an (officially official) release date, and Obi-Wan Kenobi isn't left behind by the Disney Gallery after all. That's...pretty much it. Fable was gonna be the most revolutionary game since Super Mario Bros. It was gonna change gaming forever. It was going to be legendary. And then it came out. And we played it. And it was...fine. It's not a bad game by any means. It's just kinda...fine. My buddy Keegs joins me on the show this week, and we get into the stuff we liked, loved, and hated about Fable. It might not have changed gaming forever, but that doesn't mean it was a bad game. It was just...fine. And before we Fable it up, I serve up another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'! This time around, we get into the topic of micro-transactions, and whether or not they're the black eye on gaming we all make them out to be. Does anyone else get excited for a long gaming session and then struggle to pick something to play? And will we ever cover Neo-Geo or Turbo Grafx games on the show? PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring 3 of the heaviest hitters from 2004: Metal Gear Solid 3, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and KOTOR II. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on 2005's Capcom horror classic, Resident Evil 4. We place it in its time and then talk immediately about how it really kicked the third-person action-adventure game into higher gear. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to the second typewriter Issues covered: the Capcom 5, having some trouble getting the game off the ground, success of the remake, a really different feel, relying on establishing POV shots from slashers, horror movie touchpoints, moving away from straight-up zombie games, differences between Chris and Leon, meeting Hunnigan via the Codec, popularizing the third-person shooter, hold-overs from the older controls, fighting the controls, embodying the character, disempowerment, pick a spot and stand your ground, jerky enemies, shooting a weapon out of the air, opening up the level design to multiple paths, the gun-and-run, Leon's better tactics, "various awesome actions," moving saves away from being a resource, a more revealed map, having people coming at you with pitchforks and torches, can you get the chainsaw guy?, disconnects with marketing, getting lucky to have marketing departments who got it, moral choices and the morally objectionable, motivating the character choices for evil, coloring the tone of dialog to reflect your choices, what weapons we chose with BioShock, talking about the wrench kill, loving crossbows, style over substance in Control. And now it's time for us to say goodbye to the Old Republic series, for now, as we conclude our discussion of Knights of the Old Republic II! This is part II of my two part series, KOTOR II will always be my favorite game because of the story, its a story of forgiveness, loneliness, and redemption. On top of that it is Star Wars! Stay tuned for the last two episodes of Season 1 where I will be doing a top games of the decade by year and worst/disappointing games of the decade by year.
As time marches on, many people remember the BioWare/Star Wars classic Knights of the Old Republic fondly. It stands out to them as the quintessential RPG experience and a bar by which all subsequent RPGs find themselves judged. Less frequently, however, do people consider Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, the technically flawed, but narratively richer younger sibling. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment under some of the tightest time constraints RPG developers have ever experienced, Obsidian was tasked with delivering a sequel to one of the greatest RPGs of all-time with only a year of development time. Were they able to succeed? Joining us this week is prolific game critic and Escapist columnist Elijah Beahm. In addition to his gaming and writing talents, Elijah happens to be one of the most knowledgeable figures on the Star Wars universe that you could hope to find. We talk about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order before launching into a prolonged discussion about the trials and tribulations of KotOR II. We also have a spoiler discussion of Respawn's Fallen Order that you can listen to if you become a patron over on patreon.com/bestgamesperiod! This week's topics: Remembering Stan Lee Casting choices for The Mandalorian including Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano Galaxy’s Edge Park Info - John Williams original score for the park, and two rides were teased Star Wars Commonwealth Group Question: With Star Wars episode 9 a little over a year away, every Star Wars fan is in full speculation mode. We all have things we'd love to see in the final installment, but I see a huge focus on things we don't want to see. Reylo, Force Ghost Jamborees, the salvation of Ben Solo, these are just a couple of the major "Please Don'ts" of episode 9. My question is: Looking back at both the OT and the Prequels, what were some "please don'ts of their final installments that both made it into the film, and didn't make it? Which scenes do you think were not wanted by the general audience, but now years later, are beloved? Finally, do you think it's possible to have any of the "please don'ts" be in Episode 9 and have it change your mind if it's done correctly? No Drink November has ended quite suddenly!
