In this episode, we talk to Karine Guenan, Vice President of ZEROe ecosystem at Airbus, who shares insights into Airbus's ambitious plans to bring hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft to market by 2035 and the unprecedented ecosystem development required to make this vision a reality.Guenan discusses:The technical challenges of developing hydrogen-powered aircraft, including the need for cryogenic storage at -253° C and specially designed insulated tanks, contrasting with traditional jet fuel storage in aircraft wings.Airbus's exploration of two potential technological platforms - fuel cell propulsion and direct hydrogen combustion - aimed at serving the 100-200 seat market with ranges of 1,000-2,000 nautical miles. The extensive ecosystem partnerships being built worldwide, including collaborations with airports (like Gatwick), energy suppliers (like Air Products), airlines (like easyJet), and lessors (like Avalon) to create the infrastructure needed for hydrogen-powered aviation. The advantages of hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel source when produced from renewable energy, including its potential to reduce both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. The safety considerations around hydrogen aviation, emphasising that hydrogen is non-toxic and actually dissipates more quickly than conventional fuels in case of leakage.Throughout the conversation, Guenan emphasises that while the 2035 target for commercial entry into service is ambitious, it's achievable through unprecedented collaboration across the aviation industry and beyond. She notes that while hydrogen aircraft will have a marginal impact by 2050, they represent a crucial long-term solution for aviation's decarbonisation challenge.Looking to the future, Guenan advocates for a multi-pronged approach to aviation sustainability, combining immediate solutions like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with longer-term transformative technologies like hydrogen-powered aircraft. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Jane Ashton, Director of Sustainability at easyJet. Vertical Aerospace is one of the world's leading advanced air mobility developers, at least when it comes to its order book. Some 1,500 units of its VX4 eVTOL aircraft have already been pre-ordered (including a 500 aircraft order from Avolon, which the lessor then managed to place in a matter of months with a handful of airlines), but before that, Vertical Aerospace will have to complete a thorough a comprehensive testing and certification process. And no one better placed to talk precisely about this than our guest on this episode: Michael Cervenka, Chief Technology Officer at Vertical Aerospace.Michael is an industry veteran, who, prior to joining Vertical Aerospace, worked for quite a few years at that other flagship of British aerospace industry, Rolls-Royce. We recorded this conversation as Vertical Aerospace was preparing for a key step in its development process: its first piloted untethered flight. So, we talked with Michael in full detail about this ongoing testing programme, its current status and the challenges that lie ahead. And, then, of course, we discussed in detail other aspects of Vertical Aerospace's plans , such as its value proposition, its industrial plan, which, unlike other eVTOL developers, involves a whole ecosystem of partners working together. There was also time to discuss financial and commercial aspects of the project and even some little known aspects of the project, such as the main differences between an eVTOL and a helicopter or why prototypes are painted white. So, tune in for an in-depth conversation about one of the most fascinating eVTOL projects in the world right now!

Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donoghue indicates continuing support for the startup sector in Ireland My coverage of Scale Ireland's headline event on September 12th began with some networking in a meeting space allocated by Avolon, one of Scale Ireland's longest supporters. I got chatting with Netsso's CEO and Founder Eoin O'Doherty. He explained how his digital product worked allowing those in the legal field to collate and organise their case files. After an interesting walk-through of Netsso's product by Eoin, we were in turn walked into the main auditorium area for the event. Irish Finance Minister speaks at Scale Ireland Martina Fitzgerald, CEO of Scale Ireland kicked off the main attraction at midday making formal introductions. She noted startups as a key element in continuing government policy around economic development. Minister Paschal Donoghue then took the stage with his keynote speech acknowledging the value and importance of the ‘startup sector'. He noted that now is a great time to be thinking about the development of our (environmental) impact and digital industries through our startup sector, which the government sees as key to our economic future. He then mentioned the new schemes for startups like the 90 million euro fund for new ventures in key areas explaining that the government seeks via the budget to maintain ‘balanced economic supports' for a sustainable future in Ireland. The minister stayed on to participate in the panel discussions chaired by Martina Fitzgerald. First up were the entrepreneurs with Jack Pierce, Co-Founder and CFO of Mayflyer, Orlaith Ryan, Co-Founder and CTO of Shorla Oncology and Matthew Coffey, Co-Founder and CEO, Squid. Wayflyer is valued at 1.6 billion euros and is a fintech success example that has 55% of its investment from the US and the balance from the rest of the world. Jack's main ask is the reduction of the administrative burden around raising money and dealing with Enterprise Ireland. His burdens around administration are understandable given he was a 3 person operation 3 years ago and has gone through a monumental growth spurt as a startup. Orlaith's deep R&D involvement with Shorla Oncology has seen her work very closely with a colleague Sharon Cunningham on the development of 3 pharma products in Ireland. Her startup has operations based in Ireland and the USA. She sees her scaling plans as going through a critical phase over the coming year given the developmental stage of her products. Orlaith after raising 10 million euros would like to see fewer administration burdens around raising cash, which would then allow her to strengthen her focus on the business and its technological development. Matthew's company ‘Squid' has done what we all wish someone would do, take our points cards from our favourite retailers and store them in one central app on our phones. Squid started in coffee shops centralising loyalty schemes. Matthew tells us, that the app will soon support points schemes with no need to carry multiple cards. He also shares the pain points shared around raising cash and would like to see government schemes have less bureaucratic process workflows. The next panel was two key investors, Will Prendergast, Partner with Frontline VC and Faye Walsh Drouillard, Founder and General Partner, WakeUp Capital. Will notes the 20% decline in US capital provision and thinks this loss in investor confidence will trickle into Europe later this year. Will finished with some good advice for entrepreneurs around not taking general advice. Startup entrepreneurs should deeply understand their own circumstances and base their spending decisions on them. He noted options are created around good timing for the individual use case, not the industry average. Faye was very focused on investment in the environment, sustainable food and healthy living. She delivered some practical advice noting the implementation of a startup plan is key to success along with confirmation it has ac...

What's it all about? The electrification of transport continues at pace (literally and metaphorically), and one of the most interesting areas of growth, particularly for those who have to deal with high levels of local and regional road traffic congestion, is electric taxi's. One of the leading pioneers in this sector is Vertical Aerospace. I was able to speak to founder and CEO Stephen Fitzpatrick ahead of his hot footing to New York to ring the bell on their NYSE public Listing on 16th December. We talk disruption, electrification, innovation and of course entrepreneurship. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Stephen Fitzpatrick:  Cleantech entrepreneur Stephen Fitzpatrick founded Vertical Aerospace in 2016, an electric aircraft company which is pioneering electric aviations. The Bristol, UK-based company has partnered with Microsoft, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, GKN and Solvay to build one of the world's most advanced electric VTOLs (vertical take-off and landing). Its VA-X4 aircraft will be capable of speeds of 200mph, a range of over 100miles, near silent when in flight and with zero operating emissions. Vertical has 1,350 conditional pre-orders of its aircraft for $5.4bn from the likes of American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Avolon and Bristow. The VA-X4 will be delivered to its customers, after certification, in 2024. Stephen is also the founder of OVO Energy, the UK's largest independent energy company supplying British homes with 100% renewable energy. OVO hopes to decarbonise 5m British homes by 2030. About Vertical Aerospace: Vertical Aerospace is pioneering electric aviation. Over the past five years, Vertical has focused on building the most experienced and senior team in the eVTOL industry, who have over 1,700 combined years of engineering experience, and have certified and supported over 30 different civil and military aircraft and propulsion systems. Vertical's unrivalled top-tier partner ecosystem is expected to de-risk operational execution and its pathway to certification, allow for a lean cost structure and enable production at scale. Vertical has received conditional pre-orders for a total of up to 1,350 aircraft from American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow and Iberojet, which includes pre-order options from Virgin Atlantic and Marubeni, and in doing so, is creating multiple potential near term and actionable routes to market. In June 2021, Vertical Aerospace announced a SPAC merger with Broadstone Acquisition Corp (NYSE: BSN).
