I know that a discussion about a discussion can be kind of meta, but the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan put together a very interesting series of conversations across the region about youth. "On The Table" is a project bringing 400 conversations together, over meals, across the seven county Detroit area. We attended three of them. Shianne at Noble Elementary/Middle, Jer at Bamboo Detroit, and Sven at the Detroit Boxing Gym. So we initially were going to do a short roundup with some of the Daily team - Jer, Shianne and Sven - but it turned into a half-hour wide-ranging discussion of issues facing the city and youth, and some of the real challenges that are out there. Apologies since is longer than our usual episode, but we hope you enjoy it.

Listen in to some of the secrets of the success including the special nature of the diversity in members and programming. http://bonfiresofsocialenterprise.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Bamboo-Detroit-instagram.jpg () Full Transcript Read Full Transcript Romy: Thanks for joining me for another episode of the Bonfires of Social Enterprise! This is Romy and I want to thank you for your loyalty and following. It keeps us all going around here! This time, we follow up with Amanda Lewan of Bamboo Detroit. Bamboo is a co-working space that has some very special characteristics… it is very diversified and full of energy. Not to mention that it is one of the ‘hippest' places in town. Is that even a word? ‘Hippest?' Oh well, you know what I mean. People want to be there! We did an interview with Amanda back in Season 1. She is one of the owners and visionaries of this space. We will catch up with her in just a moment because we are going to hear from Hudson Robertson of Traverse City, Michigan on the fun fuel… Hudson: My name is Hudson Robertson and I am bringing the Fun Fuel for this episode. This information comes from an article published in the online magazine PhatRice.com on September 18th of 2014. The article is called “7 Crazy-Interesting Facts about Bamboo” 1. Bamboo is anti-bacterial - bamboo has natural pest-fighting powers, thanks to the plant's unique resistance to bacteria and fungi. 2. Panda's Did not always eat it like you see in pictures. - At some point, pandas came to love the taste of bamboo and hate hunting, giving us the peaceful and herbivorous, bamboo-munching creatures we know today. Here are a few more…. Bamboo tastes delicious, it grows on every continent, and Bamboo is stronger than steel - In compression tests, bamboo comes out stronger than brick, wood, concrete or steel, meaning it can hold more force than any of those materials. Some scientists even theorize that a length of bamboo 10 centimeters across could hold a 11,000-pound elephant -- though that particular experiment has yet to be attempted. I hope you enjoyed this Fun Fuel. This is Hudson Robertson. Enjoy the show! Romy: Thanks so much Hudson. I might have to go find some Bamboo to try in a salad. I hadn't thought about that before! Ha ha Okay, let's turn our attention to Amanda Lewan from Bamboo Detroit… Amanda: Yes, we just opened up at our new location, 1420 Washington Boulevard on floor three. The building is called the Julian C. Madison Building, so we're super pumped about it. It's a beautiful building right downtown. It's locally owned by a wonderful family. The building's named after our landlord, Sharon Madison's father, Julian C. Madison. He was a history-making entrepreneur himself. Romy: Oh, he was? Amanda: It's very inspiring to live that sort of similar path with our inclusive entrepreneurial hub here. Romy: Yeah, can we hear a little bit about that story? Amanda: Yeah, so Sharon's father and grandfather were trailblazers. They were the first and third African American engineers in the state of Ohio, and I think his grandfather was one of the very first engineers, African American engineers hired by the federal government. When they bought this building, they named it after her father. One of the things they always described it as he always had a spirit of ... A belief that one should take their life into their own hands, and create with it. I guess he [inaudible 00:02:33] always give back and help raise up the younger generation for their own businesses. It was a really good fit for us seeing a great shared workspace for entrepreneurs and creatives, and fostering and sharing those values of inclusion and diversity. We're super pumped. I think it's really good to partner with people who share your...

Another week, another great episode full of conversations with guests doing great things in and around the metro Detroit area. This time we were joined by Bamboo Detroit to talk about their co-working space downtown and an impending expansion, Newmind Group to talk about an event in September that they're putting on along with their core offerings, and Andrea from the Pontiac Public School District talking about technology in the world of public schools and her search for advice and help with a hackathon that she wants to pull together to help kids in the area... Like we always do, the first segment covered our upcoming events, local events around the area of note, and the news, items and stories that caught our eyes over the past week. From the lawn mowing robot brought to you by the makes of the Roomba vacuum cleaner to the outstanding story of the troll on Target's facebook page that destroyed people hilariously, the return of the Godfather theme as Bob vented about U-Verse and our new business venture for an extreme snow removal company since you can now buy flamethrowers on the cheap and more, we had a lot of fun topics. Tonight also marked the first time we tried something new - we did the broadcast live through our own IT in the D stream while simulcasting through the Podcast Detroit stream. It worked out really well, and so now there are more ways to listen live. In segment two, we talked with Andrea Zellner, a teacher in the Pontiac Public School System that's trying to figure her way around this whole "hackathon" concept in order to help out kids in the area. We talked about tech in the public school systems, what kinds of information are available, and what sort of help she's looking for. If you're interested in helping, touch base with her at alzellner AT gmail DOT com. For segment three, we chatted with the folks from Newmind Group. We covered their company's offerings from a managed services perspective and what they've got going on there, but we mostly chatted about their upcoming Build IT Together event on September 10th. It's a little different than the events we do, in that there will be focused panel discussions during their morning events on a variety of topics as they move forward. Check out Newmind Group at http://newmindgroup.com/ and the Build IT Together events at http://buildittogether.co/ Our fourth segment involved our old friends and repeat guests from Bamboo Detroit. They're awfully busy these days, as they're preparing for a major expansion to a new location that will allow them to start offering a wide variety of new services like private offices and greatly increase their membership capacity. Check them out and keep up to date with all of the goings on at http://bamboodetroit.com/ [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/220037240" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] Again, the links for tonight's guests are: To chat about helping with the Pontiac Schools, hit alzellner AT gmail DOT com. http://bonfiresofsocialenterprise.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/BambooDetroit.jpeg ()Exploring a Collaborative Workspace In Downtown Detroit The Bonfires of Social Enterprise visits with Bamboo Detroit,a business incubator site in a historic Detroit building. Romy talks about why this place has a more “homey” feel to it than other businesses like it, with Bamboo Detroit’s “Community Lady’ Amanda Lewan. Despite it’s name, Detroit Bamboo isn’t an exotic Asian restaurant. It’s a L3C company, located at 1442 Brush St, Suite 200, in downtown Detroit near the corner of Gratiot and Brush. http://bamboodetroit.com/ (On the web Bamboo Detroit lives here.) According to the http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/small/Bo-Co/Business-Incubators.html (online sources) there are many benefits to working in a business incubator, which started becoming prevalent in some areas of the country in the 1970s and 1980s. These benefits include sharing basic operating costs; administrative assitance; and least but not last, comradship amongst your fellows who work in the same space. Romy Gingras finds out why Bamboo Detroit was born, and what inspired it to be open 24 hours/7 days a week. The interview also explores why this work cooperative offers open workspaces and other amenities, and the types of small businesses that are attracted to work space. In addition Romy and Amanda talk about the types of events that Bamboo organizes and what is behind the scheduleing of these events. IT in the D, Episode 64. Also known as "Dave completely nerds out beyond all ability to recover". Why? Because we had Jack Olson in-studio with us, that's why. And if you don't know why that triggered a major nerding out, then you might as well just completely avoid segments two and thre of this one because it's all nerd, all the time. We also ran long, with a full fifth segment as we talked with Amanda Lewan and Ebrahim Varachia. Amanda's been on our show a couple of times in the past, talking about her work with Michipreneur.com and Bamboo Detroit. Ebrahim is the Co-Founder and Director of Operations for Patronicity.com... Our first segment was all about news and events. From the Honey Boo Boo / TLC debacle to schools not teaching the critical thinking skills that employers are looking for, we had some good discussions. As always, links for the various topics we covered (and those we didn't get to due to time constraints) are down below. So check those out to see what we found interesting this week. And then...then The Geekening happened. Jack Olson is the man behind the software that many of us use every day. IMS. DB2. UDB. Operating systems. Databases. His bio and background are here if you're interested: Jack Olson Bio Background And so we went on a deep dive. From the history of databases to the evolution of business intelligence, data profiling, security and archiving...such a wide, cool variety of topics. And then in segment three, we got into what he's working on these days, and it got even more awesome. What are the biggest problems that face companies dealing with big data? Data security. Encryption. Safety of the data. Corporate policies around access and use. Well, he's gone and build something that addresses all of those issues and more...oh, and also managed to utilize compression to get some awesome performance gains along the way. Got your attention? Good. Go check it out at http://www.3lgtechsolutions.com/solutions.html In our fourth and fifth segments, we dove in with Amanda Lewan discussing her recent article about funding sources for companies here in Michigan, which you can read out at http://www.michipreneur.com/michigan-funding-resources/ Amanda's a repeat guest with us, and we're always happy to talk with her about the work she's doing at Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit. Amanda Lewan is Co-founder of the creative work space Bamboo Detroit and Editor of Michipreneur, and online community for Michigan creatives and entrepreneurs. She's passionate about building a more creative economy in Michigan. Her work has been featured in local and national publications, including Entrepreneur, The Nation, and Crain's Business. Follow the conversation online at Michipreneur.com. One of those funding sources is Patronicity.com, a localized version of something like Kickstarter, but also with the bonus of working with MEDC and providing matching grants. What does that mean? So let's say your project requires $20,000. Launch a project on Patronicity, get it rolling, and you raise $10,000 from the community and you'll get the remaining $10,000 from a matching grant. Ebrahim Varachia is the co-founder and Director of Operations for Patronicity, and he had a lot of great insight into not only his own site and company, but also other options as well. Check out https://patronicity.com/ and see if they're right for you. IT in the D, Episode 49. Or "Season 2, Episode 5" because no, we haven't let that go yet. We talked a lot about Detroit this episode. A lot. We also had some issues with the board running things, so the sound's a little twitchy at times, but we've cleaned it up as solidly as we can. Businesses in Detroit. Launching things in Detroit. Space planning in Detroit. Good things in Detroit. Bad things in Detroit. People inside Detroit. People outside of Detroit. All kinds of topics throughout the show with our guests from Hatch Detroit, Bamboo Detroit and Daily Detroit... As always, our opening segment talked some news, some local events, some random stuff that caught our eye, and waded through the introductions for the evening. This was one of those episodes where we kind of went all over the map, so if you're looking for a specific segment to listen to in order to catch something...sorry, you're just going to have to listen to it all to get the full impact of this one. Our second segment started diving in with Vittoria from Hatch Detroit. She's a return guest, and we did things a little smarter this year. Instead of waiting for them to be down to their four finalists, we thought it'd be a good idea to help get the word out before the doors closed on your opportunity to get $50,000 in funding, legal advice and marketing help on that business you want to open downtown. They also work with neighborhoods and existing businesses, so there's a ton of great information in here. [soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/158056690" params="color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] And then...somewhere in there...we started talking about Detroit in general. The neighborhoods. Zoning issues. What should and shouldn't be done with the area by the river. Were the casinos a great idea or a horrible idea? Can businesses inside Detroit successfully migrate to the suburbs...and vice versa? What's a pop-up? Why do they happen? Why are there always so many damned bicycles downtown these days? So no, we didn't really stick too well to "segment" format or even what one would call "focused"...but it was a great show full of awesome topics of conversation with some really sharp, passionate people. Expect that to happen on a regular basis. - You can find us at http://www.ITintheD.com, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ITinTheD, on Meetup at http://www.meetup.com/ITintheD/, and on Twitter at https://twitter.com/itinthed - All of the information you need to find out and sign up for Hatch Detroit can be found at http://hatchdetroit.com/ - Bamboo Detroit is a great co-working space downtown that you should absolutely keep an eye on to see what they've got going on: http://bamboodetroit.com/ - Daily Detroit, as always, can be found at http://www.dailydetroit.com/. Their "burgers you have to try" list we were discussing is at http://www.dailydetroit.com/2014/06/29/5-tasty-burgers-to-love-around-detroit/
IT in The D, Episode 33. I'm pretty sure that my favorite part of tonight's episode was when Bob had the stunning realization that tonight was the 10th... ...which means next Monday is the 17th... ...which means we're in the studio on St Patrick's Day. He didn't seem amused. However, that didn't get in the way of us having one hell of a time tonight with Steve from Arrow Strategies, one of our sponsors for Thursday's Pink Slip Party event at St Andrews Hall, along with David, Bryan and Amanda - the good folks from Bamboo Detroit, and we finally talked the (in)famous Doctor J from Hell Yeah Detroit into hopping on the mic with us for a while...
Could not possibly have asked for a better group to have in-studio with us last night. Hatch Detroit and their four finalists. Michipreneur. Bamboo Detroit. Beacon Hill Staffing. Great show, awesome conversations, and very cool to hear about some things going on around the city... In our opening segment, we kick things off with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit, Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and Steven Urenda of Beacon Hill Staffing. Hatch Detroit is running a contest for entrepreneurs in the area, with the winner getting $50,000 to open up a storefront in Detroit. The final four contestants join us in-studio during our second and third segments, because the public gets to vote on who that winner will be. But to start off, Vittoria tells us a little bit about the background of the contest, how people got involved, the process of narrowing down the entries and how they got down to this final four. Michipreneur is a great online resource for entrepreneurs and business types here in the southeast Michigan area, and Bamboo Detroit is a new coworking space open downtown where you can grab a desk and other office amenities. In our second segment, we keep Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur with us, and we bring in the first pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize - Batch Brewing Company and HenriettaHaus Coffee Roasters. In our third segment, we still have with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan with us, and we bring in the other pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize. Corktown Cinema and Spielhaus Toys. In our final segment, we wrapped up a bit with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit talking about the voting process to see which of the four finalists will walk away with the $50,000 prize, chatted with Amanda Lewan about both Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and finally managed to sneak Steve Urenda from Beacon Hill Staffing back into the conversation. About Hatch Detroit: http://www.HatchDetroit.com Founded in 2011 by Ted Balowski and Nick Gorga-two passionate lovers of Detroit- Hatch Detroit was created to give others the opportunity to have a role in the redevelopment of Detroit. The Contest was built on an idea called “Crowd Entrepreneurship” where average citizens have a role in voting for the type of retail they want in their community, and determining the winner of the Hatch Contest. Since 2011, two winners have been announced, and several semi-finalists are in the process of opening. Now in its third year, Hatch Detroit has expanded its retail role into six neighborhoods in Detroit as part of the Detroit Lion's Living for the City Initiative. Hatch Detroit will be partnering with local Community Development Corporations (CDC's) to determine an area of focus that works within the community's masterplan for its retail strip. Examples include improvements in signage, interior lighting, window displays, and outdoor beautification projects all geared to improving retail. About Michipreneur: http://www.michipreneur.com Michigan innovation has a rich and interesting history in our great state. We're here to help publish news and resources aimed to continue to foster Michigan innovation. Michipreneur is an online publication built to empower entrepreneurs, encourage investment, strengthen small business, and foster talent retention in Michigan. We publish news, resources, events, funding information and more for Michigan startups and businesses. About Bamboo Detroit: http://www.bamboodetroit.com We're a members-only co-working space comprised of talented entrepreneurs growing their businesses right in the heart of Downtown Detroit.
