This week on the SALTovation podcast, Katherine Loughead, Senior Policy Analyst at the Tax Foundation, discusses the importance of sound tax policy and how the Tax Foundation is conducting tax policy research to inform policy deliberations at the state, federal, and international levels. She talks about the impact of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and the Wayfair decision on state tax policy. Katherine also emphasizes the need for states to adjust to the new normal, including the rise of remote work and the need to attract businesses and taxpayers. Topics discussed in this episode:The role of the Tax FoundationTrends in tax policy over the past five yearsStates' unexpected revenue surplus post-pandemicHow income tax complexity makes it hard to predict liabilitiesChallenges of property assessments and the public perception of taxesHelping the public understand tax systems Quotables:"The Tax Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501 tax policy research organization and we've actually been around for over 85 years now and we work to advance sound tax policy at the state, federal, and international levels.” -Katherine Loughead [00:50]"Switching from federal to state has been interesting because so much happens every single year at the state level. So there are many ways you can help move the needle in the right direction. Instead of being a very small part of a big wheel, you're able to be one of a few players that are really having an impact, and that's been highly rewarding.” -Katherine Loughead [05:35]"We've had, of course, the pandemic and all of the state responses to that, everything that's happened at the federal level since then with federal aid and then now coming out of the pandemic, we've seen states have a lot more revenue on hand than they initially expected.” -Katherine Loughead [12:13]“People remember exactly what they paid in property taxes in a certain year, but don't add up all their receipts or have a strong sense of how much they're paying in sales taxes. It's a little bit here and a little bit there, but over time that adds up quite a bit. We're talking about what we often call in the neurodivergent space, long runways, for our emerging young adults, specifically alternative paths for differently wired students who are graduating high school but may not either be ready for a “typical” college experience or for whom college isn't part of the plan.We do get a little update from Dave on the admissions landscape, but most of the this episode is dedicated to considering other options for students, including gap years, apprenticeships, taking a few classes at a community college, and most importantly, slowing the whole “launching” process down to support kids who would really benefit from extra time to develop and grow, recover from mental health challenges, destress, and more. About my guest:David L Marcus is a college admissions coach who loves helping students and parents find balance and joy. He has been a journalist, author and teacher – as well as a writing coach for CEOs.David wrote a book about college admissions, Acceptance (published by Penguin Books). He also wrote a book about struggling teens, What It Takes to Pull Me Through (published by Houghton Mifflin). He has appeared on the Today show and NPR's Morning Edition; he has spoken about education at conferences, schools, churches, and synagogues across the U.S. David is an honors graduate of Brown University. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard. But he says classes at a community college changed his life.Things you'll learn:What has changed for students who are college bound now that we are through the pandemicHow the decision-making and admission process has changed for students and for collegesWhy gap years can be such a good option for some students and the different ways a gap year might lookWhy community college might be a good starting point for neurodivergent kidsOther options for kids who don't want to take the college route after high schoolAdvice for parents with kids close to the end of high school on how to support them after they graduateResources:David Marcus' websiteAcceptance: A Legendary Guidance Counselor Helps Seven Kids Find the Right Colleges–and Find Themselves by David MarcusWhat It Takes To Pull Me Through: Four Troubled Teenagers And Fourteen Months That Transformed Them by David MarcusCollege Vetting, Admissions, & Accommodations for Differently Wired Students (Tilt Parenting Podcast)Seven Steps to College Success: A Pathway for Students with Disabilities by Elizabeth HambletGap Year AssociationCollege Autism SpectrumSupport the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram

The world of work has experienced some pretty seismic changes in the past couple of years, leading up to three interrelated trends: the great resignation, the rise of solopreneurship, and quiet quitting. Productivity and employee engagement are down, way down and companies of all sizes can't fill open positions or get the best out of the employees they have now. I first heard about quiet quitting on TikTok, and it really made me think about my own work history, and the challenges being faced by the five different generations that currently make up the workforce. If you are not familiar with the term, quiet quitting refers to doing only what is necessary at work, something my generation called “coasting.” A quiet quitter is not necessarily on their way out the door, but they are maintaining firm boundaries around their work hours and effort in order to maintain a better work-life balance. No after-hours checking of emails, no attending the company picnic, and no “going above and beyond” to gain favor from the higher-ups. What I find interesting in quiet quitting is the intention, not the behavior, because it can very easily be misconstrued. So is quiet quitting passive-aggressive, a precursor or sign of burnout, or an exit strategy, and what can we as solopreneurs learn from it? Highlights of this episode:Changes in the work culture due to the pandemicHow different generations view and respond to work expectations Quiet quitting and hustle cultureCorporate culture, outliers, and superstars The what, when, and why of quiet quitting for solopreneursMentioned in this episode:“The Cure for Imposter Syndrome” https://bit.ly/3AnPBWeKim Kardashian clip https://bit.ly/3Cw1rjfThe Real Cost of Hustle Culture: https://bit.ly/3Cw3nbvEven if you aren't a quiet quitter, you may have habits in your business that cost you income, profit, and success.
