The jazz world lost Chick Corea this February and we bastards miss him like everyone else.  Well, maybe not like fans of electric-era Return to Forever, but we certainly miss him.  In this episode, we focus on some of Chick's acoustic music, looking at some early works that show both his melodic and avant-garde sides, and his tribute to a predecessor with a considerably less sunny personality than Chick himself.  Pop matters delves into strange tributaries as Mike works his way through his mother's cd collection.  Stay tuned to the end for Mike's tribute to a parent lost to cancer.  Chick Corea – DUET; ARC; NOW HE SINGS, NOW HE SOBS; REMEMBERING BUD POWELL.

The statuture of an artist can be measured not only through the albums s/he has recorded but also by the caliber of the musicians he has played with. There are not many who can claim to have collaborated with such a remarkable and diverse range of musicians like Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Lee Konitz, Gianluigi Trovesi, Franco D'Andrea, Henri Texier, Aldo Romano, Marc Ducret, and Gato Barbieri, to name just a few. During the first part of the show we focus on his work in Europe. Episode 16 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with legendary jazz bassist Dave Holland, whose latest album, Uncharted Territories, is out now. Dave Holland has been a respected and admired figure on the international jazz scene since he began playing in London in 1967. He was recruited to join Miles Davis's band in 1968, and stayed with him until 1970, playing on Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, and Bitches Brew. When he left, he formed Circle with Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul. Holland played extensively with Braxton and Sam Rivers during the early 1970s, and recorded the album Conference of the Birds, a crucial avant-garde document, in 1973 for the ECM label. He later formed the Gateway trio with guitarist John Abercrombie and drummer Jack DeJohnette; led two different quintets, in the 1980s and 1990s/2000s; expanded the latter group to an octet and a big band; and much more. Uncharted Territories features saxophonist Evan Parker, with whom Holland first played in 1968, in the Spontaneous Music Ensemble; keyboardist Craig Taborn; and percussionist Ches Smith. In this interview, he discusses old and new projects, his approach to improvisation, running his own Dare2 label, and much more.

Dave Holland is to this day one of the premier bassists and composers of Jazz. This iconic album was made after Holland emigrated to America and had just finished a long tenure with Miles Davis. From Davis he became part of a short-lived band led by pianist Chick Corea. It was called "Circle" and had Corea, multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton, Holland and drummer Barry Altschul, Corea soon broke up the band to form the Latin flavoured band "Return to Forever" however Holland had formed a musical bond with Braxton and Altschul. Sam Rivers on tenor/soprano saxophones and bass clarinet was chosen to work with the other three and this iconic recording was born. It was called "Conference of the Birds" and that composition along with 5 others made up the recording done in New York on November 30,1972. All the compositions are by Holland and reflect a more edgy sound and skirts the edges of the "avant-guard". This is one of the finest recordings of Holland's long career and stands as a milestone. Jon was also named 2012 Musician of the Year in The New York City Jazz Record. An integral member of such high-profile ensembles as Mostly Other People Do The Killing and the Mary Halvorson Quintet, as well as an established bandleader in his own right, his list of current projects includes the bands Bryan & The Haggards and Mike Pride’s From Bacteria to Boys as well as a longstanding partnership with legendary drummer Barry Altschul and Dave Douglas’ new quintet. // Irabagon also has his own record label, Irrabagast Records and we talk a little bit about what it is like to put out his own albums and run that side of the business in addition to his work as a performer. Jon also talks about how he got started on the saxophone, some of the things he practices on a regular basis, and what going to school in New York did for his career. It's easy to see and hear why Jon Irabagon is one of the most in demand saxophonists in the world right now. Enjoy our conversation and check out Jon's music today!
