Cyndi Lauper is a multi-award winning singer and songwriter. She has sold more than fifty million records, won an Emmy for acting and her musical Kinky Boots earned her a Tony and an Oliver award. Born in 1953, Cyndi grew up in a blue collar neighbourhood in New York. Her mother loved music and art and took her children to free exhibitions in New York which inspired Cyndi. As a very young girl, Cyndi listened to her mother's extensive record collection and mimicked the voices she heard from musicals and operas. After a difficult family home life due to her mother's turbulent marriages, Cyndi found solace in music and began writing songs when she was ten. She left home at seventeen determined to make it in the music industry. She started out as a singer in bands, whilst supporting herself doing a series of jobs. Early in her career, she lost her voice for almost a year after trying to make herself heard over amps which were too loud. Success eventually came when she released her debut solo album She's So Unusual in 1983 – the first album by a female artist to spawn four consecutive US Top 5 singles.Cyndi lives in New York with her husband, David who is an actor. SynopsisComposers have always been fascinated by the sea. If you're curious, Spotify offers a playlist of 50 sea-inspired classical works from composers ranging from Mendelssohn to Debussy to Takemitsu. On today's date in 2012, conductor Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony premiered a new sea-inspired work by London-born composer Anna Clyne, who was then the orchestra's composer-in-residence. Clyne's piece, Night Ferry, was "music of voyages, from stormy darkness to enchanted worlds,” as she described. “It is music of the conjurer and setter of tides, the guide through the ungovernable and dangerous.”The Chicago Symphony took Night Ferry on tour that year, with Pacific Coast stops in San Francisco and San Diego, and also, perhaps for thematic contrast, to Palm Desert, California, for good measure.Clyne is bit of a traveler herself. She studied music formally at the University of Edinburgh, then at the Manhattan School of Music. In addition to being the composer-in-residence in Chicago, she has held similar positions with Orchestre National d'Île-de-France, the Baltimore Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony and, coming full circle, the Edinburgh-based Scottish Chamber Orchestra.Music Played in Today's ProgramAnna Clyne (b. 1980): Night Ferry; Chicago Symphony; Richardo Muti, cond. In this episode, I sit down with Steve Lehman, visionary alto saxophonist and composer, to discuss his project "Ex Machina," a collaboration with the grammy-nominated Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ). We talk in detail about his approach to composing and how the process varies according to the size of the group he's composing for—big bands versus quartets—and how he writes for other musicians so that they can shine while leaving space for his own solos. We compare classical to jazz and their differing approaches to improvisation, as well as improv in general, exemplified in his latest work, an interweaving of forms and patterns. Last but not least, we discuss his musical influences, including trombonist George Lewis and alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, with whom he studied for several years."Ex Machina" releases September 15, 2023MUSICIANS-Steve Lehman - alto saxophone, electronicsJonathan Finlayson - trumpetChris Dingman - vibraphoneMembers of Orchestre National de JazzFrédéric Maurin - direction, electronicsFanny Ménégoz - flute, alto flute, piccoloCatherine Delaunay - clarinet, basset hornJulien Soro - tenor saxophone, clarinetFabien Debellefontaine - baritone saxophone, clarinet, fluteFabien Norbert - trumpet, flugelhornDaniel Zimmermann - tromboneChristiane Bopp - tromboneFanny Meteier - tubaBruno Ruder - piano, synthesizerStéphan Caracci - vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, percussion, synthesizerRafaël Koerner - drumsSarah Murcia - double bassJérôme Nika - generative electronics creation & artistic collaborationDionysios Papanikolaou - IRCAM electronicshttps://www.stevelehman.com/

Synopsis On this day in 1952, thirty-one theaters nationwide offered the first pay-per view Met opera telecast. This was a regularly-scheduled performance of Bizet's Carmen broadcast live from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, featuring Risë Stevens in the title role and Fritz Reiner conducting. The performance was relayed to the theaters by means of a closed TV circuit.* Beginning in 1948, the Metropolitan Opera had experimented with live telecasts of their opening night performances, but relatively few people in the U.S. owned TV sets at the time. By 1952, most American households had TVs, but the Met's manager, Rudolf Bing, was dead-set against any further FREE telecasts. The 1952 pay-per-view experiment was not successful, and it wasn't until 1976—after Bing had resigned—that live telecasts of Metropolitan Opera performances resumed on public television. The most successful of all commercial telecasts of a live opera performance occurred in 1951, when, on Christmas Eve that year, NBC-TV broadcast Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian-Carlo Menotti on Christmas. NBC's black and white kinescope recording of that premiere performance was broadcast annually for a number of years—until it was accidentally erased by a network employee.** Although Amahl is no longer an annual visitor to television, it is still staged this time of year by amateur and professional opera companies around the world. *Currently the Metropolitan Opera offers a series of live opera performances transmitted in high-definition video via satellite from Lincoln Center in New York City to select venues, primarily movie theaters, in the United States and other parts of the world. The first transmission was of a condensed English-language version of Mozart's The Magic Flute on December 30, 2006. **One surviving copy of the original kinescope did surface in a California archive, and was shown at broadcast museums on both coasts in 2001 to celebrate the work's 50th anniversary. Please go check out their show, and their episode featuring us! -- Emerging onto the international stage, Kensho Watanabe is fast becoming one of the most exciting and versatile young conductors to come out of the United States. Recently recognized as a recipient of a Career Assistance Award by the Solti Foundation U.S, Kensho will make his Metropolitan Opera debut next season, conducting Kevin Puts' The Hours. Assistant Conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra from 2016 to 2019, Kensho made his critically acclaimed subscription debut with the Orchestra and pianist, Daniil Trifonov, taking over from his mentor Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He would continue on to conduct four subscription concerts with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 2019, in addition to debuts at the Bravo! Vail Festival and numerous concerts at the Mann and Saratoga Performing Arts Centres. Recent highlights include Kensho's debuts with the London Philharmonic and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Rhode Island Philharmonic as well as his Finnish debut with the Jyväskylä Sinfonia. Kensho has also enjoyed collaborations with the Houston Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Brussels Philharmonic and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival, and the Orchestre Metropolitain in Montreal. Equally at home in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, Watanabe has led numerous operas with the Curtis Opera Theatre, most recently Puccini's La rondine in 2017 and La bohème in 2015. Additionally, he served as assistant conductor to Yannick Nézet-Séguin on a new production of Strauss' Elektra at Montréal Opera. This season, Watanabe will conduct Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro at the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy. Watanabe has previously been the inaugural conducting fellow of the Curtis Institute of Music from 2013 to 2015, under the mentorship of Nézet-Séguin. An accomplished violinist, Watanabe received his master of music degree from the Yale School of Music and served as a substitute violinist in The Philadelphia Orchestra from 2012 to 2016. -- We're super excited to announce that we're piloting a database of opportunities for creatives like you! Hello and welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast where classical musicians share the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life when the concert halls shut their doors and the audiences vanished. In this episode I'm chatting to Christopher Nery, principal bass trombonist with the RTE Concert Orchestra since 2009. He shares bitter memories of the anxiety caused by uncertainty, burnout, cabin fever and misinformation. His sweet memories are of the simple things, like weekly pizza parties with his children, trips to the recycling and the joy of DIY projects in his home. His bittersweet is of the home-schooling experience. Chris has worked with ensembles across Europe including Orchestre National de Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orquestra Nacional de Barcelona y Catalunya, Opera North, BBC Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra. In the USA he has performed with River City Brass, Pittsburgh Symphony and Sarasota Orchestra amongst others. From 2003-2015 he was Professor of Low Brass at the Conservatoire Perpignan Méditerranée in Perpignan, France and currently teaches bass trombone and euphonium at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. He is a Buffet Groupe artist playing Courtois trombones and Besson euphoniums and has appeared as guest clinician/adjudicator at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon, the Cork Institute of Technology School of Music, and most recently at the University of Miami, Florida.
