Don Grolnick gehört zu den Musikern, die vor allem von ihresgleichen geschätzt werden. Zwar gehörte er zu den kreativsten Köpfen der Studioszene New Yorks in den 80er und 90er Jahren, dann aber rannte ihm die Zeit davon: Mit 48 Jahren schon erlag er einem Krebsleiden. In der kurzen Zeit, die ihm auf diesem Planeten vergönnt war, war er allerdings für Grosserfolge mitverantwortlich. Für das Debut-Album des Saxophonstars Michael Brecker zum Beispiel, zu dem er den Up-Tempo-Knaller «Nothing Personal» beisteuerte. Für das zweite Album der so kurzlebigen wie erfolgreichen Band «Dreams», wo er mitschrieb und an den Tasten sass. Für andere typische 70er-Jahre-Fusion-Bands wie «Steps» oder die «Brecker Bros.», wo er ebenfalls Keyboarder, Komponist und Arrangeur war. Was Don Grolnick auszeichnet als Komponisten, Pianisten und Produzenten, und warum er mehr Beachtung verdient hätte, das weiss die Pianistin Julia Hülsmann.
