coming Oct 31st The Celts worshiped the sun god Belenus, especially cially on Beltane, May 1, and they worshiped another god, apparently the lord of death, or the lord of the dead, on Samhain (pronounced "SOW-wen" by Wiccans), cans), October 31. Beltane ("Fire of Bel") was the time of the summer festival, while Samhain was the time of the winter festival. Human sacrifice was offered during both occasions. According to Julius Caesar in his Commentaries mentaries and other sources,6 the Celts believed they were descended from the god Dis, a tradition handed down from the Druids. Dis was the Roman name for the god of the dead. Of the 400 names of Celtic gods known, Belenus is mentioned most often. Samhain as the specific name of the lord of death is uncertain, but it is possible that the lord of death was the chief Druid deity. We'll follow the common practice of other authors on this issue and refer to this deity by the name Samhain. Druidic festivals The Celts and their Druid priests began their New Year on November 1, which marked the beginning of winter. They apparently believed that on October 31, the night before their New Year and the last day of the old year, Samhain gathered the souls of the evil dead who had been condemned to enter the bodies of animals. mals. He then decided what animal form they would take for the next year. (The souls of the good dead were reincarnated as humans.) The Druids also believed that the punishment of the evil dead could be lightened by sacrifices, prayers, and gifts to Samhain. Druid worshipers attempted to satisfy and please this deity because of his power over the souls of the dead, whether these souls were good or evil. For those who had died during the preceding 12 months, Samhain allowed their spirits to return to earth to their former places of habitation for a few hours to associate once again with their families.? As a result of this belief, the Celts taught that on their New Year's Eve (our Halloween) ghosts, evil spirits, and witches roamed the earth. In order to honor the sun god (Belenus) and to frighten away evil spirits who allegedly feared fire, large bonfires were lit on hilltops. In Lewis Spence's The History and Origins of Druidism we read, The outstanding feature of Samhain was the burning of a great fire....Samhain was also a festival of the dead, whose spirits at this season were thought of as scouring the countryside, causing dread to the folk at large. To expel them from the fields and the precincts of villages, lighted brands from the bonfire were carried around the district ... Divinations for the fate of the individual throughout the new year were engaged in.8 For several days before New Year's Eve (October 31), young boys would travel the neighborhood begging for material to build these massive bonfires. The fires were believed to not only banish evil spirits but rejuvenate the sun. Until fairly recent times, the hilltop Halloween fires of the Scots were called Samhnagan, indicating the lingering influence of the ancient Celtic festival.9 On this night, evil or frustrated ghosts were also believed to play tricks on humans and cause supernatural ural manifestations, just like poltergeists today. As part of the celebration, people dressed in grotesque masks and danced around the great bonfires, often pretending they were being pursued by evil spirits. In addition, food was put out to make the ghosts or souls of the good dead Samhain had released feel welcomed and at home. Because Samhain marked the beginning of a new year, an interest in divination (the magic art of interpreting the unknown by interpreting random patterns or symbols) bols) and fortune-telling became an important part of this holiday. For example, the Druids believed that the particular shape of various fruits and vegetables could help predict, dict, or divine, the future. Victims of human sacrifice were used for the same purpose. When the Romans conquered quered Britain, some of their customs were added to the traditions of the Druids, while others, such as human sacrifice, were banned. The Samhain celebration was not unique to the Druids. Many festivals worldwide celebrate a time when the dead return to mingle with the living. The Hindus call it a night of Holi. John Ankerberg. SUMMARY As the party approaches Port Norsal, after their now 6-day journey, the crew of the ship gets to do a bit of whale watching as Tempest spots a pod of orcas approaching from the distance. After hearing they are nearing their destination, Rem tries to get himself thrown off the boat. Meanwhile, Kenina trades some cooking techniques with Miri, offering to give her some spices and teach her how to use them, while being taught how to work with seafood. During their last night on the boat, Rem has yet another nightmare. He sees himself back at the outpost he used to run, with all of his companions, including Nyxi, Kenina, Ariel, and Karemn. All of them, slain by the bandits who overtook the outpost. He jolts awake as their leader thrusts a longsword through his chest and tells him “Olsyr is mine, old man.” While he takes some time on deck to calm down, he and Tempest have a peaceful conversation about the journey behind and going forward. As the group wakes up, on the 20th of Belenus, they all gather up their gear and get ready to make port. Kenina says her goodbyes to the dwarf who had been helping her and Rem fish and tries to learn a little bit more about the group’s current quest. She is joined by Ariel to go and try to convince Tempest to come along with them on their journey, where Ariel and Tempest learn that they actually grew up in the same monastery together. The Whispering Winds finally reaches Port Norsal, and the party leaves the ship, being four members strong, once again. Fionn mac Cumhaill transcribed in English as Finn McCool or Finn MacCoul, was a mythical hunter-warrior of Irish mythology, occurring also in the mythologies of Scotland and the Isle of Man. The stories of Fionn and his followers the Fianna, form the Fenian Cycle (or Fiannaidheacht), much of it purported to be narrated by Fionn's son, the poet Oisín. "Fionn" is actually a nickname meaning "blond", "fair", "white", or "bright". His childhood name was Deimne literally "sureness" or "certainty", and several legends tell how he gained the nickname when his hair turned prematurely white. The name "Fionn" is related to the Welsh name "Gwyn", as in the mythological figure Gwyn ap Nudd, and to the continental Celtic "Vindos", an epithet for the god Belenus. The 19th-century Irish revolutionary organisation known as the Fenian Brotherhood took its name from these legends. Source: Wikipedia

Gary & Ruthie x x x News & Views We talk about Stonehenge's new visitor centre and the Cerne Abbas giant's new haircut! The Shadow House of Lugh by Ethna Carberry This poem is a translation of an 8th Century Irish verse. It was translated by Ethna Carberry and published in Padraic Colum's (1881–1972) Anthology of Irish Verse, 1922. Lugh is the Celtic divinity whose name is most widely known. In mythology he is the Sun God. In the mythological cycle he is the deliverer of the De Danaans from the Fomorian oppression. He is the slayer of Balor, the glance of whose eye is death. But Lugh is also kin to Balor, his mother being Eithlinn, the daughter whom Balor had immured like Danae in a tower. There are actually another two verses to this poem, but the version we found and recorded didn't have them. So here are the extra two verses for your pleasure. This version can be found at Bartleby's. He plays for her soothing the Slumber-song: Fine and faint as any dream it glides along: She sleeps until the magic of his kiss shall rouse; And all her world is quiet in the Shadow-house. His days glide to night, and his nights glide to day: With circling of the amber mead, and feasting gay; In the yellow of her hair his dreams lie curled, And her arms make the rim of his rainbow world. The Fires of Belenus by William Russeth A thousand years before the Romans, Celtic people cultivated the Rhone Valley. Celtic languages were spoken from Asia Minor to Spain and from Northern Italy to Ireland. By the third century BC, their culture had evolved into a complex civilization with sophisticated social structures, laws, and folklore that are the roots of modern European culture. But the Celtic world was a violent world, controlled by mystical Druids and warrior chieftains, ready to take the heads of their rivals over the most trifling insult. Fires of Belenus is a romantic tale, that tantalizes readers with rational portrayals of mythical events found in the CuChulainn and Arthurian legends. Written by William Russeth, the chapter we read is exciting and contains wonderful symbology. Many, many thanks to William for allowing us to present Chapter Thirty-Six. The Sword in the Stone, Lady of Lake, and CuChulainn's stand at the river ford are brought to life in plausible new ways that make the work unique. It is a tale of Historical Fantasy, made believable by accurately portraying ancient Celtic culture. Available from Wings Press and Amazon. Find out more about William in our Contributor pages. Tuttle Caislean an Oir by Cady Finlayson Called “one of America’s top Celtic fiddlers” by New Age Voice magazine and “bursting with pure and natural talent” by HotIndieNews.com, Cady Finlayson offers a spirited fiddle show with a global twist. Cady’s music blends traditional Irish tunes with worldbeat rhythms and American folk, creating a signature sound that appeals to a variety of audiences. “I love to bring Irish music to people who might not normally hear it,” she says. "I was in Limerick, Ireland in 2003, where I had the chance to meet some of the great Irish fiddle players. What impressed me the most was how individual each person's style was, and how "tradition" meant different things to different people."
