Coach Chelsea speaks wih Coach Simmons as she takes the helm at the University of Memphis. We speak about her plans, her faith in God, Servant Leadership, and apply those principles to her assignment as Head Coach. Two-time NCAA National Champion and Tennessee native Alex Simmons was named the head coach of the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team on April 6, 2023 and became the 13th head coach in the program's history.    Simmons comes to Memphis after five seasons at the helm of Gardner-Webb where she led the team to a 90-59 record including a 29-5 mark this past season. The Runnin' Bulldogs broke multiple program, school and Big South records with their 29 victories and a 21-game win streak that included a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. GWU captured the regular season and championship titles for the program's first trip to the Big Dance since the 2010-11 season.  Simmons, who was named as the Big South Coach of the Year, saw four of her five starters earn All-Big South honors in 2022-23, while Jhesskya Williams became just the third player in Gardner-Webb history to surpass 2,000 career points, finishing as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 2,049 points.   Simmons' basketball roots run deep to one of the most respected programs in the game. She played collegiately at the University of Tennessee under basketball Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt from 2004-2009, helping the Lady Vols win back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008.   Simmons was a member of three Final Four squads (2005, 2007, 2008) and another Elite Eight team (2006) while serving as a team captain and was also the Lady Vols representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).   During the 2021-22 season, Simmons steered the Dogs to an overall record of 11-13 and 10-7 in the Big South. Under Simmons, Alasia Smith was named the Big South Freshman of the Year after the five-time Freshman of the Week averaged 11.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG and led the conference with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game.   Simmons led the Runnin' Bulldogs to an 18-11 overall record and 13-7 in Big South Conference play in 2019-20, finishing fifth in the league standings. GWU ended the season on a hot streak, winning four-straight games and seven of their last eight matchups before play was halted prior to the Big South tournament.   Under Simmons, Carley Plentovich earned a handful of accolades during the 2019-20 season, including All-Big South honors, as well as a Big South Player of the Week award. She also became the program's 24th 1,000-point scorer, the first under Simmons, and was named to the Big South's All-Academic team.   In her first season in Boiling Springs, Simmons led Gardner-Webb to a 16-15 record and 10-8 Big South mark in 2018-19 with a fifth-place finish. Two players - Plentovich and Williams – would earn All-Big South honors.   Simmons took over the Runnin' Bulldogs in April 2018 after assistant coaching stints at Ole Miss (2013-2018) and Middle Tennessee State (2010-2013). She also served as a graduate assistant coach at Kansas (2009-2010).     Prior to her time at Ole Miss, Simmons served as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State, helping the Blue Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances during her time on the bench. Her work with the team's post players produced an honorable-mention All-America selection and in the 2011-2012 season saw the Blue Raiders grab the most rebounds since 1983.   Also a Street & Smith's All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2001 and 2002, Simmons helped the Golden Eaglettes to Tennessee State Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. She was a three-time All-State selection, four-time All-District choice and was named as the Mid-State Player of the Year in 2003.   She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a degree in exercise science. Happy Friday folks, and welcome back inside the Bandwagon! We hope you've all had a good week to this point. Despite being in the transition from winter to spring sports, we had a busy week in the MAC - there's a lot to get to on this week's show! The boys start out in men's hoops, where Western Michigan named Dwayne Stephens as the new head men's basketball coach. Stephens arrives in Kalamazoo having spent the past 19 seasons just up the road in East Lansing, where he served as an assistant coach at Michigan State. Stephens has been in contention for a number of MAC jobs over the past few years, and he's finally found a home in Kalamazoo. Elsewhere in men's hoops, Ohio G Mark Sears entered the transfer portal, while Toledo F Ryan Rollins and Western Michigan G Lamar Norman, Jr. both declared for the NBA draft. All three players have the option to return to their previous schools, though it certainly seems unlikely that all three will compete in the MAC next season. On the other side of the spectrum, reigning MAC Freshman of the Year Payton Sparks of Ball State removed his name from the transfer portal and will officially be returning to Muncie. This is a huge get for new head coach Michael Lewis, who has a solid young foundation to build on. In women's hoops, Buffalo named Beck Burke as the new head women's basketball coach after Felisha Leggette-Jack left for Syracuse last week. Burke comes to Buffalo from USC Upstate, where she was the 2022 Big South Coach of the Year. Unfortunately for Burke, former Bulls Saniia Wilson and Georgia Woolley announced they will be following Leggette-Jack to Syracuse. Woolley was the MAC Freshman of the Year, avergaing 14.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. In baseball, Ball State and Central Michigan continue to sit atop the standings. Both were dominant this past weekend, with the Chippewas sweeping four games from Ohio and Ball State taking three of four from Toledo. Elsewhere, Kent State got a win over nationally ranked UConn. To close out the show, the boys talk a little football. Buffalo RB Dylan McDuffie re-entered his name into the transfer portal, after briefly exploring the option to transfer earlier this winter. McDuffie was the sixth leading rusher in the MAC last year and the leading rusher for the Bulls, who have now lost both their starting running back and their starting quarterback from last season. Ron Cook, Jr. seems primed to fill McDuffie's shoes in the backfield. Lasty, Zack and Zach take a look at the 2022 MAC football schedule and give some initial reactions. Kent State has a brutal non-conference schedule (as usual), and a few MAC teams host power five opponents at home. We are still five months away from football, but the season can't get here fast enough! As always, thanks for stopping by this week folks. Don't forget to subscribe on your favorite podcast platform so you don't miss anything! Have a great weekend, and we'll see you back here next week. Learn more about your ad choices. During this episode, we welcome a specialist in leading high-performance women to the top of their game. John Sung, Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach at Virginia Tech, is a minority in both ethnicity and gender for his industry and is considered one of the top 25 collegiate lacrosse coaches in the world. John shares with our listeners his secrets of how to motivate Gen-Zers and explains that understanding purpose is critical in tapping the talent in his up and coming leadership class. He sheds light on the differences between building an organization from scratch and working to transform a storied one and highlights how three types of leaders supported him on his non-linear path to success. If you have a daughter, you can’t miss the advice he shares with you for them – both for athletics and beyond. About John Sung In just three seasons in Blacksburg, John Sung has guided the Virginia Tech lacrosse program to new heights, including its first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2018 as the Hokies advanced into the Second Round. Sung’s Hokies have reset records for wins in a season, ACC wins, goals against average, point scored and goals scored in a single season and Sung, a former goalie, helped Meagh Graham set the program record for lowest goals against average in a season at 9.64 during the 2017 campaign. In his first season in Blacksburg, Sung engineered the best turnaround in program history winning six more games than the previous season. In 2017, the Hokies won 11 games, equaling the tally of the 1999 squad and reaching double figure wins for the first time since 2012. The team set program records in several categories including ACC wins in a season, goals scored, and points scored. Hired on May 27, 2016, Sung joined Virginia Tech after building the Winthrop University program from scratch beginning in May of 2011. He oversaw the program’s rapid ascent as a regional powerhouse after beginning competition in 2013. In the program’s third season, Sung led Winthrop to a 17-4 record, as the Eagles qualified for the NCAA Tournament after winning both the Big South regular-season and tournament titles. In 2016, Winthrop went 20-3, winning the Big South Tournament championship and advancing to another NCAA Tournament. The 2016 season marked the team’s second consecutive Big South regular-season and tournament titles. In 2018, a record four Hokies were named to the first team All-ACC, and in 2019 Paige Petty repeated the feat becoming the first Virginia Tech player to do so twice. The 2015 and 2016 Big South Coach of the Year, Sung formerly was the chair of the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee and also serves on the U.S. Lacrosse Convention Education Committee. His 2015 squad set Big South single-season records for points, goals (314), free-position goals (67), shots (633), shots on goal (459), ground balls (384), draw controls (312), and caused turnovers (213). In 2016, Winthrop scored 301 goals, including 58 free-position goals. The Eagles set Big South single-season marks for shots (662), ground balls (434), and caused turnovers (266). In addition to compiling a 54-26 overall record at Winthrop, Sung led the Haudenosaunee Nation to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup held in Canada. The team finished in seventh place out of a total of 19 teams. He also coached the team in the 2009 Federation of International Lacrosse in the Czech Republic. Sung’s ascent as an NCAA coach began at Division III Adrian College in Michigan, where he started the program from the ground up and compiled a 46-19 overall record. Episode 248 After spending six seasons working under Tony Bennett as associate head coach at Virginia, McKay returned to Liberty as the men's basketball head coach on April 1, 2015. McKay previously served as the program's head coach during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Despite being predicted to finish 11th in the 2015-16 Big South Preseason Poll, McKay guided the Flames to a top five seed and a first round bye in the 2016 Big South Championship, finishing 10-8 in conference play. The Flames' finish in the standings prompted McKay to receive Big South Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Liberty, McKay helped the Cavaliers post a 136-64 record, including back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15. Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty's men's basketball coach, posting a 39-28 overall record and a 19-13 mark in Big South play. He was named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2007. Coming into the 2018-19 season, McKay has compiled a 204-186 career coaching record in 13 seasons as a head coach and has the  winningest career coaching record in program history with a .582 winning percentage.  Prior to his first stint as head coach at Liberty, McKay served as head coach at Portland State (1996-98), Colorado State (1998-00), Oregon State (2000-02) and New Mexico (2002-07). This season, Liberty is having a terrific season, already winning 20 games (through Feb. 11) and is the favorite to make the NCAA Tournament out of the Big South Conference. On December 29, 2018, Liberty defeated a Pac-12 opponent for the first time in its school's history, as they went into historic Pauley Pavilion and beat UCLA, 73-58. On this episode of the podcast, we talk to coach McKay about how this season has been going, his faith journey, the differences coaching for a place like Virginia compared to coaching at Liberty and the incredible story of his Dad coming to faith in Christ on his death bed.  For more, log on to http://SportsSpectrum.com
