In the newest episode of Becoming HeadStrong, Coach Chelsea talks to us about wearing the expensive perfume. What Chelsea means by this is that we do not need to always wait. Don't wait to tell others how much you appreciate them. Don't wait to wear the outfit you've been saving for months and months. We don't always need to wait because we don't know if we will get the chance to make due on our waiting. This is impactful when dealing with loss because we can have regrets if we lose someone due to not sharing our thoughts and feelings with them. Life is short. Don't wait. Do what makes you happy.

Coach Chelsea speaks wih Coach Simmons as she takes the helm at the University of Memphis. We speak about her plans, her faith in God, Servant Leadership, and apply those principles to her assignment as Head Coach. Two-time NCAA National Champion and Tennessee native Alex Simmons was named the head coach of the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team on April 6, 2023 and became the 13th head coach in the program's history. Simmons comes to Memphis after five seasons at the helm of Gardner-Webb where she led the team to a 90-59 record including a 29-5 mark this past season. The Runnin' Bulldogs broke multiple program, school and Big South records with their 29 victories and a 21-game win streak that included a perfect 18-0 record in conference play. GWU captured the regular season and championship titles for the program's first trip to the Big Dance since the 2010-11 season. Simmons, who was named as the Big South Coach of the Year, saw four of her five starters earn All-Big South honors in 2022-23, while Jhesskya Williams became just the third player in Gardner-Webb history to surpass 2,000 career points, finishing as the program's second all-time leading scorer with 2,049 points. Simmons' basketball roots run deep to one of the most respected programs in the game. She played collegiately at the University of Tennessee under basketball Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt from 2004-2009, helping the Lady Vols win back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 2007 and 2008. Simmons was a member of three Final Four squads (2005, 2007, 2008) and another Elite Eight team (2006) while serving as a team captain and was also the Lady Vols representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). During the 2021-22 season, Simmons steered the Dogs to an overall record of 11-13 and 10-7 in the Big South. Under Simmons, Alasia Smith was named the Big South Freshman of the Year after the five-time Freshman of the Week averaged 11.3 PPG, 8.3 RPG and led the conference with 4.0 offensive rebounds per game. Simmons led the Runnin' Bulldogs to an 18-11 overall record and 13-7 in Big South Conference play in 2019-20, finishing fifth in the league standings. GWU ended the season on a hot streak, winning four-straight games and seven of their last eight matchups before play was halted prior to the Big South tournament. Under Simmons, Carley Plentovich earned a handful of accolades during the 2019-20 season, including All-Big South honors, as well as a Big South Player of the Week award. She also became the program's 24th 1,000-point scorer, the first under Simmons, and was named to the Big South's All-Academic team. In her first season in Boiling Springs, Simmons led Gardner-Webb to a 16-15 record and 10-8 Big South mark in 2018-19 with a fifth-place finish. Two players - Plentovich and Williams – would earn All-Big South honors. Simmons took over the Runnin' Bulldogs in April 2018 after assistant coaching stints at Ole Miss (2013-2018) and Middle Tennessee State (2010-2013). She also served as a graduate assistant coach at Kansas (2009-2010). Prior to her time at Ole Miss, Simmons served as an assistant coach at Middle Tennessee State, helping the Blue Raiders to three NCAA Tournament appearances during her time on the bench. Her work with the team's post players produced an honorable-mention All-America selection and in the 2011-2012 season saw the Blue Raiders grab the most rebounds since 1983. Also a Street & Smith's All-America Honorable Mention selection in 2001 and 2002, Simmons helped the Golden Eaglettes to Tennessee State Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. She was a three-time All-State selection, four-time All-District choice and was named as the Mid-State Player of the Year in 2003. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2008 with a degree in exercise science. Simmons and her husband, Christian, have two daughters – Carsyn and Channing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chefranjohn/support
In the newest episode of Becoming HeadStrong, Coach Chelsea is here to talk about a documentary she recently was able to watch. The role of a coach in developing a self-fulfilling prophecy for an athlete is incredible. This documentary, "Underrated", is about Steph Curry and his ability to find success while not being the prototypical NBA star. Chelsea breaks down the label of being underrated, the self-fulfilling prophecy, and how we can apply all these ideas to ourselves and our own experiences.
Coach Chelsea speaks with Coach Rouse on Servant Leadership and what it means to serve for the return of Christ. As the head coach of women's basketball and surf, Kyle is entering his 18th year as a basketball coach and 2nd year with Westcliff University. He enters his first year as a surf coach and is in the inaugural season with the Westcliff University surf team. Kyle played high school basketball at Murrieta Valley High School where he won 2 coaches awards and a playoff berth his senior year. He began his coaching career at Murrieta Valley High School with his coaching mentor Steve Tarabilda. He coached there for 5 years in the boy's program before continuing to Murrieta Mesa High School where he coached the boys' program for two years then switched over to the girls' program for another 6 years where his team made the CIF playoffs 5 out of the 6 seasons and setting multiple school records. His last high school season before coming to Westcliff was at Temecula Valley High School where he turned around a struggling program to a winning record and a narrow miss of the CIF playoffs. Coach Rouse also was selected by the WBCA to speak at the Final Four in 2017 as a guest speaker and has served as a mentor coach for 2 years. Kyle understands the value of community within his leadership and believes positive community involvement is a part of his coaching role. He has joined with Special Olympics, the American Cancer Society, and other community programs in his years as a coach. He believes involving his student-athletes in the community helps them understand the big picture. He also is a board member for the Rick Gabrielson Memorial Scholarship Foundation which allows high school student-athletes to receive scholarships to go to college. I was recently a guest on the podcast Food Allergy Freedom for Moms with Chelsea Winterholler. We talked all about marriage and how working together in marriage can help you with your child's food allergy. And while not all of you might have a child with food allergies, I think the principles that we talked about are really applicable. So even though this interview was done for Chelsea's podcast, I found it so useful and insightful that I asked her if I could share it here. She agreed so this is a conversation that Chelsea, who's also a certified life coach, and I have about marriage. Enjoy!

Coach Chelsea speaks with Jeri Porter on her faith and love for God and Servant Leadership. Porter was named to the position on May 11, 2015, and made an immediate impact. Inheriting a squad that lost 20 games the year before and was picked to finish next to last according to the pre-season Peach Belt Conference coaches' poll, she directed the Patriots to a 24-9 record, a No.23 national rankings, and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. That squad produced one All-Conference performer and one PBC All-Academic Team selection. During her second year, FMU went 18-12 and placed second in the Peach Belt Conference's East Division. The Patriots advanced to the PBC Tournament semifinals, one player earned All-Conference honors, and one garnered Academic All-Conference recognition. In 2017-18, the Patriots posted a 16-12 mark and saw two players earn All-Conference honors and one pick up All-Region and All-America accolades. In 2018-19, FMU went 12-15 with one player gaining All-Conference and All-Region honors, and during the 2019-20 season the Patriots were 14-13 and featured a pair of All-PBC performers. Altogether, Porter has 21 years experience as a collegiate head coach – 11 at the NCAA Division I level and 10 at the Division II level – and has recorded a 294-300 career mark. She came to Florence after spending the 2014-15 season at Georgia State University as an assistant on the Panthers' staff. Porter's first head coaching position was at Division II University of North Alabama, where she posted three winning marks in four seasons, including a 21-7 record in 1999-2000. That squad captured the Gulf South Conference East Division title, while Porter garnered conference Coach of the Year recognition. She was named the head coach at Radford in 2002 and led the Highlanders to 93 wins in six seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns and two second-place finishes in the Big South Conference. Her 2007-08 squad was 23-12 and earned a WNIT invitation. In 2008, she accepted the head coaching position at George Mason University, where she remained until 2013. Porter increased the Patriots' win total over her first four seasons (from four to 15 wins). During her time in Fairfax, she also created and directed the Jeri Porter Girls' Basketball Camps. Her final two squads posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.09. Porter is a 1991 graduate of Liberty University, where she earned a B.S. degree in psychology. She garnered first-team All-Big South Conference honors as a senior and was twice named her squad's most valuable player. She was inducted into the university's Lady Flames Hall of Fame in 1998. She began her coaching career at her alma mater serving as an assistant coach for six seasons, during which time the Lady Flames won two conference tournament championships and advanced to the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournaments. She married Michael Porter of Manassas, Va., in 1997 and the couple has a son (EJ, age 20) and a daughter (Jada, 11). Her son plays basketball at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Porter is the 13th head coach in the storied history of the Francis Marion program. He could walk toward that light every day, one step at a time. He chose to walk toward the light. And he began by asking questions. Had my upbringing led me astray? Coach Chelsea speaks with Rachel Baribeau about how she exudes the attributes of a Proverbs 31 Woman in her initiative #ImChangingTheNarrative Rachel developed #ImChangingtheNarrative with student-athletes in mind and a belief that one crooked course made straight is everything. One misstep not taken means one less victim in the world. And one less life thrown away because of a split-second bad decision. At Rachel's first visit sometimes they're skeptical when the petite Latina woman is introduced, but in just 60 minutes she wins them over. She now speaks to athletes, law enforcement, churches, and corporations about taking back the headlines for good – showing them that they have the power to change the narrative and to find their purpose in life outside of their sport and everyday lives. To live lives of… Purpose, Passion and Platform. Just like her inspiration, Alabama and NFL star Kevin Turner did before he succumbed to ALS and CTE. When she's finished, they wait in line to speak to her. They tweet, private message, and text her. They trust her and report back on their efforts to become the kings and queens she consistently challenges them. While the message originated as purpose, passion, platform, over four-plus years and 40 campuses, it now encompasses, heavily, mental health, being a KING/QUEEN every day of your life, and interpersonal relationships, as Rachel was a victim of domestic violence herself. When she's not scaling the world's tallest freestanding mountain to raise money for ALS or speaking from a stage or computer near you, she enjoys working one-on-one to help others find their own personal #ImChangingtheNarrative, and reclaim their God-given JOY! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chefranjohn/support
