I see authors and low content book creators forging ahead full steam to write or design their books before they decide on the niche markets their books will serve and what those markets could want and need. America is intrinsically divided and broken. The soul of America appears to be lost and devoid of leadership. It is hardly a political opinion to suggest at this point, the messaging from the White House has been at best inadequate and at worst a clear dereliction of duty. We've gone from the virus being a Democratic hoax and “the 15 (cases) within a couple of days, is going to be down to close to zero" to a few days later a national emergency being declared to being told we should be largely through the crisis by Easter. What kind of coverage of that kind of back and forth is fair? Or unfair? Racial tensions are also stoked again thanks to the untimely death of George Floyd. Which brought to surface the work which still needs to be done to bridge the gap of racial division in the country. How will all these issues play in an election year? How do we heal a broken nation? This was the, genesis of my discussion with Mary C. Curtis. Have you ever wanted someone to let you off the hook for all the things you don’t want to do? You know, the things that keep nagging at your mind, that you know you should do, but for some reason you just keep procrastinating on. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone just swooped into your life and said, “It’s OK, you don’t have to do those things anymore. I’m granting you full permission to let them go.” I wish for that all the time. So, today, allow me to grant you permission to do just that. It probably sounds like I’m promoting mass laziness … like I’m giving you a free pass to ignore your responsibilities and essentially become a selfish, irresponsible, lazy sloth. But that’s not at all what I’m doing… After you’ve listened, come leave a comment over on the blog to let us know what you’ve been procrastinating doing lately. Let’s be honest: All of us have an inner control freak that likes to surface from time to time (or maybe has fully taken over and is running our lives!). And it makes sense — we’re wired, by nature, to hate uncertainty and want clarity, answers, and a solid plan, preferably before taking any action. Our inner control freak is trying to quell our anxiety about what’s on the horizon, but the need to control everything (and maybe everyone) in our lives ends up creating even more anxiety, because nothing ever goes according to plan. Caela Gray knows all too well how stressful life can feel when you let your inner control freak run the show. She made the radical decision earlier this year to do less, relax more, and not always have a plan for everything. She was afraid her life would devolve into chaos, but what happened instead was almost magical: her relationships improved, amazing opportunities came out of the blue, and she felt more clear-minded than ever. Listen in to this week’s interview with a normal person as Kristen and Caela talk about… Caela’s personal history with the need for control and wanting to have all the answers in advance. How her inner control freak pushed her into overachieving and constant productivity. Her decision earlier this year to slow down, let go of the need to be constantly doing, and allow life to just flow … and what happened as a result. How she overcame her fears about letting go of control and needing a plan for everything. How she recognizes when her inner control freak is rearing its head again, and what she does in response. After you’ve listened, leave a comment to let us know how Caela’s story resonated with you. MORE ABOUT CAELA An old soul in the body of a twenty-one-year-old, Caela is a third-year university student, who loves nothing more than a cinnamon-sprinkled cappuccino and intimate conversation. The transition to college was…rocky, but afforded ample time to get to the bottom of self-limiting beliefs and starting down a path that encompassed her values. After 10 major changes (settled on French Studies), study abroad, solo travel, Brenè Brown Ted talks, and a little help from Clarity on Fire, joining the working world now seems a lot less overwhelming. Feeling not quite satisfied with her formal education, Caela leaned into her entrepreneurial spirit and recently co-founded Dear Curiosity, a personalized travel itinerary planning business, and is beginning coursework for her professional coaching certification in November (shoutout to iPEC!). As an INTJ, Firestarter, Enneagram type 1, highly sensitive, ambitious, young woman, Caela understands the struggle of feeling a bit like an outsider. But, finding the courage to practice vulnerability and give herself permission to just be, has revitalized her life in the most unexpected ways. In most states, physicians are able to dispense medications in their offices to patients. Although it isn't the most common practice, it allows doctors to have a better handle on how well their patients are following medication instructions, adds convenience for patients, and oftentimes leads to lower prices. However, there are six states that do not allow physicians the privilege of dispensing the medications despite the fact that they are examining, diagnosing, determining a treatment plan, and prescribing medications. My guest today is Dr. Kris Held, the new president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and an ophthalmologist in private practice. She wants to dispense medicines to her patients in the office which would help in their compliance and save them lots of money - often upwards of 70% or more on what they would pay at the pharmacy. After trying to get laws passed to change the rules in Texas, she has teamed up with the Institute for Justice to sue the state. Their legal case is built upon the justification that the State of Texas is violating the state constitution with irrational and protectionist laws affecting her legal right to earn a living. The argument that pharmacies should only dispense medications because of safety concerns seems to be debunked by the fact that 44 states have had this privilege with no obvious problems. Also, there is a significant cost savings that could be gained through this practice. Currently, Texas spends over $3 billion on medication prescriptions each year in their MedicAid program. That translates into approximately $75 per prescription. One practice in Kansas, which is allowed to dispense in house writes 22,000 prescriptions a year and spends an average of $6 per prescription. This means even if Texas could only move a quarter of their dispensation to doctor's offices they might save $1 billion. That's a lot of money and could be spent elsewhere in the budget or maybe returned to taxpayers. Kris Held, MD is an ophthalmologist in private practice at Stone Oak Ophthalmology in San Antonio, TX. She is the new president of the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). show notes Stone Oak Ophthalmology: Dr. Held's practice in San Antonio, TX Texas Doctor Dispensing Case: This is the write up on the Institute for Justice case that Dr. Held is fighting for dispensing medications in the doctor's offices. A while back I was catching up with one of my very first clients-turned-friends. (Random aside: This is one of the things I love about coaching. You get to connect with really cool people who often end up becoming lifelong buddies.) In our conversation she mentioned that an off-the-cuff (and definitely not super serious) analogy I’d made had actually really helped her to see life differently. So much so that she still thinks about it to this day. (This story involves references to horses and aliens … so don’t say I didn’t warn ya.) Rae, my friend and former client, originally came to me for some relationship coaching. Even though you’d think that talking about relationships is completely different than coaching around your career or passion in life … it’s really not. You take your beliefs, triggers and deep fears with you everywhere you go and into anything that you do. What prevents someone from having a healthy relationship is often the exact thing that’s getting in the way of having an awesome career. Anyway, Rae was struggling to let go of something (particularly, a relationship with a guy) that was no longer healthy for her. I’m sure you can relate, in one way or another—you know intellectually that you’d be better off moving on (from the relationship, the friendship, the job, whatever)—but you still feel tied to it because it’s all you know. I sent her an email to help her see things differently, and it changed everything for her. I’m sharing exactly what I said in this week’s blog. DOWNLOAD OUR FREE E-BOOK! We don’t want to think about it but I’m sure lots of us do. What happens if/when we blow our knee? what does it mean when that happens, what are the mechanics that contribute to it; what choices need to be made for treatment and recovery? There are many things today to consider, and today, Brian Harder, a frequent guest and good friend of mine shares his philosophy, sadly, from personal experience. Earlier this year, Brian had an ACL injury in the backcountry. Being an orthopedic physician assistant and therefore medically trained, Brian brings some interesting and debatable albeit a scientific approach to dealing with a ruptured ACL. We’ll discuss factors that led to the incident and lessons to perhaps avoid your own. Hint: that GoPro on your head might have more consequences than you realize. We’ll analyze the incident itself and best practices for getting your sorry ass out of the backcountry without making the problem worse. After that, many decisions must be made: surgery immediately or later? What type of graft? How should I choose the right surgeon? Please note, although medically trained, this is obviously not medical advice. We all present unique factors and unique cases. Brian says so himself in the show - these are his opinions in a sea of opinions. You know we all have two things in common and one of those is opinions. You should do your own due diligence and discuss your specific case. Many would disagree with his thoughts here, while others would agree. Also, for context, Brian is 56 at the time of the recording. Well? What did you think? Agree? Disagree? have questions? we’d love to hear your experience - what worked for you, what you might have done differently. please include your age and fitness level when yo do. If you have questions, you can contact me privately or include it in the comments at takeabigleap dot com/ ACL With that, let’s listen in and gear up for what’s next: Where to find Brian: Instagram - brian.skimolife Blog You can find Brian at skimolife.com and on instagram at brian.skimolife

No parent wants to believe their middle school teen (or younger) is sexting. Maybe it's not your teen, but it's the teen culture. One thing that moms don't think about, is that your teen may not be an initiator of the sexting but could easily be the recipient. Sexting has become a huge cultural problem for teens. Here are some statistics from 2009 and the numbers are not getting any better. The percent of teenagers sending or posting sexually suggestive messages: 39% of all teenagers, 37% of teen girls, 40% of teen boys48 Percent of teenagers say they have received such messages71 Percent of teen girls and 67% of teen guys who have sent or posted sexually suggestive content say they have sent or posted this content to a boyfriend or girlfriend.36 Percent of teen girls and 39 % of teen boys say it is common for nude or semi-nude photos to get shared with people other than the intended recipient.51 Percent of teen girls say pressure from a guy is a reason girls send sexy messages or images; only 18 % of teen boys cited pressure from female counterparts as a reason.52 Percent of teenage girls used sexting as a “sexy present” for their boyfriend.34 Percent of teen girls say they sent or posted sexually suggestive content to “feel sexy.”12 Percent of teen girls felt “pressured” to send sexually suggestive messages or images. In this episode I interview Benjamin Dancer. He is an Advisor at Jefferson County Open School where he has made a career out of mentoring young people as they come of age. He wrote the novel PATRIARCH RUN, a coming-of-age story. Benjamin writes about parenting and education. He is also a father of three. Today we are going to talk about a very important issue that catches many parents unaware--sexting. Besides being the founder of Power Your Parenting, I have been in private practice as a marriage and family therapist for over 20 years. I have worked with many teen issues over the past two decades. By far the biggest issue I have dealt with this year is the devastating consequences of sexting. Many of these clients were girls in middle school, who because of pressure, naiveness, and an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, ended up sending semi-nude pictures to boys who forwarded them throughout the community. This is every mothers worst fear. My hope is that this podcast will help moms become educated and aware, so they can educate and empower their teens to say no to sexting. Benjamin and I talk about when we were teens we made lots of mistakes. The problem in this culture, is that a mistake like sexting leaves a permanent record in the digital world. Here are some questions we address. At what age does sexting become an issue? What moms need to know about sexting. What can moms do to prevent and protect their teen from sexting? How do you talk to your teen about sexting? What should parents do if they suspect their son or daughter is sexting? *** If your teen has been shamed or humiliated because of texting there is a lot you can do. You can help your teen get on the other side of this. The girls I have worked with were able to learn big lessons from this experience and come out wiser, stronger, and with a greater confidence.
