Greetings from the Redcliffe & Districts Radio Club VK4RC. Robert Thomson VK4TFN here. REDFEST 25 "Adventures on HF" will be held on the 12th of April 2025. Our new venue will be The Deception Bay North State School, Old Bay Road, Deception Bay. We will raffle off a very nice ICOM IC-7300. Go to: www.redclifferadioclub.org.au for more information. Hello and welcome to the weekly update from the Darling Downs Radio Club. I'm Secretary John VK4JPM. It's Groundhog Day, so I've checked with Punxatawnie Phil and we're either in for another four weeks of Queensland snow, or this segment will replay over and over again until the next Club meeting on Monday 10 February. At Darling Downs Radio Club we believe that being social is an important part of amateur radio, so a reminder about our bi-monthly informal lunch this coming Saturday, February 8th. We'll be meeting at Cafe Inferno in the Southern Hotel on Ruthven Street Toowoomba Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. The technology that we use depends on what is generally called a commodity and which we pay for in increasingly high premiums, that of electricity. Mostly we are supplied by a reticulated service and the electrons are persuaded to travel the network in various ways that we call generation. We seem to have seen a total revolution as batteries were the first way of making electricity available, then came electromagnetic generation with various forms of energy providing the mechanical forces to rotate the magnetic fields and we have now revived the storage battery to facilitate use. Various uses of electricity have occurred over the last 3 centuries, and the latest fad that has swept the share market speculators off their feet has been that of artificial intelligence. AI was undergoing an ethical analysis as to the limits of its uses and the capacities it should be allowed to develop and then ChatGPT was launched on the world. Shares in the “chip” manufacturer, Nvidia, soared but not as high as the fictional cryptocurrencies. Then this past week a new player with reportedly fewer demands on computing power lobbed into view and the stock exchanges reeled. Before the release of the Chinese-developed AI app, there were questions as to whether the electricity grids could meet the high demand of the data centres which hurled the gazzillions of terabytes of data into the internet to make AI work. Then some cheeky environmentalist types added further to the debate by querying the amount of water that the data centres demanded to maintain suitably cool environments for the computers to make the magic. What we saw in the development of electricity as a necessary tool is the benefits of economies of scale. As more people were able to access electricity, the costs of providing it fell until somewhere in the last quarter century the Western world lost sight of the things that are useful and renamed them as commodities. Utilities such as water and electricity were processed and supplied at sustainable costs but when controls were relinquished, and plants were sold off the prices rose. With AI becoming more ubiquitous the processes of refining its use and recovering the costs involved should, like electricity did once, fall with the greater uptake. Perhaps the union of AI and quantum computing will provide the impetus for a dramatic renaissance and dynamism to the sciences and technology. Boffins have been debating whether the fictional devices of the TV “Star Trek” series such as matter transporters can not only be imagined but also constructed and used. Perhaps we are at the dawning of the Age of Aquarius after all and amateur radio will see a flowering that few of us can imagine. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

PHIL A very good morning to you all! You're listening to Colourful Radio and I'm Phil Woodford in London introducing our weekly news review show, Five in the Eye. It's where we look back at everything that's gone over the past seven days, pick the stuff that interests us and give it a once-over. This is episode 0449, which will excite my co-host, as it's a PRIME number. MICHAEL Yes, indeed! This is an excited Michael Ohajuru joining Phil via Zoom for this prime number show and revealing we have a very special guest joining us. He's an old friend from my home city of Liverpool. It's Mr Mark Dalgliesh. Welcome to Five in the Eye, Mark! MARK Thanks, Michael. Hello, Phil. It's great to be here on the show. So what's our top story going to be today? Well, the talk at the recent security summit in Germany was of a ‘lose-lose' scenario in international relations. Former Labour Minister David Miliband described the meeting as ‘the conference of a disordered world'. How worried should we be? PHIL What's story number two? Well, it's Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. He's in hot water over his supposedly woke inclinations. Not only did he rename London Overground lines with monikers such as Windrush and Suffragette, but he's shortlisting what some claim are ‘anti-British' sculptures for the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. MICHAEL We love something controversial on Five in the Eye, so why not the claim that men and women's brains are different? Boffins at Stanford University in the USA say they've found evidence that some of us are sugar and spice and all things nice, while others are made of snips and snails and puppy-dog tails! That's story number three. MARK For our fourth story, cathedrals are under fire for allowing events such as silent discos to raise funds. Is nothing sacred any more? PHIL And finally, to wrap up the show, it's the Olympic showjumper who was horsing around recently, wearing just a ‘mankini' at an event near Sydney, Australia. MICHAEL We're all here in our mankinis today, so I don't see what this gentleman has done wrong! And that's this week's Five in the Eye! ++++

Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) Dickens' last complete novel was published serially 1864-5. It begins with an intriguing fortune offered to John Harmon by his late father, a rich dust contractor, in his will.To receive the money, John must marry a certain Bella Wilfer who he does not know from Eve. He is returning from the exile enforced by his father and confides in a ship's mate who attempts to murder him. The mate gets killed instead, leaving one inconvenient corpse. Because John is considered dead (the body is found with his papers), the money passes to Mr Boffin, old Harmon's foreman. Harmon adopts Bella and John comes into his employ disguised as John Rokesmith. Bella does not fall for John but through kindly Boffin's contrivances learns to hate money and fall for her suitor under his false name. Eventually she learns of his true identity as the Boffins had previously, and the villainous one-legged Silas Wegg's plot to blackmail Mr Boffin is brought to light. There is also a story running behind the main plot about a certain Eugene Wrayburn and his love for Lizzie Hexam, and his rival's attempt to murder him. The two plots are only really connected through the waterside murders but it allows Dickens to indulge in an extremely socially diverse cast of characters. (Summary written by Alan Chant). Our Mutual Friend, the last novel completed by Charles Dickens, has many plots, twists and turns, from the murky river Thames to the gold and crystal on the tables of ‘Society'. A tale of murder, treachery, jealousy and love, takes us first to a rowing boat on the Thames, where the Hexhams have found a body in the water and are bringing it to shore. We attend the Boffins, a poor naïve couple, who unexpectedly have just become wealthy, after their employer dies and names them in his will. Silas Wegg becomes their ‘literary man' and John Rokesmith, a mysterious man, becomes their secretary. We meet the Veneerings, new to society, who hold elaborate dinner parties for ‘dear friends' they've never met. Bella and Lizzie, each from different walks of life, find love from unexpected quarters. The Lammles, a society couple, become match makers for their own ulterior motives. Two ne'er do well lawyers, Mortimer Lightwood and Eugene Wrayburn, find themselves caught up in intrigue, and learn how dangerous their work can be. Riderhood, a devious individual, finds himself in a dark plot with school teacher Bradley Headstone. Betty Higden, a loyal elderly woman, whose independence and love are so inspiring, our hearts go out to her. Rafael Behr talks to Rob Hutton, parliamentary sketch writer at the Critic, about the uneasy relationship between Westminster lobby journalists and MPs.Often political journalists cultivate close relationships with politicians to find out what's really happening in the corridors of power. But does a journalist's 'insider status' cloud their judgement when working out how to write about political stories or policy ssues, or whether to cover them at all?Does it inevitably become a trade-off between, a steady stream of 'exclusives', and a fair and objective approach to reporting? If so, what does this mean for democracy?Rob Hutton is an author and freelance journalist. He spent 16 years covering the British government for Bloomberg, taking in five prime ministers, as many elections, and the odd referendum. Before that, he worked for the Mirror and the Financial Times. He now has a regular spot as sketchwriter for The Critic. His career has been a mix of seriousness and satire. While he was a reporter for Bloomberg, unquestionably The Global News Organisation Least Likely To Tell A Joke, he wrote Romps, Tots & Boffins, a satirical book about the words only journalists use. He followed that up with Would They Lie to You?, about the way politicians got around reality without actually uttering untruths (it was a more innocent age). According to Rob, his most recent book, Agent Jack, doesn't have quite so many laughs, although he says there's an incident with a jar of marmalade and a blueprint for a Vickers tank. 'Oh, and there's a naked German in a wardrobe.' Here's a link to his Podcast - A Pod Too FarRafael Behr's first book was released in May, 2023**'Politics, A Survivor's Guide,'** is all about the infuriating toxicity of politics, how it got that way and how to resist the slide into cynicism and pessimism that are so corrosive of democracy. It's about the challenge of staying engaged without getting enraged; the need to empathise with people whose views we cannot share and how that is different to appeasement of politics we believe to be dangerous.Available from Waterstones:https://www.waterstones.com/book/politics-a-survivors-guide/rafael-behr/9781838955045Or, for those who are interested in signed copies, from City Books in Hove:https://www.city-books.co.ukPolitics on the Couch has been chosen by Feedspot as both one of the Top 25 UK Psychology Podcasts and Political Science Podcasts on the web.https://blog.feedspot.com/uk_psychology_podcastshttps://blog.feedspot.com/political_science_podcasts Hosted on Acast. PHIL Hello and a very warm welcome to Five in the Eye, Colourful Radio's weekly news review show. In London, I'm Phil Woodford and you're listening to episode 0331. Yes, Michael, that's episode 331. MICHAEL Thanks for the prompt, Phil! A prime number episode, which is always extra special - for me at least! But today's show is special for another reason too. We're welcoming a guest for the first time on the Eye - Mr Jak Beula, the founder and Chief Executive of the Nubian Jak Community Trust, an organisation which does so much to commemorate the contributions of black and minority ethnic people. Welcome Jak! JAK Hi there Michael, hello Phil. Thanks very much for inviting me on Five in the Eye. And I can reveal that our top story this week is going to be the scandal that has engulfed Yorkshire Cricket Club. The allegations of racism levelled against particular players and a culture of cover-up have rocked the sport. Will the new Chairman, Lord Kamlesh Patel, be able to turn things around? PHIL For story number two, it's the decision by Health Secretary Sajid Javid that all NHS workers need to be double vaxxed by next April. With 110,000 employees still holding out against the jabs, are we in danger of causing a staffing crisis in the already over-stretched health service? MICHAEL Story number three this week is about the work of our guest, Jak, and how it sometimes gets misinterpreted. Nubian Jak Community Trust recently unveiled a plaque to the Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti. When the story was written up on news sites in Lagos, they seemed determined to attribute the commemoration to English Heritage! JAK Yes, I shall reveal all later! And what's story number four? Well, Marcus Rashford was awarded his MBE by Prince William, who seemed very keen to be the one who stepped in to confer the honour. And Marcus has said that he'll hand the medal over to his mum! MICHAEL And finally this week, to finish the five. What time does your head hit the pillow of an evening? Boffins think that between 10 and 11 is the right time for shut-eye if you want to keep your heart functioning properly. +++++

It may be nearly Christmas, but we've still got a healthy heap of dread to serve up in the form of our fears about extinction level events. Highlights: • We don't usually bother discussing the lame duck U.S. president, but it has to be said: donald trump is a murderous cunt • Corri explains why she was MIA last week • Let's watch Nightmare on Elm St. together on our Discord on 12/19/20! https://discord.gg/HuBTacyn5Y • We discuss extinction level events that keep us up at night. Or keep Corri up. Mark's fine. • We get a little Communist • We loved Freaky and Mark really loves Vince Vaughn Hop into our Discord, chat with us on Twitter, and follow us on the Instagram!
