After an Iowa Track & Field star clocked a 4.12 40 during halftime of the Hawkeyes game, it leads us to open the show with Robert Horry’s second homework assignment of the week. He wanted to know what athletes could excel in other sports – and Jenners asks about NBA players specifically who we think could play in the NFL. Names like LeBron and Ant of course pop up, but Rob goes with the obvious picks of Charlie Ward and Jalen Suggs, who both played college football.   As the season unfolds, Rob also wants to know what Wemby can do to put on weight before we get too far in, especially after that video surfaced this week of Stephen Adams backing him down in the post and there was nothing Wemby could do to stop him. Plus after Anthony Richardson checked himself out of the Colts game, it reminds Rob of the time he pulled himself out of a game, but not because he was tired but because he was mad at Latrell Sprewell. Listeners also want to know what Rob thought about Chris Paul taking a swing at Dillon Brooks in the scrum this week, and Rob says that if you wanted to fight a guy in his day you just did it, or met at center court like Kobe and Reggie Miller.   We have even more listener questions on the table, including – Are the Magic poised for a breakout season? Is Russell Westbrook cooked, or just in the wrong system in Denver as Rob suggests? We dive into that, and acknowledge the NBA Halloween costume of the year… which goes to the guy who dressed up like Manu Ginobili and his girlfriend who dressed up as the bat he swatted out of the air during a game!

Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA, at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. We sat down in Bogues' home, inside a memorabilia room full of keepsakes from his career. We discussed Bogues' experience being shot as a child; the neighborhood recreation center Bogues says changed his life; and the former star's insistence that he really could dunk. In addition, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. When you come across an “it's been a while since the Knicks did a thing in the playoffs” stat, it generally means you have come across any historic Knicks playoff stat. But, hey, do you know the last time the Knicks closed out a series with a Game 5 road win?Of course you do, it's the Allan Houston game. That was one of nine all-time road Game 5 victories that the Knicks have ever had. The eighth, to be exact, because in the Eastern Conference finals, Latrell Sprewell put 29 points on the Pacers to break a 2-2 series tie, followed by Reggie Miller shooting 3-for-18 and scoring eight points in Game 6, which the Knicks won, 90-82, to go to their most recent NBA Finals. An aside: We as a nation should be talking more about the time Reggie Miller came to Madison Square Garden with the season on the line and put up the John Starks game from the 1994 Finals. Three-for-eighteen instead of two-for-eighteen, and a made three-pointer on eight tries compared to Starks' 0-for-11, but still, eight lousy points and have a nice summer. Only, John Starks wasn't a Hall of Famer carrying the 1994 Knicks. He was a dude who had a bad night. Reggie Miller, on the other hand, is a Hall of Famer and also a choke artist whose signature moment only happened because he shoved Greg Anthony and somehow got away with it.It was Knicks in six in that Eastern Conference finals, which of course was best-of-seven, but the first round at that time was best-of-five, which is why Houston's shot kind of feels like it was in a Game 7.Not to take away from the achievements of the Knicks teams who won do-or-die Game 5s on the road — at Detroit in 1984, at Boston in 1990, at Miami in 1998 in addition to 1999 — but that's a different kettle of fish. A nearly equal sized kettle, as it accounts for four out of the Knicks' nine Game 5 road wins ever. We are not going to simply overlook Bernard King scoring 44 at Joe Louis Arena, or Patrick Ewing dropping a 31-8-10 at the Other Garden, nor Starks connecting for 5-for-9 from downtown in a win-or-go-home game in which the running-on-fumes Knicks started Terry Cummings and gave legit minutes to Anthony Bowie, and won by 17 points.Of the four times the Knicks have won a Game 5 on the road in a best-of-seven series, two have been series clinchers and two have not. The first was decidedly not, as the 1951 Knicks needed every bit of Connie Simmons' 26 points and Max Zalsofsky's 24 to stay alive in the Finals against the Rochester Royals. The Knicks forced a return trip to western New York for Game 7, but fell, 79-75 — two of those Rochester points scored by Red Holzman. Two decades later, Holzman guided the Knicks to all the rest of their road Game 5 wins. First was Game 5 of the 1972 Eastern Conference semifinals in Baltimore, where Jerry Lucas led the way with 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Knicks went home and won Game 6 and the series, 107-101, with incredible balance that saw Lucas and Walt Frazier score 22 apiece, with 20 each for Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley. That Game 6, by the way, is the last time the Knicks had four 20-point scorers in a playoff game. The Lakers did that in Game 1 against Memphis this year with Rui Hachimura (29), Austin Reaves (23), Anthony Davis (22), and some guy named LeBron James (21). Actually, if D'Angelo Russell (19) could have gotten one more bucket, the Lakers would've been the first team with five guys scoring 20-plus in a playoff game since Game 5 of the 1987 Finals (Danny Ainge, Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish). Problem for that Celtics team was, the Lakers did the same dang thing in Game 2 with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Cooper, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, and James Worthy, and Los Angeles won the series in six.You know who else beat the Celtics? The 1972 Knicks, in five games, including 111-103 to padlock the arena by North Station for the summer. Or, for exactly one week before Game 1 of Bruins-Rangers in that year's Stanley Cup Final. That was the first time that the Knicks closed out a playoff series with a Game 5 road win. The second time, and the only other time that they did it in a best-of-seven?It was the last time the Knicks won the NBA title, with Earl Monroe scoring 23 and Willis Reed adding 18 and 12 to give New York its second title in four seasons. That's the last time the Knicks closed out a best-of-seven with a Game 5 road win, and the last time they won a title — 20 years before this retrospective piece that's now 30 years old. David Steele recounts the many twists and turns in his nearly four decades as a sportswriter. He takes us to Maryland in 1986 when the death of Len Bias shook the sports world. Go into the Garden on the night Anthony Mason sat in the upper deck during a Knicks game while he was suspended. Hear how David got the first print interview with Latrell Sprewell after the player choked his coach P.J. Carlesimo. David tells us about the greatest moment he ever covered: Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan made his final shot with the Chicago Bulls. And we discuss David's latest book, “It Was Always a Choice: Picking Up the Baton of Athlete Activism,” which chronicles the long tradition of athletes speaking out against racism, injustice, and oppression.   During his 36 years in sports journalism, David has covered the Olympics, the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, NCAA Final Four, and the playoffs in every major professional and college sport. He has worked for the Sporting News (2011-19), AOL FanHouse (2009-11), the Baltimore Sun, (2004-09) the San Francisco Chronicle (1995-2004), Newsday (1992-95), the New York Post (1988-89), The National Sports Daily (1989-91), and the St. Petersburg Times (1986-88). David was a sports columnist in Baltimore and San Francisco, and prior to that he spent 11 years covering the NBA as a beat reporter in New York and the Bay Area. He covered the NFL and Major League Baseball for the Sporting News and was an NFL beat reporter in St. Petersburg. He has also written for ESPN's The Undefeated, the Washington City Paper, the NAACP's The Crisis and several other publications. While he college, David worked internships at the Washington Post, Newsday, and the Raleigh News and Observer. He is currently writing for Law360.com after a brief stint at Inside Higher Ed. Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. In Part 2 of our conversation, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. Big thank you to NBA legend and author Muggsy Bogues for coming on my show for an interview! Muggsy talked about his new book Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to The Godfather Of Small Ball, getting his first basketball at the age of 3, and the rec center in Baltimore being the beginning of his basketball career. He discussed being shot at 5 years old and how that changed his mindset for when he was bullied for being short. He got into being apart of the greatest high school basketball team of all time with The Dunbar Poets from 1981 to 1983, setting ACC records at Wake Forest University, and winning a gold medal for the USA national team in the 1986 FIBA World Championship. Muggsy spoke about being drafted 12th overall in the 1987 draft to the Washington Bullets, his friendship with the late great Manute Bol, and his time with the Charlotte Hornets. He also talked about guarding Michael Jordan, being traded to the Warriors as well as seeing Latrell Sprewell choke coach P.J. Carlesimo, and being a leader for both Vince Carter & Tracy McGrady when he went to the Toronto Raptors. Muggsy gave his thoughts on the current state of the Hornets, LaMelo Ball, and if he would accept a head coaching job in the NBA. If you are a huge NBA fan, I highly recommend you go and read Muggsy's new book. You will not put it down once you start reading it. He is a true inspiration. Isaac Burton played 96 games in the NBL over four seasons with both the Sydney Kings and the Newcastle Falcons. A defensive ball hawk who excited the crowd with flashy dunks was a fan favourite in Sydney and the NBL during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Burton became embroiled in a point-shaving scandal during his time playing basketball (and baseball) at Arizona State University, a moment in history that has recently been made into a Netflix documentary called "Bad Sports". The documentary focuses primarily on the players at the centre of the ASU scandal, namely Stevin “Hedake” Smith and Burton, but it also zooms out to lay bare the real villain in their story: the NCAA, which doled out stipends so insufficient that athletes came to see point-shaving as their only means of survival.  Burton re-joins Aussie Hoopla to go into further detail on the point-shaving incident, discuss his involvement in the crimes and interactions with the FBI and how it impacted him. He also discusses his time playing basketball in Australia and Cyprus with Dan, remembering some of the highlights and lowlights from his career. Topics include...
