A business transformation plan is an essential part of implementing change in any business space. When is the last time your business went through a significant transformation? How did you handle it? What were some of your most substantial victories and pitfalls? In part one of a two-part episode, John Kackley speaks to Carla Cubert, a Business Management Consultant for Centric’s Chicago team. Carla has been a part of many business transformations over the years and brings her expertise to the conversation. In Carla’s words, “Business transformation is essentially changing for the betterment of an organization.” We talk about the importance of incremental change versus business transformation—learning a new step or approach compared to completely altering how employees engage with the business and produce results. Carla explains the importance of processes and being conscientious of how employees respond to change. Some of the more essential points covered include identifying a strategy and vision then aligning people, process, and plans to meet those goals. However, big or small the transformation plan, it changes the way a company does business. It’s essential to ensure all affected members of the company are on board. From the CEO to the most base-level employee, it’s crucial to keep everyone informed and on board each step of the way. Carla shares the best way to use a business transformation team and build out the best plan of success, including building a long-term and short-term strategy, understanding a clear vision, and setting goals and objectives. Cracking the Focus Code to Prevent Chaos James is Author, Speaker, Business Planning Strategist and Business Management Consultant, providing real and permanent solutions to business planning challenges through programs creating radical focus and accountability Transcript of the Interview with James Burgess Hugh Ballou: Greetings, this is Hugh Ballou and Russell David Dennis. Russell, how are you today? Russell Dennis:Greetings and salutations. It's a beautiful day here out in the mountain west. Hugh: And in Virginia, it's lovely. Our guest is from the Toronto, Canada area. Lovely place. I just love Toronto. It's like a clean New York City. It's got all of the great stuff, and it's clean. It's got great people there. I love going north of the border. Russell, why don't you tell people who our guest is and what his sweet spot is? He is going to introduce himself. Russell: Greetings. Today, we have a real treat. We have imported some brilliance from our neighbors to the north up in Canada. We have James Burgess, founder of Focus 31. He is a master business strategist who works with small companies, from start-ups to under $25 million in revenue, who tries to help them get out of their own way by focusing on the right things, creating the right systems. He has done all sorts of work with both businesses, profit-making businesses, not-for-profit entities and is well known throughout the Canada. Many associations he has made presentations to. James, welcome. Why don't you tell our friends on Facebook a little bit about yourself? James: Thank you, gentlemen. It is absolutely delightful to be with you this afternoon or this morning, depending on how far west your audience reaches. I would like to start before I introduce myself to dispel rumors that Canadians all live in igloos. It is equally gorgeous without the thin air that Denver has. It is about 77 degrees, clear, blue skies, and we are headed probably for about 82 by the weekend. Yes, I live in a house as you can see by the walls behind me. I say that all in fun. But every time I get to educate on what Canada is all about, I take the opportunity. It's a pleasure to meet all of your listeners, virtually of course. My name is James Burgess. I am a speaker. I am the author of the international best-selling book Chaos: How Business Leaders Can Master the Power of Focus. I'll give everyone an opportunity to get a free copy of this book at the end of the podcast, so stay on. I am the founder of Focus 31, a business that sells a service that no business owner wants, and yet we do it extremely successfully. Every business owner I sit down with or passes the table where my book is sitting says, “Yep, this is me. My business is in chaos, and I need focus.” Whenever they say “focus,” I know what they also need to be saying is I need accountability. That is entirely what Focus 31 does. I act, or my team acts as virtual CEOs for small businesses, as you indicated, from start-up to up to $25 million in revenue. In the past, we have worked often with not-for-profits to get them understanding just what it is they want to do, where they want to get to, how they are going to get there, and hold their feet to the fire, not in Tony Robbins' way, but holding their feet to the fire to ensure they in fact act and implement their game plan that will get them to that new platform of success. In our September 2017 podcast, her first session with Tripp, Lori Fry, a business management consultant from Columbus, Ohio, shares her inspiration for launching her "Dignity (at work) Project." Through a partnership with The Deming Institute, every month, beginning in June, Lori will share posts from her website, www.dignityatworkproject.com. From her website, Lori is "on a mission to bring dignity back to work in the American workforce. To transform our economy, we first must transform ourselves and our companies. Our aim is to bring dignity and joy back to work. The work of Dr. Deming and others who have contributed to expanding his body of work over the years provide the basis for what's to come." Lori adds "Our dysfunction with skilled labor is the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface are the symptoms of a workforce that's been robbed of dignity in the name of greater productivity and short-term profits. More than 30 years ago, W. Edwards Deming foresaw our current condition, and in 1982 he published Out of the Crisis, a theory of management declaring American companies require nothing less than a transformation of management. American management failed to listen. The economy was expanding; business was booming – until it wasn't – and we know what has happened since." As a 20+ year student of Dr. Deming's theory of management, Lori brings a passionate voice for the possibilities of teamwork and collaboration available to all organizations. Interview highlights include: her experience in "human capital management" her corporate training background and the lingering questions, notably "What if we train our people and they leave the company?" and "What if we don't (train them) and they stay?" taking a break from business management consulting to support her family's farming business her introduction to Deming management as she learned more and more about Deming management, what stood out to her where change begins feedback on her first post, Don't Gamble with Your Company's Future reflections on her post about her son's education system, Tree climbing or life-long learning – what's the real AIM of our education system? her blog audience general blog feedback
