Clint Berry (Superior Livestock) joins us for our annual Cattle Market Outlook following the latest projections presented at Cattle Industry Convention by CattleFax. As we head into 2026, we evaluate where we are in the cattle cycle — have we truly stopped liquidation, or simply slowed it? We discuss heifer retention trends and projected prices across the board, including fed steers, 550-weight calves, cull cows, bred females, and the strengthening bull market. We also examine the impact of the Mexico border closure on supply and industry infrastructure, along with the strong consumer demand that continues to support beef prices despite historically tight cattle numbers. If you're a cow-calf producer, stocker operator, cattle feeder, or anyone involved in the beef industry, this episode provides perspective to help you think through risk, opportunity, and profitability heading into 2026. #WorkingRanchRadio #WorkingRanchMagazine #CattleMarket #CattleOutlook #CattlePrices #CattleCycle #FedCattle #FeederCattle #CullCows #BredCows #BullMarket #BeefDemand #CowCalf #RanchEconomics #AgPodcast

The U.S. cattle herd numbers are still at record-lows. Kevin Good, vice president of industry relations for CattleFax, says the U.S. herd is still at levels not seen for decades. As far as feeder cattle and calves go, America is down a million head, and that's not including the reduction in cows.
Simple Supply and Demand indicated the Ranchers are going to have leverage for the next few years. Clint Berry, Marketing Rep for Superior Livestock joins us as we work through the CattleFax projections for 2024. The US Beef Cattle herd is the smallest since 1961 and expansion of the US herd appears to be rather slow. What could be causing that? Let's hear from CattleFax's Patrick Linnell, here's a snippet from a California Cattlemen's Podcast episode.
Wisconsin's dairy industry isn't the only one suffering with lower prices. Cow numbers are decreasing and the amount of milk per cow is remaining stable. Despite stable milk production per cow, innovative feeding and breeding strategies led to an 11% increase in butterfat per cow. Managing through all these trends will take sharp managers. Charitee Seebecker talks with UW-Extension Dairy Economist, Chuck Nicholson, about what he sees lining up for 2024. The phrase "Midwest Dairy Challenge" may lead you to believe the contestants are from a dairy background. Today, that's not the case. Wisconsin will host over 100 college and tech school students beginning tomorrow in the Green Bay area. Pam Jahnke talks to Ted Halbach, dairy instructor at UW-Madison and organizer behind the Midwest Dairy Challenge event. He says a majority of the competitors don't come from dairy, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be welcome additions to dairy operations and dairy agribusiness. Concerns were voiced last week during Cattle Con in Orlando about how consumers will react to continued tight supplies of beef cattle in 2024. Kevin Good, vice president of market analysis at CattleFax, says this beef herd isn't going to grow quickly, but consumer prices at the store need to flatten and hold. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing makes his regular appearance on the show. Today he talks with Pam Jahnke about last week's cattle inventory number and anticipated consumer reaction down the road. He also looks ahead to Thursday's USDA projections on what's coming out of South America.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Forty years ago the beef market was “a train wreck,” says Randy Blach, CEO of CattleFax. Beef demand dropped by $250 a head, and hundreds of thousands of cattle producers exited the business. So, how did we get to 2022? Last year, the United States had the highest total beef production in the history of the industry and yet the widest spreads (Choice-Select, Prime-Choice and Certified Angus Beef-Choice). Beef demand is alive and well. Yet, as cow herd numbers decline, these next few years will be “separating years” for seedstock breeders. Time to up your game.
